The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters
Vol 31, Issue 10 October, 2014
President’s Message
Hi Ladies, I was going to start this message with a comment about how the weather has cooled down and fall has begun, but it looks like the mercury is on its way back up again. Maybe that will give us motivation to paint pumpkins and fall leaves and Halloween decorations so we can at least experience Fall through our art. Lori Hillstead’s Fall Welcome project on October 11th meets that need exactly for me. The colors are so warm and vibrant. I can’t wait . If you have not signed up, you might want to give this one another look and join the class. We are also having our Ways and Means raffle drawing on the same day. Don’t forget to bring your tickets and put them in the buckets. You just might be the happiest painter in town if you win the lovely ribbon embroidery piece by Linda Silvasy or the amazing painted piece by Sandy Garcia. Talking about signing up for class brings me to another important issue that keeps coming up recently. Paints. Supplies. Sigh. The big box craft stores are carrying less and less of the products and paint colors that we need for our projects. Michaels does not carry some of the most basic Decoart colors. I have even had painters tell me that they could not find palette paper! This means that we (me) should look ahead (further ahead than the night before the project), see what supplies are needed, and then go into hunting mode. Maybe one of your painting buddies has the colors and is willing to share? Maybe you can substitute something you already have? Maybe you can order from an online company? Or maybe one of our two remaining local shops might have what you need? Chapter member Donna Carpen-ter (Art Creations Plus) can order supplies if you call her, and can have them delivered to you via the “Painting Lady Pony Express.” It is going to be harder and harder to wait until the last minute to prepare for a class (mea culpa), so please look ahead. I have posted a listing of some online sources and the contact info for our local shops in this newsletter.

“To paint is to live — through painting the simple things around us take on a new beauty...” Priscilla Hauser
Whew! Almost done. I would like to thank our own southern belle, Sandy Garcia, for her wonderful Santa class last month. That was a fun project to paint and it was even more fun looking at how differently each of the Santa faces turned out. I had to paint mine with blue eyes because that’s how the Santa at my house looks. I am disappoint-ed that we did not take a group photo so you could see all of the differences in per-sonality. J Thank you again, Sandy, for sharing your talents with us. I think I hear the call of pumpkin. I am very tempted to bake some pumpkin bread even though it’s supposed to get hot again. How about you? Have you given in to the call of pumpkin? That’s all for now. Time to get busy. Happy painting. Your President,
Charlotte

** Lori Hillstead’s “Fall Welcome” as a Banner:
Here is a quick picture of the banner so you can see the shape.
Cut a 12" x 18" piece of roclon. That will allow you approx 1-1/2" on top to fold over
and hang on dowel. From bottom, measure up approx 5-1/2" and chalk a line. Pattern
is placed above this line. You will need to reduce the pattern. (I don't remember how
much). You might want to reduce the pattern first before you cut the banner just in
case you need to make any alterations.

Ways and Means 2014
Our Ways and Means offerings for this year features:
A “Framed, Ribbon Embroidery Bouquet” created by Linda Silvasy &
A “Stationery Box” painted by Sandy Garcia.
Both pieces are truly beautiful and unique; and surely it would be an honor to be the lucky person to win ei-
ther one of these handcrafted works of art and display in your home.
The drawing will be held this year at the October painting class; extra tickets will be available for anyone
wishing to increase their chances of winning.

MEMBERS SECTION From Cynthia Megill:
During our recent trip to Russia we visited a resort and artists' enclave on Mandrogy Island. The painting
there was overwhelmingly beautiful, and the artists are working as you make your way through the displays
of jewelry, weaving, nesting dolls, lacquer boxes and birch bark carvings. But this style caught my
eye. They call it simply "cotton", maybe because it looks like cotton print material. Couldn't get enough of
it!! Maybe we should try it sometime. Anyone game?
Thanks to Linda Silvasy for sharing her variation on Lori Hillstead’s White Lilies piece—using an actual ter-
ra cotta pot cut in half, instead of the pot painted on canvas. I did mine this same way and really love it.—Ed

PHP Philanthropy Update from Charlotte: -We purchased and donated a replacement microwave for the kitchen at the San Marcos Mo-
bile Estate’s clubhouse last month because theirs was stolen. We have been looking for ways
to support the association for allowing us to use their clubhouse free of charge, and this op-
portunity just presented itself.
Additional outreach projects are detailed below.
Outreach
Food Drive
Once again we plan on having a food drive for San Marcos Mobile Estates. They were so ap-
preciative of our support last year and want to do it again. We will have you bring them at
the Christmas Party on Dec 13th 2014.
Canned Veg & Fruit & Beans Chili Tuna Canned Meat/Chicken Canned Soup/Stews
Dried Fruit Nuts Mac & Cheese Hamburger Helper/Tuna Helper Pasta Rice
Pasta Sauce Ramen Cup O Noodles Dried Beans Peanut Butter Crackers
Instant Soups Bisquick-Pancake Mix Syrup Cereal Dry Oatmeal
Instant & Regular Coffee/Tea Sugar Flour Dry/Canned Milk Juices
Shelf Stable Puddings Mayo Mustard Catsup Pickles
I'm sure they would also like toiletries too. …… Sue Bond
Toy Drive
We are also collecting TOYS for Rady Children’s Hospital, so bring your unwrapped NEW
toys for either boys or girls to the Christmas Party on Dec 13th….. Sue Bond
Pillowcases for Children’s Hospital
Linda Silvasy’s students have been making pillow cases to be given to children in hospitals
for years, and if you would like to donate fabric for her students please bring it anytime. She
needs at least 1-1/4 yards of cotton or cotton-blend, which makes a pillowcase and a draw-
string bag to hang on the children’s I.V. pole. She would like the fabric to be more kid ori-
ented, not so adult — especially for younger boys 4-9 and 13-18 (trucks, cars, transformers,
action figures). Linda and the kids would appreciate any help you can give. Any questions,
please contact Linda Silvasy @ [email protected] …..Sue Bond

Editor’s Note:
This list from Charlotte is a wonderful idea and
will become a permanent part of our website and
newsletter. All websites are “hyperlinked” so
you should be able to just click on them and the
site will open up in your default browser. Please
let me know any websites or local sources that
you find that we should include. With the maga-
zines shutting down and the big-box shops reduc-
ing their painting supply inventories, we are
needing these online resources more and

General Meeting Minutes September 13, 2014
Meeting called to order at 12:35 pm by President Charlotte Hicks.
Reading of Minutes. Jeanne Robert moved to have minutes approved as printed in the newsletter. All approved.
VP Programs, Sue Bond has been sending out notices for next project year. She reported that people are saying they are having a
hard time finding paint at local stores. Donna Carpenter/Art Creations has a shop in El Cajon. Paints can be ordered through her
and someone can bring them to the next paint-in. Either contact Donna by phone or email Charlene Butler or Mary Weflen to
order paints. Donna has many paints in stock in her shop.
Texture Crackle is on the sunflower project which has to be done well before class to allow it to dry. A demonstration was done
during today’s class.
VP Membership. Cynthia Megill said 4 or 5 people have already renewed for 2015. National’s fee goes up by $5 on December
1. Send Cynthia a receipt by email. Cynthia is looking for someone to take over her position next year.
Treasurer, Joanne Schutz reported we have approximately $11,000 in our bank account.
Newsletter Editor, Leslie Pilcher has already done her first newsletter and is doing a great job.
New Business. We try to find a way to give back to the mobile home park where we paint for free each month. The microwave
in the kitchen was stolen after hours so Sue suggested the chapter purchase a replacement. This was done.
We will have the food drive for some of the needy residents at our Christmas Party again this year.
Charities, Linda Silvasy has a group of 24 students that make pillow cases. Temecula Assistance League donates $200 a year for
supplies. Students have made over 1000 so far this year. Pillowcases are donated to local children’s hospitals. Leftover fabric
makes a drawstring bag that patients hang on their bed or I.V. pole. Fabric can be donated any time.
Toys for Rady Children’s Hospital at the Christmas Party. Guidelines will be published in the newsletter. Alicia Ortman
Kintzele will be at the party to pick up the toys.
Ways and Means. Linda Silvasy said that October paint-in is the drawing. She still has tickets available at $1 each.
Christmas Party. Cost will be $15. Lunch will be catered, followed by Installation of Officers and (optional) gift exchange.
Garage Sale/Potluck Lady, Marilyn Dixon stated it was a fun lunch today. Be sure to pick up leftovers. Sign up sheet for next
month is on the table.
Raffle Queens, Deb Lakin and Karen Ortman said that if anyone has something to donate for the raffle, bring in and give to either
one of them. Items can be painted objects or “nice” white elephant objects.
Paint Works magazine has been discontinued.
Show and Tell. Linda Silvasy brought in her project from August. Instead of the small canvas at the bottom with a clay pot
painted on, she cut a small clay pot in half with a Dremel drill and used that.
We would like to have more items for Show and Tell, so if you’ve painted something recently, bring it in and share.
After a paint-in, write one or two sentences to be published in the newsletter and send it to Leslie Pilcher
Meeting was adjourned at 1:10pm.
Respectfully submitted by,
Jeanne Robert, Secretary
