3-on-3 Basketball Leagues (Deadline to Register : 10/18)

Joining the 3-on-3 intramural basketball league is a slam dunk! The deadline to register is 10/18 and team captains must complete a Blackboard training session by 8 a.m. on 10/20. Heart Saver CPR with AED (Class is 10/18)

Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Partici-pants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Tuesday, October 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for student members, $35 for non-student members and $40 for non-members. Basic Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) with final simulationRape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) is a 12-hour, in-depth, internationally recognized program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The comprehensive course begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance before progressing into detailed hands-on defense training which includes a final simulation exercise. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program, but rather a physical defense program designed spe-cifically for women to utilize in the most common types of physical attack situations.

Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)OVERVIEW:The Greater Miami Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is Miami-Dade County’s largest orga-nization serving human resource professionals. Established in 1952, GMSHRM is comprised of the area’s most distinguished human resource professionals. GMSHRM is dedicated to supporting its members and promoting human resource communications by:

• Providing high quality, dynamic and responsive programs and services• Serving as the area’s voice on human resource management issues• Facilitating the development and guiding the direction of the profession

Committed to “Serving the Professional and Advancing the Profession” within the community, GMSHRM proudly sponsors the annual Greater Miami SHRM Student Scholarship Award. The scholarship is to encourage undergraduate and graduate students preparing for work in the field of Human Resource Management. There are two awards available. The winners will receive a $1,000.00 (made payable to the student). Judging is based on timely submission of all required documents and the written essay. The panel of judges is comprised of three GMSHRM members who will rank each essay and application materials. The judges’ scores are combined to determine the two highest average ranking application forms. The panel of judges reserves the right to reject any application that does not meet the requirements. All submissions must be made via email by October 31, 2011 at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). The winners will be notified by email and will be presented with the award at GMSHRM’s December meeting.

QUALIFICATIONS:• An undergraduate student who has completed at least two years of study and is carrying a minimum of 9 semester credit hours and has a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; or a graduate student who is carrying a minimum of 6 semester credit hours and a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Must Major in Human Resources Management or related field. Advocates for Youth - General InternshipAdvocates for Youth is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to the advancement of adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Advocates for Youth’s program and policy departments promote the health of adolescents worldwide with a focus on the prevention of unintended teenage pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS, through access to health services and information. Interns receive $500 a month and work a minimum of 35 hours per week for three months. Unpaid internship positions are also available to students who receive academic credit for their work. Part-time internships can be accommodated; the monthly stipend will be adjusted accordingly. These are ongoing positions and applications are accepted year-round. The Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health PolicySupported by The Commonwealth Fund, administered by the Minority Faculty Development Program at Har-vard Medical School, this unique fellowship is designed to prepare physicians for leadership roles in formulating and promoting health policies and practices that improve the access to high-quality care at the national, state, and /or local levels for minority, disadvantaged, and most vulnerable populations. Up to five one-year, degree-granting fellowships will be awarded per year. Fellows will: 1) complete academic work leading to a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at the Harvard School of Public Health; and 2) be provided with core fellow-ship components such as seminars on leadership and health policy, practicum, leadership forums, conferences, site visits, mentoring, journal club, and shadowing. CFHUF also offers a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree at the Harvard Kennedy School to physicians already possessing an MPH. It is expected that CFHUF will support the development of a cadré of leaders in health policy and practice, well-trained academically and professionally in public health, health policy, health management, and clinical medicine, as well as actively commit-ted to careers in public service.

Physicians who are U.S. citizens and who have completed residency, either Board Eligible or Board Certified in the U.S are eligible for the fellowship. We are seeking physicians with evidence of leadership and leadership potential; experience or interest in addressing and improving the health needs of minority, disadvantaged and vulnerable populations; and intention to pursue a career in policy, public health practice, or academia.

Barry M. Goldwater ScholarshipCampus Deadline: November 11, 2011

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for outstanding students with excellent academic records and demon-strated interest in, and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class, and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national, who will pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. “Sophomore” is defined as a student who plans two more years of full-time undergraduate study and “Junior” is defined as a student who plans one more year of full-time undergraduate study. The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. For additional information on the scholarship see the Barry M.
