A Look Inside the CIA and FBI October 23rd at 6:30

On October 23rd, Toppel Career Center will be hosting “A Look inside the CIA and FBI” in the Toppel Library at 6:30PM. Attend this program and get an insider’s perspective into what a career with the CIA and FBI is like. Recruiters from both agencies will be in attendance for students to network! BLS for Health Care Providers October 23rd at 12:00PM

The Basic Life Support for healthcare providers covers core material such as adult and infant CPR, foreign-body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). This course is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a card documenting successful completion of a CPR course. The class is Tuesday, October 23rd, from 2:00PM to 6:00PM. The cost is $60 for student members, $70 for non-student members and $80 for non-members. To register, call 305-284-5433 or go to the Wellness Enrichment Suite located on the 2nd floor of the Herbert Wellness Center.

Cast-Iron Favorites Cooking Class

October 18th at 6:30PM

Join Chef Mercedes as she teaches some cast-iron favorites including Apple Dutch Baby with caramel topping. The cost of the class, which includes cooking instruction, food tasting, and recipes, is $20 for UM students and Wellness Center members; $25 for non-members. The class is Thursday, October 18th, from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. To register, please call 305-284-5433 or visit the Wellness Enrichment Suite located on the 2nd floor of the Herbert Wellness Center. Community Classes at the Herbert Wellness Center

Registration is now open for the second session of the fall semester community classes offered at the Herbert Wellness Center. Classes include a variety of activities such as swim lessons for children and adults, salsa, belly dance, boot camp, and more. Take advantage of the “try before you buy” policy by attending the first scheduled class for FREE! Classes are open to everyone. Heart Saver CPR with AEDOctober 19th at 1:00PM

Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Friday, October 19th, from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. The cost is $35 for student members, $40 for non-student members and $45 for non-members. Namaste students! Are classes, social life, and work stressing you out? Take a break and meditate! You will develop mental clarity and discipline that will help you focus and improve concentration (great skills when it comes to studying!) Lunthita Duthely, a follower of the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, will guide and instruct participants through the meditation. The White House Internship ProgramDeadline: November 14th

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. Presidential Management FellowshipDeadline: November 19th

The Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) will be accepting applications from masters level students who will complete their requirements for graduation by August 31st and from individuals who received an advance degree from a qualifying college or university no more than 2 years prior to the opening date of the announcement on November 5th. Interested candidates should search PMF on www.usajobs.gov. More information on the PMFprogram and the requirements are at www.pmf.gov/becomeapmf. PMF applications will be accepted through November 19th.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Deadline: November 13th - 19th

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSFGRFP) has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. If you are planning to attend graduate school in fall 2013, are a first year graduate student, or are in the first semester of your second year in graduate school, then you are within the eligible amount of completed graduate study. As long as you are pursuing a research-focused master’s degree or Ph.D. in an NSF-supported field and meet the citizenship requirements, you are eligible to apply for the GRFP.

Humanity in Action: Fellowship Program Deadline: January 10th

The HIA Fellowship brings together international groups of fellows to study minority rights and produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs will take place for five weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon, and Warsaw. All fellows will be responsible for financing the cost of airfare to participate in the program. HIA will cover this cost for fellows with documented need. Although HIA provides astipend for meals, Fellows should plan to bring spending money of approximately $500

National Institute of Health/ Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program

Deadline: January 2nd

The National Institutes of Health Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program is an individualized doctoral training program for outstanding science students committed to biomedical research careers. Students undertake a collaborative Ph.D. project in any area of biomedical investigation with two-research mentors-one at the NIH intramural campus in Bethesda, MD and one at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities in the UK. Students earn a D.Phil or Ph.D. from Oxford or Cambridge with an average time to completion of four years, just over half the time it takes to complete a biomedical Ph.D. in the US.Eligibility Requirements:•U.S. citizen or permanent resident•College senior and will graduate prior to fall 2013•Outstanding academic performance and promise for a career in biomedical research. Previous laboratory experience is a highly regarded qualification.

DAAD Study ScholarshipDeadline: November 15th

Study Scholarships provide qualified individuals with an opportunity to conduct independent study or complete a full Master’s degree in Germany. German universities offer attractive graduate programs – in both English and German – in a wide variety of fields.

Sarah is the Assistant Director of the Butler Center for Service and Leadership and is originally from Dublin, Ohio. As the Assistant Director, Sarch advises half of the 40 student organizations and programming boards housed in the Butler Center. She also oversees several programs such as Orientation Outreach, Gandhi Day of Service, Hurricanes Help the Hometown, Women’s Leadership Symposium, Leadership Summit, and the Celebration of Involvement. Sarah also advises Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and is the Division of Student Affairs United Way Ambassador. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious

Studies at The Ohio State University and a Masters of Arts in College Student Personnel at Bowling Green State University. In her free time, Sarah loves baking, riding her bike, being a vegetarian and volunteering for the Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB). When asked what is one piece of advice to students Sarah, stated “Learn a new culture! Volunteer! Engage with your community! Be the person you know you can be! And most importantly... relax. Take deep breaths and be thankful for what you have and what you are capable of doing.” Sarah’s favorite quote is “Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of earth are never alone or weary of life” by Rachel Carson.
