The UNITY Newsletter serves as the office's electronic newsletter that is circulated to over 5,000 students, faculty and staff each month. The newsletter is designed to inform the University community about programs and activities for African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American students. In addition, the newsletter includes information on scholarships, internships and other resources that are beneficial to the University's diverse student community.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a Rhodes Scholar? A Fulbright Scholar? The Office of Presti-gious Awards and Fellowships will be hosting two Spring Information Sessions that will provide an overview of nationally competitive scholarships, the application process and the qualities that selection committees look for when evaluating candidates. Many foundations offer prestigious monetary awards for undergraduate as well as graduate study. By the end of the session, students will have a better understanding of the types of awards avail-able and what they can do to increase their chances of success. The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship program in international educational exchange, was pro-posed by Senator J. William Fulbright to the U.S. Congress in the aftermath of World War II as a much-needed vehicle for promoting “mutual understanding between people of the Unites States and the people of other countries of the world.” Signed into law by President Truman in 1946, the Fulbright Program awards approxi-mately 6,000 new grants annually to support an individually designed study/research plan, artistic project or teaching assistantship that will take place during once academic year in a country outside the U.S. This info session will cover program basics, the ins and outs of the application process, and will help students begin to organize their proposals. Heart Saver CPR with AEDDeadline April 4

Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Tuesday, April 5, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for student members, $30 for non-student members and $40 for non-mem-bers. Yoga Pass (2st Prorate) April 4

Semester yoga passes are now pro-rated for the spring semester. The cost to attend any and all classes on the yoga schedule is just $30 for student members and $48 for non-student members. If you haven’t seen the new Cycling Studio at the Herbert Wellness Center, then you don’t know what you’re missing! Experience state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment while enjoying the ride of your life! To celebrate the opening of the new Cycling Studio, spring semester passes are discounted and now pro-rated. One-Pot WondersDeadline April 11

In today’s economy it’s more important than ever to stretch our food dollars and enliven our cooking with deep, rich flavors. Chef Mercedes will show you how to prepare and resourcefully cook one-pot meals. Gumbo, Tuscan Turkey & Bean Potage, Pasta Fagioli, and Chicken Pot Pie are sure to please even the most discriminating eaters. The class is Tuesday, April 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $20 for students and members; $25 for non-members and includes cooking demonstration, recipes, and food tasting. NSHMBA’s 2011 Scholarship Program The National Society of Hispanic MBAs, which exists “to foster Hispanic leadership through graduate manage-ment education and professional development,” has established a scholarship program to assist qualified Hispan-ics to pursue MBAs. Scholarships are offered each year for full- and part-time study at an accredited (AACSB) institution of the student’s choice.Applicants to the NSHMBA Scholarship Program must:• be a United States Citizen or legal permanent resident• be of Hispanic heritage• have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) OR have a minimum 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) in combination with two years of full-time work experience.• have a NSHMBA membership - Member ID required. (Applicants who are not currently NSHMBA members may join now. Click on this NSHMBA Membership link.)• be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Master’s Degree program in Management/Business no later than fall 2011 at a college in the United States or Puerto Rico accredited by AACSB. Click here to view the com-plete list of AACSB Accredited Schools. Awards will range from $2,500 - $10,000. The top five (5) full-time applicants who demonstrate financial need will receive an award for $10,000. The awards include up to a $250 travel and accommodations reimburse-ments for attending the NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo during the award year. Awards are renewable for up to one year or until a Master’s Degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon the recipient meeting the following requirements:• Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent) in current degree program.• Maintain active NSHMBA membership status and are expected to be NSHMBA ambassadors. Recipi-ents must show involvement with the organization through the NSHMBA local Chapter by utilizing the follow-ing opportunities: • Drive the mission of NSHMBA and develop the pipeline on their campus• Serve as an officer or committee in their local NSHMBA chapter• Drive NSHMBA sponsorship and membership efforts• Drive participation to NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo• Attendance to NSHMBA Annual Conference & Career Expo• Other Hispanic orientated community/business school events may be substituted if a NSHMBA chapter is not located within 50 miles

Fulbright Grants for Summer 2011 Programs in the UK Deadline: Friday 15 April 2011 by 5pm (UK Time).Spend Summer 2011 in the UK!The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers three Special Summer Programmes for US citizens to come to the UK. These summer programmes provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), who have com-pleted no more than two years of university study, to come to the UK on a four, five or six week academic and cultural summer programme. Participants in these programmes will get the opportunity to experience an excit-ing academic programme at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

There are three Summer Programmes available for US students in 2011;• Fulbright Commission Newcastle University Summer Institute • Fulbright Commission Roehampton University London Summer Institute • Fulbright Commission Wales Summer Institute

Note: The program is open to students in all courses of study.The majority of the participant costs will be covered.
