You can achieve your dream. This is the message of Sylvia Dash to all dreamers out there, on the launch of her long awaited dream, the opening of her own modelling agency last week, which is a franchise of Figures Models. After 15 years of working in a ‘man’s world’ as an insurance attorney, Dash decided last year to leave the corporate world and take the risk of pursuing her life-long passion, modelling. “My dad had just passed away and his passing made me reconsider all of my priorities,” she said. After years working in courts, in a high pressure corporate environment and surrounded by men, Dash dusted off her stilettos and put on the shoes she believes she was born to wear.“I heard the Edenvale franchise of Figures Models was available and I saw this as a sign from God to go for it!”Daughters Cassandra and Veronique Richardt both model and, says their mom, “I have seen the difference modelling has made to their lives and to their confidence. They are well-presented, enthusiastic little ladies who know their worth.”She explained the modelling school was

\

more than just an agency and was also a school for teaching acting, presenting, singing, dancing and teaching, among other skills.“I don’t regret my time in law as I believe this gave me confidence and life experience, including business skills,” she said. Dash said she fell in love with the profession when she trained as a model years ago. “I believe the training gave me the edge in the courts I worked in as an attorney. “I was able to look a man in the eye and give him a firm handshake, knowing I was his equal.”

A DREAM COME TRUE: Madison Hayward with Cassandra Richardt

Having grown up in the 80s, I have a special place in my heart for Care Bears, My Little Ponies and Cabbage Patch Kids. I know the steps – and yes, lyrics - of ‘The Locomotion’. I watched the Olsen twins grow up on the screen, from their shared role in playing the adorable baby Michelle in Full House. I shared the heartbreak of many little girls in finding out about Kylie Minogue’s split from Jason Donovan. I ‘crimped’ my hair, and dressed it up with luminous ‘scrunchies.’ If you were part of this generation, you might remember Woofles the dog from the 1980s TV series Pumpkin Patch. The

man behind Woofles, Clive Morris, recently visited Edenvale (see page 4) to share his experiences in the popular children’s TV series. I sometimes wonder what memories will stir the hearts of the Generator Generation? Are we so caught up as adults in watching the potholes, gantries and load shedding schedules that we are missing the remarkable and defining things this decade has to offer – those which the Generator Generation will look back on one day with warm nostalgia? One of my favourite things about the 2000s is ‘onesies’ (all-in-one pyjamas): when you wear onesies to bed (and there is such a variety to choose from), you don’t have to worry about tucking your pyjama pants into your socks to keep yourself warm on extra cold nights. I also like the baby prams

that have been streamlined and adapted to allow serious runners to compete in high-speed races and take junior along for the experience. No longer is ‘tweeting’ limited to birds and never before have so many celeb babies been named after fruits and herbs. So next time you find yourself sitting in your onesies, tweeting by candlelight, just a little frustrated that the power has gone out – again - remember: “This too shall pass”

Bedfordview police have warned motorists to keep valuables under their seats while driving following a spate of smash-and-grab crimes in the area, specifically at the intersections of Van Buuren and Van Der Linde Roads.Bedfordview police’s spokesperson Sergeant Mduduza Nhlabathi said residents should not support vagrants along these main roads in Bedfordview, as in many instances suspicious-looking persons at road intersections had been linked to the crimes.

Pay attention at intersections

House robberies in the Edenvale area are an ongoing concern, with most of these incidents involving ‘soft targets,’ such as domestic workers.Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts has advised residents to educate their domestic workers on crime prevention. He also urged residents who hear a noise or notice something suspicious to call the police or sector vehicles before going to investigate. He said in one incident, a man living in The Avenues had come home from work to find the gate of his property open. “He went inside to investigate and what should have been a house burglary escalated into a house robbery. Please call the police if you notice anything suspicious on your own property or that of your neighbour. Once again, it comes down to knowing your neighbour and paying attention.”

Police have warned motorists to be vigilant about not keeping valuables such as iPads and laptops in their vehicles while shopping or parking their cars in the area.Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said theft out of motor vehicles, particularly around malls, was a big concern and general safety precautions should be followed in locking valuable property away when parking vehicles. He said in some incidents residents falsely reported crimes to gain from insurance but that these perpetrators would be apprehended by police and charged with perjury, which is a “serious offence.”He said each case of theft out of a motor vehicle was investigated by the police.

The Edenvale Police made nine drug-related arrests over the past week, including the arrest of a man in possession of 1kg of dagga.Edenvale Police’s crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said this amounted to around R4 000 to R5 000 worth of the drug.He said other drugs found in possession of those arrested included Cat and crystal meth. “Some of the excuses we are given by those we apprehend are laughable,” said Lieutenant Colonel Roberts, “Many say, ‘It’s my first time.’ “ Still, despite the ‘laughable reasons,’ the crime is serious and police have a zero tolerance towards drugs, according to Lieutenant Colonel Roberts. He said part of the police’s crime prevention strategy included visiting schools and educating learners on the dangers of drugs. Those arrested will appear in court on a charge of possession of drugs. “First- time offenders are offered a diversion programme to help them get off drugs and clean up their lives,” he said.

Ekurhuleni’s e-siyakhokha online payment system is up and running, with an additional high-tech function set to address technical glitches experienced by users in December. The municipality said the e-siyakhokha system has been enhanced with technology that can detect statement integration failure. The enhancement follows challenges experienced in December when some residents could not access their statements after the system failed to detect the statement integration failure.Residents can continue to enjoy the convenience of viewing, paying and downloading their monthly account statements online on https://www.e-siyakhokha.co.za anytime. The online system also enables residents

to pre-date payments (i.e. you can set the system to pay your account on a set date with a set amount if you are out of town). The system immediately gives you notification of payment, keeps records of your accounts and payments from the time you register to use this method and permits you to query your account online. The due date for payment is fixed and it does not change from month to month, which helps users not to miss payments. “The municipality sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience caused to customers who could not view their December statements. “Ratepayers are encouraged to continue utilising the online platform that has been introduced for their convenience,” said Ekurhuleni spokesman Themba Gadebe.

With an increase in load shedding, residents are advised to be vigilant in keeping alarm system, torch, cellphone, and backup power supply batteries fully charged at all times.“You should have a plan in place regarding how you can gain safe entry into your property and move about in your home in the event of a power outage,” advised Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer. “Please make sure that the battery to your alarm system is fully charged at all times and make sure there is always a means to communicate with people outside of your premises if needs be, by ensuring cell phone batteries and backup batteries are always charged. Also, keep candles, torches and backup lighting systems within easy reach. Having a plan in place in the event of load shedding is always the best option.”

Potholes have raised concerns from local authorities and residents, with allegations circulating that there are problems related to a lack of tar.“Our biggest issue right at this moment is that of potholes and roads that are slowly collapsing due to the Metro’s inability to appoint a service provider,” said ward 18 councillor Heather Hart. She alleged this was due to a court interdict brought against them by the previous service

provider because of rumoured irregularities and problems related to a lack of tar.“This is extremely frustrating as we see our once beautiful roads slowly disintegrating!”Ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys mirrored these concerns in her address to residents and advised residents to report potholes to 086 054 3000 and to keep records of communications with Council. Be sure to get a reference number. This helps with the tracking of the complaint.”The tame TIMES was still awaiting comment from the Ekurhuleni Metro at the time of going to press.·

A COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER

With only just two weeks having passed since the shootout at the Bedford Centre, stories of courage and goodwill have emerged, showing that the determination of a community is stronger than the threat of crime. At the meeting of the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) on Saturday morning, it was announced that Bedfordview Police’s Victim Support - in liaison with centre management - had gone out full force with a strong team of around 30 members on the Friday and Monday after the armed robbery to council tenants and shoppers who were at the centre during the shootout.Teamwork between key players made this trauma debriefing initiative a huge success. It would also seem the aftermath of the armed robbery has strengthened ties between Bedford Centre management and police authorities, as this past week centre management offered to pay for the funeral of a young Klopper Park girl allegedly murdered by her mother using rat poison.Constable Maphuti Kgare from the Bedfordview police’s social crime prevention unit said she did not want

to disclose details of the murder case, as it was still sensitive and investigations were ongoing. What she could reveal was that the Bedfordview community had been notified by newsletter shortly after the incident, asking if anyone could assist with money to pay for the girl’s funeral as there were no funds to honour her in this way. “Within a short while, we had R400 in surplus of what was needed,” she said. The funeral was held in Elandsfontein on Sunday.Gavin Henry, BCPF chairperson, said when the Bedford Centre management had offered to pay for the funeral, he had told them out of respect for the community which had come together for the cause and already donated money, he would be using the money provided by them. “I told them we were incredibly grateful and asked that they would be on standby for us for any situation or need we had in the future.”*The BCPF is currently looking for bicycles to give to policemen on patrol through mall areas. You might remember Woofles the lovable security dog from the 1980s TV series Pumpkin Patch? The man behind the memorable character, Clive Morris, recently entertained members of the Writers 2000 club at Inyoni Creek in Modderfontein. For some, it was hard to believe the distinguished man in front of them was the man behind the much loved dog which held so many South African hearts in his paws. But they only had to close their eyes to hear the familiar voice of the famous onscreen character.Morris said his experience in Pumpkin Patch is what stirred in him the desire to master scriptwriting. He said that during more than a thousand episodes of the series, he had “tons of learning time” and his experience in reading scripts was a launch pad into scriptwriting. He told the story of how his dad had called one day saying he should contact Penguin Pools urgently. With Woofles still in his mind he had visions of being asked to be a ‘Kreepy Krawly.’ On responding to the message, however, he realised the caller was from Penguin Films and not Penguin Pools. Morris was then asked to be part of the SABC TV series, Velaphi the Messenger.

His career in working as a scriptwriter and for TV has had some interesting turns. Among these was his work for Carte Blanche when he had the experience of having a lawyer comb through his writing word for word before every production. For more information, contact [email protected].

Members of the Household Consumers League (HCL) of Bedfordview held their AGM (annual general meeting) in the James Sadie Library Auditorium, Hawley Road, on Wednesday morning last week.“What people don’t realise is that we are over 60 years old, having originally started as the Housewives League,” said chairperson Jennifer Tselentis. “When Pick ‘n Pay opened its doors, its managing director Raymond Ackerman said they weren’t going to do advertising but would rather deduct the money budgeted for advertising from product costs.”“But three months after opening, their

first advert appeared in the newspaper. Well, that was it! The next day, women from the Housewives Leagues across the country picketed outside the Pick ‘n Pay head offices wanting an explanation. Their response drew an apology from Mr Ackerman who said he regretted making the statement, as it was a foolish business decision not to advertise.”Tselentis spoke with great optimism to the members: “These were strong women and we hope we can become just as strong.”She said the group had recently lodged a formal complaint about the water content of chicken to the relevant authorities and this complaint had not been without clout. “It is unacceptable that as much as a third of the poultry we buy is water-based - so if you pay R36 for chicken then you are spending R12 on plain water! You would pay less for

a 500ml bottle of purified water.”Following success in challenging this issue, she said the HCL now wanted to challenge the authorities on issues like the weight of store-bought eggs and yoghurt content.“I was told, ‘You and the girls you represent are troublemakers,’ by a consumer company because of our persistence but I see this kind of remark as evidence that we are having an impact!” she said. The existing committee will remain the same for the new year. Tselentis took over the role of chairperson from Gail Mason, who received a commendation for her good work at Wednesday’s meeting.

PASSIONATE: Body Stress Release therapist Rene Taylor addressed members at Wednesday’s meeting.

At the next meeting of the HCL, on March 11, from 9.30am, the discerning members will do a

taste overview of hot cross buns from different stores in the area.

For weeks, editors, columnists and journalists around the country had been speculating furiously about what stunts our MPs in red would pull when Parliament opened on Thursday night - and the Honourable Members did not disappoint them. Quite predictably, they managed to turn what should have been a dignifi ed SONA broadcast into reality television, but not in a good way.Nevertheless, amid all the concern about the embarrassing mayhem in Parliament, one very important question has been pushed into the background. Voters and journalists alike had been so focused on when and how Zuma will “pay back the money” that they have largely forgotten to ask whose deep pockets are being emptied to distribute red berets around the country. If voters want to know what is driving the EFF and what they will do next, two questions need to be answered. Who is funding the EFF, and why? Not so long ago, Malema was photographed on his cabbage and tomato farm – before it, along with his Mercedes Vito, half-built Sandown mansion and other personal possessions were attached by the NPA. It is no secret that he grew up in a small township house with his grandmother, so he does not have a network of rich relatives or an inheritance to rely on.In South Africa all political parties in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures receive funding from taxpayers in strict proportion to the number of their representatives, so opposition parties need generous sponsors if they are to compete with the ruling party. Even his MP’s salary – with all its allowances – is not enough to

bankroll a political party. The Honourable Malema’s salary may keep him in some of the style he has become accustomed to, but it will not pay for party conferences, posters and T-shirts or feed party members at meetings. In order to serve the needs of democracy and to keep factions at bay, the EFF (like all political parties) must hold regular elective conferences in each region and province of the country to elect the leaders who will administer the branches, fi ght elections and issue statements to the media. Members will want feedback meetings from their MPs and provincial MPLs. Members will want to give input on policies and debate on issues from how to solve unemployment, to the content of school curricula, to making Eskom work - all at long-winded policy conferences. Since many of these members are in all likelihood either unemployed or supporting unemployed family members, the party needs to pay for transport to the conference venue, over-night accommodation and meals. While votes bring in money, money is required to bring in votes. The fi nancial demands on political parties of maintaining visibility between elections and fi ghting elections are huge. Posters have to be put up, T-shirts must be handed out and party agents need to be fed on election day. Then there is the not-so-small matter of saving up for election deposits. Without fi nancial backing, Malema, Zille and Zuma would not be where they are today. Why are the identities of their funders kept so secret? Voters have a right to know who is really running the country.

The nation was shocked and appalled at the goings on at the State of the Nation Address 2015 (SONA2015) on Thursday evening. The president had not been on the podium for long when EFF MP Godrich Gardee interrupted his speech to ask when he would pay back the money spent on Nkandla. An obviously prepared Speaker Baleka Mbete quelled this and after numerous EFF MPs raised the same concerns, she asked them to leave. When the MPs did not, things became heated when security personnel were asked to remove the MPs from the chamber and a scuffle ensued.Once calm had been restored, the DA parliamentary spokesperson raised the issue of using the police force to remove MPs. DA MPs were unsatisfied with Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces’ response to the questions of whether the security personnel were SAPS members or not, and staged a walk out of parliament.ACDP MP Kenneth Meshoe, a Boksburg resident, said that he found Zuma’s speech uninspiring and that he expected the president to go into more detail regarding load shedding seeing as that is what people are concerned about.Meshoe also said he almost fell asleep and had to step out for some fresh air to keep himself awake. He added that the president failed to give the nation hope. (ewn.co.za)

Portland, Oregon - Oregon officials are warning early morning joggers and park visitors in the state capital Salem to watch out for an owl which has an affinity for hats after at least four people were attacked in a month.

No one was seriously hurt in any of the incidents, but Brad Hilliard, 36, was one of at least two joggers to have lost headgear in a brush with the bird.“It was kind of amazing how it just swooped down and

grabbed my hat like that,” Hilliard told Reuters of how he became the acquisitive avi an’s latest victim early

one morning this week.“It just pulled it right off my head like it was nothing!”

Keith Keever, the city’s parks superintendent, said officials had never heard of a case like it before. (iol.

The 3RC RockingFuture career expo team recently visited Matric learners at Queens High School in Kensington and Rand Tutorial College in Observatory. The RockingFuture expo, supported by Hisense, is aimed at Matriculants in upper LSM schools across South Africa and encourages Matric learners to make informed decisions about their careers and lives after school.Managing director of 3RC, Kay Cheytanov, explained: “The saying goes that education starts at home. But in this day and age, in

terms of technology, education starts at school. The way children are learning is evolving with more schools introducing tablets in the classroom. This is why Hisense, manufacturers of tablets, got involved.”RockingFuture, will be hosted at 290 schools nationwide, reaching 35 000 Matric learners and will feature career guidance, preparation for the learners’ futures and chances to win Hisense products.
