  • Stewardship Moment January 8, 2017 – Epiphany of Our Lord

“Then they opened their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” – Matthew 2:11

The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow all year long. In grati-tude for all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be the most generous with that one thing that means the most to us.

January 22 Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children

NOTE: Because January 22 falls on a Sunday in 2017, the designated observance for 2017 is Monday, January 23.

"A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up through-out the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impas-sioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian com-munity, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer." Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100*

The over 59 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Un-born Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person commit-ted through acts of abortion.”

As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Follow-

ing are some resources for parishes to use to observe the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children: 9 Days for Life: January 21-29, 2017

Taken from the Jan. 1, 2017 Parish bulletin of Corpus Christi, Bismarck:

As we pack away the tinsel. The Christmas world can be an unreal, flimsy, make-believe world. Our tree, our Santa, artifi-cial snow, decorations and lights are so many stage props. When we pack these away, we are likely to put the spirit too,

in a box and label it, “For Christmas only.” As you pack, pause to recall the community of worship, the beauty of the sanctuary, resounding carols and majestic music. Think on the Christmas spirit of prayer, instead of tinsel, crepe paper and holly. You can pack away the joyous love of the Christ Child or hang it on the door of your heart for every one to see dai-ly. It’s up to you. A better resolution. Let us all resolve: First to attain the grace of silence. Second to deem excessive fault finding a sin. To choose when we are happy ourselves not to poison the atmosphere for our neighbors by call-ing on them to remark every painful and disagreeable feature of their dai-ly life. Third to practice the grace and virtue of praise
