At a recent Subcouncil 4 meeting city officials and councillors got insight into a report from the Domus Housing Group about the E-Junction development that aims to bring new affordable living to the area. Grant Kolbe and Matthew Quinton of the Domus Housing Group presented the report which detailed how the housing project would provide for approximately 1 000 af- fordable housing units to be built near the Elsies River station. Their report pointed out that the project will be completed in three phases. In Phase One, a total of 120 units will be constructed. Work on this phase was launched in June this year and is expected to be completed by August 2014. In Phase Two, an additional 278 units will be built. Construction on this phase launched in August and will run until No- vember 2014. In Phase Three, another 690 units will be added. Work on this phase will run from April 2014 until October 2015. Rentals This housing project aims to cater for young working-class professionals, single- parent households or starter families with a good credit history. Rents will range from R750 per month for a bachelor’s flat to R2 250 per month for two- bedroom apartments. The aim is to provide affordable accommo- dation that will allow people from decentral- ised communities to move closer to the eco- nomic hub of the city, and to make a contri- bution to the economic growth of the area. The City of Cape Town supports urban re- generation initiatives as a way of uplifting local communities, and is actively involved in supporting a number of long-term projects including the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) and the proposed Halt Road regeneration project. Mobile learning is in action for learners, thanks to the efforts of an Elsies River en-trepreneur.Llewellyn Scholtz has developed an appli-

cation for cellphones and computers to helplearners who are doing CAT (computer ap-plication technology) at school, and it’s al-ready making a big difference for learners. The former teacher, now a web designer,

is still passionate about imparting hisknowledge about the subject and wanted tomake a difference in the lives of learners, not just in his community, but across thecountry.“Since leaving teaching, which I still do

part-time, I devoted my time to research onhow to enhance the subject that I taught forso many years,” he said.“That is when I decided to build an An-

droid app which learners can download ontheir phones. Youngsters love playing withtheir phones, so now they can have funwhile learning with everything they needto know at their fingertips.”Scholtz pointed out thatwith this applica-

tion on their phones they really didnot needa textbook.“Everything that you need to learn is

there,” he says excitedly.“There’s interaction all the time because

it marks multiple choice questions andmatching items electronically. The bestpart is that it’s free.”While Scholtz has developed this applica-

tion for CAT, he already has his eyes set onlooking at how applications can help out inother subjects as well.“Mobile learning represents a way to ad-

dress a number of our educational prob-lems,” he says.“It is themobile aspect of this application

that makes it stand apart from other typesof learning. Children love cellphones, sowhy can’t we use it to enhance their educa-tion?“Devices such as smart phones and tab-

lets enable innovation and help students, teachers, and parents gain access to digitalcontent, and are essential tools to improvelearning for students.”Scholtz added thathehadhoped to release

the application earlier this year but he hadto be patient to allow the education depart-ment to approve it.“Now it canhelp learners across the coun-

try,” he concluded.VThe application can be downloaded at http://cat.appzmobile.co.za, or email llewel[email protected].

derdom reeds baie belangrik.

goeie idee kry hoe goed jou kind voorberei

is vir formele onderrig op skool.Indien daar by jou twyfel bestaan oor eni-

Former learners from Arcadia Senior Sec-ondary have launched an association tomake a difference at the school.OnSaturday theyhosted the launch of the

Alumni Association and one of the mem-bers, Zelda Lategan, feels that it bodes wellfor the future of the school.“We had quite a few ex-students as well

as community members and most impor-tantly some educators of the school whojoined up,” she said.“It also motivated us to see that members

of the community were getting involved be-cause they have come on board to help usmake thepositive changes andbe thewatch-ful eyes in the area.“It shows that the surrounding communi-

ty also feels that enough is enough when itcomes to people wanting to destroy theschool. Now they want to take ownershipand take care of the school as it is important

for their children.”Lategan said this event on Saturday was

just to get a database of people who are in-terested in giving back to the school andcommunity fromwhich they come. “We arestill looking for more ex-Arcadians to joinus on this journey,” she adds.“Our plans for the future include our first

AGM, at which the office bearers for theAlumni Association will be elected. We arealso busy with the drafting of our constitu-tion and registration of the organisation.”She also pointed out that the idea was not

only to beautify the buildings of the school, but also to change the mindset of the learn-ers to realise their potential.“They must realise and learn about the

rich legacy of this school. Theymust be mo-tivated and empowered by this legacy tostart believing in themselves. Here we arethankful for the guidance of DrMuavia Gal-lie in this regard.”V For more information about the association Lategan can be contacted on 071 870 6058.

Over 60scompete tomake teamAbout 600 senior citizens from all aroundthe peninsula came out to attend a funsports day last Friday. The Department of Cultural Affairs andSport in conjunction with the City of CapeTown and the Western Cape Older PersonForum staged the event for people of 60years and older. They competed in a variety of activitiesand proved yet again that the age’s onlylimit was a lack of a positive attitude.“Sporting spirits were high during theMetropoleGoldenGames held on 4Octoberat the Blue Downs Sports Stadium,” saidManfred Josephs, programme director ofthe event.“The senior citizens, or ‘mature citizens’,as they prefer to be called, brought their A-game to the day. Upon arrival, excited par-ticipants sang and danced, with some sing-ing the ever-popular sports chantWho are,who are, who are we to get the competitiongoing,” he said.“Despite very windy conditions, the sen-ior citizens took part in various activitiessuch as jukskei, rugby-ball-throw, and thevery popular passing-the-ball. Some partic-ipants showed off their prowess in the 100and 200 metre sprints, saying that the trickto running in windy conditions was to ‘gowith the wind’.”Josephs said participants were deter-mined to win their events, as they knewthat winners from this event would go onto represent the Western Cape at the Na-tionalGoldenGames inBoksburg later thismonth.“The Games gave the senior citizens achance to showoff their sporting skills, andalso gave them a chance to show that eventhough they are older than some of us, theystill havewhat it takes to be active in sportsand our communities,” he said.Other non-sporting activities includedthe singing of the national anthem at theopening, praying and a scripture reading,as well as a motivational speech.V Any enquiries can be directed to Manfred Josephsat 021 483 9629.

TheApostolic FaithMission (AFM) churchin Wesbank is on a mission. They want togive thanks for the third time in as manyyears, through a very special celebrationservice. This third annual thanksgiving servicewill be celebrated on 20 October from 17:00to 19:00 at the Hoofweg Primary School, inWesbank’s Main Road. They have quite a programme plannedfor the evening.“A slideshow will open the festivities, show the growth of our institution and fea-ture community projects and social uplift-ment ventures,” said Cornelius Pieters, apastor in the church. He says the aim of their church withtheseventures is tonurturehealthyparish-es so they can contribute positively to soci-ety and continue to uplift and invest intheir communities. But they do need some help.“We are in need of partners and collabo-rations to reachabigger part of the commu-nity. In a disadvantaged area such asWesbank our resources are limited, andany donation of cash or kind would be wel-comed by our community,” he said.“The need for a ‘hero’ in our ‘I can’ cam-paign would show that in a diverse societyand community that is being shaken to itscore by violence and crime, that God is stillon the throne,” he said. The church asked that the communityand interested parties at large please re-spond for arrangement purposes by no lat-er than 14 October, “tomake event success-ful and enjoyable,” Cornelius said.V Interested parties can contact AFM pastor Cornelius Pieters at 073 990 0871 or at corneliuspie[email protected].

Nuwe bestuurdersmaak soms foute

Life is by no means easy andyes we are all striving foracceptance in this world. Butmy question to all is: “Whatwould life be like withoutcommunity?”

I personally believe thatcommunity brings forth togeth-erness, through community weall become as one. Each indi-vidual is a link to his or herown community. For myselfand my family we are a part ofthe Kraaifontein community.

No matter what the communi-ty you might be a part of, it’s aknown fact that in your veryown community, I believe thatthere are those in need of ahelping hand – those who aresilenced by their struggles.

Many times we are aware ofthose who are hurting, due tothem maybe living close in ourreach, but yet we bluntly turnour heads in the other direc-tion. All I’m saying is it takesone person to rise up and bethat difference, yes it onlytakes one person with a willingheart to create a communitychain reaction of many helpinghands.

What would community belike, if not for those that have agiving heart? Today I personal-ly want to commend all thoseprecious people out their whoare already part of the differ-ence and to those that are not Ido want to encourage to join in.

Think of those who arehurting due to their struggles, whether it be financially, emotionally or even physicallyand remind yourself that itcould have been me.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Aboot camp in the school holidays has givensome learners from local schools a boost totheir morale. The Western Cape Department of Educa-

tion and the Western Province Regimentwere behind the partnership to host thisboot camp for learners who stay in areaswhich are considered to be crime hotspots.Andre Morgan, one of the facilitators,

pointedout that 90 learners between theagesof 14 to 16 from Beauvallon, Modderdam,SpesBona, BridgetownSilverstream,Heide-veld, and Crystal high schools attendedcamp.“This is the third venture of its kind,” he

says. “This time we have also had help fromtheMetroPolice, parole officers from theDe-

partment of Correctional Services and po-lice from various areas into the fold to helpus.“The objective of the camp was to have

a transversal approach to child developmenttargeting youth at risk.”This boot camp took place at Gordon’s

Camp in Simon’s Town and according toMorgan, was a big success“The youngsters were subjected to mili-

tary discipline and training from the start, and found it a bit strange at first. But, aftergetting used to it, they started to enjoy it.“They discovered that with discipline

they have greater potential, endurance aswell as resolve if they can just tap into it andnot give up on themselves.“Some of the activities also taught them

about their leadership skills and how work-ing as a team can be a benefit.”

Another important activity was discover-ing their dreams and asking them to openup to each other about their fears in theircommunities.“This gave them the chance to take off the

masks of their ego, opening their hearts andminds to share their ideas with others.“They learned that through planning,

hard work and discipline, you can achieveyourgoals anddreams in life,” he concluded.

A bit of discipline goes along way on boot camp

Participants get into the military mood at the start of their boot camp during the schoolholidays.

Hundreds of motorists areswindled out of theirmoney by dishonest pet-

rol-station attendants bymeansof a scam known as pump-hang-ing or pump-jumping.Although the incidence of

this trickery has decreased on anational scale over the years, many an unsuspectingmotoriststill falls victim.Kraaifontein resident Sha-

hied Samsodien of BonnieBrook, recently witnessed andthen botched what he allegeswas such an attempt. After fuelling his vehicle at a

petrol station in Kraaifonteinabout a fortnight ago, Samsodi-en noticed the nozzle of the pet-rol pump hanging outside of thepump, after he was served.“Having been a victim of

pump-jumping myself in thepast, I immediately realisedwhat was happening.

ProofI took a photo and when the

attendant who left the nozzlehanging noticed me he franti-cally ran towards the pump. Af-ter confrontinghim, he swore atme and walked away,” saysSamsodien.Samsodien explains the prac-

tice as follows: “The attendantafter fuelling a car for say R100,would leave the nozzle of thepump hanging slightly out.“This prevents the pump

from resetting and when thenext motorist pulls up and re-quests a bigger amount such asR200, the attendant would usethe same pump, fuel the carwith the requested amount(adding on the the previousamount) and pocket the R100difference,” he says. When he reported the inci-

dent to the manager he was toldin no uncertain terms that thisparticular practice does not oc-cur at their station.“The manager was adamant

but changed her attitude whenI showed her the picture I took. She was visibly shocked,” hetold TygerBurger.TygerBurger questioned oth-

er petrol attendants at stationsin the area, and was told by anattendant at another petrol sta-

tion of the same franchise thatpump-hanging is rife where heworks.

Syndicate“There are three attendants

who operate in a syndicate atthis station and steal a lot ofmoney during the peak times ofthe month,” the attendant whowishes to remain anonymous, said.“They watch the motorists

regularly and know who to tar-get. They are aware of whochecks the pumps and whodoesn’t,” he said.According to him it happens

quickly and it is very difficult tocatch them out and prove whatthey are doing, especially whensmall amounts are taken andthe cashier is in on it.A TygerBurger source at the

Motor Industry BargainingCouncil (Mibco), confirmedthat the practice of pump-hang-ing, although it has decreasedin the last decade, is still quitewidespread in the industry.“Ten years ago, about 30 % off

all staff dismissals at petrol sta-tions was due to pump-hangingand credit card fraud. I thinkthe decrease in this number cor-relates with the fact that em-ployees are more careful aboutretaining their employment,”he said.According to the group com-

munications manager of thepetrol company in question, thedealer involved in the first inci-dent investigated Samsodien’sclaim and found the following:“After testing the pump

again, even with the pump notproperly replaced all the talliesat the till and at the pump werein order. This includes the cus-tomer’s transaction.“The amount of the fuel asked

for is reflected at the till and theamount of fuel is dispensed andthen the transaction is complet-edwithpayment so there is verylittle gap for the theft of fuel orshort changing customers,” shesaid. She stuck to her commentafter being reminded that Sam-sodien’s action probably foiledthe alleged attempt.“All complaints are investi-

gated as they arise and any is-sue is dealt with within the let-ter of the law,” she said in astatement last week.

LIAM MOSES

Jordan Callies will throw caution to thewind and attack from the first whistlewhen they meet Sporting United in the

Coke Cup final on Saturday. The Manenberg side have played an at-

tacking brand of football all season andcoach Andy Barnes insists that nothing willchange for the tournament final.“We are going to play to our strengths

without focusing too much on the opposi-tion,” he says.“Our game is based on attacking and en-

tertaining football. It’s an integrated style offootball, based on African flair and Europe-an technical strength. It will be fast and at-tractive. We want the people to enjoy thegame.”Barnes tookover atCallies in January and

immediately implemented his philosophy.“It was a process. I had to change themen-

tality of the entire club and bring in profes-

sionalism,” Barnes says.

Talent“The determination and character of the

players carried it through. The players arequick learners and that brought us towhere we are today. It showsme that thereis an abundance of talent in Manenbergwhich needs to be developed.”The results his side have achieved on the

way to the Coke Cup final speak to thisnewly found commitment to attack.Callies beat Salt River Blackpool 4-3 in

the last 16, Bluedowns Spurs 3-2 in thequarter-finals and fought back from 2-1down to win 3-2 against Milano United inthe semis.Callies have also achieved in the Rygate

Local Football Association this season, winning the Premier League and losing inthe final of the Knock-Out on Saturday.Barnes says he rested several first team

players for the Knock-Out final against

Junction Rovers for the Coke final. He says no one expected his side to do so

well this season.“Everybody was writing us off. We played

five different Safa Second Division teams onour way to the final. We proved all the criticswrong. I planned properly and the players un-derstand. I played the right game plans andchanged it according to the opposition.”The former Ajax Cape Town coach watched

Sporting United see off Stephanian Ottery inthe semi-finals on Monday. He expects United to play “kick and

charge”, direct football in the final.“I have identified certainweaknesses in the

oppositionwherewe can capitalise. I’mpret-ty sure they have no ideawhatwe are up to,”Barnes says. “My team is hungry. TheyhaveManenberg and Heideveld behind them.Theyare going to goout there andprove theyare the best team in Cape Town.”Barnes’ side may have the support of the

area, but he says most supporters will nothave transport to Philippi Stadium. He has appealed for assistance in hiring

buses to transport the club’s loyal fans.Barnes can be contacted on 071 752 4812.V The Coke Cup final will take place on Saturday withthe under17 final starting at 11:30, the women’s finalat 13:00 and the men’s final at 15:00.
