Senior MwamboThe Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony that marks the transition of black graduates from their lives at the University of Miami to advanced education and professional careers. This ceremony was established in 1992 through the vision and love of a very dynamic and caring international student from Malawi, East Africa; Mr. Patrick A. Masala.

The term “Mwambo” literally means ceremonial rite of passage. It is Chichewa and comes to us from Malawi, East Africa where it was founded. The Senior Mwambo is an African rite of passage ceremony designed to recognize the accomplishments of our black graduates and their families. It is a celebration of the transition from one stage of life to the next.

This year’s ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00pm in Gusman Hall. For additional information regarding the Senior Mwambo, please contact the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at 305-284-2855.

Studio Cycling and Yoga passes are on sale now at the Herbert Wellness Center. The new cycling studio with a video wall has taken the indoor cycling experience to a whole new level. For variety, the yoga schedule includes different styles of yoga—Sivananda, Vinyasa Flow, Power, and Hatha. A semester pass gives the member unlimited access to all the classes on the schedule. The cost of each pass is $60 per semester for student members and $96 for non-student members. Can’t decide? Buy a combo pass for only $90 for student members and $144 for non-student members. Working out has its rewards! We all know that being physically active is good for your physi-cal and mental well-being. Now it can also be good for your wallet! The Herbert Wellness Center is partnering with FitCampus.com to bring a new fitness program to the U. FitCam-pus.com is a program that rewards students for exercising at the Wellness Center. By simply recording your workouts, you can win prizes such as gift cards, iPads, and cruises. Students must workout 2.5 hours per week during the four-week program to be eligible to win the grand prize. Each week smaller prizes are given away to reward students for achiev-ing their goals. The program starts February 6 and ends March 4.It’s easy to participate. Just register with FitCampus.com before February 6. Each time you exercise at the Wellness Center, record your workout online. As long you accrue 2.5 hours of exercise a week, your name is entered into a drawing for weekly prizes. Tunnel is April 16-18th Tunnel of Oppression is a sensory based experience that exposes students to various issues of oppression in society today. The UC Ballrooms are divided into different rooms each dealing with a specific issue. In past years, issues such as Religion, Sexual As-sault, Disabilities Issues, Education, and LGBTQ among others have been covered. Last year 552 students went through Tunnel of Oppression, and over 50 volun-teers and10 student organizations helped make the event a success. This year we want Tunnel to be better than ever!! IU Simon Cancer Center’s summer program available to underrepresented populations

Deadline is Februray 17; program is May 31-July 27, 2012 INDIANAPOLIS -- (December 7, 2011) -- High school and college students from underrepresented populations interested in cancer research careers can gain hands-on experiences during next summer’s Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center Summer Research Program. The cancer center’s annual Summer Research Program, held in partnership with the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Center for Research and Learning, places students with a mentor physician or researcher for nine weeks (May 31-July 27) on the IUPUI campus. Students work with faculty who are conducting studies in the most progressive areas of cancer research. The program’s primary goal is to increase the number of underrepresented popula-tions engaged in basic, clinical, and prevention and control cancer research by providing positive and meaningful firsthand exposure to those fields.Each student receives a stipend (payment) of $3,200. Students are responsible for their own housing arrangements.

The Summer Research Program provides students an opportunity to: • interact with any one of five cancer center research programs, 10 shared facilities and more than 100 world-renowned investigators • gain exposure to a wide-range of basic science, translational, and clinical research activi-ties • continually interact with and learn from other students, clinical and post-doctoral fel-lows, and faculty • attend weekly workshops that deal with issues related to gaining admission to graduate and professional programs of study

Students are selected on interest in biomedical or behavioral science, grades, and personal interviews. High school students who participate must have completed at least their junior year and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Undergraduates in the program must have completed 24 hours of college credit, be majoring in a biomedical or behavioral science, and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.2. With the support of the Kenneth Lattman Foundation, the Bill Cosford Cinema is pleased to invite filmmakers Pamela Yates and Paco de Onis to discuss their latest film, GRANITO: HOW TO NAIL A DICTATOR. On Thursday, February 2 at 7PM, as part of the Kenneth Lattman Foundation Lecture Series, GRANITO will be screened for its Miami Premiere followed by a Q+A with the filmmakers. GRANITO is a story of destinies joined by Guatemala’s past, and how a documentary film intertwined with a nation’s turbu-lent history emerges as an active player in the present. In GRANITO our characters sift for clues buried in archives of mind and place and historical memory, seeking to uncover a narrative that could unlock the past and settle matters of life and death in the present. Each of the five main characters whose destinies collide in GRANITO are connected by the Guatemala of 1982, then engulfed in a war where a genocidal “scorched earth” campaign by the military exterminated nearly 200,000 Maya people. Now, as if a watchful Maya god were weaving back together threads of a story unraveled by the passage of time, forgotten by most, our characters become integral to the overarching narrative of wrongs done and justice sought that have pieced together, each adding their granito – their tiny grain of sand, to the epic tale. The Kenneth Lattman Foundation Lecture Series at the Bill Cosford Cinema features eight films build on innovative storytell-ing and created by some of the brightest filmmakers today. The series brings audiences “back to the movie theater” to watch and discuss exceptional films together. Each screening is followed by a discussion with University of Miami experts, distin-guished industry VIPs, the audience and other guests who explore the scholarly, professional, and artistic merits of each film. This special event came to fruition through the generous support of Eliot and Shelley Abramson of the the Lattman Founda-tion, UM’s Center for Latin American Studies, the Women and Gender Studies program, and the University of Miami School of Communication.
