Matriekprestasies ’n ‘spanpoging’ANNETTE THERON
Hoërskool Bredasdorp is net so trots op hul98%-slaagsyfer.

Camp for two years before you buy and buildHad the rare privilege of being rained upon inbed last night; nothing serious like a missingroof, justaskylight leftopenbecause it shouldn’traininJanuary.Ofcourseahowlingnorth-west-erly during the afternoon and the weather fore-cast should have warned me, but sadly they gotit right. Early this morning the surf was stillgrowlingangrilyatbeingwhippedallnight long.
Talkingaboutthesitingofadwelling:plannersrecommend camping on a plot for at least twoyears to find out what the weather is like there.A close relative who moved to the Cape ignoredthis wisdom in looking for his building plot.
One sunny Sunday morning he and his wifedrove through Gordon’s Bay, unfortunately ona rare windless day when the sun sparkles onFalse Bay and the village and harbour look par-ticularly post-cardy. Wife was captivated, andimmediately went in search of an estate agent.
Couldn’t believe the modest price quoted for thestunning view site and bought it on the spot andstarted building a house.
Nowthemodest priceof theplot becameclear:gale-force south-easterlies in summer that mer-cilessly rattled every roof sheet andreducedgar-dening toadesperate search forplants thatdon’tstickupmore thanacoupleofcentimetresabovethe ground, or shrubby things that can be per-suaded to grow just a bit more horizontally thanvertically.
Their first winter brought a change, if notquite for the better: now the north-westerliessought out every crack and crevice throughwhich to force rainwater while opening everyclosed door and closing every open one.
I exaggerate, but once I had passed a few sea-sons on my own plot further down the coast, liv-ing in a caravan while I considered a suitable
design and its siting, I had a far better idea ofwhat I was likely to face. The response was a ga-bled roof, with the ends facing north-west/southeast, a roof structure of solid gum poles boltedtogether and concreted into the walls and roofsheets nailed down through every corrugation.
On the morning after a particularly roughnorth-westerly, during which the roof creakedlike a sailing ship in a storm, I walked out to findmy neighbour below me, leaning over the fence.
“How’s your roof?”, he enquired.“Thought I’d lose it, but luckily still there,” I
said. “Yours?”“Sitting at the bottom of the field, all in one
