Blessings,
Summer is upon us which means manythings warmer weather, longer days, schoolis out, programming schedules change, lots of
our youth and children will be heading out to Bethany HillsCamp in the coming weeks, and many families will leave on
vacation. I am reminded of a story a colleague once toldme. He was standing at the back door of his church the lastSunday of May and a family walked out and said, "Well, we'llsee you in the fall!" Don't forget, schedules may change butwe still have worship every week. Here are a few otherupdates worth mentioning.
BACK TO SEWANEE Next week, I will be headingback up to Sewanee for my fourth and final summer ofclasses. Since 2010, I have been working on my Doctor ofMinistry in Preaching with a specific focus on faith andpolitics. This is my last summer of course work and I hope
to finish the degree by next May, 2014. I will be out ofpocket for a few weeks so don't hesitate to call on one of theother ministers if you need something. I am grateful toWoodmont for allowing me to pursue this degree, and I willcertainly be glad when it is completed. This fall, I will becontinuing to work on my thesis that has a specific focus onfaith and politics.
JUNE SERMON SERIES During the month of June, wewill be looking at various passages from Paul's letter to theRomans on Sunday mornings. This is viewed by many asthe greatest Epistle in the New Testament and is a summary
of Paul's theology, a theology that has had a profoundimpact on the Protestant Church. I encourage you to takethe time to read Romans on your own. The June sermonseries on Sunday evenings at the Bridge is called "ToughQuestions," and will explore some of the tough questions offaith. On June 9th, we will welcome Rev. Nathan Brown toguest preach at the Bridge. Years ago, Nathan served as anintern at Woodmont and he is now the Senior Ministerof First Christian Church of Hopkinsville, KY. He and Iwere roommates years ago at TCU and he is beginning hisdoctorate at Sewanee this summer.
WEDNESDAY NIGHTS IN JUNE During the monthof June, we will have our annual gospel sing alongs andWednesday night potlucks. The sing along will be in theGathering Hall at 5:30 p.m. and since we are doing somerenovations to our main kitchen, the dinner at 6:15 will bein Rm. 200 followed by a devotional at 7:00 p.m. I willlead the first devotional on June 5th and will focus on theBeatitudes found in the beginning of the Sermon on theMount.
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING JUNE 16th ThWoodmont Board has now approved the 2013-14 proposeoperating budget. Info and highlights will be coming out ithe Spire. The budget will come before the congregation oSunday, June 16th for final approval. That meeting will b
at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary and we will also be voting othe proposed leadership slate for the new year. Please try tbe there. Installation Sunday for the new board memberelders, and deacons will be on Sunday, June 30th.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL JULY 9-12th VacatioBible School will be held July 9-12th and is for childreages 3 5th grade. We have always had a great turnout foVBS and we expect that again this year. The theme foVBS is "Everywhere Fun Fair" and a number of differenBible stories will be explored. Make sure you sign youchild or grandchild up soon because the deadline i

STAFF TRANSITIONS This summer, we will bmoving forward with the staff transitions that have beeannounced. These will happen during the months oJune and July and be in place by August 1 st. Trey will bon a well-deserved mini-sabbatical during the month oJune. When he returns, he will be a part of VBS and themove up to work with our youth, specifically the CYF. Hwill have oversight of all of our youth and childrenministries. Thom Schuyler will be moving into the role oCollege and Young Adult Minister, working with ou
twenty and thirty-somethings. Justin Gung will be workincloser with our children and families and helping more witcongregational care. Please keep all three of these folks iyour prayers as they transition into their new roles. I havno doubt they will all bring new energy and ideas into eacof these ministries.

Summertime, and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high*
By the time this issue of The Spire arrives in your email ormailbox I will be at Bethany Hills Camp and ConferenceCenter in Kingston Springs, TN with about 90 teenagers and adozen other adults. About fifteen of those teenagers will befrom Woodmont and that makes me very happy! Churchcamp is an irreplaceable opportunity for young people to findfellowship with like-minded youth from across the state, hearand discuss biblical stories and concepts, interact with caringadults and generally set the tone for a summer of abundance.Perhaps more importantly, it is a time when a number ofteenagers sense a calling to some form of ministry within theChurch. In recent decades I have witnessed many kids from
our congregation receive and accept this calling as a directresult of their time at Bethany Hills. Although other factorswere certainly involved, I think it is safe to say that ourcurrent staff includes several ministers whose paths intoministry were positively motivated by summers at churchcamp: Clay Stauffer, Trey Flowers and Tallu Quinn areamong them. Further, our so-called Timothy's individualsthat grew up at Woodmont and followed calls into varioustypes of ministries based, in part, on their time at BethanyHills include Rachel Frey, Elizabeth King, Brad McDowell
and Matthew Smith. It is a rich and profound tradition aone that I trust will continue for decades to come.
As of this moment Woodmont has registered 53 campethroughout the seven camps offered for children K-12 th
summer. In addition, 16 adult members of our congregatiare serving as directors or counselors this year. This issplendid representation and I applaud all of you fsupporting this annual and important ministry. Beyond th"headcount" I would also remind you that Woodmocontributes 50% of every camper's fee to attend these campThat is a marvelous and generous gift from each of you.
So, I have already laid out my camp paraphernalia for tcoming weeks: shorts, tee shirts, flip-flops, sun tan lotioflashlight, sleeping bag, toiletries, bathing suit and Bible (jacket required). I feel like a kid out of school, heading off
a place I love with grand anticipation raising through mbrain and my veins. And you know what? That's exactly whI am
Grateful,xo Tommy Schuyler
