On Friday 18 July South Africans and the world together celebrated International Nelson Mandela Day, the day on which communities celebrate Madiba's birth-day by dedicating 67 minutes towards a good cause. East Rand residents heeded

the call, joined hands and made a special dif-ference in the lives of the less fortunate. “Ed-ucation is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said for-mer president Nelson Mandela. In line with his vision, many of the outreach initiatives

on Mandela Day revolved around uplifting the community through education: St Dom-inic’s School for Girls in Boksburg partnered with Denel Aviation to do a library project at OR Tambo Primary School in Tembisa. Continues on page 2

The library project initially started as a media project driven by the grade 7 St Dominic’s me-dia leaders on 27 May. It quickly gained mo-mentum and has been incorporated into Man-dela Day. St Dominic’s learners all collected books to donate to the OR Tambo Primary School library, which was initially only a small bookcase. Denel Aviation came on board and sponsored and built the library. St Dominic’s’

School Principal, Mr Roger Loring, also at-tended the event and was thrilled to see the project take off. Mr Motlhabane, OR Tambo Primary’s Principal, said: “We are so excited. This library is so important because it will sup-ply the curriculum we need to implement at school. It will improve reading and communi-cation skills and assist the learners to acquire knowledge. In our community, which is an informal settlement, the people hardly have Internet. This media centre will assist them

to communicate with others.” After the library was formally unveiled, a 67 minute clean-up was done.

Shoprite Checkers celebrat-ed Mandela Day in Reiger Park on 18 July by under-taking a number of projects at the Reiger Park Commu-nity Crisis Centre for abused women and children.

In partnership with Stark Ayres, they donated garden seedlings and equipment and established a sustainable vegetable gar-den. They also brought bakery utensils and stationery; and volunteers assisted with reno-vations and general mainte-nance in and around the centre.

Centre Manager Elaine Appies was very excited about the up-grades, especially the re-open-ing of the bakery area and food garden, as well as the mentor-ing programmes that will teach the community baking and gar-dening skills. “It is no use to keep on feeding people,” she said. “You must give them ac-cess to the pond where you are fishing. They must learn to be self-sufficient.” The day ended with a home-cooked meal and cake for women, children and the elderly from the Reiger Park community.

Earlier this year an initiative called 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day was launched. Ac-tress Carolyn Steyn pioneered this international project, en-

couraging knitting and crochet enthusiasts from around the world to stitch blankets for Nel-son Mandela Day. On 18 July Carolyn and her team, which included blanket-crafters from Ekurhuleni, handed out the blankets at the Noordgesig Pri-mary School in Soweto. The chil-dren were delighted when Carolyn wrapped each one of them in a col-ourful and intricately made blanket, specially hand-knitted or crocheted by someone just for them. Each blanket symbolised love and care; every stitch took time and energy to make. “We are not yet finished,” said Carolyn after the blankets were handed out. “We want to make every day a Mandela Day. I am absolutely thrilled and emotional. We want to remember the forgotten people and look after them.” Priscilla Pail-man, a teacher at Noordgesig Pri-mary, also expressed her gratitude for the blankets. “I’m speechless,” she said. “Most of the parents here cannot afford blankets or they are unemployed. They will appreciate it so much.”

“ Mandela Day to me means mainly to honour a man that has done so much. We are here today because he sacrificed 67 years. Projects like these are important because they cater for the poorest of the poor.” - Gauteng Department of Agri-culture and Rural Development official: Mary-Ann Ngeleza.

On 18 July local communities were hard at work doing various 67 Minutes for Mandela projects.I attended a few of these events, some of which were held in Reiger Park, Soweto and Tembisa. Many of the resi-dents living in these communities are in dire need of basic primary needs. Food, housing and transport are re-garded as luxuries there. Blankets, food, renovations and library books for children are just a few examples of the gifts that were received on the day. What stood out for me was the strong sense of camaraderie and fellowship among many of the people I visited. Whether they were local recipients or mere strangers offering a helping hand, everyone shared one [email protected]

tame TIMES spent their 67 minutes begging for donations at street corners early on Friday morning. R6650 was collected and many of tame TIMES clients donated cash and items as well; Wimpy Brackengardens, Springbok Pharmacy, Pick n Pay Mulbarton, Macy’s Spar, CB Auto Glass and Poowee. tame TIMES bought cleaning products, adult nappies and other items and donated them to Hamlet School in Regents Park.

I like to think that I eat quite healthily. You know how it is, one tries to avoid pro-cessed food, eat low-fat this and that, and not too much sugar. This usually works quite well for me except for that bugbear of women everywhere - an occasional craving for chocolate.

I try to see that my family eats properly too, though I have a bit of difficulty there. My son is a pizza fanatic and my daughter had a boss who often bought take-aways for the staff during the day. However, at home I ply the vegetables and fruit, the herbal tea and the white meat in the hope that I can counter-act some of the junk. We are very fortunate to have so many different types of season-al fruit and vegetables in this country, and, if one shops in the right places, they are still cheap. My children, like most young people, profess to dislike vegetables but they still manage to find a few they like. In England I was brought up on a vegie diet of onions, peas, carrots and cabbage, with brussels sprouts at Christmas time, though my English grandfather and father-in-law had allotments so they grew many of their own vegetables. (An allotment is a patch of ground owned by the local council that could be rented by peo-ple because their gardens are too small for growing anything much.) This meant that vis-

its to their houses provided a little more in the way of variety. Much of the fruit in England is imported, and priced accordingly. Unfortu-nately for us, much of our best fruit here is exported, probably to England, but as long as one eats it fairly quickly after buying it and before it goes off, we still have plenty of va-riety here. In my youth I ate plenty of apples, we had imported bananas and oranges and sometimes grapes; but I had never bought a peach without a tin around it, a nectarine, fresh pineapple, avocado, or apricot until I came here. And such things as mangoes and water-melons were only pictures in books. Al-though meat prices have soared in the past few years and we now eat more chicken and mince than we used to, meat is still much cheaper here than in England. In the 1970s my husband and some friends clubbed to-gether and made a spit braai, with which we entertained overseas visitors, cooking pigs and hind-quarters, but those days are gone.

The DA will submit questions to the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha, and the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, to determine the full extent of the NPA’s assignment of two prosecutors to investigate whether the conduct of some motorists constitutes an offence. They will specifically inquire into whether SANRAL unilaterally requested this involvement. “The DA is concerned by this latest development, specifically given the changing context of the e-tolling debate. Just last week, Gauteng Premier David Makhura, announced a so-called ‘review’ of the e-tolling project,” Manny de Freitas MP, Shadow Minister of Transport said. The DA has made it clear that it will seek to amend the national legislation in Parliament. This development is important in light of the ANC’s rethinking of the controversial project. “Surely it would have made better sense to only make such an assignment after the supposed review was complete, and all parliamentary processes initiated by the DA were finalised?” De Freitas asked.

The Boksburg Athletic Club has been asked to host the Central Gauteng Cross Country Champs on Saturday 16 August 2014, and the club needs volunteers from the club for the following duties:1.Spiking and taping the course on Friday afternoon and checking the course early on Saturday morning2.Moving Coke, cups, baths and water sa-chets from the storeroom to the water points on the course and at the finish area 3.Marshalling along the course4.Water points (tables) along the route5. Coke point at the finish6.Tidying, packing away and cleaning up after the event As many people as possible are needed to help ensure the smooth running of this event. It is a long day – the first race starts at 09:00 and the last one starts at 16:30, so a shift roster will probably be drawn up. The club is appealing especially to the parents of the Junior Cross Country runners to help, as they will be attending the event anyway.

Online security part 2By Rob Cape: IT consultant and blogger (www.10dot0.com).

Welcome to the second week of our three-week series on cyber security. This week we will cover issues relating to cellphones.

When cellphones made their entrance in the 1990s, they did exactly what they said on the box, they were mobile telephones, simple devices; but, fast forward fourteen years, and we are walking around with more processing power in our pockets than NASA had to send a man to the moon (or not, for the conspiracy theorists among us).The list of applications and what our phones can do nowadays is endless, but again there is a price to pay for this convenience and a few unscrupulous people are all too willing to exploit this technology. Luckily we seem to have learned from our personal comput-ers, and people are more savvy with their phones, but we still need to be aware of scams, hacks and exploits. When people ask me about mobile security the first thing I tell them is “Switch off your Bluetooth and WIFI.” With the burgeoning “café culture” in South Africa, many people are meeting and conducting business in open spaces, mak-

ing it a rich environment for “Bluesnarfing” or “Bluejacking.” A common hack for a few years has been jumping on unsuspecting mobile phones via Bluetooth and making overseas calls to a premium rate number, with the result that you get stuck with a massive bill and the hackers get paid. An-other hack making a resurgence is the “fake SMS,” an unsolicited SMS from a “friend” saying they are stuck and need money, a surprisingly simple yet effective ploy that again preys on the good nature of people. The next two hacks we will explore would not look out of place in a Hollywood block-buster. This one is for iPhone users: did you know your iPhone’s accelerometer can decipher exactly what you are typing on your computer’s keyboard? This only works when the phone is placed next to the key-board, as the vibrations from the keyboard

can be picked up and translated by a pro-gramme with as much as 80% accuracy, which is extremely scary. But let us not for-get our Android users, who are vulnerable to PlaceRaider - malware developed by the US Naval Surface Warfare Centre. This sits in a free-to-download camera app and as you go about your day, it takes pictures of your environment, GPS location and mails it off to a predetermined email address. My simplest advice in this regard is the fol-lowing: turn your Bluetooth off and accept connections only from known users, keep your WIFI off and never connect to “free/open” wireless access points. Again, just be a bit more aware of what you click on, and where, and you should be good to go. Next week we will cover some banking and ATM scams, happy surfing till then.

Early child development is a complex process, with many lessons learnt at this fundamental phase having far-reaching effects, including a child’s aptitude for certain subjects. One of the most important skills that will have a significant impact on an individual’s life is mathematics – the ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide. Depending on the profession one pursues in life, mathematical skills are vital in problem-solving, which is why the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), through Engenius, is encouraging an appreciation of maths in the nation in order to prepare more citizens for a career in engineering. Engenius has gathered some pointers for parents who want to develop a love for maths in their children from an early age. Sandisa Maqubela, who facilitates Engenius, recommends a few simple, yet effective ,activities that parents can do to increase their children’s love and understanding of maths, to reinforce the skills learnt in school.

LooSE changEMost families have a jar or a container in which they collect loose change. Over time, this container can become quite full and a task you can get your children to do is to count the money in the jar. This will give them a practical lesson in addition, and it will increase their understanding of money and denominations. They may also be allowed to buy a treat with some of the money.

PaTTErnS arE IMPorTanTPatterns are a great way of learning, and they are all around us, in art, furnishings and even paving. You can also increase your child’s interest in patterns through activities such as jigsaw puzzles, dominoes and tanagrams. When you are in the mall, you can count the different coloured tiles as you walk between aisles.

a faMILy ThaT PLayS TogEThEr STayS TogEThErFamily games such as snakes and ladders, Uno, and Connect 4 can help children

learn valuable skills in a fun and enjoyable way. These games help develop children’s counting skills, as well as addition, subtraction and division. As the children get older, as a means of developing strategic thinking skills, parents can introduce Monopoly, backgammon, chess and even Jenga. These can be competitive, so be prepared for some sibling squabbles.

BuILdIng BLockSFrom a very early age, children like to stack things on top of each other. Let your child play with mathematical shapes such as blocks, Lego and even Meccano. These are very helpful as they provide the child with a concrete perception of shapes and space at an early age.

rEad ThEM BookS ThaT IncorPoraTE MaThSMake the kids connect with maths even in story-time. Read them books in which the main characters solve a problem using maths, such as One Hundred Angry Ants by Ellinor J. Pinczes, The King’s Commissioners by Aileen Friedman and Socrates and the Three Little Pigs by Tuyosi Mori. You will be increasing their aptitude in maths subliminally, especially if they struggle with it.

Show ThEM ThaT MaThS IS EvErywhErEIncorporate maths into their everyday experience; show them symmetrical shapes in nature, pricing in supermarkets, and geometry in buildings. Make up games linked to vehicle registration numbers on long trips. Count the number of certain models of cars on the way home from school. Teach them about time while baking – they can count the minutes while their cupcakes bake. Make simple tasks like boiling eggs fun, by letting them set the egg-timer. “As parents balance their cheque-books, buy shoes, measure distances and check their time, they should include their children in these activities, to get them excited about maths,” concludes Sandisa.

When tame TIMES staff and Hope in Je-sus Ministries members pulled up to the park in Glenesk on Saturday, long lines of both children and adults had already formed in anticipation of their visit. While the organisers of the event set up tables and the soup-pot, warm hugs and friendly greetings were exchanged; then everyone joined hands to make a large circle, and prayed before the meal was served.A cup of hot soup, bread, fruit, biscuits and packets of chips were given to each mem-ber of the Glenesk community. This was all made possible by the support of tame TIMES readers, as tame TIMES had been calling on the community for a month for donations of soup mix, bread, blankets, old clothes, shoes and cash. We are very grateful to our readers, who stood together and made it possible for tame TIMES to col-lect two bakkie-loads of goods with which to bless two communities: Glenesk and South Hills.tame TIMES would also like to commend Hope in Jesus Ministries for doing the work of God and being obedient to His command to help the poor. Members of this church feed the less fortunate every day, and do it with the love of Jesus, wanting not only to fill empty stomachs but also to fill hearts with the Good News and make fishers of men. This outreach could not have hap-pened without the help of Hope in Jesus Ministries, which allowed tame TIMES to partner with them on their feeding scheme outreach in these areas.Special guests at the event, who made the day an especially memorable one, were Johan Herbst, a 2014 Mr SA finalist, and the JOY dogs and their owner, Sue Green. Although the Glenesk children were rather apprehensive of the dogs at first, by the end

of the morning a number of brave boys and one little girl had plucked up the courage to touch them, and showered the animals with love. tame TIMES staff were humbled to hear parents thank them for helping them to feed their children and to see the smiles on the little ones’ faces as they received such previously unheard-of luxuries as biscuits; but there were also some heart-breaking moments. One barefoot little boy came run-ning up to the box of clothing to ask for a pair of socks and a young girl came to us to plead for a scarf.

Lisa Katzke, tame TIMES PRO officer would like to thank everyone who con-tributed in the form of food, clothing or cash donations, as well as those who gave their time. You made it possible to bless those who are less fortunate.See more photos on our facebook page.

Two women, believed to be in their late twenties, were killed on the evening of Friday 11 June on the N12 East near the Atlas Road off-ramp.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, they found the two women lying on the highway with multiple fatal injuries. It is understood that an 18-wheeler truck collided with them when they tried to cross the highway. There was nothing that paramedics could do for the women and they were both declared dead on the scene before the case was handed over to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department for further investigation.

The Methodist Church in Witfield has tak-en it upon themselves to put together gift packs for victims of crime. They recently handed them over to Sergeant Madumet-sa Matwetja for the Victim Empowerment Centre at Boksburg North SAPS.

These packs will be given to women who have been raped; they contain toiletries, note-book and pen, underwear, sanitary pads and sweets for children. The church ladies are: Jean Langlois, Marlene Pinn, Phyllis Rud-man, Karen Van Niekerk and Irene Campbell.

The Boksburg SAPS spokesman said, “These gifts will be very much appreciated by these victims. We can now provide these important items to the people who need them.”

For the first time in the history of the Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards® (CCA), South Africa’s comedy-loving community will know ahead of the show who will be performing on the night. Not

only will six awards be handed out to SA’s top comedians, but there will also be comedy to remember. Prepare to be hit by a whirlwind of delight, surprise, hysterics and that kind of squirm-in-your-seat discomfort that only perfectly timed sharp comebacks can deliver.

Now in its fourth year, this year’s variety show is themed The Point of Funny and promises to deliver the most laughs yet. Each skit will be delivered by the talented and somewhat eclectic cast that includes well-known names like: Jack Parow, Rhys Woods, Nik Rabinowitz, Robby Collins, Chris Steenkamp, Pule, Debora Patta, Gilé Motshwane, Loyiso Gola, KG, Deep Fried Man, Tats Nkonzo, Bevan Cullinan and Riaad Moosa.

Barry Hilton, Khanyi Mbau and Darrel Bristow-Bovey are some of the presenters, with three more high-profile names to be announced soon. The event format is simple and will specifically exclude any dull or boring speeches. There are only six recipients of awards, so, between the side-splitting sketches performed by the cast members above, the coveted Waldo statuettes will be presented to the lucky nominees who receive the most votes. Each recipient will do seven minutes of stand-up as their thank

you speech, so the audience can expect an entertaining evening of off-the-cuff comedy and perfectly rehearsed theatre. “As we believe the CCAs should shine a light into the future of comedy in SA, we push to find new ways to use The Teatro at Montecasino through technology and execution. Last year, we pushed the physical boundaries of the building, and augmented reality with graphics – this year, we are focused on the funniest possible night we can, with a few bells and whistles chucked in for fun,” say co-directors, Dani Hynes and John Vlismas. The Savanna CCA ceremony will take place at The Teatro at Montecasino on 2 August. Limited tickets are available to public, so book now through Computicket. The nominees, in case you missed them, are: The Savanna Newcomer Award: Alfred Adriaan, Loyiso Madinga, Yaaseen Barnes, Glen Biderman-Pam, Bradford KeenThe Breakthrough Act Award: Donovan Goliath, Jason Goliath, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Deep Fried Man, Kagiso KG MokgadiThe Comic’s Choice Comic Of The Year Award: Tumi Morake, Chester Missing, Loyiso Lungile Gola, Trevor Noah, Riaad MoosaThe Times Comic’s Pen Award: David Kibuuka, Chester Missing, Loyiso Lungile Gola, Kagiso Lediga, Christopher SteenkampThe Savanna Audience Choice Award: This is the only category that is open to public vote, so voting stays open until 28 July. Singer-songwriter James Blunt will be performing his Moon Landing concerts at the Carnival City Big Top Arena on 14 and 15 February next year. Big Concerts and Carnival City are urging eager Blunt fans to book their tickets quickly to avoid missing the mega-star’s live performance.

James Blunt originally captured the hearts of hopeless romantics the world over with his debut album Back to Bedlam. Two of his most popular songs come from this album: You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover. The album sold over 11 million copies worldwide, topping the UK Albums Chart and peaking at

number two in the US. Moon Landing is Blunt’s fourth album and a follow-up on his 2010 Some Kind of Trouble. His first new album in three years, it can be described as raw, direct and emotionally honest. The album features production from the likes of Steve Mac, Guy Chambers and Steve Robson and was executively produced by Tom Rothrock, who worked with Blunt on the 2005 Back to Bedlam. His latest singles, Bonfire Heart and Postcards, are climbing the international and local charts, proving to be another two big hits. Fans will be treated to songs from this album and Blunt’s earlier albums in an intimate setting. Tickets to the two Gauteng shows went on sale on Tuesday 8 July. According to Carnival City’s Entertainment Manager, Jaco Saayman, tickets are selling like hot cakes and he urges Blunt fans to secure their seats soon. Tickets are available via www.bigconcerts.com and vary in price from R395 to R735. The shows at the Big Top Arena are two of only three shows Blunt will do while in South Africa. The first show takes place at Grand West’s Grand Arena on 12 February 2015. Blunt’s Moon Landing tour in South Africa is presented by KFM and M-Net. On 12 and 13 July Emperors Palace hosted the first East Rand Wedding Show, a bridal feast which ensured that couples came into contact with all the right people to help them plan their special day. The show covered everything from fashion shows and designer dresses to photography, venues and ornate cake displays. Brides-to-be excitedly waltzed up and down every aisle

envisaging what their fairy-tale wedding would be like. There were also many prize-giveaways, one of which included a voucher for a wedding dress worth R30 000. What made the show especially interesting was that it catered for diversity. There were traditional African wedding dresses, classic white dresses and a variety of men’s suits and flower-girl dresses. There was something unique to cater for every couple.

South African cricket team Proteas beat Sri Lanka by 153 runs on Sunday 20 July. This vic-tory is greatly welcomed by local cricket fans, as this was South Africa’s third win in Galle and the first one since 2000, reported News24. This was also Hashim Amla’s first win as Test captain.

South Africa bowled Sri Lanka out twice, with Dale Steyn contributing to this victory with his quick bowl-ing. Steyn took nine wickets for 99 runs and was named Man of the Match. Morne Morkel picked up four wickets as Sri Lanka’s second innings ended on 216. Sri Lanka needed another 260 runs on the fifth and final day with nine wickets in hand. Sri Lanka needed to make 260 runs, but only managed 216 in the second innings. They were bowled out for 106 runs and lost the first Test. South Africa is currently ranked number two in the world at Test cricket. If the Proteas perform well at the second Test in Colombo from July 24-28, they could very well dethrone Australia, who is the cur-rent world number one Test team.

Record field for 2014 XCOThe 2014 South African Mountain Biking Cross- Country( XCO) and Downhill(DH) Championships were held at Thaba Trails this past weekend with a record field of entries: 233 for XCO and 31 for downhill (based on online entries). Even talk on the ground between competitors was that they had never seen so many people compete and so many spectators. The XCO took place on Saturday and the Downhill on Sunday. Rourke Croeser (Kargo Pro MTB Team) claimed the 2014 South African Cross-country National Championship Elite men’s title in a time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 29 seconds. Second place went to Matthys Beukes 01:36:57 and third place James Reid 01:38:06. The Elite men completed 6 laps of the 4.5km dusty and rocky track.Croeser said this was his greatest achievement to date, “I’ve won every title since racing in the Sprog category, but being the Elite champ is being the champion of the country. I can wear this jersey on my shoulders with great pride. This is the greatest achievement to win.”Mariske Strauss (Orange Monkey Pro Team) was also smiling ear to ear when she put in a dominant performance to claim the 2014 South African Cross-country National Championship Elite women’s title in a time of 1 hour 35 minutes and 35 seconds. She achieved

this even after taking a tumble in the rock garden. The Elite women completed 5 laps. Strauss felt that racing in this event was a nice opener for her for the Commonwealth Games. Cherie Vale (Paarl Media) claimed the silver medal in a time of 01:39:10, while Candice Neethling (Time Freight VELOlife) claimed bronze in 01:40:40. The Downhill Championships was also highly contested but defending Champion, Tiaan Odendaal, took his third consecutive Elite men’s title with a time of 1 minute: 57 seconds.More talk on the ground showed that many riders welcomed the champions at Thaba Trails rather than Pietermaritzburg Cascades MTB park, saying that different riders should be given a chance to win rather than the local boys who practise at their home grounds at Cascades; but, on the other hand, some riders felt Thaba Trails was too dusty.Nevertheless Thaba Trails did an excellent job and Cycling South Africa extends a big thanks of thank you to Wendell Bole and his entire team at Thaba Trails, for preparing the superb and challenging course and for hosting the event. tame TIMES would like to commend Bole and the Thaba Trails team for bringing such a big event to the South and showcasing what we have to offer.

TOP THREE ELITE: Matthys Beukes (2nd) Rourke Croeser (1st), James Reid (3rd)
