On May 1st Pope Francis reconsecrated the United States under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As is the custom during May all the faithful are encouraged to pray the rosary. The Holy Father has composed the following prayer to conclude the Rosary during the Month of May.

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

“Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Litany for our times!

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. God the Father of heaven – have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world – have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit – have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God – have mercy on us. Holy Mary, Mother of God – pray for us. Saint Joseph – intercede for the dying. Saint Michael – protect first responders and those in danger. Saints Cosmas and Damian, holy physicians – assist healthcare workers. Saints Peter and Paul – help our bishops and keep them in health. Saint John Vianney – help our priests and keep them in health. Saint Stephen – help our deacons and keep them in health. Saint Thomas More – obtain wisdom and grace for our civic leaders. Saint Sebastian – ask God to end this pandemic swiftly. All you holy angels and saints – pray that we may one day join your number. Amen

One day at a time—This is enough, do not look back at the past, for it is gone; And do not be troubled about the future, for it is yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.

We encourage our parishioners to patronize our bulletin sponsors. It is through their generosity that our weekly bulletin comes to you at no publishing cost.

“For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil.” 1 PETER 3:17

The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning and making sure things are progressing smoothly. Then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended or an unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond nega-tively and ask, “Why me? I did everything right!” Here’s the thing – adversity humbles us and reminds us of our dependence on God and not on our own self-reliance. Rest assured, God has a better plan in store for you.

Congratulations Class of 2020 Our graduating seniors from St. Cecilia’s parish.

Fr. Kevin - 6th Sunday of Easter - Cycle A – 2020+ Acts 8:14-17; 1I Peter 3:15-18; John 14:15-21

Have you ever been given a gift too complicated for you to use? Unless we read the instructions or someone takes time with us to

explain how to use the gift, it may just stay in our closet for years in an unopened box.

Unfortunately that is the very case with many Catholics who do not practice their faith. They have been given the gift of membership in the Catholic Church as infants. They know they are Catholics, but they don't know what that means. Unless they take the initiative to read something about their faith, or unless someone takes the time to sit down and explain it to them, the gift of faith remains largely "unopened."

Kabir, a fifteenth-century poet in India, gives us a key to opening the gift of faith: "He understands who loves." This poet was saying that we can come to understand another person if we first love that person. The same principle applies to our relationship with God. If we truly want a relationship with God, we must first love God. If we desire to love God, we begin asking ourselves why we should love God. To that question we can find a whole "catechism" of answers!

We love God because God first loved us. God first showed us this love in creating us and later proved it by dying on the cross for us. God manifests love in all the sacraments of the Church and promises us the fullness of love in eternal life.

All God asks in return from us is love. Looking at our faith from this perspective helps us to see that faith is not too complicated a gift for us at all.

Now the thing about God loving us, and us loving God, is that God’s love cannot simply be seen as an emotion. In human terms we tend to limit love to the dimension of feeling. Feeling is an important part of love. But love cannot be reduced to a feeling, for love is also an action, a commitment, a choice. Therefore it is important to acknowledge the different kinds of love.

First there is the love that a man and woman have for one another; a love which motivates them to share the most intimate physical part of themselves. We call this erotic love.

Secondly, there is the love that a parent has for a child, or a child for a parent; the love that siblings have for one another; the same love that friends have for one another. You might call this familial or brotherly love.

Thirdly, there is the love that gives totally of self; a love in which one chooses the well-being of the other over self. This love is the completion of the other loves and is called sacrificial love. This is a love with no strings attached – which expects nothing in return. This is the love that God has for us; a love in which God literally laid down his life for us – not because we deserve it – but simply because God loves us.

Continued on page 5

"I think a smile generates a smile, just as love generates love." St. Teresa of Calcutta

Parish Family Prayer List: Marcia Schneider, Donnie Schmidt, Mandy Hoyt,

Linda Belgarde & for all our homebound & caregivers.

Continued from page 4

In all of these loves though there is much more than just emotion happening. There is also commitment. This is really the dimension of love that Jesus teaches us. Because God has loved us, God is the first to have made the commitment to love. Our response to love God in return is our commitment.

What this means then is that Christian love is not a feeling. Christian love is a choice. Either we choose to love someone, or we choose not to love someone. Jesus taught us that the greatest love is shown when we lay down our lives for one another. This choice to love tends to come naturally and relatively easily. Oh we may not always like the things our family members do, but we still love them in spite of the things they may say and the choices they may make.

Therefore, the real test of Christian faith is when we choose to love someone whom we feel does not deserve our love.

The stranger we meet on the street, the homeless person asking for a handout, the homosexual man dying of AIDS, the teenager involved in gang violence, the convicted rapist on death row.

These are extreme examples of people that we are called to love. As Christians, why do we have to love these people? We have to love them because God loves them. Here are some examples a little closer to home. Jesus wants us to love: The crabby old lady who lives next door, the alcoholic who has made a mess of his family and his life, that family member who has said or done something that has hurt us, the person who just can't wait to spread the latest gossip, the neighbor who never goes to church.

Jesus came that all people might be saved. He did not come only for those people whom we find easy to love. He came also for those who are hard to love. And in the example he gave us by his life he expects the same of you and me.

So today, in this Eucharist, this "banquet of love" that Christ has given to, let us pray that we may be lovers in the name of the Lord. Let us search our hearts and first thank God for the gift of love he has revealed to us by the life, death and resurrection of his only beloved Son. Let us also thank God for the gift of love given us in our spouses, our families and our friends. Then let us ask God to open our hearts that we might love those whom we find difficult to love.

Beloved, let us love one another, as the Father has loved us.
