The History of Sankofa

were able to see discrimination firsthand. The tensions surrounding the provision of food and drinks continued to build. However, I was not shocked at how quickly emotions grew more intense! As the video of Jane Elliot’s discrimination experiment played, the attendees seemed just as shocked at how the children had internalized discriminatory codes against those outside of their race. This made the discussion with regard to the self-imposed discrimination of colorism resonate even further. We were truly able to gain a new perspective, focusing more so on the ways in which we have disadvantaged our own growth and success with the colorism phenomenons and the many solutions we can use to counter them.” - Suzette Ihejiani

“I felt the premise behind the Common Denominator event was nothing short of groundbreaking. The event began as “The Paper Bag Test” and theoretical techniques similar to the One-Drop Rule were used to separate attendees based on skin tone. As the Colorism phenomenon has become increasingly apparent in recent years, committee members for the event - representing United Black Students, Organization for Jamaican Unity, African Students Union, and Caribbean Student Association, felt the issue most certainly permeated all facets of the Black Experience. It was amazing to see the reactions of those that attended. Being forcibly separated from their peers, students

The MSA Spotlight: BAM Common Denominator Forum! Common Denominator took place on February 20th at 7:00PM in UC Ballroom A. This event was based on the reseach of Jane Elliot, American teacher, lecturer, diversity trainer, and recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education. Elliot created the famous “blue-eyed/brown-eyed” exercise, first done with grade school children in the 1960s, and which later became the basis for her career in diversity training. Are you interested in writing or publishing information? If so, write for the Unity Newsletter. If you are interested, contact Jesse Ford at [email protected].

"I thought the event was great because it went in depth to show how discrimination and colorsim starts in someone's mindset and from there already has someone's potential and abilities beat" - Janae' Newman

"The Common Denominator made it evident that the problem of colorsim is damaging to both ends of the spectrum. I think it definitely put us all in the right mindset to unify and put color barriers and divisions behind us." - T'Jhana Lynn

“I thought the Common Dominator Forum was very interesting and the presentation allowed many of us to feel discrimination firsthand and gain insight into what we collectively have faced. I wish everyone could have the opportunity to experience something like this.”- Marthy Brave

“The United Black Students’ Common Denominator Forum was an engaging discussion on colorism within the African Diaspora. It furthered my awareness of the socially constructed nature of color castes, revealing to me that the issue extends beyond the Black community. It was rewarding to hear various students and faculty share their thoughts on an issue that is not directly addressed in our daily lives.” - Jarren Gary

BAM Day of Service really epitomized the goal of Black Awareness Month and the theme of UBS for the year. As a community this year, we focused on moving up and transcending our current role at the University. On our pursuit for betterment we thought it was essential to look to the next generation and pass on some of what we’ve learned. BAM Day of Service is always my favorite service day of the year because we get the opportunity to directly impact lives and that’s a feeling that cannot be explained.- Mischael Cetoute
