TWELVE THOUSAND STAND WITH ISRAEL
On Sunday 3 August, twelve thousand South Africans gathered at a Solidarity Peace Rally for Israel at Huddle Park in Linksfield. Among their number were Jewish residents of Johannesburg, Christians from various denominations and a few hundred members of the Shembe Church.The massive crowd was addressed by Jewish and Christian leaders, who defended Israel’s right to exist and to defend her people. The emphasis of the gathering was on peace, and prayers were made for peace and the Israeli soldiers.Chief Rabbi of South Africa Warren Goldstein said his prayer was for a long-term peace that came with security for all the people of the region. He said that Israel had responded with “unprecedented restraint” to a “terrorist state led by Hamas which is at war with the only democratic state in the Middle East.”

Following tame TIMES’s article on the Bikers4Orcas organisation and their annual awareness ride/gathering on Saturday 14 June, we undertook to watch the movie Black Fish with the intention of publishing a review of it and better explaining the reason why the international bikers group was formed.Black fish is a documentary-type movie which focuses on exposing the conditions which orcas (Killer Whales) live in when kept captive in marine parks. The film documents the stress which the animals go through during their capture (the young ones are often removed from their families), their training and their living conditions in dark tanks when they are not involved in performances. The film, which is told through the experiences of former trainers, focuses on one specific case: the case involving an orca named Tilikum and the tragic death of Dawn Brancheau.Brancheau was attacked by Tilikum during a show at Seaworld in Canada in 2010. The trainers, some former colleagues of Brancheau, give insight into the darker side of what these animals have to endure in order for the visitors of marine parks to be entertained. During the film, an incident of frustrated orcas violently turning on each other is shown and, as a result, most of the ex-trainers agree that orcas belong in the wild and that incidents such as the one which befell Brancheau were likely continue to repeat themselves as long the animals were kept in captivity.
While researching if the frequency of cases of cruelty towards orcas had decreased since the 2012 release of the documentary, we came across an article by Elizabeth Batt (DigitalJournal.com). In her article Batt alleges that an orca (Kiska) kept in captivity at Marineland (Canada) was showing signs of illness. Kiska, who was captured in 1977, has allegedly not seen another orca since 2011.Bikers4Orcas International continues to advocate for the release of younger orcas into the wild and the rehabilitation of the older ones such as Kiska. Speaking through the South African group leader (referred to as a pod leader) Lia Lopes, Bikers4Orcas said that they wanted to put an end to marine captivity through education and by sensitising the public to the continual abuse of these majestic creatures.

The South African Dog Training College & Kennels (SADTC) will host a golf day at the Germiston Golf Club on Friday 3 October. SADTC specialises in home obedience training, pet-assisted therapy training and other aspects of dog-related training, including the training of handlers/owners. The main objective of the golf day is to raise funds to subsidise the training costs for dog-assisted therapy for the elderly, sick children, victims of abuse and adults with special needs.Pet-assisted therapy training involves the training of the dog together with the handler/owner so that the dog can learn to address the specifi c needs of the patient and so that the patient can learn how to request assistance from the therapy dog. The SADTC aims to provide affordable rates in order to encourage dog owners to keep and enjoy their dogs rather than dumping them after a few months - a behaviour which results in the overcrowding of animal shelters.SADTC invites golfers, businesses, and any other member of the community to support them in their endeavour, whether by entering to participate in the golf day, sponsoring a hole, using promotional material to advertise at the golf course or by donating prizes. In return for the patronage, the SADTC will acknowledge the support in their monthly newsletter and companies will be granted the opportunity to put up branded boards on the training academy’s fence.

Leader of Defend Embrace Invest Support Israel (DEISI) Olga Meshoe, took a selfie with her back to the crowd and encouraged Jewish people present to remember the “thousands of non-Jews in solidarity with Jews in South Africa.” She urged rally-goers to buy Israeli produce to support the country and reminded everyone not to “become bitter.”President of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies Zev Krengel said that there had been efforts to intimidate the organizers out of holding the rally and to prevent some from attending it, but thanked President Zuma for continuing to “engage” with Israel.Israeli ambassador Arthur Lenk said Israel was home to Jews, Christians and Muslims. The country, he said, wanted to rebuild Gaza after the war and demilitarize her for the sake of her people. A letter from well-known evangelist Angus Buchan was read, saying that the “Bible tells us very clearly that we are to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Anyone,” he
wrote, “who touches Israel touches the apple of God’s eye.”Gauteng Shembe Church leader Inkosi Phakama Shembe told the crowd: “I love you, South African Jews.” Pro-Israel pastor Abel Zumani compared the state of Israel to an olive-tree, saying that both were disease-resistant, drought-resistant and fire-resistant. ACDP President Rev Kenneth Meshoe said he was relieved that none of the speakers had released hatred. Both Christians and Jews, he said, believe in peace and the Bible taught believers to love their enemies. He said the ACDP had for years supported the right of Israel to exist within safe and secure borders. The international community, he said, should help Israel to destroy the tunnels being dug under her borders in order to smuggle weapons into the country. After the rally, the SAPS reported on Twitter that they had arrested a “Palestinian national” for possession of an unlicensed rifle. He was also carrying a revolver, shotgun and three knives.

Taking part in the Fire Challenge dare game that has gone viral on social media is not fun, but extremely stupid and very painful, say ER24 paramedics. Participants in this dangerous game, they say, voluntarily set themselves alight by applying flammable liquids such as rubbing alcohol on to their bodies and filming the outcome. ER24 has issued the following statement on the so-called game: “As far as we can determine, one of the first Fire-Challenge videos was uploaded in April 2012 on to YouTube in which the user set his chest hair alight. Since its upload the video has had more than one hundred thousand views. It appears that in April 2013 a Vine user introduced the hash tag fire-challenge and it accompanied videos of users setting themselves alight. The challenge is to set yourself alight and extinguish the flames as fast as you can; however it rarely has a desirable outcome. We have watched almost a hundred videos on the Internet on this so-called fire-challenge and none of them was without injury, pain or even death.In Buffalo, New York a fifteen-year-old boy died after participating in the fire-challenge game. It was reported in an online newspaper on 4 July this year that he doused
himself with alcohol and was then set ablaze by his friends. Apparently he was not near any water source and could not stop the fire quickly enough and sustained serious burn wounds as a result. Even getting into water quickly can still leave serious burn wounds and inhalation burns can lead to suffocation. People often post challenges on various social media sites, which other users take up, some of them unfortunately ending up dead. Challenges like the neknomination which involved downing alcohol beverages and so forth, also had their fair share of victims. These challenges do not only affect children, but adults as well. However, children are more susceptible to these challenges, as they are keen to outdo their friends. The choking game is still popular under many teens, although not always identified in time, or correctly. Teens strangled each other to the point where they passed out or felt high. Some went as far as tying a belt or a rope around their necks and hanging themselves from a door handle or bedpost. Many died because of this so-called game.”

The holder of “Best Airshow” 2013 is set to deliver a repeat performance this year on 17th August. No airshow is complete without the aerobatic performances emanating from Rand Airport. The teams consist of Harvards, Pits Specials, Dakotas, Skymaster, Trojans and the highlight of the day, a very rare P51 Mustang owned by Menno Parsons - all flown by highly skilled pilots doing what they do best – effortlessly executing those manoeuvres that take our breath away. The Silver Falcons will once more thrill the crowds with their daring displays.Brian Emmenis will once again keep spectators involved and informed by providing various facts and technical specifications of the aircraft and the experience of the pilots behind the controls. The list of pilots reads like the who’s who in aviation with the likes of Arnie Meneghelli, Scully Levin, Dennis Spence, Larry Beamish, Flippie Vermeulen and Pierre Gouws. A crop of young aviators are following in their fathers’ footsteps with Sally and Ellis Levin and Jason Beamish being part of the aerobatic teams and performing with the best of the best. Pilot-friendly Rand Airport has become home to some key aspects of General Aviation, such as Global Aviation Consultants, which have been an integral part of Rand Airport and

there for the last fifteen years, as well as the Aero Club and
RAASA which have their offices at Rand Airport. The airport boasts a
number of flying schools, air charter operators
and a number of aircraft maintenance organisations, pilot shops, car hire and other enterprises, as well as the largest collection of historic and aerobatic planes in the country. At present the airport handles a not inconsiderable 73 000 movements a year, up from 66 000 two years ago. This makes it the sixth busiest airport in South Africa. Reflecting the strength and viability of the airport there is massive investment, particularly in the central driveway loop and at the threshold to Runway 29. Eight new large hangars have been built off the new taxiway and more can still be built. Some recent huge developments are an indication that business is increasing and that there is huge confidence in the sustainability and future of the airport.

Clive Maistry decided to keep things local for the latest of the Mr South Africa 2014 assignments which required the finalists to present leadership talks at schools. The purpose of the talks was to motivate learners, most of whom have recently returned to school after the mid-year school holidays.
Maistry arrived at the school early on Friday 1 August,
in time to catch the
senior primary learners during their morning assembly. Maistry’s talk was mostly anchored on leadership as it was acted out by South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela, and the Mr SA finalist prompted learners to be active about pushing themselves further in order to secure success.Maistry also took the opportunity to introduce learners to some of his experiences in the pageant and to pose for some photographs with the newly selected student leaders.

Unplanned pregnancy is one of the challenges facing South Africa. According to WHO, 50% of unintended pregnancies are among women who were not using birth control at the time they became pregnant.
Strategies for prevention of the above
include the following:
- Educating and empowering women about birth control- Helping men and women at risk of unintended pregnancies choose appropriate contraception - Correct use and consistency of the chosen method - Promoting the use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).
LARC are methods that require administration
less than once per month/cycle. They do not require ongoing effort on the part of the user for long, effective use and rapid return to fertility after discontinuation.

Nausea, headaches and dizziness will resolve spontaneously in three months. If not, take pills with food or switch to another method.Breakthrough bleeding can be annoying because it is often unpredictable and prolonged. It is common with progestin only methods (Depo Provera, Nur-isterate, Implanon® and mini pills). They cause thinning of the lining of the uterus and it sometimes sloughs off. Ibuprofen or a little bit of oestrogen hormone can improve this condition.Reduced Libido: switch to an androgen based (testosterone-like) method.
Mood swingsStudies have shown that this is due to lack of pyridoxine in the body. Pyridoxine tablets may relieve these symptoms. Women with persistence of these side effects despite treatment must switch to a non-hormonal method.Weight gain and breast tenderness: because of fluid retention, usually improves after a few months. Drosperinone-containing methods can prevent this side effect.Vaginal thrush is more common with methods containing high doses of oestrogen.

The second round of the 2014 Sasol Women’s League has seen JVW FC signing on a new player. Playing for FC Rossiyanka for the past 4 years, appearing in UEFA competitions as well as being one of the three highest capped players in the Senior Banyana Banyana National Team, Nompumelelo Nyandeni is sure to bring with her many positive attributes which will assist the team in competing for a place among the top contenders. Nyandeni, who was the top goal-scorer at her previous club in Russia, has many a c h i e v e m e n t s to her name, i n c l u d i n g 2009 SAFA player of the year, nominee for CAF player of the year 2011 and appearing at the London Olympics with Banyana Banyana. Nompumelelo Nyandeni will now be enjoying her football career as she plays in her home country in the Women’s SASOL League, as well as continuing
to prepare for the African Women’s Championship which will be held in October. JVW founder and Banyana Banyana skipper Janine Van Wyk is overwhelmed by the new signing and is confident in her team’s future. “The signing of Mpumi has got the whole team excited as she can offer more experience to the team and our players can definitely learn a lot from her. After five rounds in the Hexagon, Adam “The Prodigy” Speechly was announced the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Welterweight Champion by unanimous decision, reclaiming the title and upsetting Henry “ Herculeez” Fadipe.The main bout had spectators glued to their seats, with Speechly, the first ever Welterweight champion, pinning the 22-year-old Nigerian born athlete to the ground for most of the fight while displaying his grappling skills. Even though Fadipe was the bookies’ favourite, the crowd at Carnival City welcomed Speechly’s win with great excitement.
