September 8 - Feast of the Nativity of Mary

Birth of Mary On Our Lady's birthday the Church celebrates the first

dawning of redemption with the appearance in the world

of the Savior's mother, Mary. The Blessed Virgin occu-

pies a unique place in the history of salvation, and she has

the highest mission ever commended to any creature. We rejoice that the Moth-

er of God is our Mother, too. Let us often call upon the Blessed Virgin as

"Cause of our joy", one of the most beautiful titles in her litany.

Since September 8 marks the end of summer and beginning of fall, this day has

many thanksgiving celebrations and customs attached to it. In the Old Roman

Ritual there is a blessing of the summer harvest and fall planting seeds for this

day. The winegrowers in France called this feast "Our Lady of the Grape Har-

vest". The best grapes are brought to the local church to be blessed and then

some bunches are attached to hands of the statue of Mary. A festive meal which

includes the new grapes is part of this day.

In the Alps section of Austria this day is "Drive-Down Day" during which the

cattle and sheep are led from their summer pastures in the slopes and brought to

their winter quarters in the valleys. This was usually a large caravan, with all

the finery, decorations, and festivity. In some parts of Austria, milk from this

day and all the leftover food are given to the poor in honor of Our Lady’s

Nativity.

Excerpted from The Holyday Book by Fr. Francis Weiser, SJ

Patron: All people named Mary, in any form.

Prayer to Maria Bambina (Baby Mary)

Hail, Infant Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou forever, and blessed are thy holy parents Joachim and Anne, of whom thou was miraculously born. Mother of God, intercede for us. We fly to thy patronage, holy and amiable Child Mary, despise not our prayers in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers, glorious and blessed Virgin.

V. Pray for us, holy Child Mary.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us Pray: O almighty and merciful God, Who through the cooperation of the Holy Ghost, didst prepare the body and soul of the Immaculate Infant Mary that she might be the worthy Mother of Thy Son, and didst preserve her from all stain, grant that we who venerate with all our hearts her most holy childhood, may be freed, through her merits and intercession, from all uncleanness of mind and body, and be able to imitate her perfect humility, obedience and charity. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

will be hosting a conference for all men at the

University of Mary, McDowell Activity Center.

Registration is required for an accurate meal count. www.bismarckdioccese.com

Guest Speakers include His Eminence Francis Cardinal George,

Tom Peterson and Fr. Russell Kovash.

The event is FREE and open to men of all ages. Bring your fathers, sons,

grandsons, brothers, nephews, friends ... All the men in your life!

Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known

that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise

not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

PLEDGE YOUR VOTE on the weekend of Sept. 13 & 14.

Measure #1: Yes on 1

North Dakota voters will have an opportunity to enact the

proposed Human Life Amendment this November. The

proposed constitutional amendment states: “the inalienable right to life of every

human being at any stage of development must be recognized and protected.”

A bipartisan majority of the state legislature put the proposed amendment on the

ballot and it will appear on the November ballot as Measure 1.

Bishop John T. Folda of Fargo, and Bishop David D. Kagen of Bismarck fully

endorse the amendment and are asking for your help. Pro-life residents of North

Dakota who are of voting age will have an opportunity on PLEDGE YOUR

VOTE on the weekend of Sept. 13 & 14 to complete an absentee ballot appli-

cation. It is important that voters apply early to ensure they receive a ballot in

the mail after Sept. 25. We want to make sure that every “Yes on Measure 1”

vote is cast and counted. By voting as an absentee, you guarantee that your

support for Measure 1 will be counted and “in the bank.” It will give a big boost

to our campaign, and be a relief to you knowing that nothing can come up on

Election Day that might prevent you from getting to the polls to cast your ballot.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are the Creator of all life. Guide our efforts as

we strive to promote the Human Life Amendment in North Dakota. Give wisdom

to the campaign leaders. Call forth volunteers in all communities across our

state to serve the needs of the campaign with courage and generosity. Open the

hearts and minds of citizens to embrace the truth and to recognize that all

human life comes from you and is worthy of our respect and protection. We ask

this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Special Collection September 13 & 14, 2014

Archbishop Kurtz, President of the USCCB, has asked that a

special collection be taken up to provide for humanitarian

relief and pastoral support for our affected brothers and

sisters in the Middle East. Bishop Folda has asked all parishes in the diocese

to partake in the special collection.

The funds will be used by Catholic Relief Services and other Catholic agencies

working in partnership with the local Church to meet the most urgent humanitarian

needs facing the people in Iraq, Gaza, Syria and surrounding countries where

refugees have fled. The organizations have well-established partnerships with the

Catholic Church in the region which allow them to respond quickly and efficiently

to victims in some of the hardest to reach areas. Collection funds will also be used

to support Church programs to aid persecuted Christians and to respond to rebuild-

ing needs of Catholic dioceses in the impacted areas.

Information on CRS humanitarian response in the Middle East can be found at:

crisis/
