A bizarre succession of armed robberieshit the Maitland police precinct lastweekwhen thousands of rands of ciga-

rettes were stolen in three separate inci-dents.This spate of robberies has resulted in the

local police spokesperson, W/O SiyabulelaVukubi, sending out a stern warning to thedrivers of delivery vehicles for them to beattentive at all times.“They must exercise extra caution when

doing deliveries as this has raised a hugeconcern,” explains Vukubi.In the first incident last week Tuesday the

complainant was delivering cigarettes at abusiness in Paarden Eiland.He was apparently approached by two un-

knownmales. One of thempointed a firearmat the complainant,whowas then forced intothe back of the delivery vehicle. The robbersdrove off for a short while before linking upwith two other suspects.All four unloaded a huge number of ciga-

rettes from the truck into a white Nissanbakkie before racing away.

Two days later the second complainantand his partner were delivering cigarettesat a business in Maitland when they wereapproached by four suspects.

FirearmIn virtually identical circumstances a sus-

pect threatened the complainant with a fire-arm before he was ordered to hand over thekeys and forced into the back of the deliveryvehicle. The suspects drove a short distanceand offloaded boxes of cigarettes into anoth-er vehicle – a silver Toyota sedan.The very next day (last Friday), the third

complainant was delivering cigarettes at ashop in Maitland when he was approachedby two suspects. Vukubi says it is too earlyto say whether the same suspects executedthese robberies or whether they just followthe same modus operandi.“In the third incident the complainantwas

also threatened with a firearm, ordered tohand over the keys and ordered to climb intothe back of the vehicle. This time the sus-pects droppedoff the cigarettes, drove a littlefurther, abandoned the vehicle and collectedthe cigarettes again.

No arrests have been made in any of theincidents, so the police are asking the publicfor any information that could lead to anyarrests.

Vukubi continues: “If the driver of a deliv-ery truck suspects that he or she is being fol-lowed they should not stop but rather driveto the nearest police station.

“When they are threatened they shouldstay calm, must not resist and follow the in-structions. At all times try and rememberthe description and characteristics of the

suspects as this will assist in the investiga-tion.”

Other crimeMeanwhile, Maitland Police are also con-

cerned after a sudden increase in crimes liketheft out of motor vehicles as well as house-breaking in residences and businesses.

Vukubi elaborates: “With the festive sea-son approaching we would like to warn carowners that it is essential not to park theirvehicles in drive ways, but in a secured placelike a garage.

“The tendency is to leave some valuablesexposed inside the car which invites thecriminals to break into the car.

“Try to park in well-lit areas at night andinstall an alarm if possible.”

Residents and business owners are alsocautioned to look after their property.

They are requested by Vukubi to invest inand utilise a good overall security system.

“Adequate lighting around the perimeterof your house acts as a good deterrent.

“Trim shrubs around windows and en-trances of your house so they cannot concealintruders. When you leave at night leave in-terior lights on, as well as the television orradio so that your house looks and soundsoccupied. Also, keep the list of emergencynumbers next to the telephone,” he con-cludes.

According to the local police Table View isa high risk area for “bank followings”.

In these incidents criminals follow some-one who has withdrawn a large amount froma bank and rob them soon afterwards.

On 27 September R5 000 was stolen froma Parklands resident after he went to AbsaBank at Bayside Mall.

The police suspect that it was a bank fol-

lowing, but the victim (who wishes to re-main anonymous) is still mystified.

He elaborates: “I went to the bank to with-draw money for the workers. I never toldthem where I was going. I went in as I alwaysdo and left again with the money in my pock-et. Someone probably saw me withdraw thatamount at the bank and followed me, but Ididn’t see anyone.”

The man arrived at his home.“Suddenly two men approached me and

one pushed a 9mm pistol right against my

head. The other one almost pulled my pantsdown in order to get the money from insidemy pocket. I have no idea how they knew Ihad money in my pocket...”

Spokesperson for Table View Police, LtElizabeth Munro, says this type of crime hasbeen escalating recently.

She explains: “Absa Bank in the DelphiArch Centre opposite Bayside Mall is a highrisk area for bank followings, as numerousrobberies and bank followings have comefrom these premises.”

Asingle mother adopted them all intoher heart. Now she’s planning to havetheir cots “adopted”, so the abandoned

and adoptive babies she loves so much, canhave all they need.

Ashleigh Devine from Table View, visitedthe Rock a Bye Baby Home for infants whohave been dumped, abandoned or given upfor adoption, in April.

While there, she noticed there was onlyone pram for about eight infants. She decid-ed to jump in and help. After a number ofcalls to pram manufacturers, six new pramswere couriered to the home.

“This was when the penny dropped and Irealised that without trying too hard, I couldactually make a difference. So the idea ofAdopt-a-Cot was born.”

Ashleigh explains she first learnt the legalimplications surrounding such a project, asit involves babies. Soon after though, shewas involving her entire circle of friends,family and colleagues to get into adopting-a-cot-mode.

Financial burden“The most important goal I am trying to

achieve is to assist the facility by takingaway the financial burden of purchasing allthe consumables that the babies require,”she says.

“These little angels creep into your heartand stay there forever. The caretakers sacri-fice everything to ensure that these little ba-bies have as much love as they can muster,until they are found a forever home,” shesays.

The basic idea of the initiative, is to getgroups of people, individuals or corporates,to choose a particular cot, baby and all, thento adopt or sponsor that cot for a particulartime, Ashleigh explains.

The duration of the “adoption” is up to thesponsor, as well as the content of the spon-sorship.

The babies vary in age from premature toapproximately eight months old and some oftheir most basic needs are the obvious – for-mula, nappies, and such.

“When a baby is adopted, the cot is almostimmediately filled with a newbie that has ar-rived,” she says.

AbandonedThe babies are abandoned in bins, open

fields or at hospitals, or they are given upfor adoption at birth.

Ashleigh now has a plan to have a special“baby shower” – the Mad Hatter’s High TeaCharity Function which will be held at Spier

Wine Estate on 19 October.On the day they will host 80 ladies, each

of whom will be bringing a gift for the home.“So ultimately we can hand over a nice

supply of various consumables that thehome requires, as well as educate the ladieson the initiative,” Ashleigh says.

Yolande Barnard, manager and housemother at Rock a Bye, says she is very excit-ed about the upcoming High Tea, and Ash-leigh’s help in general.

She says the Adopt-a-Cot initiative hasbeen in existence at the home for a while,but a general lack of hands meant they wereunable to maintain the programme to its fullpotential.

“Ashleigh is absolutely like a little rollingball,” Yolande says.

“Her services are absolutely free and sheis advertising the initiative in various publi-cations.

“She also created a Facebook page andtakes a lot of the pressure off us with her vol-untary work. We all do extra work, so it real-ly helps that she does the marketing aspect,”she says.

Yolande is very excited about the upcom-ing High Tea. “I can hardly wait!” she says.

sized in anOC6 outrigger canoe off the coastof Bloubergstrand on Sunday.Some swim next to the canoe and others

row while sitting shoulder-deep in water.They stare fixedly at the coast, which some-times seems hundreds of kilometres away.If not for the strong wind blowing them

towards the shoreline they might have lostall hope.Meanwhile, oneof the crewmemberswho

was on a surf ski alongside the OC6 hurriedto shore to get some help.

er of the boat, Karen Bramley (35), jokes:“All we need now is a shark!”One of the crew quickly lifts his legs out

of the water.The swells try to intimidate the paddlers,

but the freezingwater occupies theirminds.With thehelp of the ever reliableNational

Sea Rescue Institute of Melkbosstrand, thefavourable wind and their own determina-tion, the six people finally reach the safeshores of Bloubergstrand.TygerBurger talked to Bramley about

their ordeal.“I imported this 45-foot long Polynesian/

Hawaiian six-seater outrigger canoe in 2007with the intention of starting the sport inSouth Africa.“We went out in strong winds and,

flipped about three or four kilometres fromshore.“Unfortunately we didn’t put spray decks

on the canoeandwedidn’t righther correct-ly, so she took in water.“Hours later we floated back to shore,”

she laughs awkwardly.

Deep“That boat saved our lives out there in

that big ocean. This was the first time shehas ever been out so deep! The stabilizerarm as well as the traditional rope riggingof the canoe kept us floated while the canoeitself was completely submerged underwa-ter. Just the nose and the outrigger kept usafloat.”Bramley adds that her boat sustained a

few hairline cracks“It was built for those kind of conditions.

I was very impressed,” she says, before add-ing it was human error that led to their ice-cold adventure in the open ocean.NSRIMelkbosstrand station commander,

Rhine Barnes, continues: “We got two callssimultaneously on Sunday.“One was for a surf skier who was possi-

bly in trouble between Melkbosstrand andBloubergstrand and the other one from alifesaver to assist with six people in the wa-ter near Seli 1.“The surf skier was happily paddling to-

wards Melkbos when we got there.“We sent our rescue boats to the capsized

vessel in Bloubergstrand.“At that stage they were just coming out

of the water and were all very cold.All showed signs of mild hypothermia

and were treated on the scene and whenthey required no further medical attentionthey were released.”Bramley had a special word of thanks for

NSRI and her crew members who wentthrough the ordeal with her:“A big thank you to NSRI who responded

so quickly and came to our aid and also toBrendon Scharfetter and his crew (all standup paddle boarders) for putting themselvesforward to demo this one of a kind craft.“We hope to be back out on the water

again on the next less windy day!”

Rescued from the icy seaThis sixseater outrigger canoe capsized off Bloubergstrand on Sunday. Despite the crew members being treated for mild hypothermia, theyescaped unharmed after drifting towards the shore in icy cold water.

The City of Cape Town has commit-ted to giving Lifesaving WesternProvince (LWP) a grant of R3millionfor the 2013/2014 financial year.

This commitment ensures thatthere will be lifeguards present onmany beaches on weekends and pub-lic holidays from October to March.During the summer and Easterschool holidays there will be life-guards on beaches every day.

Says the city’s mayoral committeemember for community services andspecial projects, Belinda Walker:“LWPhasa longhistory of upholdingthe spirit of lifesaving and I am surethey will continue to ensure that ourbeaches are safe.”

The city’s Sport, Recreation andAmenities Department initiated anagreement with LWP in 2007 andgave a grant of R3 million per yearto expand the good work that this or-ganisation does.

Continues Walker: “We have as-sisted this organisation with equip-ment and uniforms, as well as build-ing clubhouses. I hope that we cancontinue to work together in goodfaith as we have done so in the past.”

The city’s partnership with LWPover the past few years has signifi-cantly reduced instances of drown-ing and resulted in better manage-ment during peak season. During the2012/2013 festive season, beach at-tendance reached a peak of morethan a million people with threedrownings reported.

“Cape Town has a very long coast-line, spanning 307 km, and monitor-ing this coastline is always going tobe a challenge, (it) depends on anumber of different partnershipsand efforts,” concludes Walker.

is a silver lining.Table View’s Karl Ebel is now more de-

termined than ever to hit that elusive300 km/h.As reported recently in TygerBurger,

Ebel reached 190 km/h at last year’s Haks-keen Pan Speedweek before his car spun.This year Ebel was optimistic he could fi-

nally break the 300 km/h barrier, but at 186km/h theMonstangs differential “gave up”with a huge bang.He elaborates: “The first thought was

that a tyre had blown and we waited in an-ticipation for her veer out of control. All thetime at the ready to try and save it if wecould. She kept straight but the cockpit hada rather disconcerting black smoke start-ing fill it. We fumbled for the switches,started removing belts, window net,grabbed extinguisher and got her to a stop.“After exiting the smoke dissipated and

all that was visible was the tear that the

propshaft had made in the tunnel. The diffhad given up properly with the resultantmangled propshaft and collateral damagemeant that we would have no further at-tempts.”When all things are considered the sim-

ple fact that Ebel and his team even wentto Hakskeen Pan was unlikely in itself.Just two months before this year’s event

they had to build up a car. They got a 327Chevy “power-plant” and had to get a carbody to fit it in.This turned out to be the shell of a 1980

Mustang Fox body hatch.“Two months seemed like an optimistic

endeavour, butwe thoughtwe’d give it a tryanyway,” he says.Working late into the night and getting

up before sunrise paid off and they wereready to go.All the planning ultimately failed, be-

cause they could not even pass 200 km/h.However, they competed and will return

with new ideas for next year’s event.If they can overcome the bumpy desert

floor, get enough grip andmerge dynamismwith aerodynamics then that 300 km/h bar-rier is in their sights.

The e-Waste Association of South Africa(eWASA) hopes to set a new record with thisround of collections.

The eWASA member companies includecollectors, refurbishers, dismantlers and re-cyclers. Each company plays an importantrole in the end-of-life management of dis-

carded electronic equipment.Not only do thesemachines contain valua-

ble materials such as copper, gold and palla-dium, but also materials that could damagethe environment including lead, barium,mercury and other heavy metals.

Pull plug on electronic waste


Almost 18 months after Milnerton HighSchool’s head boy Jake Wootton was killedinHermanus, the school’s newgymhas beennamed after him.

The emotional scars of his untimely deathwill never heal completely, as witnessedwhen Jake’s mother, Sue, walked throughthe gym with tears in her eyes.

The headmaster, Paul Besener, deliveredthe keynote address during the official open-ing ceremony of “Jake’s Gym” last weekWednesday.

“The gym is going to have a huge effect,in the long-term, on all the sport and activi-ties, all the fun and the weight-loss, all thehealthy living and wellness programmes inour school,” he summed up.

Most of the funds to buy the equipmentcame from a Golf Day that was held.

“Inside the gym you will find top-classequipment and I’m sure everyone who usesthis will enjoy it,” he continued.

Jake’s Gym is situated on the Ascot fieldsnear the school.

The gym’s name is written on a blue back-ground, because Jake was in Hofmeyer

House (that competes in blue) and he had agreat love for the sea.

The name is written in white.Says Besener: “We chose white because

Jake was probably the most peace-loving,conflict-free type of person that I knew. Theletters are also in bold, because even thoughhe was peace-loving, he always stood upwhen he needed to be counted upon.”

He concluded by thanking everyone whoplayed a part in establishing the gym.

The city iscommitted to providing increased ac-cess to swimming pools aswell aswa-ter education programmes,” Walkersaid.

RulesResidents were urged to followthese rules:

VNo alcohol or banned substancesmay be brought into the facility.

VNoglass containers are allowed inthe facility.

VNo weapons of any kind are al-lowed on the premises.

VNo running or horse-play is al-lowed in and around the pool.

VNo dunking or diving off otherpeople’s shoulders is allowed.

VNo ball games are allowed in oroutside the pool area.

VNo pets may be brought into thefacilities.

VNo tents or similar structuresmay be brought into the facilities.

VNo one may push others into thepool.

Jazz Night brings cheer to creche

Little People’s Den in Milnerton benefited from the Little People’s month long charity drive.

One month of charity reached acrescendo with a Jazz Night re-cently with all the collections andfunds heading to the Little Peo-ple’s Den in Du Noon.

The majority of the children atthis creche are from the sur-rounding areas. It runs five daysa week and they are collected ear-ly morning with the owner’s carand transported back home inthe evenings.

So when they heard that all theproceeds obtained from the covercharge at the Jazz Night in LongStreet, which was organised byCorne Mouton, everyone wasover the moon.

She elaborates: “We alsolaunched a one month toy drivefor them and we are sticking to

the motto ‘every little bit helps’.Instead of asking for money weasked for items that can be foundin and around the household anddon’t necessarily have to be pur-chased. We are still collecting thevarious goods for this charity or-ganisation that is in need ofmore toys, stationery and non-perishable food items as they aregrowing each day.”

V Hoeveel van jouself is in Gerook ge-skink?Vreeslik baie. Gerook is skaamteloos ge-

Local band, Blackstoneradio, have re-cently released a new music video fortheir song “Sweet Mary Jane”.

The music video, which was shot at Mari-na da Gama, Newlands Forest, YsterplaatAir Field and Kenridge, tells the story ofthree guys who fall for the same girl.

“At the end, the three of us run up to herhouse and when we see her, we realise thatshe’s still in school, and then we all runaway,” explains Dylan Haskin, the band’sdrummer.

“It feels like a sort of Something aboutMary kind of vibe,” adds JC Malengret, theband’s vocalist.

“It’s important to not take the video seri-ously,” bassist, Trevor Edwards points out,adding: “It’s just meant for a laugh.”

The video was shot by Troy Davies of Ret-royspective, who also helped the band byshooting the video for free. “Sweet MaryJane” is the second single off the band’s de-but album, Out of Rock, which also showsa different side of the band who usually de-scribe their music as hard rock.

Clean“It’s clean hard rock, with as little effects

as possible on the voices, on the instru-ments,” JC explains, adding: “It’s only afour piece, no rhythm, so it’s just veryclean.”

“We’re busy exploring the acoustic guitaror classic guitar,” says guitarist FrancoisLouw.

“‘Sweet Mary Jane’ was a song we sort oftried off the cuff, but it happened to work,”he says.

“Since then we haven’t realigned the mu-

sic that we are writing, it’s still rock, butwe are exploring different areas of the um-brella rock term,” Francois explains.

“Previously we didn’t think we could pulloff classic acoustic rock tunes, but we think,we hope, that ‘Sweet Mary Jane’, hasproved it differently,” he says, adding: “Weare definitely trying more ballad type mu-sic, but there will still be some nice Tyson-hitting gems in between.”

to thank for starting the band as they foundeach other through online ads.

“Blackstoneradio started in 2008 in a ga-rage in Bellville, like most good South Afri-can bands,” Francois says, quickly adding:“Like most good South African bands, wedidn’t know what the hell we were doing.”

“We’ve since progressed a lot musically,and we’ve got better looking band mem-bers,” he jokes.

More variety and a more unique sound iswhat JC says fans can expect from the bandin the future.

Sports Club in Waterville Road.From the venue, there is an 800m “neu-

tral zone” until cyclists turn right onto theWest Coast road. All three routes then headout in a northerly direction towards Melk-bos, Atlantis, andMamre. This is primarilya flat ride.The 65km route follows the West Coast

Road until the Melkbos traffic light, wherea right turn takes cyclists along Melk-bosstrand Road in the direction of the N7.Cyclists then turn left onto the R304 and

race to Atlantis.The 85 km route follows the West Coast

Road past Atlantis and turns right toMamre (up the only hill on the course).Cyclists then pedal through the outskirts

of Mamre towards Atlantis to meet up withthe 65 km route.Both the 85 km and 65 km routes cycle

through the Atlantis business district. Theroute then takes the West Coast Road backthrough Melkbos along the beachfront toBig Bay. The finish is in Cormorant Ave-nue, with a neutral zone back to the venue.The 19 km route turns left off the West

Coast Road at the Melkbos traffic lightwhere it joins the other two routes. The85 km race starts at 06:30, the 65 km at 07:15and the 19 km at 08:00. Cut-off time is 11:00.
