The Little Eden Foundation recently celebrated the opening of the new Little Eden Convent, known as Domus Our Lady Mother of all Children. Present at this auspicious occasion was The Most Reverend Archbishop Buti Tlhagale of the Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg, who visited to bless the new establishment. The Sisters of the Imitation of Christ from India who serve at Little Eden will live in this house. Currently there are six nuns who serve at the society.Little Eden spokesperson Nicholette Muthige explained the building was recently acquired by the Little Eden Foundation and has been named Domus Our Lady Mother of all Children. “The late founders of Little Eden, Danny and Domitilla Hyams, lived there from 1956

with their family. It was at the same house

that Domitilla had the vision which set in motion a series of events that led to Little Eden becoming what it is today.” Little Eden CEO, Mrs Lucy Slaviero, said, “Domitilla has always had an unfaltering faith in God and in His divine providence. In January 2010, three Sisters of the Imitation of Christ of the Bethany Generalate, an order of Catholic nuns from India, arrived to commence their service at Little Eden. These women have joined our wonderful, dedicated staff in being the hands of Jesus in caring for our residents, always with the values of respect, sanctity of life and love and care, being the way we carry out our service. It was only fitting, once the Little Eden Foundation acquired this house for long-term volunteers that it be allocated as a convent for the Sisters,” she said. For more information on Little Eden, visit www.littleeden.org.za

Families have their own traditions. Mine has always celebrated April Fool’s Day, as one might a birthday, or Mother’s or Father’s Day. Growing up, you had to regard every phone-call, food item, conversation, with suspicion on 1 April. Forbes.com lists some of the greatest April Fool’s hoaxes of all time by news station, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC). In 1957, the company announced a “bumper spaghetti crop” and showed footage of Swiss farmers pulling strands of spaghetti off trees. Following the announcement, the station received many phone-calls from companies interesting in growing their own spaghetti. They got up to their nonsense again in 1965, with the announcement of a great advancement in technology, “Smell-o-vision.” As its name suggests, this was TV with an edge, allowing for the transmission of smell over airwaves. In 1980, news reports on April Fool’s Days said Big Ben was going to be given a facelift, with a new digital clock face replacing the old one. BBC further stated the four clock hands from the iconic

landmark were available to the first four readers who contacted the news station that day.If you read our Your World This Week section in last week’s tame TIMES, you probably read “Chinese Scientist Breeds Vegetarian Cat,” a story about a scientist who got tired of the hunting habits of the common household cat and decided to breed a variety of cat with a penchant for spinach and other leafy greens. Or the article “Marking the equator with a fence,” or “Rats raid shebeen.” On behalf of the tame TIMES team: “April Fool’s!”There were a few readers who actually believed large rats had drunk the liquor reserves from a Thokoza tavern – and sadly, browsing through today’s news headlines, it would seem that some ‘real stories’ in the news are more bizarre than any bogus stories conjured up on April Fool’s Day. As they say, truth is often stranger than fiction.

By Heather DjungaA shootout outside a bottle store in the Edenvale CBD on Tuesday evening last week (31 March), around 7pm, ended in the arrest of six suspects and the recovery of three fi rearms.“Police put their lives on the line every day,” said Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, Edenvale police’s crime prevention offi cer. “I was going out to buy a cold drink when I received a call notifying me of an armed robbery at a bottle store in the CBD,” he said. He said he dispatched a call to the response team and police waited outside the store for the robbers.“When they came out of the store, we were waiting for them.”He said what ensued was a shootout as the robbers panicked and began to run off in all directions, shooting as they did so. “We were concerned about the public and were mindful of this throughout the incident,” he said. He said four of the robbers fl ed out the front of the building, and two, out the back. “Some of them, as they ran, shot out behind them, shooting randomly, without concern as to

who might be in the way. Fortunately, no one was injured.” He advised residents who fi nd themselves in this kind of situation to stay out of the way, and to take cover: “A bullet always has to land somewhere. It is best to take cover during a shootout.”He said police managed to corner off the robbers and successfully arrested six men, who appeared in court today (7 April).Mentioning the recent incident on the N3 in which three police offi cers from the

Sandringham police station were killed during a shootout, he expressed his sympathy and explained police went to work knowing they could fi nd

themselves in a dangerous situation. “Through training, we are taught to respond instinctively in high pressure situations. “We are taught how to maintain our calm in these situations. When tension is high at a crime scene, this is when the results of our training kick in.”On the same day of this incident, in the morning, Edenvale police also arrested three suspects driving an Audi, which was hijacked in Alberton in 2010.

On Friday 5 April 2013, Jeppe High School learner Wesley Simpson and his girlfriend Tamly Lewis were killed in an accident in Edenvale. Wesley’s big love was hockey and now the school, in the process of erecting a new hockey pavilion, has decided to name the new pavilion, the Wesley Simpson Hockey Pavilion.A music festival and family fun day will be held at Huddle Park on 18 April to raise money for the pavilion. Called the Yolo (You Only Live Once) Music Festival, it will be held in honour of Wesley.“Friday 5 April 2013 changed our lives forever,” Sue Simpson told the tame TIMES. “After attending my brother-in-law’s funeral in Benoni, my daughter Natalie, my son Wesley and his girlfriend Tamlyn Lewis

travelling home to Edenvale when their car was hit by a speeding motor cyclist, who was carrying a passenger.”It is believed that the biker was travelling at an excessive speed. The car was flipped on its roof and Wesley and Tamlyn died instantly. The biker and passenger also passed away.“We received a call to say that Natalie had been in an accident, so we rushed to the scene to be faced with a horrific sight. The paramedics were taking Natalie out of the car, who had just regained consciousness. My husband, Stuart, was called over to identify the deceased passengers. Only then were we aware that we had lost Wesley and Tamlyn.”She said the Simpson family had agreed to pay towards this pavilion. “To raise the funds we have put together the festival and family fun day, which will run from noon until around 10pm, and will have music (band and DJs), flea markets, food stalls, a kiddies play area, jumping castles and a beer tent. We are hoping to get over 2 000 people to attend and support us in this event.”Wesley was a true Jeppe old boy and the following message was found on his Facebook page: “Jeppe will always be my home away from home. The best school ever, wouldn’t want it any other way. For the black and white you will always be in my heart. Love my Jeppe brothers”.

Bedfordview police have urged residents to be vigilant in securing their properties. This warning comes following a spate of house robberies in the area.Bedfordview police spokesman Sergeant Mduduza Nhlabathi has reminded residents always to keep their doors and security gates locked and to remain alert when approaching their residences. “Make sure you aren’t being followed when returning home after visiting shopping centres,” he said.

He has advised residents to remain vigilant on rubbish removal days, and around construction sites; and, furthermore, to be cautious when hiring employees, domestic workers and gardening services, always checking employee credentials before taking anyone into employment.Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer, echoed Sergeant Nlabathi’s warnings, urging residents to be aware of what was happening around them.

Following the recent death of another child in Laurie Road, Edenvale – just 300m from the site where a child was recently killed while crossing the road - Edenvale residents have joined in a petition, demanding local government do something about the safety of the road.“We are adamant there will be no more deaths on local roads,’ said ward 18 councillor Heather Hart who first approached Council with concerns about the road’s safety in 2013, to no avail. In a petition spearheaded by local authorities, residents are standing in unity with councillors asking that roads in the area be given urgent attention by Council. Ward 19 councillor Bill Rundle told the tame TIMES it was reported that the 15-year-old was on his bicycle on his way home from Greenstone Shopping Centre. “He came down Aitken Road and at the junction with Laurie Road in Illiondale, he turned right into Laurie Road and proceeded towards the Modderfontein Road intersection. This was around about 5 to 5.15pm on the Friday afternoon.”He said according to witness reports, the boy was apparently overtaken by a small delivery truck and was either pushed off or swerved when the vehicle passed him. “He hit a curb stone and the bike went into the veld. He fell into the road and must have died instantly.”Together with Clr Hart, he has expressed his concerns over “the appalling state of the roads” in the area. “In my opinion the condition of the roads and this particular intersection contributed to the disaster.”Clr Hart said she had made many efforts to get the Council to attend to the problem and that the decision to put up a petition had come as a last resort. “Something has to be done!” she said.Clr Rundle said he had been assisting Clr Hart as the spokesperson for the DA for Roads and Transport. “There are several emails recorded in the last two weeks trying to get the Metro to respond to our collective please and urgings,” he said. He said the boy’s parents were trying to come to grips with what had happened. What is even more horrendous is the fact that they sat there with there with their son’s body for almost five hours before the mortuary

ambulance came on to the scene. Last year a young girl died in the area while trying to cross this very busy road. It is reported that there have been almost 22 accidents in the past few months in the Laurie Road area.”Residents are petitioning that the installation of the proposed Laurie Road circle recommence without further delays and that the necessary measures (barriers, signage, infill) be put in place to make the area safer until completion. They have further petitioned that a traffic light be installed as promised by Metro at the intersection of Aileen and Laurie roads and have asked that the local council erect a suitably placed pedestrian crossing, and a traffic light or circle at the Hubert Mathew and Laurie Road intersection.Furthermore, they have asked for a daily EMPD presence to control the behaviour of taxis speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road through Illiondale. The local authorities and residents question why Edenvale has been ‘side-lined’ with regards to the repair and maintenance of roads. Clr Rundle added there were many hazardous potholes in the area and he was concerned about the impact these would have on motorists. “There are potholes at the junction of Terrace Road and Van Riebeeck Ave which have been reported for months now,” he said. “Several vehicles have sustained serious damages to their wheels and under carriages there in the past week. The swerving and dodging by the motorists to avoid the potholes is going to cause an accident. This is a main feeder road to and from Modderfontein Road and Greenstone,” he said. Harry Karamichael, community activist and owner of the Karaglen Superspar, said that he was carrying a copy of the petition at his store. He said that by the Monday following the accident, five sheets of the petition had already been filled out by residents. “This is a very unfortunate incident and one which requires the community’s attention,” he said. The tame TIMES had not yet received comment from the Ekurhuleni Metro at the time of going to print. For more information on the petition, contact [email protected]

HAZARDOUS: Potholes at the corner of Terrace Road and Van Riebeeck Avenue are a death trap, say local ward councillors Bill Rundle and Heather Hart.

The Aura Thai Health Spa officially opened its doors to the public on Wednesday evening last week. This serene spa, as owner Paulo Calisto explained, is a haven of Thailand in the heart of Bedfordview. Calisto said the therapists came from Thailand where they were trained according to Thai tradition. Furthermore, the spa’s décor was not only inspired by Thailand, but was imported from the country, making the Aura Thai Health Spa an authentic Thai experience. The spa incorporates rooms for couples and for groups (for example, for bachelorette parties). Calisto explained the spa was part

of a franchise, with three other branches in the south of Johannesburg. “I believe we have been so successful because we have been mindful of couples and accommodated for them in our spa packages.”The establishment also includes an onsite refreshment area, with grass carpet and wood- and leaf-detailed walls, bringing the tranquil ambience of outdoors, indoors. Here, guests can relax with green or ginger tea, and fresh fruit salad and Thai spring rolls after an invigorating pampering session.Aura Thai Health Spa is situated at 6 Bradford Road, Bedfordview. Following the recent shoot-out at the Bedford Centre, centre management has assured the public that security at the centre has been upgraded to create a safer mall for both shoppers and tenants. One of the security upgrades will be an external vault, outside of the mall space, for handling the exchange of cash, which is expected to be in operation in the next fi ve months.According to centre spokesperson Nikki Savides, “We have employed a new specialised security company with dedicated tactical and public safety capabilities following the incident.” She said the company’s priority and focus was on profi ling, identifying and apprehending perpetrators before any incident occurred rather than on reacting to incidents that have already happened. “The strategy behind this priority is unique and is supported by sophisticated equipment and highly trained security personnel,” she explained. Savides said centre management was also negotiating with a specialised cash-handling company regarding the building and operating of an external vault. “This vault and related cash management and movement infrastructure will negate the need for any cash-in-transit (CIT) security guards to be in the mall and/or any public spaces.”She said the engineering and design work for such a vault was almost complete, with the system expected to be up and running within the next fi ve months. She said cash collection procedures related to the centre were also expected to change. “This will be done in order to keep the risk out of the public spaces and to remove the CIT guards out of the mall spaces. We have now

introduced a tactical backup team with armed offi cers who not only monitor activity outside the mall entrances, but escort CIT vehicles and where possible, sweep the areas inside and outside the mall before entry.”She said the centre management had also increased the number of control room operators surveying the CCTV systems and were currently in discussions with a range of companies reviewing highly sophisticated CCTV systems not yet used in this country. “Whilst we live in a violent country and robberies will never be completely preventable, we do however believe that we have done everything possible to ensure the safety of our shoppers, tenants and the general public,” she said.

READ TODAY, LEAD TOMORROWEncouraging a love of reading in the next generation could change South Africa forever. Arguably, the greatest problem facing the nation is unemployment, and one of the most effective ways to reduce joblessness is to improve the education of the work-force, and one of the best methods to upgrade academic performance is to foster a culture of reading. According to the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic

and Social Research, reading to children improves their thinking and reading ability. Their research has shown that parents who read to their children six or seven days a week give them an intellectual headstart of almost a year over children who do not enjoy this privilege, and even improve the performance of school beginners in numeracy. By Palesa Yates

Inspire a love of books from babyhood by buying cloth and cardboard books for babies and reading to toddlers and children.

Put children to bed with a book. Let them turn the light off when they are tired of reading. Set a bed-time, not a sleep-time.

Take your children to your local library regularly.

Encourage Grade Ones and Twos to read everything they see.

Put notes in your children’s school lunch-boxes or leave them lying around the house.Organise games that involve searching for written clues. For example, give children a slip of paper with the words “Look in the bread bin” written on it and hide another piece of paper saying “Check inside your

Inspiring children to read is not difficult. Here are a few hints and tips:

left slipper” in the bread bin and so on, until the children eventually find a reward such as a chocolate.

Write stories about your children in daily instalments for them to read – no child will be able to resist this one.

Read books yourself.

Make a scrapbook about subjects that interest your children. Add captions appropriate to their reading ability.

Let your children watch television programmes with sub-titles.

Most importantly, parents should not fuss too much about the literary merit of what their children are reading. What matters is encouraging children to read something.

Childhood memories are shaped by many things - among these, precious moments stolen behind library books, or at bed-time, with Mom or Dad reading from books with dog-eared pages and brightly coloured pictures. With the advent of modern technology, one would think library books and storybooks would take a back seat. However, avid readers maintain nothing can replace a good old-fashioned storybook, and that story time should be an essential part of any healthy child’s upbringing. There are many local libraries which cater for children, opening up a world of adventure and learning through their variety of books, activities and scheduled story times.

Celebrating the magic of books

One could have heard a pin drop in the hall as Dr Duncan Stepto addressed the Writers2000 members and visitors on the afternoon of Saturday 28 March. His passion for his subject – the journey from being an incidental poet to something more substantial, was, to say the least, palpable. In the first part of his presentation Dr Stepto began by recounting some of his experiences as a 17- year-old lad working on the Zambesi River in the mid-60s, when he penned his first poem. His inspiration came from reading the Jack London short story, Love of Life, with its exploration of a man’s moments of fear, anguish and raw hunger and, above all, an unconquerable will to survive.Dr Stepto’s exposure to the wilderness of the world around him played its role in moulding

him into an esteemed poet, and his early poems covered a wide spectrum of genres, encompassing the humour, nostalgia, beauty and savagery of nature.Fresh inspiration emerged while he was on the Mediterranean on a Greek tramp steamer, during time spent in the port of Alexandria, while travelling throughout Egypt, and later, under great stress during post-graduate studies at Wits. Frequent breaks to the Free State during this time, he said, “saved his soul.” Despite early negative feelings about Johannesburg, he created some deeply touching poetry describing “fractured images” created by rain puddles and, in another poem, the passing train windows of Daveyton Station. According to the renowned poet, poetic

gestation has no fixed timeline – it can be instantaneous, or take hours, months and even years. He shared a delightful phrase which recently came to him and is currently ‘“in storage” for use at some future time: “You can’t run fast in high heeled shoes.”Dr Stepto will conduct a workshop on Poetry Writing on 31 October. The next meeting of Writers 2000 will take place on Saturday, 25 April in the Inyoni Creek Clubhouse, Rand Aid Complex, corner of Wordsworth and Modderfontein roads, Lyndhurst, at 1.30pm. The guest speaker will be Romy Sommer, a romance writer and the founder and chairperson of ROSA, the Romance writers of SA group.

On Saturday 28 March the Italian Club in Bedfordview played host to an exciting banting market. New and improved, the Bedfordview Banting Market kicked off at 09:00 and wrapped up around 13:00 and was filled to the banting brim with carb- and guilt-free pleasures. From freshly made smoothies and grass-fed biltong to preservative- and sugar-free pesto and cupcakes, the market was abuzz with banting and paleo products. Banting breakfast, pizzas and salads were also available from IL Terrazzo Ristorante. The most intriguing product on the floor was the banting bread in a cup – just add one egg and water, pop it into the microwave for two and a half minutes and voilà, you have instant fresh bread. The market was a huge success; we look forward to the next one!

In what is apparently not an April Fool’s Day joke, it was just announced Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig signed on to star in the Lifetime lm  A Deadly Adoption. Not only is the ink dried for the actors on the TV movie, they already shot the lm in secret and it’s due to air in early summer. The Hollywood Reporter  broke the news. The “dramatic thriller,” as it is described, follows a successful couple who care for a pregnant woman (Jessica Lowndes) in their house before they adopt her unborn child. It’s not long after this, however, when things go awry. The tone of  A Deadly Adoption  is supposedly campy and fun, something of a wink to the type of lms the channel is known to make as they approach their 25th anniversary this summer. The two-hour TV movie is also executive produced by Ferrell, alongside Adam McKay and their Gary Sanchez Productions, with a teleplay by Andrew Steele, the co-creator of IFC’s The Spoils of Babylon, which Wiig and Ferrell also starred in. It is directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, who helmed a variety of shorts on Ferrell and McKay’s Funny or Die.A Deadly Adoption  also comes from Mar Vista Entertainment and National Picture Show.

In addition to writing, Steele also executive produced, as did Sharon Bordas, Fernando Szew and Jessica Elbaum.Coming from this past weekend’s Get Hard, Ferrell has a number of projects in the pipeline or in the works. He stars in James Franco’s  Zeroville, and also soon reprises his role of Mugatu in Zoolander 2, set to be released next year. He also reunited with his  The Other Guys  star Mark Wahlbergin Daddy’s Home, which is currently in production. He also appeared earlier this week as Ron Burgandy at the Roast of Justin Bieber. In addition to this, some other projects his name came attached to include an  untitled Shakespearean comedy,  Russ & Roger Go Beyond and The House, just to name a few.Wiig, meanwhile, soon stars in Welcome to Me, The Diary of a Teenage Girl,  Nasty Baby, The Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards, Masterminds and The Martian. She also appears in the  Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp  mini-series and gives her voice to the R-rated animated lm  Sausage Party. She’ll also soon join her Bridesmaids director Paul Feig in his all-female re-imagining of Ghostbusters.Source: thecelebritycafe.com

Gunmen from the militant Islamist group al-Shabab have killed at least 15 people and taken students hostage at a university in north-eastern Kenya.Reports say 65 others were wounded when gunmen stormed the campus in Garissa. Troops are engaging the gunmen.More than 500 students were still unaccounted for, a minister said. The number of hostages is unclear.Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, said it was holding Christians hostage and freeing Muslims.Hostages from the two groups had been separated, and 15 of the Muslims had already been released, a spokesman for al-Shabab told the BBC.Source: BBC

By Haroon Lorgat

The selection debacle that has been hounding the South African cricket team ever since their return to the country after the Cricket World Cup, took a twist on Tuesday afternoon.Reports alleged that CEO, Haroon Lorgat, had sent Proteas coach Russel Domingo an SMS hours before the team took on New Zealand in the semi-fi nal, making demands on selection of the team that would play later that day.Numerous reports claimed that Lorgat had sent the message at around 01:00, allegedly telling Domingo to choose between certain players.According to EWN, Cricket South Africa took an unusual step, replying to the accusations via a statement:“This is utter nonsense reporting with false allegations being made. There was no SMS, WhatsApp or BBM sent by me to the coach, and why would I want to do that when I know the team was confi rmed and already announced to the players and team management at their usual 6pm team meeting that evening?“Our media policy is not to respond to speculative or false media reports where unnamed sources are quoted, but in this case, due to the damage being caused to the reputation of the Proteas, CSA and individual players soon after a painful exit from the World Cup, I feel it necessary to speak out and make it clear that this report is false.”He added that he wanted to place on record that at no time did he ever speak to any journalist from Beeld, Die Burger or Netwerk 24, despite being quoted in the article. “It is very sad to read such poor and false reports which I believe is no more than an attempt to discredit the Proteas and CSA.“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all South African fans for their fantastic support of our much loved Proteas team and assure fans that we will do our best to build winning teams,” concluded Lorgat.
