Children’s Christian FormationPentecost CelebrationOn Sunday, May 11 we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost. The congregation dressed in red as we heard the readings in multiple languages and looked for the work of the Holy Spirit all around us. A festive coffee hour followed.

Sunday, May 18 was Trinity Sunday, Recognition Sunday and Communion Sunday for the Second Grade - the culmination of their year long course of study.

Bishop Roskam was our guest on Sunday, June 1 for Confirmation. There were fourteen confirmands, and two members of the Christ Church choir who were received into the Episcopal Church.

July and August look to be a bit quieter, but watch out for September!

MusicPrimary Choir Field TripOn Wednesday May 7th, the Primary Choir went on a field trip to Cantabile Piano Art in Yonkers where they were able to see one of our Steinway grand pianos being refurbished. The piano was sent there in February and was completely disassembled, finish stripped, keys cleaned and rebushed, hammers refelted, and is nearing completion. It will arrive back to Christ Church sometime this summer looking and sounding like a new instrument. The Primary Choir was able to see many pianos in various stages of refurbishing – a less expensive and “green” alternative to buying a new piano.Organ Scholars – A Summer of TransitionWhat is an Organ Scholar after all? Wikepedia would answer: “An organ scholar is a young musician employed as a part-time assistant organist at an institution where regular choral services are held. The idea of an organ scholarship is to provide the holder with playing, directing and administrative experience....Many organ scholars have gone on to notable careers in music and in other fields.”

The one hitch is that anyone we might find worthy for this position would not consider the employment to be indefinite. It is, in fact, a year-long commitment that can be renewed. We have been extremely blessed to have Robert Richter with us for not one, but two years! And now it is time for Robert to move on, to take what he has learned from us and pursue his career full-time. Robert has been called to be the Associate Organist of The Cathedral of All Saints in Albany. We wish him all the best and will remember with fondness the innumerable ways he has contributed to the life of this parish. I am delighted to announce that, beginning in August, Jessica French will assume the position of Robert G.

Owen Organ Scholar. Jessica has recently completed a graduate degree in music from The Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University. For the last year, she has also worked at Trinity Church on the Green (New Haven) as an Assistant Organist. Please extend a warm welcome to Jessica as she begins her ministry here at Christ Church.

Choir RegistrationPre-Registration for all choirs for next year can now be done online! If you are interested in participating in one of our choirs next year please sign up online or contact Christopher Wells at 337-3544x116 or [email protected]. For online registration please visit us at http://www.ccbny.org/music/index.html and click on Choir Registration. It is extremely helpful, for planning purposes, to know how many choristers we expect to see in the fall.

Thank You Seminarians! On Sunday May 4, Christ Church said thank you to departing priest associate Fr. Luke Jernagan and seminarian Delores McKay (fourth and fifth from left, respectively), who this spring completed their studies at General Seminary. Fr. Jernagan will be moving to Florida and serving the people of Christ Church, Ponte Vedra. Delores will be sharing chaplaincy duties at the Wartburg. At the same service, Father Bird announced that Fr. Cody Unterseher (third from left) has been accepted into the seminary’s doctoral program, and has accepted a concurrent position at Christ Church as Theologian-in-Residence. We are delighted that our other seminarian, Jennifer Brown Lanier (third from left), will be returning to CCB again in the fall as she continues her path to ordination. Best wishes to Delores and Luke, congratulations to Cody, and thank you to all our GTS students for your service to CCB and your presence in our lives.

Theater and Theology Class at GTS postponed

Adult Christian Formation

Circle of LightThe Circle of Light is dedicated to peace, healing and interfaith understanding. Our group has been on the move this year, as guests at a women’s seder in April at Mount Sinai Free Synagogue and visitors to the Chuang Yen Monastery in Kent, NY, a Buddhist monastery holding the largest statue of Buddha in Northern America. There we learned about the cultures and traditions of this particular expression of Tibetan Buddhism. Ellen Miret, just back from Dharamsala, the home of the Tibetan government in exile, shared her insights and experiences with us.

Women’s Spirituality Group

Having finished a book by Henri Nouwen, The Women’s Spirituality Group is tackling selected essays by Reinhold Niebhur, one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. Though many of his essays were written decades ago, his insights and theological remain fresh, challenging and astute. Come and learn! Contact Ruth Singleton for more information. Valuing the heart, mind and soul, these groups continue to provide a profound sense of community, and companionship. Many thanks to all the wonderful women who have shared their stories, spiritual hunger and faith.

Progressive Dinner 2008

A big thank you to all the fabulous hosts of our annual Progressive Dinner. Our parishioners were very well entertained at the beautiful homes of the Whitneys, the Woods, the Seirups, the Goodells, the Kelseys, the Frosts, the Taylors and Warren Ilchman. The Nagles once again hosted a wonderful cocktail party on their lawn. We are also grateful to Joy Kilbourn for helping with dessert, and of course to Noel Desmond for everything he does here at Christ Church Bronxville. Thank you to Sarah Kraemer for making this annual event such a success.

Goats for MalawiMo. Malin is returning to Malawi this summer, to lay the groundwork for our Christ Church Bronxville Mission to Malawi, Summer 2009. Check www.ccbny.org after July 5th for more details about Mo. Malin’s trip and our new partnership with the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi and Episcopal Relief and Development to begin a kitchen gardens and animal husbandry project to help villagers grow the food they so desperately need.

To kick off our program, Christ Church’s Mission to Malawi is funding a project promoting sustainable goat production in Chikwawa Parish in Southern Malawi. Goat’s milk is ideal for combating malnutrition and supplementing the diets of people with HIV/AIDS and will become an important revenue stream for the rural poor and their local churches.

Thanks to the generosity of Christ Church Bronxville and our “Goats for Malawi” Father’s Day sponsorship program, we have fully funded two goat sheds in Southern Malawi, including the cost of an experienced agricultural manager to implement the projects and train and oversee the villagers who will run the farms. Mo. Malin will visit Chikwawa and report on our goats in August.

If you did not get the chance to sponsor a goat, but would like to support upcoming kitchen gardens and pastured livestock projects through our partnership in Southern Malawi, please contact contact Kate Malin at [email protected].
