We are happy to see all of you back this year and hope to meet more new friends who share our love of painting. Our annual Mystery Paint-In is just around the corner, as are the Creative Painting Convention in Las Vegas, and our own SDP National Convention here in San Diego. Think goodie bags, mystery teacher, great raffles, trade show floors (open, open, open) and painting, painting, painting! I can’t wait. In case you missed it, we had a great time painting zebras with Lori Hillstead in January. You could have heard a pin drop in the room when we started on the zebra manes, but we eventually loosened up and even stopped holding our breath. Thank you so much, Lori, for your wonderful start to our painting year. The zebras were so much fun to paint, each with their own personalities, and raising the question “Do zebras have white stripes on black or black stripes on white?”** Our next class, with Karen Ortman, is almost here, so don’t forget to sign up if you are interested in painting the lovely garden door piece. You might also want to scope out Mari- lyn’s garage sale and free stuff tables for items to paint on for upcoming classes. I already scored a great hard-covered gar- dening book to use for Lori’s next class. There are lots of treasures to be had if you use your imagination. That’s all for now. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi Ladies, We are one month into the new year and your board and committee members are already hard at work planning and organizing a great year of projects and painting opportuni-ties. You might also want to scope out Mari-lyn’s garage sale and free stuff tables for items to paint on for upcoming classes. Musings on the January Paint-In

What a great day our January Paint-In was. Students painted zebras and giraffe spots on various surfaces. Lori Hill-stead has a wonderful easy-going teaching manner. If you haven’t taken a class from Lori, she will be visiting us two more times this year. Don’t miss out learning her new and different techniques which add so much to her paintings. Steps to paint and create her projects are very descriptive. And, repeated several times to help convey to us, just what we should be doing through each step. Many of her pieces have multi-media items intertwined on her surfaces. So “out-of-the-box”! Good food, great raffle prizes, and lots of mingle time rounded out the day. (MD)

Happy February to all, especially to those 5 members having birthdays during this month of love! My moth-er used to play "The Glory of Love" on the piano, so I thought it would be apropos for this month's newslet-ter! Remember to contact me if you learn of anyone needing a cheerful note: [email protected]. Sincerely, Teri Hayes

The Glory of Love

by Billy Hill

You've got to give a little, take a little

And let your poor heart break a little,

That's the story of,

That's the glory of love.

You've got to laugh a little, cry a little

Before the clouds roll by a little

That's the story of,

That's the glory of love.

As long as there's the two of us

We've got the world and all its charms

And when the world is through with us

We've got each other's arms

You've got to win a little, lose a little

And always have the blues a little

That's the story of,

That's the glory of love.

Philanthropy The members of the San Marcos Mobile Home Estates Home Owners Association recently expressed their thanks to all of our chapter members for our donations to their 2015 holiday food drive. They were very happy to receive our donations and the help for their needy neighbors. We asked about year round donation options and were informed that they do keep a small pantry of food stocks. What that means for us is that if you have a spare can or two, or get a good deal on a buy one get one free, bring donations with you to any monthly paint-in and we will see that your donations are delivered to their food pantry. Thank you so much for your recent and future donations.

San Diego County Fair 2016 (a.k.a. Del Mar Fair):

The theme this year is “Mad About the Fair: Weird, Whacky & Whimsical” and is described as a fusion of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with the artistic movement known as Steampunk.” We will be joining with the San Diego Brush Whackers to demonstrate our art form on July 2 and 3rd. If you want to participate in demonstrating and make-it/take-its, please contact Charlotte Hicks ([email protected]). Demonstrators receive a free fair entry pass. This year we are also returning to chapter participation as award donors. (Yay!) Let’s make a great showing this year by submitting a project to the competition. You will need to go online at (www.sdfair.com) between March 4th and May 6th and register your entries. There is a small fee of $10.00-15.00 per

entry. Project drop off dates are May 17th and 18th, and Linda Silvasy has volunteered to collect and take entries down

to the fair to make it easier.

SDP News

SDP is working hard to keep all members "in the loop". Some time ago, many of us signed up for electronic notifica-tions. As your SDP liaison I want to be sure you receive information without filling your inbox with duplicate mailings. Beginning in February I will be forwarding all SDP messages to all current PHP members unless you let me know you would prefer no additional e-mail. Just drop me a note letting me know you are opting out and I will remove you from my SDP mailing list. Carol Ganzi [email protected] Carol Ganzi

Views from the PHP Garage Sale Table

The garage sale table is up and running. Lori Hillstead’s bird clock, in May, uses a hard-covered book. February’s table will have many usable books for this project. And all for $1.00 each! The table is in need of any painting books, surfaces, and packets you want to donate from your stash. If you can’t make it to a meeting soon, call or e-mail me for a pick up. See you on February 13 at “The Table”. Marilyn D. (760) 740-9794 or [email protected]

Pot Luck Lunch

Thanks to Pam Myers, Kathy Steffel, Sue Bond, Candy Sciarretta, Linda Silvasy, Mary Mitchell, Cheryl Powell, Charlotte Hicks, Renee Molloy, and Kenna Perrin for sharing your yummy dishes during January’s Paint-In. I will be contacting some of the gals on the February list. Please remember to provide a serving plate or dish and a serving utensil. Marilyn D. (760) 740-9794

Gift Certificates Please keep in mind throughoutt the year that chapter has the best gift ever for your painting friends. You can pur-chase a “free class” gift certificate or get together with several gals for a special occasion gift. Marilyn D. (760) 740-9794 [email protected]

Raffles

Ramona Jacobs put together another wonderful raffle for the paint-in today which brought in over $240. Raffle items were donated by Ramona Jacobs (which included two very cute little snowladies she made), Sharon Carlen, Jeanne Robert, Merle Avery and Sue Bond. Lori Hillstead donated a sewn pillow to paint today’s project on which was won by Candy Sciarretta.

Pam Myers, who always buys lots of raffle tickets, was the big winner today with four wins! She explained that she belongs to several different organizations, Rotary, etc. and usually re-gifts some of her raffle winnings to those organizations. We advised Pam to buy a Powerball ticket on her way home today. Stay tuned…. Other winners were Marilyn Dixon, Charlotte Hicks, Charlene Butler, Mary Mitchell and Kathy Steffel.

Peanut Butter Bomb Bars (Charlotte Hicks)

Ingredients: Cookie Layer: 1 (17.5 oz) package Krusteaz peanut butter cookie mix, water, egg, and vegetable oil as called for on pkg of cookie mix Nougat Layer: 4 tablespoons butter 1 cup sugar ¼ cup evaporated milk 1 ½ cups marshmallow crème ¼ cup creamy peanut butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup salted peanuts, chopped Chocolate Layer: 1 cup milk chocolate chips ¼ cup creamy peanut butter Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray the bottom and sides of a 9 x 13” baking pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine cookie mix, water, egg, and oil until a soft dough forms and press into the bottom of the baking pan. Bake for 15-17 minutes (do not overbake). Let cool. While the cookie layer is cooling, melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the sugar and evapo-rated milk and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and immediately stir in marshmallow crème, peanut butter, and vanilla. Add peanuts and stir until incorporated. Pour mixture over the peanut butter cookie layer and spread evenly. Place pan in the refrigerator (or even freezer) to set the nougat quickly. In a small bowl, combine chocolate chips and peanut butter. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Microwave again for 30 seconds and stir until creamy (you may need to repeat microwaving one more time). Pour chocolate mix-ture evenly on top of the nougat layer. Return pan to the refrigerator and let the chocolate layer set up. When chocolate is hardened, cut into bars and serve. Makes 24 bars. (Recipe from www.sixsisters.com)

Minutes of Board Planning Meeting on January 3, 2016

A board meeting of the Palomar Heritage Painters was held January 3, 2016 in the meeting center at San Marcos Mo-bile Home Estates. The meeting was called to order at 9:15am by President Charlotte Hicks. The Secretary, Jeanne Robert, being present. Review of the SDP guidelines for Board and Committee Reps and binder contents/purpose were passed out to officers of the board. Minutes of the previous meeting were published in the newsletter and were approved. VP Programs, Kenna Perrin and Renee Molloy were given the binder and other materials by outgoing Vice President Sue Bond. VP Membership, Sheila Elliott. A discussion was held regarding chapter membership fees. The fee is $15 for one year, after January 31st, the fee increases to $20. Many people have not renewed their membership and we will reach out to them to rejoin. We expect to have 70 members in 2016. New members will get a welcome letter, decoupaged pin with design and chapter roster. The budget for 2016 was presented by Treasurer Marilyn Dixon. This is a separate listing from the minutes. Ramona Jacobs made a motion that the budget be accepted. Seconded and approved. Newsletter editor, Leslie Pilcher discussed advertising in the newsletter. We don’t charge other chapters to advertise their paint-ins. The newsletter is published on our website and we mail out six black and white copies to members who don’t have access to a computer. The aim is to publish the newsletter two weeks prior to the next paint-in. It was sug-gested that there be a comments section from the prior class. Treasurer, Marilyn Dixon requested that expense forms be turned in as soon as possible. Larger purchases must be ap-proved by the president. Sunshine chair, Teri Hayes stated she has birthday cards ready to be sent to all current members. She urges members to report to her anyone who is ill, having surgery, or has a loss of a loved one. Historian Donna Carpenter will turn over all the old notebooks. A committee will go through them, select a few high-lights which will be scanned and put on the website. The old books will be discarded. Linda Silvasy will do a power point presentation. Outreach. Question was asked if we could give gift cards to the park in addition to the food that members bring in. Linda Silvasy was told she can purchase fabric and be reimbursed for her class to make pillowcases that they donate to Rady Children’s Hospital. New Business. Charlotte Hicks said we need to update the by-laws. Teri Hayes volunteered to be on the committee. Member at Large/Mobile Home Liaison Sue Bond stated that members could bring in food donations throughout the year, not just at the end of the year. Seminar Chair, Karen Ortman stated we will not have a seminar in 2016 because of the national convention being held in San Diego in June 2016. She is contacting people for a 2017 two-day seminar. Raffle Queen, Ramona Jacobs requests members to bring in items for upcoming raffles and to return baskets from prior raffles for reuse. Meeting was adjourned at 12:50pm. Jeanne Robert Secretary

Member News Congratulations to member Carolyn Miller who had a baby boy, Nathan Wil-liam, on January 17. Member Sandra Miller is the proud grandmother and Leslie Pilcher is Nathan’s great-aunt. (When WAS the last time one of our members had a baby???)

Last week, former member, Liz Briel, donated to PHP lots of wood for our raffle and garage sale tables. Liz gave our chapter many years of service. She is a founding member & a past President and held many different jobs during her years as a mem-ber. Joanne Schutz visited with Liz and sent us a picture. Doesn't she look great ? A note of thanks is on it's way.
