Over 3 200 people turned out, proudly dressed in pink, for the Pick ‘n Pay Women’s Walk at FNB stadium on Saturday 11 October in support of breast cancer awareness. The women, with their men and children in tow, came out in their droves, braving the chilly Saturday morning weather in order to support this excellent cause. Thanks to sponsors Pick ‘n Pay and Momentum, all of the proceeds raised from the sale of entries went directly to the breast cancer awareness organization, PinkDrive, which provides free breast cancer screenings and education to women around the country. At the Walk Village, which also serves as the start and finish point of the walk, financial wellness giant Momentum offered walkers free preventative health examinations such as blood pressure and cholesterol tests, while PinkDrive provided free breast examinations to participants. The ever-popular Loyiso Bala put in a special appearance to entertain the crowds, ensuring this was a memorable day for all.

On 14 October, tragedy struck Alberton when a truck from Benusi Cargo Carriers crashed into multiple vehicles on the N12 East near Voortrekker Road. Forty eight cars were involved in the accident, which was described as a horror crash. Two people died on the scene and two more were confirmed dead in hospital, bringing the total death toll to four people. Critically injured patients urgently requiring advanced life support were airlifted by a medical helicopter to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for medical treatment. The remaining patients were treated for their injuries and transported to nearby hospitals. The driver of the truck, which was carrying building material from Potchefstroom to Germiston, told local authorities that his brakes had failed, causing him to collide with multiple vehicles.Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Dr Ismail Vadi visited the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where three of the critically injured victims from the horrific crash are being treated.Dr. Liezel Taylor, who was on duty when the crash took place, told the media that one of the patients had to undergo three operations within the first 24 hours after the crash and was on a ventilator after sustaining injuries to the chest, heart and lungs. Another patient was admitted with heavy bleeding on the head and suffered internal bleeding to the liver and chest - the patient had undergone two operations since being admitted shortly after the crash. The third patient had suffered fractures to the arm and was expected to undergo brain scans, but he was in a stable condition and alert.“This was one of the worst accidents in our province,” Dr Vadi said. “This cannot be described as an accident, it was a horrible crash,” he said. Dr Vadi continued to say that the Roads and Transport Department will now push their

road safety campaign even harder. “Truck overloading and mechanical problems are a major problem in the private sector and we will toughen up on the freight industry,” he said during a media briefing. The driver appeared at Palm Ridge Court on Thursday on four counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving. State Prosecutor John Ntuli brought to light the fact that the driver has previous convictions: culpable homicide in 1999, and reckless and negligent driving in 1997.The 44-year-old accused was arrested in Potchefstroom on Wednesday. The lawyers representing the driver, Gerhard Louw and Deon van Staden, told the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court that they had not received instruction to proceed with the case after his appearance on Thursday, and withdrew. The case has been postponed until 22 October and the accused now has time to present his bail application and apply for legal aid representation.Magistrate Hlubi said that the State is expected to compile all neccessary information for the bail application to proceed. The accused will remain in custody. The City of Ekurhuleni is calling on truck owners with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500 kg and more to visit its testing stations for free vehicle assessments. This campaign is open for the entire month of October to mark National Transport Month. The participating testing stations include those in Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Germiston, Boksburg and Kempton Park. The free testing campaign seeks to curb fatal road accidents that occur as a result of unroadworthy vehicles.Owners of taxis and buses are also encouraged to do the test, which involves the checking of tyres, brakes, hand-brakes, steering mechanisms and the general condition of vehicles. The MMC for Transport, Clr Thumbu Mahlangu, encourages all public transport

operators to visit the City’s designated testing stations in order to be informed about the roadworthy status of their vehicles so that corrective measures can be taken, and so that they can ultimately prevent deadly accidents.Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr. Mondi Gungubele also commented on the crash, saying:

“I sincerely hope that the trucking companies will accept our gesture of free assessment for their vehicles with the mass of 3 500kg and above. This is our attempt to minimise accidents like the one - we are still trying to recover from which happened in Alberton last Tuesday. Together we can minimise accidents and loss of life on our roads.”

Blatant contravention of by-laws in the Germiston CBD prompted the Ekurhuleni Municipality to crack down on the area on Thursday 9 October from 9:00 to 13:00. Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan’s application to interdict Radovan Krejcir’s legal team from going through his cellphone records was granted by the High Court in Johannesburg on Monday 13 October. The interdiction was in response to the application of Krejcir’s lawyers to read the reports of Krejcir’s cellphone records. O’Sullivan believes that the application was brought forward with the exclusive purpose of delaying the case and extending the time before a judgement could be delivered. The cellphone records, received after Krejcir’s cellphone company was subpoenaed, contain all of his telephonic communications from June 2013 to February 2014. O’Sullivan, National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, Detective Colonel Nkosana “Killer” Ximba, and crime intelligence boss Chris Ngcobo all had subpoenas served on

them by Krejcir’s lawyers. The lawyers were seeking all the documentation which reportedly led Phiyega to order the arrest of Krejcir and one of his co-accuseds, Desai Luphondo, in November.Kejcir and his co-accused are standing trial on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and dealing in drugs.

Interdiction against Krejcir succeedsIt is with a sad heart that we at Diagnos-tic Radiological Ser-vices (DRS) pay our respects to the late Dr Jennifer Butters. On the afternoon of 2 October, we received

the news of Dr Butters’ murder that occurred at her home in Donegal Avenue, Parkview. She was stabbed in the neck by unknown perpetrators and bled to death on the scene. According to security company ADT, they received a panic alarm from the house and rushed to the scene. Dr Butters was barely alive when they arrived and bled out from her neck wound. It was like a shock wave through the practice and made us realize just how fragile our humanity is. Dr Butters was only 55 and was a very energetic, reli-gious person who disliked unfairness in any form. She had contributed many years to the practice of Radiology and was well liked by

her colleagues. One of her two dogs was also stabbed in the ear and both dogs have subsequently been adopted by her close colleague Dr Aphro-dite Gogakis. No signs of forced entry were noted and no valuable items seemed to be missing from the home – the reason for the attack is still unknown and the police investi-gation is ongoing. This violent senseless act has left us flabbergasted in the absence of Dr Butters. Dr Butters’s Memorial Service took place on Friday 10 October at the Wesleyan Church in Craighall Park at 18:30 and was well attend-ed by family, close friends and many fellow colleagues. She leaves behind her brother.Dr Butters worked mainly at the Linksfield and Bedfordview branches of the DRS prac-tice and her unnecessary death has left a big hole in our hearts. We will miss you dearly, Dr Butters, and pray that you are now safely in God’s arms.

DRS pays tribute to Dr Butters

Local designer Jacques Van Der Watt from Black Coffee partnered with crafters from Ekurhuleni to create his Autumn/Winter 2015 female clothing collection: Figment. His brand-new collection was revealed on the debut night of SA Fashion Week, which was held at the Crowne Plaza in Rosebank. Figment is Black Coffee’s first collection under his diffusion line: Black by Black Coffee. This collection was sponsored by the City of Ekurhuleni and launched as part of the SA Fashion Week Fusion Project - which aims to merge local craft and fashion design: “The accessories were crafted

in a series of workshops held over the last two months with Black Coffee and members of the Ekurhuleni community. Techniques include wire work, crochet, hand painting, leather finishes and beading - all under the direction and mentorship of designer Jacques van der Watt. They will be produced on an ongoing basis, providing local crafters with a steady income stream,” the Black Coffee website reads. This season Van der Watt integrated warm fur and fluff materials with layers of soft, earthy materials. Indigo, black, brown, crème, beige and grey were popular colours running throughout his collection. Patterns were a recurring theme and motif in Figment - chequered 3-D blocks, sparrows, smeared eye-shapes, and images of trees and sky were integrated into almost all of his

designs. Apart from the creative flair that consumers normally associate with Black

Coffee, this collection showcased items that are indeed wearable for any occasion, not just for making fashion statements. The local collaboration between Van der Watt and Ekurhuleni crafters made it a valuable local production. Figment items will be available in stores from February next year.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It affects women of all races, and usually affects women in their 50s and 60s. However, in women who have a genetic predisposition or family history, it can present much earlier in life. Although it is rare in men, they can develop breast cancer too. According to American statistics (SEER database), approximately 12.3% of women (1 in 8) will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lifetime, based on 2009-2011 data.It is relatively easy to diagnose breast cancer. It almost always presents with a mass in the breast, discovered by the patients usually. Occasionally nipple and skin changes can occur such as dimpling, tethering, redness or swelling. Sometimes it can present with a mass or a gland in the armpit too, so do not forget to check the armpit. Mammography screening can also pick up suspicious breast masses. Confirmatory tests include a mammogram and ultrasound of the breasts, followed by a biopsy of the breast mass. After a diagnosis of breast cancer, your gynaecologist or general practitioner will refer you for further specialist care. A multi-disciplinary team approach is the norm nowadays and the team usually involves breast surgeons, plastic surgeons for breast reconstructions, radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists, and supportive staff such as counsellors and physiotherapists for lymphoedema management (swelling of the arm after surgery). Following a diagnosis of breast cancer, which is always very distressing for any woman, the next step, which is the most important, is to determine the stage of the breast cancer. Staging tests are usually blood tests and X-rays. The treatment of breast cancer depends largely on the stage of the breast cancer.

There are four stages of breast cancer. Stages 1 and 2 are called early breast cancer. They are usually managed by surgery first, followed by an assessment with your medical oncologist to discuss the need for risk reduction to decrease future recurrences with systemic treatment, and the need for further local control with radiotherapy. These treatments after surgery are called adjuvant treatments.Stage 3 breast cancer is sometimes called locally advanced disease. Your breast surgeon and medical oncologist usually work together to control the breast cancer first and stop it from spreading further, followed by surgery and radiotherapy. When the breast cancer has spread beyond the breast and local lymph glands, we call

it Stage 4 disease. Spreading of the breast cancer is called metastasis and the usual sites of spreading are the bones, lungs, liver and brain. Stage 1 and 2 breast cancers carry the best prognosis. Stage 3’s prognosis is intermediate and Stage 4’s is poor. Therefore, early detection and early treatment is the key to surviving breast cancer. Women aged 50 and older should have a mammogram screening every two years. Women should also perform breast self-examination, starting in their 20s. If you find a suspicious lump or notice other breast changes, get them checked out.

The treatment of breast cancer can be divided into local treatment and systemic treatment. Local treatment consists of surgery and radiotherapy. Systemic treatment usually means chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and other novel therapy such as Herceptin. Systemic treatment is usually discussed with you by a medical oncologist, either to decrease the risk of recurrence, or to treat metastatic disease. In terms of surgery, there are two types of surgery. If all the breast tissue is removed, we called it a mastectomy. If the cancer is removed with part of a breast, we called it a lumpectomy or a breast-conserving surgery. Choosing either a mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery will depend on the stage of the breast cancer and the location of the breast cancer in the breast. The choice of surgery will be guided by your surgeon.Plastic surgery is becoming increasingly important in breast cancer aftercare. Reconstruction of the breast can be achieved with either a prosthesis or with your own tissue. Each method has its pros and cons and every patient is different. To summarize, breast cancer is a common disease affecting all women equally. The multidisciplinary approach is now the norm. Although receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer is extremely distressing, there is plenty of help around. Remember to ask about the patient support group at your doctor’s room - you do not have to feel alone. Finally, awareness and early detection will result in earlier treatment, with good outcomes.

St Benedict’s hosted the fourth IT showcase on Tuesday 30 September. The event provides an opportunity for top IT students across the country to showcase their final projects as well as to compete for prizes. This year saw 24 competitors split across the two categories of gaming and real world problems. Six judges from top academic and professional institutions judged the projects and were again extremely impressed with the high quality of code that was on display.Three learners entered from St Benedict’s, Graeme Harris, Stirling Scholes and Jason Schutz. Jason’s game

proved to be very popular with the spectators and was played well into the closing stages of the event. Stirling coded an educational sailing game and he made it into the Top 10 projects as well as receiving the prize for Most Advanced Coding for the advanced physics coded into his game. Graeme, the first Grade 11 entrant ever, was the overall winner of the event with his game Room 101: a rogue-like, randomly generated shooter.
