I’ve been out in my garden doing clean up, trimming, and planting until I’ve run out of daylight. When I sit down to ad- mire it all, I am reminded that gardening is a little bit like painting. Pink flowers just happen as my baseline. I choose and love purple and reds together. Corals add new shades to the red and purple. A bit of yellow makes all of the colors pop. But before you get to enjoy all of those wonderful and color- ful flowers- you have to work with shades of browns (soil, compost, fertilizer) to prepare your garden. So it was with painting the lovely 49 Victoria Lane project with Karen Ort- man during our February class. We spent lots of time painting with browns to establish the foundation and background for the lovely leaves and flowers. Karen kept us motivated and focused as we laid down all the layers that made for a beauti- ful product. Thank you so much, Karen, for sharing your pas- sion and talents with us. Thanks also to the ladies who con- tributed to our potluck lunch and fabulous raffle. With the SDP convention coming to San Diego in June and our participation at the San Diego County Fair in July, the topic of representing our chapter has come up for discussion. It would be wonderful if all of you would wear your chapter pins on your painting aprons or shirts. If you put your pin in a safe place and can’t find it or never painted yours, we will have replacement pins (painted and decoupaged by Sue Bond) for sale for $5.00 at upcoming meetings. Yay! The Mystery Paint-In is next, and all 40 seats are full. I can’t wait to see what the committee has planned for us. Please read your newsletter and email blasts to keep updated and informed. That’s all for now. See you soon with brushes in hand and ready to paint. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi Ladies, It’s been a “chamber of commerce” week-end for weather. I’ve been out in my garden doing clean up, trimming, and planting until I’ve run out of daylight. When I sit down to ad-mire it all, I am reminded that gardening is a little bit like painting. Pink flowers just happen as my baseline. I choose and love purple and reds together. Corals add new shades to the red and purple. A bit of yellow makes all of the colors pop. But before you get to enjoy all of those wonderful and color-ful flowers- you have to work with shades of browns (soil, compost, fertilizer) to prepare your garden. So it was with painting the lovely 49 Victoria Lane project with Karen Ort-man during our February class. We spent lots of time painting with browns to establish the foundation and background for the lovely leaves and flowers. Karen kept us motivated and focused as we laid down all the layers that made for a beauti-ful product. Thank you so much, Karen, for sharing your pas-sion and talents with us. Jack Ragland Class in April

We are very fortunate to have Fallbrook artist, Jack Ragland, teach at our April Paint-in since he is a Fine Artist who does not typically teach classes for Tole and Decorative painters. But, he LIKES us!!! Jack will be teach-ing a small still life for us on April 9th. He was a longtime art teacher at the college level before becoming a full time artist. His works are in private, corporate, and public collections in the US and Europe, including the Los Angeles County Museum, and museums in Austria and Paris. With Jack you learn a little bit about perspective, art history, old masters, and techniques that bring life to a painting. I would tell you that, for me, it’s worth the class fee just to listen to him talk and watch him paint.

Chapter ByLaws Update: It’s time for us to do a long over-due update/revision to our chapter bylaws, as recommended

by SDP. I am looking for a couple of members who are interested in sitting on the committee to help with this process. If you have some time on your hands and are willing to help, please send me an email ([email protected]) and we can schedule a date to get started. Cof-

fee and chocolate will be provided as needed.

San Diego County Fair 2016 (a.k.a. Del Mar Fair): The theme this year is “Mad About the Fair: Weird, Wacky & Whimsical” and is described as a fusion of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with the artistic movement known as Steam-punk.” We will be joining with the San Diego Brush Whackers

to demonstrate our art form on July 2 and 3rd. If you want to participate in demonstrating and make-it/take-its, please contact Charlotte Hicks ([email protected]). Demonstrators receive a free fair entry pass. This year we are also returning to chapter participation as award donors. (Yay!) Let’s make a great showing this year by submitting a project to the competition. You will need to go online at (www.sdfair.com) between March 4th and May 6th and register your entries. There is a small fee of $10.00-15.00 per entry. Project drop off dates are May 17th and 18th, and Linda Silvasy has volunteered to collect and take entries down to the fair to make it easier.

Board Meeting Minutes February 13, 2016

A board meeting of the Palomar Heritage Painters was held February 13, 2016 in the meeting center at San Marcos Mo-bile Home Estates. The meeting was called to order at 12:55pm by President Charlotte Hicks. The Secretary, Jeanne Robert, being present. Minutes of the previous meeting were published in the newsletter and were approved. VP Programs, Kenna Perrin and Renee Molloy. Since the painting schedule for the next year does not come out until March, sometimes the signups for the April class fall short and that is the case for the April 2016 class. Bobbi Ta-kashima suggested we send our painting schedule to the other chapters who are in Southern California. VP Membership, Sheila Elliott stated we have two new members and that the membership is around 70 people. Treasurer, Marilyn Dixon has nothing to report. Secretary, Jeanne Robert has nothing to report. Newsletter editor, Leslie Pilcher had a question of when PHP was actually founded. There are two different dates on our website. Sunshine chair, Teri Hayes thanked all of those who have passed along information on people having surgery, etc. New Business, Charlotte Hicks will put a notice in the newsletter for a committee to update our bylaws. Ways & Means, Bobbi Takashima said she is contacting friends in the decorative art business for donations. Mystery Paint-in 2016, Kenna and Renee stated that the class is full at 40 people. Mystery Paint-in 2017, Karen Ortman said she has a prospective teacher. San Diego County Fair, Charlotte has talked to San Diego Brushwhackers about doing a shared demonstration booth on Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3. Participants will get a free ticket to the fair. A friend of Sue Bond’s has do-nated several hundred small wood boxes that can be used for a “make it take it” project. Charlotte also said PHP will do three monetary awards, $50 for Best of Show and two $25 awards. Linda Silvasy has volunteered to take any pieces that members want to enter in the fair. Christmas party, Mindy Rupp said it is in the planning stages and she has a committee. Hospitality, Marilyn Dixon said in May we should have a baked potato bar that chapter will finance. Member at Large, Sue Bond said that we paid for hasps for the park’s cabinets. Audio Visual specialist, Linda Silvasy will work on the speaker system. The new system has a piece that goes over the head and some teachers found that quite uncomfortable. She will type up set-up instructions with photos of the camera and projection system. Meeting was adjourned at 1:40pm. Respectfully submitted, Jeanne Robert

We had 2 guests for our lunch time board meeting and they were impressed with our area of food. Several recipes are here in this newsletter........tested by PHPers !! Marilyn D,

Happy March to our three very lucky birthday girls, Sandy, Jackie, and Deb! March is the month of lepre-chauns and pots of gold for those who catch them and make them pay!! My mother used to say that there are only two kinds of people in the world: those who are Irish and those who wish they were. Of course, her mother came from County Galway and there is absolutely no bias here! This old Gaelic blessing would be apropos as our

birthday celebrators blow out their cake candles, launching birthday wishes skyward: May the road rise with you, may the wind be at your back, and may the Lord hold you in the hollow of His hand. Don’t forget to notify me if anyone needs some sunshine: [email protected]. Sincerely, Teri Hayes
