WHAT FOOD CAN DO FOR/TO YOUSUPER HEALTHY FOOD
1. Apples are packed full of antioxidants, especially vitamin C for healthyskin and gums - one apple provides a quarter of your daily requirementof vitamin C. Apples also contain a form of soluble fibre called pectin thatcan help to lower blood cholesterol levels and keep the digestive systemhealthy. An apple is also a carbohydrate with a low glycaemic index (GI)type.Low GI foods are digested slowly; once they are finally broken downin the intestine they are gradually absorbed into the bloodstreams as glu-cose, causing a gradual rise in blood sugar levels. They may help withweight control, as well as improving diabetics' long-term control of bloodsugar levels.2. Baked beans is a nutritional powerhouse of protein, fibre, iron andcalcium. It contains carbohydrate that, like that in apples, is of the low GIvariety. The tomato sauce covering baked beans is also a good source oflycopene, another powerful antioxidant shown to help prevent heart dis-ease and prostate cancer. The insoluble fibre in baked beans is not di-gested but moves into the large intestine, or colon, where bacteria act onit and produce short-chain fatty acids. These fatty acids are thought tonourish the colon lining and protect it from carcinogenic (cancer-causing)invaders.3. Broccoli contain antioxidants including vitamin C and is a particularlygood source of folate (naturally occuring folic acid). Increasing your in-take of folic acid is thought to be of major benefit in preventing heart dis-ease. Broccoli also contains an antioxidant called lutein that can delaythe progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This affects10 % of people over 60 and is a major cause of impaired vision and blind-ness. Finally, broccoli also contains a phytochemical called sul-phoraphane that has specific anti-cancer properties.4. Olive oil Several large studies suggest that the monosaturated fat inolive oil is good for the heart. Olive oil lower bad cholesterol levels andincreases the good levels. Olive oil is also rich in antioxidants but watchout for the calories - a little goes a long way. A tablespoon of oil contains120 kilocalories, which is the same as a large slice of bread and butter.5. Wholegrain Seeded Bread have a low GI, which can protect againstheart disease, reduce hunger pangs, and help with weight control. It’spacked with fibre, which keeps the gut working efficiently; and containessential fatty acids. Including four slices of soya and linseed bread aday can give a does of phytoestrogens, through to relieve "hot flushes" inmenopausal women.6. Salmon. All fish is a source of good-quality protein, vitamins, and min-erals, but oily fish such as salmon also contains omega 3 fats that re-duce blood clotting and inflammation. Studies show that eating oily fishdramatically recues the risk of having a heart attack, even in older adults.Omega 3 fats also help to prevent depression, and protect against theonset of dementia. Fish really is an all-round brain food.
7. Tea The drink loved by all Britons has a range of useful properties. The caffeine content is helpful for stimulating alertness, mood and motiva-tion. Tea counts towards the recommended eight cups of fluid daily, which is the minimum to avoid dehydration. Tea, whether black or green,is a rich source of the antioxidant called catechins. Studies suggest thatcatechins protect the artery walls against the damage that causes heartdisease and prevents formation of sticky blood clots.8. Yogurt is an easily absorbed source of calcium. It's also a useful milksubsitute for people who can't digest large amounts of the milk sugar, lactose. Yogurt has long been credited with a range of therapeutic bene-fits, many of which involve the health of the large intestine and the reliefof gastrointestinal upsets. The bacteria Lactobacillus GG, added to someyoghurt, are not digested, and reach the large intestine intact where theytop up the other friendly bacteria living there. The friendly bacteria fightharmful bacteria, including Clostridium difficile that can cause diarrhoeaafter a course of antibiotics.9. Bananas are not fattening. Bananas are slightly higher in energy thanother fruits but the calories come mainly from carbohydrate; excellent forrefuelling before, during or after exercise. All types of fruit and vegeta-bles contain plant chemicals or phytochemicals known as antioxidants. These antioxidants protect cells in the body against damage from freeradicals that can cause heart disease and cancer. Bananas are also jam-packed with potassium that helps lower blood pressure, and vitamin B6for healthy skin and hair.10. Brazil nuts or para nuts are one of the few good sources of seleni-um that may help protect against cancer, depression and Alzheimer'sdisease. All nuts are generally full of essential vitamins, minerals andfibre. Recent studies suggest that eating a small handful of nuts fourtimes a week can help reduce heart disease and satisfy food cravings.Contributed by Ingrid Koolbergen

My flight was being served by an obviously gayflight attendant, who seemed to put everyone in agood mood as he served us food and drinks. As the plane prepared to descend, he came swish-ing down the aisle and told us that 'Captain Mar-vey has asked me to announce that he'll be landingthe big scary plane shortly, so lovely people, if youcould just put your trays up, that would be super.'On his trip back up the aisle, he noticed this well-dressed and rather Arabic looking woman hadn'tmoved a muscle. 'Perhaps you didn't hear me overthose big brute engines but I asked you to raiseyour trazy-poo, so the main man can pitty-pat uson the ground.'She calmly turned her head and said, 'In my coun-try, I am called a Princess and I take orders from noone.'To which (I swear) the flight attendant replied, with-out missing a beat, 'Well, sweet-cheeks,in my coun-try I'm called a Queen, so I outrank you. At the Sunday morning church service, the minister asked ifanyone in the congregation would like to express praise foranswered prayers.A lady stood and walked to the podium. She said, "I have aPraise. Two months ago, my husband, Tom, had a terrible bi-cycle crash and his scrotum was completely crushed. Thepain was terrible and the doctors didn't know if they couldhelp him."You could hear a muffled gasp from all the men in the congre-gation as they imagined the pain that poor Tom must haveexperienced.
"Tom was unable to hold me or the children," she went on,"and every movement caused him terrible pain. We prayed asthe doctors performed a very delicate operation, which last-ed for over five hours, and it turned out they were able topiece together the crushed remnants of Tom's scrotum, andwrap wire around it to hold it in place."Again, the men in the congregation were unnerved andsquirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible sur-gery that was performed on Tom.
"Now," she announced in a quavering voice, "thank the Lord, after six weeks, Tom is now out of the hospital and the doc-tors say that with time, his scrotum should recover complete-ly."All the men sighed with relief. The minister rose and tenta-tively asked if anyone else had something to say. A manstood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said, "I'm Tom."The entire congregation held its breath. "I just want to tell mywife that the word is sternum."

CATERING SERVICEI will never hear church bells ringing again withoutsmiling..Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had justpassed away, Katie went straight to her grandpar-ent's house to visit her 95-year-old grandmotherand comfort her. When she asked how her grandfa-ther had died, her grandmother replied, He had aheart attack while we were making love on Sun-day morning.' Horrified, Katie told her grandmoth-er that 2 people nearly 100 years old having sexwould surely be asking for trouble.Oh no, my dear,' replied granny. 'Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the besttime to do it was when the church bells wouldstart to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice andslow and even. Nothing too strenuous, simply in onthe Ding and out on the Dong.'
She paused to wipe awaya tear, and continued,'He'd still be alive if theice cream truck hadn'tcome along.'
