“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…” JOHN 3:16

Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have to pay to receive your love and forgiveness? Are you generous with your time, skills, money and possessions? If you give someone something, do you expect something in re-turn? Do you give your time freely or do you “fit it in” when it’s convenient for you? God desires a personal relationship with us so much that He gave us His Son, unconditionally! Pray for a grateful and generous heart.

The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

Holy Spirit, I ask You for the gift of Wisdom to better know You and Your divine perfections, for the gift of

Understanding to clearly discern the spirit of the mysteries of the holy faith, for the gift of Council that I

may live according to the principles of this faith, for the gift of Knowledge that I may look for council in You, for the gift of Fortitude that no fear or earthly preoccupations would ever separate me from You, for the gift of Piety that I may always serve Your Majesty with a filial love, for the gift of Fear of the Lord that I may dread sin, which offends You, Oh my God.

Saint Barnabas, Apostle Feast Day - June 11

Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus, comes as close as anyone outside the Twelve to being a full-fledged apostle. He was closely associated with Saint Paul—he introduced Paul to Peter and the other apostles—and served as a kind of mediator between the former persecutor and the still suspicious Jewish Christians.

When a Christian community developed at Antioch, Barnabas was sent as the official representative of the church of Jerusalem to incorporate them into the fold. He and Paul instructed in Antioch for a year, after which they took relief contributions to Jerusalem.

Later Paul and Barnabas, now clearly seen as charismatic leaders, were sent by Antioch officials to preach to the gentiles. Enormous success crowned their efforts. After a miracle at Lystra, the people wanted to offer sacrifice to them as gods—Barnabas being Zeus, and Paul, Hermes—but the two said, “We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God” (see Acts 14:8-18).

But all was not peaceful. They were expelled from one town, they had to go to Jerusalem to clear up the ever-recurring controversy about circumcision, and even the best of friends can have differences. When Paul wanted to revisit the places they had evangelized, Barnabas wanted to take along his cousin John Mark, author of the Gospel, but Paul insisted that since Mark had deserted them once, he was not fit to take along now. The disagreement that followed was so sharp that Barnabas and Paul separated: Barnabas taking Mark to Cyprus, Paul taking Silas to Syria. Later they were reconciled—Paul, Barnabas and Mark.

When Paul stood up to Peter for not eating with gentiles for fear of his Jewish friends, we learn that “even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy” (see Galatians 2:1-13).

Reflection Barnabas is spoken of simply as one who dedicated his life to the Lord. He was a man “filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. Thereby, large numbers were added to the Lord.” Even when he and Paul were expelled from Antioch in Pisidia—modern-day Turkey—they were “filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.”

St. Cecilia's hosted the food pantry distribution on May 14th, using "social distancing" to protect our patrons. Thank you to Father Kevin and Mike and Susan Waldoch for representing our church. We donated 130 pounds of supplies from St Cecilia's.

The day went well and we served 70 families.

Hosting the pantry for the month of June will be Seventh Day Adventist church of Harvey.

I will be taking all supplies collected to the pantry on Tuesday, June 9th after the noon Mass. If anyone would like to help, please let me know.

Once again, thank you all for your generous donations. Each item is very much appreciated! God Bless!

NOTICE: The St. Cecilia & St. Anthony cemetery trimmers respectfully request that all artificial flowers be removed from in front/back of the mon-uments by June 12th.

Fr. Kevin - Trinity Sunday Exodus 24:2-6,8-9; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; John 3:16-18

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

John 3:16 is perhaps the most beloved text in all of the sacred scriptures. It has been said that this verse is the very essence of the gospel. This verse teaches us three important things. It teaches us first that it all begins with God. It is God who created everything. If not for God’s action of creating there would be nothing but God. In creating humanity, knowing full well that we would break our relationship with God, God initiated the plan to save all of humanity. When God created the human race God already knew that one day He would send us Son to redeem fallen humanity.

Even our awareness of all of this comes from God. We cannot have faith, we cannot know Jesus without God’s initiative for us to come to know him. God chose us to be born. For most of us here, He chose that we would be born into our particular Christian family. He could have born us into a Hindu, or Buddhist, or Muslim family and we would not know His Son. Instead he chose most of us here to be born into a Christian family. He chose us through the waters of baptism, by which, through the power of the Holy Spirit our hearts and minds were opened so that we could come to know and love His Son.

And so the initiative all begins with God. If not for God’s choice, we would not even know Him. This bring us to the second important lesson. He created us out of love, and chose us as His sons and daughters, so that we would know His love.

God’s very essence is love. John, the author of this Gospel knew this well. In his First Letter John wrote the words “God IS love” (1 John 4:8,16). Too often God is seen as a harsh disciplinarian, just watching and waiting to crush us on account of our sin. Furthermore we tend to blame God for all of the suffering, challenges and difficulties of life. In this, God is often seen as distant, aloof, and uncaring. This could never be further from the truth.

The truth of the matter is this; while God has the right to judge us, because He has chosen us as His sons and daughters, God judges us with the fullness of His mercy. After all, if God IS love, then God is also mercy, for, as St John Paul said, “mercy is the second name of love.”

Furthermore God does not punish us for our sins. As it has been said sin is its own punishment. Why? Because sin separates us from God. God does not turn His back on us; rather we turn our back on God. Even eternal damnation is not God’s judgment. Rather, it is our choice. If we willfully choose the way of sin that separates us from God, and if we are not sorry for this, then our eternal damnation will be our choice.

Here it is important to note the lesson from John 3:17, “For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved

Continued on page 5

Continued from page 4

through him.” Now it is true that Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father from where He judges the living and the dead. Our Lord’s judgment brings together the two important attributes of mercy and justice. God is both merciful and just, and therefore judges us with these two attributes.

God has forgiven us our sins through the death of His son. This is God’s mercy. Therefore, God has the right to expect us to atone for our sins; to make amends for the ways in our choices and failures have brought damage to the world. This is God’s justice.

We experience God’s mercy and justice each time we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we confess and express sorrow for our sins, we are granted God’s mercy through absolution. We then go and perform our penance as an atonement, a way to make right that which we have wronged through our sin. While the penance is usually fairly simple (a few prayers or an act of love) if our sin has seriously hurt someone we probably need to go further to rectify the situation. To do this, God will give us all of the grace and mercy we need to make right that which we have wronged.

This brings us to our final judgment and the necessity of purgatory. The souls in purgatory have accepted the Lord’s mercy and are on their way to heaven. They know, however, that in their failures they have left some “unfinished business” in this world. And so they are accepting their suffering on behalf of those whom they should have loved but rather have hurt through their failure or sin.

If you think about it, this is absolutely beautiful -- to suffer for those whom we love. This is a natural part of our human relationships. Good parents are willing to suffer for their children, accepting the heartache and disappointment when their children are misbehaving; sometimes sacrificing comfort because their children are in need, or sleep when their children are in distress. When a family member, a friend or a neighbor is dying, we give of our time in order to be with them in their struggle. And so, to suffer for the sake of those whom we love is a natural part of our human existence. And if you think about it, this is another way in which we are created in God’s image. God suffered for those whom He loved. And God still suffers with His people whom He loves.

This brings us to the final lesson to be learned from John 3:16, “GOD so LOVED the WORLD ...” This speaks to us of the breadth of God’s love. “It was not a nation; it was not the good people; it was not only the people who loved him; it was the world” that God so love. God loves “the unlovable and the unlovely, the lonely who have no one else to love them, the (one) who loves God and the (one) who never thinks of him, the (one) who rests in the love of God and the (one) who spurns it -- all are included in this vast inclusive love of God” (italicized portion taken from Barclay on John 3:16).

As St Augustine said: “God loves each one of us as if there was only one of us to love.” Pray for the grace to know God’s love and mercy. Pray for the grace to live God’s love and mercy and for others.
