visited the school on the day to hand out uniforms and clothes to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. Other authorities present were from the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services and Metro Police, the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum and the SAPS mounted unit. Representatives from Stellar Transport and AA Diamonds, sponsors of the generous handover, were also present.“I used to go to school with worn-out shoes and torn trousers,” Colonel Shiburi told the learners. “But I am here to tell you I made it. Today I stand in front of you as an overcomer.”Earlier, the strong team of uniformed authorities had driven in convoy to the school, in officially marked vehicles, sirens on and lights flashing in a brilliant display of unity. The tame TIMES had been a part of this electrifying convoy.By the time the procession arrived at the school, the learners were gathered outside in the assembly area, and were singing in unison for the guests.An emotional Mr Ceilan Naidoo, the school principal, explained that the school was a miracle of community effort. He told the story of how it had started in 2000, from the existing Klopperpark Preschool. “The primary school was started with the existing Klopperpark Preschool facilities in place. There were no classrooms, nothing that would make for a respectable primary school. At the time, there was also no nutrition programme for disadvantaged learners. Many of the learners came to school hungry with just water in their stomachs.”He explained how, through partnerships with faith-based organisations, and government, police and NGO officials, the school had become what it is today. Officials addressing the children reminded them to do their schoolwork with their whole hearts, to make only choices which they would be proud of, and to embrace their education, which was the key to overcoming any obstacles to a bright future.“We are here today because every child matters,” said Mr Naidoo.

Fewer than 10 Edenvale residents attended a meeting on the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality 2015/2016 budget at the Edenvale Council Chambers on Tuesday last week, despite the meeting having been advertised in various places, online and in print.Councillor Eddie Taylor, DA Shadow Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for fi nance, briefed Edenvale residents on the budget at the meeting, supported by local ward councillors Heather Hart and Bill Rundle who were ready to answer any questions that

residents might have.“Residents and ratepayers missed a golden opportunity to interrogate how the Metro is spending their money and what service cost increases to expect in the next three years,” said Clr Hart after the meeting.She explained that, according to the Municipal Systems Act, every budget has to be subjected to public participation before fi nal approval. “The usual budget Imbizos are often very poorly attended by Edenvale/Bedfordview ratepayers,” she said. “Just a few come to voice their opinion or to listen

to what is being said. We held this meeting to give the community the true picture of how the Metro wants to collect and spend money, and to let them engage in intelligent debate if necessary.”“It is a fact today that families have to make decisions on the basis of affordability when it comes to family or for that matter, personal fi nances,” said Clr Rundle. “Running a home today takes up the biggest chunk of one’s disposable income. This is why it is very important to keep up to date on issues that will affect your cash fl ow, in this case, the

increased costs in water, electricity, rates and taxes and most other services that the local government structure provides.”He explained that most communities had their own specifi c needs and these meetings gave residents the opportunity to give their input and state their demands. “Failure to participate is tantamount to writing a blank cheque for the Metro to do as they please.”A meeting enabling further public participation before fi nalisation of the budget will be held on 16 April. Poor attendance at important meeting

I recently sat in on an assembly at Bedfordview Primary School. The school’s theme for the month of March was ‘perseverance’ and a video clip relevant to the topic was projected

on the screen for the learners. The clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxmbmcDrXRk) shows the efforts of a determined pig called Ormie to get a jar of choc chip cookies from off the top of the fridge. The poor thing tries everything to reach the biscuits. In one scene, he ties plungers to his hooves, hoping to walk up the side of the fridge. Of course, everything goes horribly wrong - the fridge doors flap outwards with the pressure from the plungers and he lands up with one plunger stuck over his tail and another over his snout.

In another scene, he tries to catapult himself to where the biscuits are and ends up being flung far into the distance. In another, he jumps from a plane, kitted out in skydiving equipment, hoping to land on the top of the fridge – to no avail. But he doesn’t give up. He tries everything – rocket propulsion, a trampoline, a trapeze swing, a chainsaw, a fishing rod …Eventually, he collapses against the fridge in exhaustion and the cookie jar tips over, releasing a rainfall of biscuits. He reaches out and grabs one and is about to take a bite out of it, when the jar itself falls down, covering his mouth. Oh dear!Maybe at times you feel a little like Ormie the pig – whether it’s trying to get the service delivery you expect (see page 3), or trying to overcome an addiction (see page 8). Or maybe you’re trying to get your business off the ground in tough times (see page 7). Others have made the same journey as you and have overcome (read Colonel Sevha Shiburi’s encouraging words on page 1). Police have urged Morninghill residents to remain vigilant following a spate of house robberies in the area. Sergeant Mduduza Nhlabathi, Bedfordview police spokesman, said there was a problem with house robberies in the area and that he was aware of four to five incidents which had recently occurred.Among these was an incident in Sugarbush Street, on 12 March, around 11.30am, in which six armed men, one with an AK47, tied up a young man and demanded his valuables. “A resident returned home from the shops and noticed a grey Audi Q5 parked next to his gate,” said Sergeant Nhlabathi. “He used the remote control to open his gate but realised it had been jammed.”He said the Audi had pulled up behind the man, and someone had come out from it, pointing at him with a firearm. “The men exited the vehicle and demanded the man’s keys and watch, taking him inside the house, where they tied him up.”He said the men had demanded to know where the father’s firearm and money were. “He heard them moving up and down the house and then things went quiet. The men had fled the scene with the valuables. The man’s domestic worker then helped to untie him.”These concerns over Morninghill Security were raised at the recent meeting of the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF), which was chaired by BCPF chairperson Gavin Henry, where questions were raised as to how the perpetrators were gaining entry into the pristine suburb, which is marked off with boom-gates.Ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys expressed her concerns that a boom-gate was not sufficient to secure the area, as many of the crimes had involved ‘gangs’ of perpetrators,

in some instances, carrying AK47s. “The community needs to work together with police officials to alleviate crime in the area.”Organising a security meeting for Morninghill residents was discussed, and Clr Humphreys said she wanted this initiative to come from the community - as authorities needed their willing cooperation as far as crime prevention in the area was concerned. It was suggested the community employ a system similar to that of the Bedfordview Residents’ Action Group-monitored area, whereby special vehicles were deployed consistently to comb the area for crime. Such a system has been effective in keeping the crime in the RAG area under control.A local nursery school in the area also informed the tame TIMES they were increasing security measures following the threat of crime in the area, and would be demanding that special identity stickers be carried on the vehicles of caregivers and parents before they were allowed on to the nursery school premises.Sergeant Nhlabathi said residents needed to stay alert and follow basic safety precautions, such as keeping security gates locked, and alarm systems activated. “A household was robbed when the doors were left open for the dogs and cats. Don’t make it easy for the perpetrators to enter. Also, when you come home from the shops, make sure that you aren’t being followed and if you suspect this is the case, drive to the nearest police station.”He said the police had identified shortcomings in the security of the area and residents needed to be especially vigilant on rubbish collection days, when employing gardening services and around construction sites.“We have identified positive leads and are working on these.” He said he wanted the perpetrators to know: “We know who you are and we are coming for you.”

As much as 34 to 38 percent of Ekurhuleni’s water is “unaccounted for” in offi cial records. This surprising statistic was presented by Councillor Eddie Taylor, DA Shadow Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for fi nance, at a recent meeting on the 2015/2016 Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s proposed budget at the Edenvale Council Chambers on Tuesday last week.Clr Taylor alleged this fi gure should be well below 30 percent and was a refl ection of how much water was being lost through leaks and wastage, caused by the ageing infrastructure. He said the Metro had plans to fi x this infrastructure but this was a ten-year project – in the meantime, he said millions were being lost from the Metro’s coffers

through water wastage each year. He said he believed offi cials needed to treat water leaks the same as they did a fi re. “When there is a fi re, they despatch fi remen immediately and attend to the problem at hand with a sense of urgency.” “The Ekurhuleni Metro is losing in the region of R400 million each year because of water wastage,” he said.He said presently there is a massive shortage of water – one of the reasons water has gone up 14.5% in the draft budget. “Last year, it was estimated this increase would be only 8.1 percent; however Rand Water has increased the costs of bulk water due to the water shortage.”The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality had not provided comment at the time of going to print.*See next week’s tame TIMES for more in-depth news on the budget.

Rescuers called off the search for the remaining passengers of Flight QZ8501 on 17 March, almost three months after the Airbus A320-200 went down in stormy weather on its way to Singapore, killing all 162 people on board.The international search, which included ships and aircraft from several nations, has been scaled back in recent weeks, with only a small number of new bodies found. AIRASIA SEARCH CALLED OFF Six killed by lightning

Six people died and five were injured when they were struck by lightning on the N8 about 20km outside Botshabelo. The men, aged between 20 and 40, are construction workers who took shelter from the rain in a structure close by. The Modderfontein Conservation Society offers the community the chance to walk in the tranquil beauty of the Modderfontein Nature Reserve area in the company of good friends and nature lovers.On the society’s programme are walks for hikers and birders, held every Tuesday, as well as on a Saturday and Sunday of each month. Bird walks are also held on

the first Saturday of every month.
