The Fourteen Holy Helpers is a title given to the fourteen saints of our church. They are regarded as ancient saints, some of whom died as early as the year 95. There was a devotion to the Fourteen Holy Helpers as early 1348 at an altar in St. Peter’s Church in Munich, Germany. Because they are the patron saints against a variety of diseases, they were called upon for help dur-ing the Black Plague epidemic in Europe from 1346 to 1349. The Fourteen Holy Helpers usually appear in pictures with the Blessed Virgin who is also known as Queen of Martyrs and

Queen of All Saints. They are invoked as a group because of the Black Plague which devastated Eu-rope from 1346 to 1349. Among the symptoms were tongue turning black, a parched throat, violent headache, fever, and boils on the abdomen. It attacked without warning, robbed its victims of reason, and killed within a few hours; many died without the last Sacraments. Brigands roamed the roads, people sus-pected of contagion were attacked, animals died, people starved, whole villages vanished into the grave, social order and family ties broke down, and the disease appeared incurable. The pious turned to Heaven, begging for intervention of the saints, praying to be spared or cured. This group devotion began in Germany, and tradition has remained strong there. A group of saints invoked with special confidence because they have proven themselves efficacious helpers in adversity and difficulties, known and venerated under the name Fourteen Holy Helpers. Though each has a separate feast or memorial day, the group was collectively venerated on August 8th. However, this feast was dropped and suppressed in the 1969 reform of the calendar. An Explanation of the Martyrs During the early years of the Christian Church, many people did not believe in Jesus. Some of these people were in positions of over the lives of others. Because these people, such as the Emperor Diocletian, did not believe in Jesus, they want-ed all Christians to say that Jesus was not really the Son of God. The early mar-tyrs refused to say they did not believe in Jesus, and so these were put to death. These Christians were martyrs by giving their lives for the love of Christ. The word Martyr comes from the Greek language. It means, “witness”. A person may be a martyr (witness) to faith by living according to the word of God, to show how people can believe in Jesus and live happily. People can be a martyr (witness) by telling others about Jesus and His ministry of love and service. We can be martyrs (witnesses) by being of service to others with kindness, sharing, and love. And, we can be martyrs by our gratitude for the goodness and mercy of Jesus in our lives. The names of the Fourteen Holy Helpers are: St. Achatius: May 8th – Head-aches; St. Barbara: Dec. 4th – Fever – Sudden death; St. Blaise : Feb. 3rd – Ills of the throat; St. Catherine of Alexandria: Nov. 25th – Sudden death St. Christopher: July 25th – Plagues – Sudden death; St. Cyriacus Aug. 8th – Temptations; St. Denis (Dionysius): Oct. 9th – Headaches; St. Erasmus (Elmo): June 2nd – Abdominal maladies; St. Eustachius (Eustace): Sep. 20th – Family trouble; St. George: Apr. 23rd – Protection of domestic ani-mals; St. Giles (Aegidius): Sep.1st – Plagues – Good Confession; St. Margaret of Antioch: July 20th – Safe childbirth; St. Pantaleone: July 27th – Physicians; St. Vitus (St. Guy): June 15th – Epilepsy

Stewardship Moment August 7, 2016 – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” – Luke 12:34

Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encour-ages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treasure?

How much time are you investing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this world.

Dear Friends and Family, My dream of writing individually to every-one who gave me gifts for Ordination has been chal-lenged by the sheer number of people who have sent something. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for the outpouring of support. A vocation to the priesthood would not be possible without your help and your prayers.

Ordination to the priesthood has already been a wonderful gift. I am grateful to God and I do thank him for all of you. With some of the gifts that I received, I have been able to purchase a few things that I have needed for the priesthood. I was also able to make a little vacation up to Montreal Canada and spend some time there. Over the next several years I will likely need to invest in a vehicle, so you gifts will help with that as well. I am now settling well into Jamestown and life here at the Basilica is starting to pick up and increase. I think it is going to work out well. Before too long we will be busy with the advent of the school year where I will start teach-ing for about 3 days a week. We also have 3 other missions, in Windsor, Buchanan, and Pingree. We have three nursing homes where we say Mass and will likely add a fourth one to our list in the fall as a large new facility is open-ing at that point. It is really something special to be present and able to celebrate the Mass for people. I am not quite sure that anything really prepares a person well to do this. Yet it is also a gift that I find calling to me to be a better man and to learn to be a better priest. I have already had the chance to hear a number of confessions and to confer the Anointing of the Sick. Soon the first Baptisms, Marriages and maybe even a Confirmation or two will begin to happen. This is the new adventure of learning and growing that I am embarking on now. You are all special to me and you all remain in my prayers. I have al-ready included you and your intentions in several Masses that I have celebrated and will continue to do so. If you would like me to offer Mass for you or for your intentions, please feel free to write me at the Basilica. I have not had too many mass intentions yet, so I have room in my schedule for quite a few. An additional Thank You for the Holy Family Society and all who helped make my first Mass possible. It was a wonderful celebration!

In the end, may God abundantly bless all of you and keep you in his peace. In Christ Father Robert Keller

"When the Sisters are

Real Presence Radio will host a Holy Doors of Mercy pilgrimage Oct. 10 - 14, 2016, to Holy Doors of Mercy sites in Bismarck, Richardton, Rapid City & Denver. Dakota with pick-up sites in Fargo, Valley City, Jamestown, Bismarck & Dickinson and $575 from Rapid City, SD. The deadline to register is Sept. 1st or until filled. To register call Lisa at 1-877-795-0122 or email [email protected].

Once again St. Cecilia's Parish is collecting school supplies for the grade school teachers to have on hand for use in their class-rooms. We've also been asked to collect some clothing items for the Kindergarten and First Grade classes.

Here are the items they need: 1. All school supplies, such as paper, notebooks, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, etc. (EXCEPT Backpacks and rulers, which they al-ready have a lot of!) 2. Extra gloves, caps, hats and snowpants 3. Extra pants and t-shirts (in Good condition, without stains or tears) and NEW underwear and socks for grades K and 1 (since children do have accidents and don't always have clean, dry clothes to put on).

We would like to have these items collected and taken to the school as soon as possible, so this collection of school supplies and emergency clothing will only continue until the last weekend in August. However, the collection of hats and mittens for cold weather will continue to the end of September. PLEASE-- NO big bags or boxes of clothing! Save them for the rummage sale this winter!

Thank you in advance for your generous help.
