When tame TIMES staff and Hope in Jesus Ministries members pulled up to the park in Glenesk on Saturday, long lines of both children and adults had already formed in anticipation of their visit. While the organisers of the event set up tables and the soup-pot, warm hugs and friendly greetings were exchanged; then everyone joined hands to make a large circle, and prayed before the meal was served.A cup of hot soup, bread, fruit, biscuits and packets of chips were given to each member of the Glenesk community. This was all made possible by the support of tame TIMES readers, as tame TIMES had been calling on the community for a month for donations of soup mix, bread, blankets, old clothes, shoes and cash. We are very grateful to our readers, who stood together and made it possible for tame TIMES to collect two bakkie-loads of goods with which to bless two communities:

Glenesk and South Hills.tame TIMES would also like to commend Hope in Jesus Ministries for doing the work of God and being obedient to His command to help the poor. Members of this church feed the less fortunate every day, and do it with the love of Jesus, wanting not only to fill empty stomachs but also to fill hearts with the Good News and make fishers of men. This outreach could not have happened without the help of Hope in Jesus Ministries, which allowed tame TIMES to partner with them in their feeding scheme outreach in these areas.Special guests at the event, who made the day an especially memorable one, were Johan Herbst, a 2014 Mr SA finalist, and the JOY dogs and their owner, Sue Green. Although the Glenesk children were rather apprehensive of the dogs at first, by the end of the morning a number of brave boys and

one little girl had plucked up the courage to touch them, and showered the animals with love. tame TIMES staff were humbled to hear parents thank them for helping them to feed their children and to see the smiles on the little ones’ faces as they received such previously unheard-of luxuries as biscuits; but there were also some heart-breaking moments. One barefoot little boy came running up to the box of clothing to ask for a pair of socks and a young girl came to us to plead for a scarf.

Lisa Katzke, tame TIMES PRO officer would like to thank everyone who contributed in the form of food, clothing or cash donations, as well as those who gave their time. You made it possible to bless those who are less fortunate.

The count-down can definitely begin now that we have passed the halfway mark of 2014 and (if you are reading this) safely arrived in the thirtieth week of the year. Just when I thought there was nothing more to be excited about with the World Cup ending and leaving us with severally disrupted sleeping patterns, Mandela Day presented itself and, what a day – I feel very proud that I am South African and that he was ours. On the topic of the World Cup, well done to Stephen Davey (our Production Manager) for winning the office World Cup pool. He did well, I must say, for a man who does not believe in soccer, and I hope his victory will change his beliefs about the sport. This week’s edition is full of editorial about Nelson Mandela Day activities. I really enjoyed covering these and, as an afterthought to my experience, I think we still have some goodness in us – we just need to focus the spotlight more on the good than the negative. We have our regular competitions on page 10, so check them out and take a chance – one for the guys to look out for is the Gauteng Motor Show competition, in which ten of our readers stand a chance to win family tickets. Music-lovers – catch our Time OUT with the wonderful Thato Burhali (page 9). If you have some time, check out this young lady’s music on Soundcloud and catch some of her videos on YouTube – I love her. If there are any interesting individuals that you would like to see in this feature, please write to me and we can make a plan to get in touch with them.Stay Blessed

18 July is a day commemorated by the whole world. South Africa’s former statesman, who was also our country’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, was a man who inspired the world and exemplified some of humanity’s most sought after values of goodness. In 2009 the United Nations, in recognition of his contribution to the now natural democracy of our formerly racially divided nation, declared 18 July (Nelson Mandela’s birthday) an internationally commemorated day when everyone on the planet is encouraged to spend 67 minutes in service of others. All around Germiston and Bedfordview, members of corporate society, civil servants and ordinary community members spent the day giving through various projects. tame TIMES had the privilege of sharing in some of the philanthropic exercises and, with all the 67 minutes of goodness given on the day, it is our belief that 24 hours were not enough to profile even half of these initiatives. The Elsburg SAPS started their day bright and early with two initiatives in Buhle Park, where they began the day by handing out blankets to elderly and needy members of

that community. The police, who generally spend their days in service of the community, were not done after their initial 67 minutes; later in the morning (joined by IEMAS Financial Services) they shifted their focus to the younger ones who, according to Station Commander Col. V Arikum, were the truly deserving beneficiaries of Mandela’s efforts.Ward 39 Councillor Michael Kriek, and some volunteers of the Democratic Alliance (DA), spent their Mandela Day giving not only for today, but also for tomorrow. They played with children from the Rondebult community, and Clr Kriek and the DA’s volunteers also provided food for learners at Siyakholwa Academy, as well as donating a generous number of children’s books. One other inspiring example of service within our area was the service of a group of learners from Germiston’s Galway Primary School who spent Mandela Day beautifying the environment around their school, and the retirement village opposite the school. Speaking to tame TIMES, Makisha Brand, a prefect at the school, said, “We are doing this small activity, not to show off but to improve the school’s environment not for us, but for future students. We never experienced a racially divided South Africa because of the efforts of past generations, so really this is our responsibility.”

Early child development is a complex process, with many lessons learnt at this fundamental phase having far-reaching effects, including a child’s aptitude for certain subjects. One of the most important skills that will have a significant impact on an individual’s life is mathematics – the ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide. Depending on the profession one pursues in life, mathematical skills are vital in problem-solving, which is why the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), through Engenius, is encouraging an appreciation of maths in the nation in order to prepare more citizens for a career in engineering. Engenius has gathered some pointers for parents who want to develop a love for maths in their children from an early age. Sandisa Maqubela, who facilitates Engenius, recommends a few simple, yet effective, activities that parents can do to increase their children’s love and understanding of maths, to reinforce the skills learnt in school.

Loose changeMost families have a jar or a container in which they collect loose change. Over time, this container can become quite full and a task you can get your children to do is to count the money in the jar. This will give them a practical lesson in addition, and it will increase their understanding of money and denominations. They may also be allowed to buy a treat with some of the money.Patterns are imPortantPatterns are a great way of learning, and they are all around us, in art, furnishings and even paving. You can also increase your child’s interest in patterns through activities such as jigsaw puzzles, dominoes and tanagrams. When you are in the mall, you can count the different coloured tiles as you walk between aisles. a famiLy that PLays together stays togetherFamily games such as snakes and ladders, Uno, and Connect 4 can help children

learn valuable skills in a fun and enjoyable way. These games help develop children’s counting skills, as well as addition, subtraction and division. As the children get older, as a means of developing strategic thinking skills, parents can introduce Monopoly, backgammon, chess and even Jenga. These can be competitive, so be prepared for some sibling squabbles.BuiLding BLocksFrom a very early age, children like to stack things on top of each other. Let your child play with mathematical shapes such as blocks, Lego and even Meccano. These are very helpful as they provide the child with a concrete perception of shapes and space at an early age.read them Books that incorPorate mathsMake the kids connect with maths even in story-time. Read them books in which the main characters solve a problem using maths, such as One Hundred Angry Ants by Ellinor J. Pinczes, The King’s Commissioners by Aileen Friedman and Socrates and the Three Little Pigs by Tuyosi Mori. You will be increasing their aptitude in maths subliminally, especially if they struggle with it.show them that maths is everywhereIncorporate maths into their everyday experience; show them symmetrical shapes in nature, pricing in supermarkets, and geometry in buildings. Make up games linked to vehicle registration numbers on long trips. Count the number of certain models of cars on the way home from school. Teach them about time while baking – they can count the minutes while their cupcakes bake. Make simple tasks like boiling eggs fun, by letting them set the egg-timer. “As parents balance their cheque-books, buy shoes, measure distances and check their time, they should include their children in these activities, to get them excited about maths,” concludes Sandisa.

is it wrong for Parliamentarians to wear red overalls? is it appropriate and necessary for ministers to drive in massive blue-light convoys? is it acceptable for leaders of national debates not to know the state of affairs on their farms? Questions, questions and more questions, but no answers – well, none which address the real issues. The current content, relating to politics and the manner in which politicians relate to each other and the parties they represent, which is being fed to the population, is very distracting. If the above-mentioned debates are going to be allowed to occupy the highest conversation platforms in the land then, honestly, the voter is being betrayed – the reality is if politicians were honest about their desire to impact positively on the lives of the voters, who have placed trust in their ability to lead the country, they would realize that in (almost all instances) the battle between bread and the

colour of an imported work-suit will result in bread taking priority. A false sense of security, especially prevalent among members of the middle class, plays a major role in the way that these politicians choose to address issues of real substance. I should actually rephrase this thought and state that issues of real substance are not even entertained – but we are all surprised when the pot boils over. The lengthy platinum industry wage strike is not an indication of the strength of local labour unions, but it is a definite indication of leadership’s unwillingness to set in place measures that will protect the citizens who have put their trust in them, and to police them adequately; it was a perfect example of the pot boiling over.I do not write this piece with the intention of causing an uproar; all I’m trying to do is to bring to your attention that when we (especially within the middle class) willingly consume irrelevant issues we are not doing the country (especially the lesser fortunate, and critically exploited) a favour. If anything, this nonchalant attitude lends itself to a condescending attitude towards the often violent eruptions of the ignored. We keep quiet at our own peril; sure, the economy is not at its strongest, but when governments (for whatever reason) sell out their people, the results will not be pretty. Educationsouth africa’s young artists dug deep this year in compiling their entries for the 2014 absa L’atelier art competition. Protest, introspection, an awareness of our earthly roots and the human condition were all explored through the exceptional works received, with the top four entries being announced on wednesday 16 July at the absa gallery. Pretoria’s Liberty Battson took the overall award and main prize for her diptych, Odds of an artist like me, while Mbavhalelo Nekhavhambe from Thohoyandou was awarded the Gerard Sekoto Award, sponsored by the French Embassy and the Alliance Française in South Africa, for the most promising artist with an annual income of less than R60 000 for his video installation, Press Accident. Johannesburg’s Bevan de Wet was one of two Merit Award winners for his etching and relief entitled Decorus in Gryphus II. The second Merit Award winner was Durban’s Luyanda Zindela, recognised for his photographic print Umkhumbi wakaMedusa. Dr Paul Bayliss, Absa Art and Museum Curator, said, “a number of the submissions tapped into the theme of Absa’s creative campaign for this year’s contest – that of Great Art takes Blood, Sweat and Tears. We used this theme to promote the 2014 Absa L’Atelier Art Competition. It proposes that great art is not something that just happens; it is a conscious process that sees the artist putting pieces of themselves into their work through the intense effort, dedication and raw emotion that it takes to bring an artistic concept to life. Battson’s prize included R150 000 from Absa and a six months residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Nekhavhambe also won a return air-ticket to Paris and three months’ stay in the Cité Internationale des Arts, sponsored by

Alliance Française in South Africa and the French Embassy. This year’s Merit Award winners also received residency prizes, with De Wet winning two months’ stay at the Sylt Foundation in Germany and Zindela one month’s stay at the Ampersand Foundation in New York. The top 100 competition entries are available for public viewing from 17 July 2014 to 21 August 2014 at the Absa Gallery, Upper Ground Level, Absa Towers North, 161 Main Street. Members of the public are requested to bring their ID books along for parking and entrance purposes.

For the first time in the history of the Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards® (CCA), South Africa’s comedy-loving community will know ahead of the show who will be performing on the night. Not only will six awards be handed out to SA’s top comedians, but there will also be comedy to remember. Prepare to be hit by a whirlwind of delight, surprise, hysterics and that kind of squirm-in-your-seat discomfort that only perfectly timed sharp comebacks can deliver. Now in its fourth year, this year’s variety show is themed The Point of Funny and promises to deliver the most laughs yet. Each skit will be delivered by the talented and somewhat eclectic cast that includes well-known names like: Jack Parow, Rhys Woods, Nik Rabinowitz, Robby Collins, Chris Steenkamp, Pule, Debora Patta, Gilé Motshwane, Loyiso Gola, KG, Deep Fried Man, Tats Nkonzo, Bevan Cullinan and Riaad Moosa.Barry Hilton, Khanyi Mbau and Darrel Bristow-Bovey are some of the presenters, with three more high-profile names to be announced soon. The event format is simple and will specifically exclude any dull or boring speeches. future of comedy in SA, we push to find new ways to use The Teatro at Montecasino through technology and execution. Last year, we pushed the physical boundaries of the building, and augmented reality with graphics – this year, we are focused on the funniest possible night we can, with a few bells and whistles chucked in for fun,” say co-directors, Dani Hynes and John Vlismas. The Savanna CCA ceremony will take place at The Teatro at Montecasino on 2 August. Singer-songwriter James Blunt will be performing his Moon Landing concerts at the Carnival City Big Top Arena on 14 and 15 February next year. Big Concerts and Carnival City are urging eager Blunt fans to book their tickets quickly to avoid missing the mega-star’s live performance.James Blunt originally captured the hearts of hopeless romantics the world over with his debut album Back to Bedlam. Two of his most popular songs come from this album: You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover. The album sold over 11 million copies worldwide, topping the UK Albums Chart and peaking at number two in the US. Moon Landing is Blunt’s fourth album and a follow-up on his 2010 Some Kind of Trouble. His first new album in three years, it can be described as raw, direct and emotionally honest. The album features production from the likes of Steve Mac, Guy Chambers and Steve Robson and was executively produced by Tom Rothrock, who worked with Blunt on the 2005 Back to Bedlam. His latest singles, Bonfire Heart and Postcards, are climbing the international and local charts, proving to be another two big hits. Fans will be treated to songs from this album and Blunt’s earlier albums in an intimate setting. Tickets to the two Gauteng shows went

on sale on Tuesday 8 July. According to Carnival City’s Entertainment Manager, Jaco Saayman, tickets are selling like hot cakes and he urges Blunt fans to secure their seats soon. Tickets are available via www.bigconcerts.com and vary in price from R395 to R735. The shows at the Big Top Arena are two of only three shows Blunt will do while in South Africa. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, now showing at Ster-Kinekor Southgate, is an enthralling science fiction film directed by Matt Reeves and starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell. The Sequel to 2011’s franchise reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, picks up ten years after the events of its predecessor. With most of the human race obliterated due to a deadly virus that apes are immune to, Caesar is living peacefully with his family and crowd of ape revolutionaries. However, the arrival of a small group of human survivors looking to ensure their survival challenges everything Caesar and his followers have fought to achieve.Under a terrifying sci-fi premise, the film manages to become a challenging, intense,

emotional experience that is well worth two hours out of a weekend. Choosing moral complexity over blockbuster spectacle, this film is separated from its big budget competition by its depth of story and character. But, after the engaging characters and thrilling plot, the main triumph of the film is its innovations in performance capture technologies, resulting in one of Serkis’s most exhilarating performances. Despite the operatic action sequences and breath-taking effects, it is still possible to find fault with the film, particularly with Gary Oldman’s character and his seemingly generic backstory. However, an assured story with a mature ending and relatable characters makes Dawn the best sci-fi blockbuster currently showing at cinemas.

Former member of the University of Johannesburg’s Lebone Ladies Residence Serrie (2007 – 2010), Thato Burhali (26), is an acoustic funk soul singer-songwriter. Currently employed as a corporate financier, she participated in season 9 of South African Idols in 2013 and made it to the top 33. She also released a house song (For You) that same year with the famous Twins-On-Decks, which was aired on various radio stations, including Five FM and YFM. tame TIMES caught up with the rising star and got to know her a little better through the following conversation:

tame TIMES (tT): Thank you for taking this time to chat with us and allowing our readers the opportunity to get to know you better. Most people will remember you from the Idols competition of 2013. Would you say you have changed since then?Thato Burhali (Thato): I was, and still am, a singer-songwriter who likes to share what’s in her heart and the lessons I learn along the way. Idols was a fantastic platform but it did not alter my sound or mission - it only fortified my conviction that music is what I was born to do.

tT: What does an ordinary “Thato Burhali” day look like and how do you balance your music with your other obligations?Thato: There is nothing ordinary about any of my days. On a good weekday I wake up, hit the gym and then head to the office. After work there are studio sessions, rehearsals or I’m catching up with friends over dinner or drinks. I try to schedule in some guitar practice but that doesn’t go so well most days. Weekends are also quite busy with Buzz, which is a drama, dance and singing company that I work for. Buzz’s focus age group is children between the ages of 5 and 9. It is exhausting but extremely rewarding.

tT: You are not a full-time musician; would you say the industry is friendly to new- comers? Thato: This industry is almost a foreign animal to me. I think what is most frustrating is that there is no clear pathway to success and everyone needs almost to craft and mould their own formula. I think what one needs to become successful in this industry

is patience, tenacity and a great deal of self-belief.

tT: What has influenced your style and your chosen genre? Are there any musicians who you would say have inspired your musical style?Thato: I am naturally drawn to more folksy/jazzy/soulful music as opposed to full-on belting RnB tunes. I think these genres resonate with me more; I can feel the emotion more and the people that sing that style of music have a vocal tone closer to mine. I definitely think listening to Corinne Bailey Rae, Colbie Caillat, James Morrison, Robyn, Amy Winehouse and, later, Adele helped shaped my style. Their honesty and raw approach to music helped me discover my own sound.

tT: Local vs international?Thato: The plan is world domination but I would obviously like to become a household name in South Africa first. I believe that my music has universal appeal because of its sound and message.

tT: Who are the current artists featured in your playlists?Thato: Tori Kelly, Sam Smith - whom I saw live in Amsterdam, Beatenberg, AKA, Jhene Aiko, James Blake, HAIM, Sia and Rhodes.

tT: Friday was Nelson Mandela Day. What role do you think musicians have to play in the preservation of our country’s heritage?Thato: I think as far as possible we should strive to promote unity and oneness through song and find creative and innovative ways of promoting South Africa and the continent as a whole. I think our musicians would take the world by storm if we collaborated more and promoted ourselves more instead of importing entertainment.

tT: Where can we find information about your upcoming performances? Thato: Twitter: @Thato_Burhali

Primrose police arrested a 25-year-old suspect for attempted theft of a cable after a security guard who was patrolling in the area spotted the suspect digging up the cable, and informed the police, who responded quickly to apprehend him. The Primrose Police would like to thank the security guard who made the arrest possible. The suspect is detained at Primrose SAPS pending his appearance at the Germiston Court.

Last Wednesday morning in Elandsfontein Bedfordview police officers stopped a white Ford Ranger with two occupants. The officers were on duty when they noticed the vehicle in Alamain Road and decided to stop and search it. Inside the car they found Eskom, Telkom and Transnet cables, but the suspects were unable to give a convincing explanation of why they were in their possession. The officers then contacted Telkom, Eskom and Transnet experts who confirmed that the cables were stolen, and worth R80 000.The two men were arrested and will appear in Edenvale Court on charges of possession of presumably stolen property.

A Bedfordview police officer who was patrolling near a chain store on Friday 11 July received the report of a man who had tried to open a cellphone contract with a fraudulent ID book. The suspect apparently went to the cellphone department of the store and asked to upgrade his cellphone contract. The store assistant asked the man for his ID book, and, while checking it, became suspicious and called the number that appeared on her records - only to find that the owner of the ID book was in Durban. The 38-year-old man was arrested and has already appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court facing charges of fraud. The case was postponed to a later date, pending further investigations.

The much awaited LPL auction evening took place recently on the 50th floor of Carlton Centre, the tallest building in Johannesburg and Africa. The evening was hosted by Jateen Nana and kicked off with the introduction of the LPL’s Board of Governance which includes Yusuf Dinath, Ali Osmany and Clive Eksteen. A number of big-name players from all around the province went under the hammer during the 5th edition of the LPL Auction evening. Each of the six franchises was allowed to retain six players in a retention phase, after which the 30-minute transfer window was entered into, and then the much anticipated auction. With the LPL being a 20 -over format, it is assumed that it must be a batsman’s game, hence all eyes were on the big hitters of the game, players who have the ability to change the shape of a match in an instant. The teams seemed to be well prepared and took calculated risks as the five franchises began their plot to dethrone the current champions, the Bank All Stars. Teams had a budget of R2 million each in which they attempted to outwit each other and acquire a squad of 20 players which would include two u/19 players.

BANk ALL STArSThe All Stars were well prepared, knew exactly what they wanted and broke the bank with a record purchase for the young 17-year-old star Delano Potgieter. The All Stars spent R1,395 million for the Alberton youngster’s signature.

CrESCENT HAwkSThis may be the year that fans will finally see the awakening of the LPL’s sleeping giant, as the Crescent Hawks assembled a very powerful squad. Under the new ownership of Solly Mangera, Aslam Wadee and Iqbal Dindar did everything in their power to gain the services of Highveld Lions stars Shaylan

Pillay and Goolam Bodi.

SPOrTiNG SuPErmENWith new owners at the helm, Juan LeMaitre and Ryan Colyn have built a hugely impressive squad around the likes of Hardus Viljoen, Imraan Manack, Stef Le Roux, Devan Conway, Yusuf Jajbhay, David Rhoda and Dwayne Pretorius. With such an abundance of talent at their disposal, this is undoubtedly the strongest the Supermen have ever been.

CAvALiEr CATSWith a pace attack second to none, the Cavalier Cats will look to destroy all before them with their speed. Their attack boasts former South African fast bowlers Garnett Kruger and Monde Zondeki. In the batting department, they have Khalid Mutusamy and the young u/19 prodigy Siddique Mohamed.

SHAkTi TiGErSD.K. Daya and the SA u/19 head coach Lawrence Mahatlane will continue with their policy of nurturing young players, as they will look to Ziyaad Asvat, Malcom Nofal, Stevelen Jacobs, Sushil Parboo and Lazarus Mokoena to match the efforts of their spectacular first season. The LPL’s player of the year for 2013, Justin Loyd, has been asked to lead the Tigers for the first time.

TASmANiAN DEviLSSA u/19 player Marcus Ackerman and u/19 World Cup Champion Yaseen Valley will be looking to make their mark. The Devils attack will be spear-headed by Yadene Singh and Matt Arnold with their under- study Dewaal Patel following suit. South African A players Dominique Hendriks and Mangaliso Moshehle make this Devils team a well- balanced unit. New owners Neil Levinson and Anton Durant will be looking to make the Devils a powerful force in the LPL. For a full squad list visit www.lenasiapremierleague.com.

Early preparation pays off

South Africa’s Luca Filippi claimed a top 12 finish at the Junior Open Championship to top the African leaderboard at the prestigious biennial championship, presented by the royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (r&A).The 15-year-old Milnerton golfer carded rounds of 74, 78 and 78 at the West Lancashire Golf Club to tie for 12th with four players on 14-over-par 230.Filippi opened with a bogey, but erased a second drop at the fifth with a birdie at the par-three sixth. He turned in two over after a

third bogey at the ninth. His run of pars on the back nine was rudely interrupted by an eight at the par-four 13th.Without the expensive mistake, Filippi would have tied for sixth.Filippi was the top African performer among the seven players of the 21-strong African contingent who made the cut. The South African finished five shots ahead of Anita Uwadia in the final round. Regrettably, the zone trophies were based on net scores after 36 holes and the Nigerian golfer pipped Filippi for the African Trophy.

Record field for 2014 XCO

The 2014 South African Mountain Biking Cross-Country (XCO) and Downhill Championships were held at Thaba Trails this past weekend with a record field of entries: 233 for XCO and 31 for downhill (based on online entries. )Even talk on the ground between competitors was that they had never seen so many people compete and so many spectators. The XCO took place on Saturday and the Downhill on Sunday. Rourke Croeser (Kargo Pro MTB Team) claimed the 2014 South African Cross-country National Championship Elite men’s title in a time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 29 seconds. Second place went to Matthys Beukes 01:36:57 and third place James Reid 01:38:06. The Elite men completed 6 laps of the 4.5km dusty and rocky track.Croeser said this was his greatest achievement to date, “I’ve won every title since racing in the Sprog category, but being the Elite champ is being the champion of the country. I can wear this jersey on my shoulders with great pride. This is the greatest achievement to win.”Mariske Strauss (Orange Monkey Pro Team) was also smiling ear to ear when she put in a dominant performance to claim the 2014 South African Cross-country National Championship Elite women’s title in a time

of 1 hour 35 minutes and 35 seconds. She achieved this even after taking a tumble in the rock garden. The Elite women completed 5 laps. Strauss felt that racing in this event was a nice opener for her for the Commonwealth Games. Cherie Vale (Paarl Media) claimed the silver medal in a time of 01:39:10, while Candice Neethling (Time Freight VELOlife) claimed bronze in 01:40:40. The Downhill Championships was also highly contested but defending Champion, Tiaan Odendaal, took his third consecutive Elite men’s title with a time of 1 minute: 57 seconds.More talk on the ground showed that many riders welcomed the champions at Thaba Trails rather than Pietermaritzburg Cascades MTB park, saying that different riders should be given a chance to win rather than the local boys who practise at their home grounds at Cascades; but, on the other hand, some riders felt Thaba Trails was too dusty.Nevertheless Thaba Trails did an excellent job and Cycling South Africa extends a big thanks of thank you to Wendell Bole and his entire team at Thaba Trails, for preparing the superb and challenging course and for hosting the event. tame TIMES would like to commend Bole and the Thaba Trails team for bringing such a big event to the South and showcasing what we have to offer.

TOP THREE ELITE: Matthys Beukes (2nd) Rourke Croeser (1st), James Reid (3rd)

ELATED ELITE WOMAN: Mariske Strauss just as she crossed the finish line.
