PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Sunshine and Flowers Sunflowers that is! What a great day we all had developing layers of colors on watercolor paper creating beautiful sunflowers, and what a great new teacher we’ve added to our already large pool of amazingly talented teachers. Thank you, Janet. Hope we have more great painting experiences to come.

RoseAnn Linsley has arranged time for our chapter to visit the Brush Guys, who have a warehouse in the Mission Viejo area. Saturday, Sep-tember 7, from 9:30-10:00 is our slot. Their space is limited so they needed to spread it out for the morning. Plan to carpool and enjoy the experience. They are located at:

The Brush Guys: 23881 Via Fabricante, Suite 515

Mission Viejo, CA 92691 (949) 472-1355

I want to personally thank Terry Hayes in her diligent efforts to secure a new board for next year. It is looking good and the final approval from membership will be at the Christmas party on December 7, 2019. However, we will still need committee volunteers for the 2021 year. So please step up, grab some friends and help us out.

I also wanted to thank the membership for supporting the mobile home park by donating an additional $5 at the time of membership that will go directly into the gift card/outreach fund for the park’s Bingo Nights. We have purchased gift cards and provided a small amount of cash that will take our commitment through this year. Thank you, Carol, for put-ting this together and she even added a little note to each stating it was a donation from our club. Great way to advertise! I will have a jar at each paint in if anyone wishes to donate to the gift card fund.

September is Ways and Means month. Jeanne will draw for the 3 beau-tiful pieces donated this year. If you haven’t sent your tickets and mon-ey to Jeanne, do so quickly, you are running out of time.

We are scheduled for the last general raffle at the October paint in. Please help and bring something for this raffle. You will receive 5 tick-ets for your donation.

Be sure to sign up for classes coming up, they are wonderful, and re-member the Christmas party is December 7, 2019 from 11-2. If you donate a raffle, you will get 5 tickets to spend. We are not having a gift exchange this year. Instead I will have the gift card jar available for donations to the mobile home park.

On a personal note, I had the wonderful opportunity to be a full-time grandma for three of my grandchildren ages 5,7 and 13. I had them for 3 weeks! The only question I have is, how did I ever do this day in and day out? I slept really well at the end of the day.

NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs)

August 10 class: Sun-flow-er We had a very relaxing class with Janet Mitchell, a new teacher to our chapter coming from Hesperia. Janet taught a sunflower using acrylic paint and stamps on water color paper. Lots of raffle prizes throughout the day sponsored by Janet plus everyone was treated to a bag of her home made caramel corn to snack on. Most students had their projects finished in class that day. We were thrilled to have Janet teach our class and are excited that she will submit a project for the vote next year. A special mention to member Nancy Wozniak who donated a wonderful raffle prize- a beauti-ful Sunflower quilt. Nancy is a master at sewing and puts together fabric to make beautiful pieces. A huge thank you to Nancy for that donation which was won by lucky Ramona.

September 14 class: Provence Café Get your canvas’s out. Jack is ready to teach you a ‘café’ scene reminiscent of Europe. Last year’s class Jack offered much individual attention to each member so if you are a little shy in painting on canvas you will get a lot of ‘one on one’ help. Choose any size canvas but no smaller than 8x10 inches. Paint can be oils or convert colors to Jo Sonja Acrylics. Patterns available.

October 12 class: Graveside Raven Join us to paint our Halloween piece this year because it is spooky. Ravens sitting on gravestones- sign me up. Sandy Garcia is our teacher for this class and I am sure she will make it a fun one. If you want your painting on a paddle, they are available at World Market or choose a piece of wood from your stash. Sandy has suggested using a Dome Round brush (M77DR stipple brush 3/8”, Royal Lang nickel) when doing the background in class. This brush is available from Royalbrush.com. Sandy may have a few of the Dome Round brushes for sale on class day. Project will be on display during the September class if you want to view it. We are going to have some extra fun during this class so wear your Halloween ‘tea’ hat. You won’t want to miss this class. We are also doing a raffle this month with plenty of FALL items. Patterns available.

November 9 class: Christmas Duo We are getting ready for Christmas with a head start on two projects. Carol Ganzi has an exciting day planned for you teaching you two fun pieces. For those who signed up for the wood pieces- your project kits are ready for pick up. ($18.00 payable to Carol Voyles). In your kit, the round ornament “Waiting for Mail” has already been prepped for you -just spray it with a matte spray, put your pattern on and do some minor prep painting. Your Prudy Vannier piece “Discussing the Route” needs sealer and prep base coating done. Kits are sold out from Programs, but we have a few of the circle ornaments available. The teacher is supplying the paint for this class courtesy of Deco Art. Patterns are available.

The month of September is the 9th month of the Gregorian calendar, but it is also a period of great transition. In September the last days of Summer are spent and the cool Autumn season begins. With the changing leaves and lower temperatures, the autumn equinox takes place. September is also home to many national and interna-tional holidays, including National Grandparents' Day, Mexico's Independence Day (Sept. 16) and the beginning of Oktoberfest in Germany. It also celebrates Cheese Pizza Day (Sept. 5), Blame Someone Else Day (the first Friday the 13th of the year), and National Ask a Stupid Question Day (Sept. 28). Rosh Hashana begins on Sept. 29. The birthstone of September, the sapphire, is most desired in its pure, rich blue color but is present in almost every color including pink, yellow and green. The two zodiac signs associated with the month of September are Virgo and Libra. People born from September 1st to September 22nd are members of the Virgo sign. As one of the zodiac's most understanding and caring signs, a Virgo can be easily spotted by their innate compassion. For those born from September 23rd to September 30th, they are members of the Libra sign. They can be identified by their organized and harmony-driven personalities. Karen Krause was born September 11. She is clear in her mind about what she wants out of her life. As a Virgo, she is pretty sure of her position in life and she is not afraid of a little hard work or to put in long hours. Karen shares her birthday with Taraji P. Henson and Harry Connick Jr. Lorean Weng was born September 12. She is characterized by her reserved and sensitive nature. Some may de-scribe her as shy, but this only stems from her preference to stay out of the spotlight. She shares her birthday with Jen-nifer Hudson among others. Patti Wolinski was born September 15. As a Virgo born on September 15th, her artistic sense and sensitivity are amongst her most dominant personality traits. She appreciates art in nearly any form, which is a talent she applies to her individual style. Her artistic flair does not make her want to be the center of attention however she would much rather carry out activities in the background, where she is most comfortable. Patti shares her birthday with Prince Har-ry, Tommy Lee Jones, Dan Marino (football player) and Marco Polo.

Ramona Jacobs was born September 17. As a Virgo born on Sep-tember 17th, she is characterized by her sensitive, artistic and reserved nature. While some people live for the spotlight, she cannot relate. She is comfortable to share all of her private thoughts and feelings with family and close personal friends. Ramona shares her birthday with Hank Williams Sr., John Ritter, and Nate Berkus. Sheila Elliott was born on September 26. Being a Libra born on September 26th, she is as diplomatic as she is imaginative. She loves to be social and are most comfortable in the group settings. In her work, as well as socially, she is creative and imaginative, which is a fact that her peers greatly enjoy. Her imaginative and harmonious qualities even apply to her sense of dress, which always seems to be creative, yet easy on the eye. Sheila shares her birthday with Serena Williams, Olivia Newton-John (who turns 70!), and Linda Hamilton (movie and tv actress whose credits include Terminator films and the TV show Beauty and the Beast)

Ways and Means 2019

The annual Ways and Means drawing will be held at the October Paint-In. Winner need not be present to win although it’s always more fun that way. To date I have received money from 38 members, about half of our total membership. The Ways and Means raffle is generally our largest fundraiser of the year. The three projects will be displayed at the September Paint-In so you can see how wonderful the three en-tries are. Ziplock bags will be provided for you to put your tickets in. Extra tickets will be available at the Paint-In or you may call me if you wish to receive more tickets.

Thank you for your participation!

Here are the three submissions:

1. Watercolor painted by Alden Avery. Donated by Merle Avery.

This beautiful scene would look wonderful with all décor. The finished piece is approximately 11” x 14” and is beautifully framed.

2. Ornament box painted and donated by Sandy Garcia.

This round box is approximately 18” across. Chapter members are donat-ing ornaments to place inside the box and will be included.

3. Four Season Ottoman and Storage Chest painted and donated by Cynthia Megill.

This design is by Heidi England and measures approximately 2’ x 2’ x 2’. This is a wonderful piece that is beautiful and useful. There is a pillow on the top that turns it from storage to extra seating.

Palomar Heritage Painters General Meeting Minutes

August 10, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 p.m. .

Christmas Party 2019

Pam Myers will be preparing name tag pins. Marilyn Dixon will be handling Raffles. Table decorations for the 5 tables will be done by Linda Silvasy, Sandy Garcia, Dee Bristol & Arla Lucas, Bobbie Takashima, and Marilyn Dixon. Allowance for table decorations is $50 per table.

Given the projected income from Raffles, the break-even point for the luncheon will be approximately $23.50. Therefore, $24 will be the charge for attending the Christmas Party. A motion was made and approved to offer four free Christmas Party entries as prizes at the October Paint-In Raffles. Carol Voyles will print the certificates for these.

The Theme of the Christmas Party will be “A Festive Fiesta”. It was suggested to continue last year’s practice of drawing a num-ber between 1-8 to determine the recipient of the table centerpiece. Each seat at the table will have a number between 1-8 as-signed to it. There will be NO gift exchange at this year’s party.

Raffles

It was suggested that anyone bringing a fully-prepared Raffle Prize to any Paint-In Raffle OR the Christmas Party Raffle should receive 5 Raffle tickets in appreciation. The next Paint-In Raffle will occur in October. For the 2019 Christmas Party, there will be an overall budget of $300 for out-of-pocket expenses for Raffle prizes. These must be submitted to Linda Silvasy (as de facto Committee Chair).

Reimbursement for Expenses

We were reminded that any claim for out-of-pocket expenses must be submitted to and approved by the Committee Chair, who will sign and then submit the claim to the Treasurer.

Nominations for 2020 Board Positions

Teri Hayes, as Nominating Chair, is currently finalizing a slate of candidates for 2020 Board Positions. These will be voted on and installed at the Christmas Party in December. Voting positions on the Board are President, 1st VP- Programs, 2nd VP – Mem-bership, Secretary, and Treasurer. Non-voting Committee Chairs are the Christmas Party, Mystery Paint-In, and Ways and Means. Non-voting Volunteer Positions are Hospitality, Newsletter, Sunshine, SDP Liaison, Del Mar Fair, and Garage Sale.

Membership

We will be advertising the Early SDP Membership Renewal Program where members who renew by September 30 receive 3 free e-packets. Simultaneously, we will be ready to accept PHP Renewals by late August. Dues will increase to $20 -- $15 for dues and $5 for Mobile Home Park Support.

Bylaws

Given the recent announcement of the cessation of Annual SDP Conferences in favor of 4 regional mini-events, our bylaws were reviewed as to the allowance the PHP President receives to attend the Annual Conference. It was decided that the current bylaws will allow the President to receive the allowance to attend the Regional event.

Other Business

Linda Silvasy has volunteered to head a Seminar Committee for 2019 or 2020.

Program Committee - Project Submittal Forms for 2020-21 have been mailed to prospective teachers.

There will be a Halloween Tea at the October Paint-in, similar to the Tea we had last year in October.

Our Outreach Program to the San Marcos Mobile Home Park was discussed. We do have a sponsor resident in the park, but our standing has been somewhat diminished since the departure of Sue Bond. The board decided to spend the remaining $200 in our Outreach Budget on Gift Card Prizes for the monthly Bingo nights. (We will still give $300 to the park’s annual Thanksgiving dinner and contribute to the food and toiletries drive in December.) We consulted with the Bingo organizer who was thrilled with this offer. She suggested Gift cards for grocery stores, gasoline, and pharmacy (e.g. CVS) as being the most appreciated. Carol Voyles will be responsible for purchasing these cards to be used during the remainder of 2019. The gift cards will be presented with the PHP logo and a message that we are the donors. We will also have a Jar for Park donations at every Paint-In.

We will revisit this issue during our 2020 Budget meetings. The Board feels strongly that we must continue to support the Mobile Home Park in different ways to retain our free access to their facilities. A motion was made & carried to increase our mem-bership dues to $20/year. The extra $5/year would go to this support.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:54 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Leslie Pilcher
