Unity Newsletter December 13 1 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration January 18th-January 31st Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year. It is one of three United States federal holidays to commemorate an individual person. Dr. King is remembered as an important historical figure in the civil rights movement which protested racial discrimination. The King Holiday was signed into law in 1983 and for the first time in 2000 was officially observed in all 50 states. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration (MLK Celebration) is coordinated by United Black Students (UBS) and is chaired by the 1st Vice President of UBS. The committee is representative of the campus community and all are welcome to participate in any of the events commemorate the life of Dr King. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs provides short term book loans to African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American undergraduate students to assist with purchasing books at the beginning of each semester. The book loan program is funded by private donors who are interested in supporting the academic goals of students of color at the University of Miami. Seniors cannot apply for a Book Loan. In order to receive a book loan, you must meet the following criteria. Lewis Book Loan criteria: 1. Cumulative G.P .A. of 2.0 or better. 2. Must be a freshman or first semester transfer student. 3. Read, complete form and sign agreement. 4. Objective evidence of financial need as indicated by a copy of the students FAFSA. 5. Ability to repay the loan within sixty (60) days. 6. Black Awareness MonthThis February, United Black Students, partnered with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, presents Footsteps: Walk This Way To Learn About Diversity During Black Awareness Month 2011 is bringing back the annual events that University of Miami students know and love, along with new events and forum topics that are sure to leave students wide awake. Black Awareness Month, commonly referred to as BAM by students, is the University’s version of Black History Month, which was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926. The creator, Carter G. Woodson, chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, two crucial contributors in the progression of Black people in America. Hispanic Heritage Month 2011December 15, 2010

Are you passionate about commemorating Hispanic culture? Do you want to be part of bringing new and exciting events that celebrate Latino traditions, heritage, and customs? 2011 UGlobe Study Abroad Programs

Go to www.uglobe.org to apply todayOur Summer 2011 undergraduate and graduate programs includes two week courses in: Argentina, France, Ghana, Peru and Russia. These 500 level courses are open to upper division undergraduate and graduate students. The courses are led by UM faculty members and are designed to include presentations by local academics, dip-lomats and experts. Native American Programming Board (NAPB)

Native American celebration is held during the month of November and with your help the month will be filled with entertaining and engaging programs. Humanity in Action: Fellowship ProgramDeadline: January 10, 2011

Content: Humanity in Action (HIA) Fellowship Program brings together university students from the United States and Europe for a rigorous, interdisciplinary inquiry into human rights, diversity, and minority issues for five weeks from a comparative, international perspective. Fellows are selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitments to minority rights, evidence of leadership potential, and outstanding academic achievement. HIA pays housing during its programs, along with a modest food stipend.Eligibility Requirements:-Enrolled sophomore, junior, or recent graduate at the time of application.-All majors and academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.-The GPA is just one criterion HIA evaluates during the selection process. Boren Scholarship Deadline: December 20, 2010

Opportunities for U.S. Undergraduate Students to study in world regions critical to U.S. Interests. Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.The on-campus deadline for Boren Scholarships is December 20, 2010 for study abroad taking place in the 2011-2012 academic year. Paid Intern Exchange in Berlin for Journalism & Communication StudentsApplication Deadline: January 31, 2010

Freie Universität Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are pleased to announce the fourth year of an intensive scholarship-supported summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for American journalism and communications students. The program is targeted primarily at currently enrolled undergraduate students, but a limited number of graduating Seniors, recent graduates and Master’s students may be accepted as well. For the first six weeks of the program, participants will take part in a seminar series to expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country’s current social conditions and media scene. During the second week, students will go on excursions within Ger-many together with journalism students from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union. The final five weeks consist of an intensive internship with a German newspaper, magazine, radio station or PR firm in or near Berlin. Applicants must have at least “advanced intermediate” German skills to take part in the program, as the seminars and internships take place in the German language. The 15 applicants who are finally selected for the program will be awarded a monthly stipend of 650 Euros for the duration of their stay in Germany. DAAD will also provide health and accident insurance. Intercontinental travel is at the participants’ expense. The application deadline is January 31, 2011. HSF/ Freddie Mac Scholarship ProgramThe HSF/ Freddie Mac Scholarship Program is available to students who are from or attending school in New York, New Jersey, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, or Kentucky who are majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information Technology (IT/MIS). Students must be a junior or senior during the 2011-2012 academic year, and should be interested in a career in the mortgage finance industry. In addition to the scholarship, interested students may also apply to be considered for a paid internship in the mortgage finance industry.
