    Youth Group Update

It has been a tremendous blessing to spend time with theyouth in transitioning roles over the last few weeks! Thechurch should take pride in the spiritual depth and Christianleadership offered by our Chi-Rho and CYF students.

Here are a few priorities our team has been working on:

    Scheduling and Programming

One of the most overwhelming aspects of the youthgroup is just how busy students are these days! Sports, extracurricular activities, homework, plays, shows, band, andmore add up to make a stressful and busy week. In a modelsimilar to offering, we are asking students to commit togiving us their first time block rather than their leftovertime by committing to a spiritual oasis each week withWednesday night youth group. Beginning this Wednesday,August 21, we will gather from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with dinnertogether followed by a fun fellowship event, service project, small group time, or youth-led worship service. Additionally, the strong Sunday School program Thom put in place willremain intact but will now be followed each week by lunchand weekly Jubilation choir practice (ending the school yearwith a Jubilation choir tour). CYF senior high students arealso invited to join us for a 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning Biblestudy for girls (1st and 3rd Tuesday) and guys (2nd and 4thTuesday) at Bread and Company in Green Hills. There iscertainly a wide-ranging "menu of options" to find a place toparticipate!

We will also host monthly "bring a friend" special eventsas an entry point to get involved with the youth group. Thefall the lineup includes the pool party kickoff, Ocoee RaftingTrip, Bethany Hills retreats, Thanksgiving progressive dinner, and a winter ski trip. If you have an interest in helping plan orsupporting these events, please let me know. We'd love yourhelp!

    Youth Sponsors

One important component for growing the networkof youth relationships is bringing in adults who regularlycommit to being a part of the youth group experience.Fourteen wonderful adults have committed to giving up theirWednesday nights over the next year by becoming mentorsfor the Chi-Rho and CYF students. Please join me incelebrating our amazing new youth sponsors: CarolineMcDonald, Stephen and Sara Anne Quinn, Kristen Newman,

Jeremiah and Mary Clare Pyron, Katie Johnson, MerilFlowers, John Stauffer, Rob Cochran, Nan George, Dardand Natalie Copeland, and Ben Saunders. Please keep thgroup in your prayers!

    Communication

Youth group has gone digital! All information is noavailable on our new (and regularly updated) website www.WoodmontCCYouth.com and on our new Twitter fe@WoodmontCCYouth. There is also a Google calendlisting all events and activities which you can subscribe through our new website. We are also fully embracing temessage communications with the youth and are in tprocess of setting up text lists to easily and readily remind tyouth about everything going on. If you are a youth famiplease make sure to register for texts and emails by filling othe form on the new youth website.

    Renovations to the Youth Wing

The Woodmont Board and the Finance Committgraciously approved funding to renovate and update oexisting youth wing. We have an incredibly talented team architects, contractors, designers, parents, and youth from ocongregation who are working hard to update our space ovthe next few months. Some of the ideas being considerinclude:

An enlarged space for a youth lounge, worship space, and dining hall

    Dedicated discussion room for Chi-Rho

An entrance and design theme to designate the youth wi

    past the boardroom

New furniture, lighting, games, and coffee/smoothie bar

Incorporation of technology for lessons, movie nights, e

growth and memories that will last a lifetime!

    Dear Woodmont,

Walk as if you are kissing

    the earth with your feet...

I almost chuckle at the thought. How does one kiss theearth with their feet? If anyone could do it, it would certainlybe the gentle monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. It is his very way oflife. Me on the other hand, I fear I pound the earth, lumberingheavy-footed with my humanity. And yet my spirit craves alightness of being.

Thich Nhat Hanh was born on October 11, 1926 inVietnam. He was exiled from his country for thirty-nine yearsbecause of his passionate pleas for peace during the VietnamWar. He studied at Princeton University, has written over 100books and founded the Plum Village monastery in the Southof France. He is best known for his practice of mindfulmeditation. Recently, he led a walking meditation through thestreets of New York City during rush hour proving innerpeace is possible even in the midst of chaos. I have readseveral of his books on prayer and meditation and cannot waitto read his very well-known book, Living Buddha, LivingChristthis summer. They say that a mysterious peace washesover your entire body and spirit when in his presence.

I confess that I struggle with both prayer and meditationin my own spiritual life. I fear I am more a spinning top thankneeling monk. Thich Nhat Hanh believes it is possiblethat all of us, even the spinning tops, can experience the

"Kingdom" here and now. The experience of touching theKingdom is unique for every soul. It can be experienced as anencounter with God in nature, scripture, or prayer, or amoment where we inhabit our humanity with grace ("we kissthe earth with our feet"), or an experience of such immensepeace, beauty, love and divine understanding deep in oursouls that we actually breathe divine breaths. Thich says that

once you have touched the Kingdom you no longer nepower, control, nor desire the material, nor fear death.

I find in my own spiritual life, I often flirt with God bstruggle with surrendering in total union. I call it "flirting wthe Beloved." Thich is a huge believer in the practice mindfulness to bring us to that holy place our soul's desire.is a practice, even an art, of living fully into every singbreath. It requires us to surrender all our "human hang-upWe must let go of our pasts (all the hurts, regrets, aresentments) and step away if only for a breath from our feaof the future, and just live in that place between the inhale athe exhale. It takes some help to get to that place. RecentI have tried this meditation in my attempt to touch tKingdom.

You say three times: I have arrived. I have arrived.

    I have arrived.

Then you say three times: I am home. I am home.

    I'm home.

Home is finding oneself in the embrace of God, the greaam, the Beloved, Love Incarnate.

Every single one of us has a place deep within us, a sacrspace of peace that is unshakable despite what this wothrows at us. The problem is we haven't the courage or thumility to trust in that place, trust in God. When we do stoclose our eyes, and whisper the mantra, I have arrived. I haarrived. I have arrived. I am home. I am home. I am hom

we realize our lives are not as heavy and fragile as we onthought. We can live in the world but not of it; maybe evkiss the earth with our feet. We begin to live more gracefuinto our humanity and understand our holy purpose on thplanet.
