PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE Happy Mother’s Day to all our mom’s in the chapter. We need something joyful to happen to us this month and I hope you all have a splendid day celebrating with your families and loved ones.

It’s been two months since our chapter has been able to get together and I know you are missing each other. It’s been difficult for us to postpone scheduled classes and to learn our planned conventions (NET), San Diego County Fair and other seminars (Jamie Mills Price, JoSonja) were similarly postponed. We also heard our own Bobbie T. made the decision to close her Lily Pad Shop which was heartbreaking to hear. She is a part of our chapter and we will al-ways be there to help and support her.

Some members have been using the Internet App-Zoom to keep in touch with each other. It’s an excellent tool to keep people connect-ed during social distancing and thanks to Leslie we were able to have a Zoom Board and Committee meeting April 24. One of the best piece of news we learned in the meeting is no one from our membership has come down with the virus. So thankful for that. Each committee gave their updates which you can read about in the Board meeting minutes of the newsletter. Our events- MPI 2020 (rescheduled), Rosemary Seminar, Christmas party, and MPI 2021 are all still ‘a go’ and in the planning stages.

The Board discussed ideas to mitigate the postponed classes, so we are going to try something new until we can get back into the Mo-bile Home Park. Linda S., Debi and Leslie are working on bringing some of these classes to you using the ZOOM App. This sounds like a great idea and we are willing to give it a try. You will be hearing from these ladies on how to get your pattern, setup and class times. If you have already signed-up for a class that has been postponed and cannot attend the ZOOM replacement class, there is no issue in getting a refund. Contact Debi for information.

What are you doing to keep busy while staying isolated? After all the rain we had I have been busy in the garden and enjoying the ros-es first bloom of Spring. It feels good to be outside. We are so lucky to be decorative artists during these times. I am finishing up one of the Ways and Means projects to keep up with Ramona and Susan who each have the other two projects. I am also busy trying to get my unfinished project stack smaller.

I keep thinking of our first class when we can ‘return to normal’ at the Mobile Home Park and how much fun it will be. Stay safe and well,

Happy painting,

NEWSfrom1stVicePresidents(Programs) We are still here! As we all adhere to the CDC guidelines and stay home, some may be wondering about the future of our painting calendar. Well, there is some news to report. First, the mobile home park is still closed and will probably stay closed for some time, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still paint together! Leslie and I are currently working on an option of “distance” painting using our technology as so many artists have done in the past. The idea of painting our projects via the internet is a great way to continue our calendar and keep our connections with each other. Right now, we are in the beginning stages, but we hope to be able to inform you how this may work for us. I know there we be apprehen-sion for those who are not a comfortable with technology, but rest assured, we are here to help. Of course, we hope our normal meeting place will open sooner rather than later, but there is no de-termined date, so keep reading the newsletters and keep SIGNING UP for classes. Debi and I will get instructions to you either by email or snail mail. Leslie is sending out our original calendar so mem-bers can see what is upcoming. So please sign up! Seminar is still on so far, so if you want to sign up, send your money to Debi to secure your spot. If something changes, we will let you know. The Os boxes will be here in June for anyone who pur-chased one. Also, if you ordered a box from Onya, we will get it to you, and if you signed up for her class and didn’t get directions, let Debi know. MPI updates, as of now we are looking to September as a date, the committee will keep you updated. I wanted to give a heartfelt thank you to Marilyn Dixon, over the past few years she has gone through literally hundreds of old photos of chapter happenings. She organized them, gave many back to mem-bers and then passed them on to me to scan. WOW!!!!! I’ve included a few to trigger your memories, more to come.

From CynthiaMegill: Finished up my fence. I loved being out there wav-ing and talking to neighbors at a safe distance, seeing the kids play in the cul de sac. And I actual-ly learned something—like next time plan ahead—ha ha!!! Finished the pieces from the CRA convention last October. Keep painting!!

From TeriHayes: Teri left this past weekend for her new summer home in Idaho. Her stay-at-home time in Fallbrook has been very productive!

Members Keeping Busy! LinHenderson:Painted these little tags for my grand children’s goodie bags. Also tried my hand at Mackenzie Child’s look for the eggs. The eggs were trickier than I thought.

From LoreanWeng: My newest student Haru... I just can’t get him to hold the brush correctly ... he’s my painting buddy

From SandyGarcia: Hi everyone, just a note to say I have been purging my drawers and closets to the point where I now have empty spaces. However, my dining room is now so packed with bags full of stuff because I can't go to the thrift store so I keep piling it in. It will take a pickup truck to get it all there at one time, but you know, it really feels good to do this. The only prob-lem is I haven't wet a brush during these past weeks but I hope to get back in my studio once I am done with the house. Hang in there and be safe, this too will pass and we will all get back together. I miss you all and want to see each and everyone of you once we are allowed to meet. Again, stay safe.

From AnitaLane: Latest projects — Now moving on to Christ-mas!!

From DebiStivers: Painted this with Laurie Speltz on Facebook live FREE class

From KennaPerrin: Finished my oil piece and am pulling a lot of weeds!

CharleneButlerreports: I do wish I could say I've been doing something interest-ing or creative. I'm not. I'm grateful that we are consid-ered an essential industry and are still able to work and keep the boys employed and paid. By the time I get home I'm too tired to move or think. Week-ends, with-out the paint ins, it's yard work one day and housework the next, then back to work. Tiresome but keeping the business open in it's 51st year.

From OnyaTolmasoff: On my table… Working on my ‘freehand’ skills along with Tel-emark Rosemaling on a Canvas Boat Bag. Us-ing a monochromatic palette. De initely a work in progress. Onya Tolmasoff

From ReneeMolloy:Finally inished these two Jamie Mills-Price pieces. I picked up the patterns at the Vegas Convention.

From ShirleyMcDonald:I inally inished this quilt that my hus-band’s grandmother started over 60-70 years ago. Some of the blocks are hand stitched , others I did by machine. The whole quilt is 57x68. The backing is a sheet I found in my mother-in-law’s closet, very old. I’ve had it for at least 35+ years waiting to be inished up. Now inally done!

CharlotteHicksloved receiving this lovely, hand-made card from MerleAvery.

From CarolynMiller:Watching daughter, Colleen, thrive taking Zoom Art clas-ses! Look at that closeup! Do we take them as young as 7, almost 8??

Orders can be placed with me, Bobbie T via email: [email protected]. Payment is via PayPal. I will invoice with customer's email. From CarolGanzi:Very little painting going on here. Still SLOWLY recovering from the macular tear surgery in my left eye. It’s been two months and may take another 2-4 months. Three months ago, who would have believed discovering VIVA paper tow-els would make you want to do a “Happy Dance” in the aisle of the grocery store?! I’m doing a lot more cooking than usual. ChickenWithCitrusAvocadoSalsa4 8-ounce chicken breasts I large Haas Avocado - diced I large ruby red grapefruit - diced 1-2 tbls chopped fresh basil (or cilantro) OPTIONAL 1. Lightly salt and pepper both sides of chicken breasts. 2. In large heated skillet, brown chicken on both sides (1-2 minutes per side) When golden, reduce heat and cover, cooking until chicken is completely done 3. While chicken is cooking, toss grapefruit and avocado to-gether. If using cilantro or basil, add it now. 4. Place one chicken breast on each plate, spoon salsa on top

From CindySmith: Cindy has inished these adorable bird-houses for her Christmas tree — from wood that she picked up from the PHP Free Table She has also made masks for her family.

From RamonaJacobs: Hello to all from our house, We have kept busy with yard work and the daily grind of housework, laundry etc. Rob is creating a new brick walkway in our front yard. I've inished a few painted pieces. Next up, getting the binding on a couple of quilts. Stay safe everyone! can't wait to see you all! Ramona

MYSTERY PAINT-IN 2020 Following the latest public health guidelines, our fabulous Mystery Paint-In event has been on HOLD and our painting venue at San Marcos Mobile Estates is closed. We have a tentative reschedule date of Saturday, September 19th. Please under-stand that rescheduling is very “fluid” right now and is contingent on health advi-sories, teacher availability, and when our venue will reopen. We thank you for your patience and will keep you informed of updates as we have them.

OnlineClasses Linda Silvasy and I took a 5-hour Zoom class with teacher, Lonna Lamb, on Saturday, May 2. It was a really pos-itive experience for both of us. The class was completely interactive: we signaled to the teacher/monitor when we were ready to go to the next step; we had the ability to show our work to the teacher and get feedback; and, we could ask questions at any time. Not to mention, the up-close and very clear video, It was like sitting right next to the teacher and watching her paint every stroke. We highly recommend that you seek out and try one of these classes. There are a lot of choices right now — from freeFacebook demonstrations, teacher website videos, and professional zoom video courses. The best place to ind out about them are the Facebook pages: TolePaintersUnite,SDP:AnArtfulConnection,DecorativePaintingNews, andCindyHarrison’sTheArtfulConnection (formerly Debbie Cole’s site). Linda & I are looking into Zoom possibilities for PHP also, We’ll keep you posted.

Outreach During these trying times, it’s important to remember that while we are inconven-ienced, there are others who are not sure where their next meal is coming from or whether they have a roof over their heads.

Let’s change things up this year and start our food drive a little early. We have a great opportunity to really make a difference for so many people who are much less fortunate. We’d like to ask each of you to donate directly to Interfaith Food Bank in Escondido. We won’t be collecting a mass amount and making a single donation due to social distancing. However, if each of you could donate a bag of non-perishable groceries to the foodbank directly, what an impact we could have!!

The address and phone number for Interfaith Community Services are:

550 W. Washington Ave. Escondido, CA 92025 (760) 489-6380 I hope you all are staying safe, enjoying family, and maybe even trying out a few new recipes! Thank you for your generous help!

So for the month of May 2020 I will not be getting my Nora Jones tickets or taking my Pet-co Park Tour or participating in the Rock N Roll Marathon Expo or seeing the San Diego Padres play the Chicago Cubs in a baseball game. Nor can I participate in the Old Town Cinco de Mayo Fiesta or the Walk for Animals or the Del Mar National Horse Show and the Exploring Italy: A Wine and Culinary Journey where guests will be treated to a mul-ti-course wine-paired dinner, events which are supposed to be taking place on May 2nd

but now postponed or even cancelled. But I can have my own multi-course wine-paired dinner with recipes I’ve been wanting to try and use my good china and crystal wine glasses. As somebody said, don’t save the good stuff for later, use it now. An excerpt from one of Erma Bombeck’s columns titled, “If I Had to Live My Life Over” says: “… I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have talked less and listened more. I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded. I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room. I would have sat on the lawn with my kids, even if it meant grass stains.” Let’s make this season of our life—whatever it is—just a bit more special with the special things we tend to save. Let’s break out the good plates for pizza night, for a quick snack. Bring out the “fancy guest” towels for your family. Spritz on perfume for the grocery store. Use fancy pens to write our to-do lists. Those special things we have? It’s special alone to even have them. We’re doing right by them to use them well. Let’s acknowledge the privilege of saving for special—because it really is. Years ago Oprah talk about this very thing. She mentioned that she uses her good crystal every day and talked about the difference between owning things or being owned by them. I’m one who routinely avoids using things to keep from using them up/damaging them/losing them or some other form of irreparable material object peril. The list is pretty long; my mother’s china, my daddy’s stemware, the shoes I spent a small fortune on, my beautiful scarves my

husband bought in our early years of marriage because he didn’t know what else to buy me. Now I’m swimming in stuff that I love but don’t really appreciate and stop loving because I see it as clutter. Now is the time when many of us are downsizing and getting rid of stuff. How many of us have said “look at the beautiful dishes or the quilts that many people have never seen, even people who have been friends for years”. The answer is usually “I was saving them for special and now even my children don’t want them.” Let’s better enjoy the little things in life. And let’s make them even more special by using up the good stuff. Don’t wait for that perfect mo-ment—it’s already right here. So to all of our painting friends who have a birthday in May, celebrate it by eating dessert first and pour a glass of that champagne you’ve been saving for a special occasion into one of your crystal wine glasses. Enjoy your day in a new way that doesn’t involve going to your favorite restau-rant for dinner or getting a dozen roses. Use your imagination to make your day special and celebrate just being you! So far this year we’ve missed our Mystery Paint-in, the April painting class with Cindy Smith and are about to miss the May class with Bobbie Takashima. That means we’ve missed seeing our painting buddies every month for that’s a big part of our monthly paint-ins. If you haven’t already reached out to one or more of your buddies that you look forward to catching up with each month, please do it now. And if you have heard of any of your buddies who are ill either with the Covid-19 or other flu viruses going around, or any other illnesses, surgeries, etc., please let me know so I can send them a get-well or just “thinking of you” card.
