Face time with PidolBy Bayani San Diego Jr.

IN THE LAST four years of his life, King of Comedy Dolphy granted the INQUIRER  Entertainment staff atleast three sit-down interviews.

... and complicated part,” Dol-phy said.

In mid-2009, Dolphy wel-comed us to his home andtreated the entire team to an af-ternoon of nostalgia and me-rienda.

This time, he had beside himZsa Zsa Padilla, his partner forover two decades. Together, they

were like a comedy tag team.Even in Zsa Zsa, Dolphy found aperfect comic foil. They com-pleted each other’s sentences, tried to beat each other to thepunch lines, as if by telepathy.

He explained why he had be-

come a home body and couchpotato: “I ended up with 18kids because I used to enjoy go-ing to nightclubs.”

Right before Christmas 2009,Pidol met up with the INQUIRER

again—this time, he was accom-panied by son Eric Quizon, whodirected his film Nobody, Nobody but Juan. The venue was the co-median’s favorite mall, Rockwell.

It was the Yuletide season andto see Dolphy having a regular

day at the mall was quite an ex-perience. Every holiday shopper who glimpsed our little groupcouldn’t help doing a doubletake. Faces lit up all around us.

Although usually low-key inpublic, Dolphy had a ready smilefor anyone. He gamely donned aSanta Claus cap when we askedto take some snapshots.

A year later, he became theSecret Santa of our corner of the office, when he gifted thestaff with a water cooler.

To this day, not everyone inINQUIRER knows that the waterdispenser is a gift from thegreat Pidol. So now we thank him, and think of him every time we get a drink. Cool.

In 2008, he would’ve gladly  visited the PDI office inMakati—but he learned there

were no lifts. We gladly troopedto Shangri-La Makati instead, andhad a rendezvous with Dolphy and another top comic, Vic Sotto.

Though the afternoon con- versation was set before theopening of their movie DobolTrobol, no topic was off-limitsfor the duo—not even their col-orful love lives.

Dolphy said he saw himself in Vic, particularly in the way the younger comic “loved” the

women in his life. “He’s alsoquiet,” Dolphy said.

“ Pero mas malikot ka,” Vicquipped.

Facing Vic squarely, Dolphy

said: “You will go through a lotmore. But there will come atime when you will settle downlike I did.”

They agreed on the mostpainful part of any relationship:Saying goodbye. “That’s difficult
