This is the greatest day of theyear for Christians.

Lent is the time when we remember the forty days thatJesus spent alone in the wilderness where he was tempted:"J esus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordanand was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for

forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing atall during those days, and when they were over, he wasfamished" (Luke 4:1-2). There were three basic temptationsthat Jesus had to overcome: to turn stones into bread, to throwhimself from the temple, and to bow down and worship thedevil. On Sunday, I mentioned a book by Henri Nouwentitled The Selfless Way of Christ . In it he talks about thesethree temptations and how they are still temptations for allof us today. According to Nouwen, we all have three basictemptations:

    1) THE TEMPTATION TO BE RELEVANT (Stonesinto bread) "This temptation touches us at the center

of our identity. In a variety of ways, we are made tobelieve that we are what we produce. This leads to apreoccupation with products, visible results, tangiblegoods, and progress. The temptation to be relevant isdifficult to shake since it is usually not considered atemptation but a call. We make ourselves believe that weare called to be productive, successful, and efficient peoplewhose words and actions show that working for God'sReign is at least as dignified an occupation as working forGeneral Electric, Mobile Oil, or the government. But this

is giving into the temptation to be relevant and respectablein the eyes of the world." (Nouwen 50-51)2) THE TEMPTATION TO BE SPECTACULAR(Throw yourself from this temple) "It is important torealize that our hunger for the spectacular like our desireto be relevant has very much to do with our search forselfhood. To be a person and to be seen, praised, liked andaccepted have become nearly the same for many. Who amI when nobody pays attention, says thanks, or recognizesmy work? The more insecure doubtful and lonely we are,the greater our need for popularity and praise. Sadly, thishunger is never satisfied. The more praise we receive, themore we desire. The hunger for human acceptance is likea bottomless barrel. It can never be filled."(Nouwen 56-57)3) THE TEMPTATION TO BE POWERFUL (I willgive you all these kingdoms) "I t seem nearly impossible

for us to believe that any good can come frompowerlessness. In this country of pioneers and self-madepeople, in which ambition is praised from the first momentwe enter school until we enter the competitive world of free enterprise, we cannot imagine that any good can comefrom giving up power or not desiring it. The all-pervasiveconviction in our society is that power is good and thatthose possessing it can only desire more of it. Power cantake many forms: money, connections, fame, intellectualability, skills. These are all ways to get some sense of security and control, and strengthen the illusion that lifeis ours to dispose ofThere is almost nothing moredifficult to overcome than our desire for power. Poweralways lusts after greater power precisely because it is anillusion." (Nouwen 61-62)

It is easy to see that these temptations are still very muchpresent today for all of us. These are temptations that arevery real and ongoing. Lent is a time to wrestle with thesethings. Growing spiritually is never easy, but it's always worthit. It takes focus, discipline, self-denial, and prayer. Authorslike Nouwen give us words upon which we can reflect andpray. It's up to us to take the time to open ourselves up to thespirit of God. "Without the spirit, our busy lives remain boringlives in which the many events of each day remain a series of random incidents and accidents. Without the spirit, our livesremain truly uneventful. But with the Spirit, all that takesplace from day to day, week to week, and year to year, can beknown and experienced as the concrete manifestation of theChrist-event in time and space." (72-73)

As I write this we are about half waythrough the season of Lent that began on(Ash ) Wednesday, February 13. Having beenraised in a markedly Protestant system, Lent

was never a part of my religious experience. Nonetheless, I

was always aware that the season had begun when I saw myCatholic friends show up at school on a specific Thursday inFebruary with ashes still on their foreheads from the nightbefore. There was something quite mysterious about seeingthose kids as if they were marked for a special purpose orknew something about God that had been hidden from me.Compared to the no-frills spiritual instruction and unadornedworship experiences of my humble Baptist church, it seemedmy Catholic pals were practicing their faith on a wholedifferent plane.

I am glad we recognize and celebrate The Lenten Season

at Woodmont. It is an ancient practice reaching back to anevent that, more or less, marked the official organization of Christ's Church. At The Council of Nicaea (a city in modernday Turkey) in 325 AD, church leaders from across theknown world met to establish fundamental tenets of TheChristian faith from which we have the profound andstill-recited Nicene Creed. During this gathering it wasdeclared that a forty-day period of preparation, leading up tothe celebration of Easter, should be instituted throughout TheChurch. (Thus, the title of this piece, Tessarakonta , meaning"forty" in Greek. If you think I actually knew this before I satdown to compile these thoughts you would be wrong).

As I'm sure most of you know, forty days was not anarbitrary period of time; it is a commemoration of Jesus'temptation in the wilderness.

Then J esus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness

to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and fortynights and afterwards he was famished. (Matthew 4:1-2)

As Jesus' forty-day period in the wilderness prepared Himfor His ministry, so we are to prepare for the celebration of His resurrection during Lent.

Pope Gregory (c. 540-604 AD) added the institution of ashes in the event we call Ash Wednesday. The ashessymbolize repentance (sackcloth and ashes) and mortality("You are dust, and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:19).

Finally, it may be that some of you, like me, haveperceived Lent to be a season of inward gazing, self-denial,penitence and other attitudes of the heart and mind they cancause us to be heavily burdened. In fact, Lent is to be a joyfulcelebration: a time of remembering that we are citizens of God's Kingdom and that we love, worship and serve a RisenSavior!

He is risen! He is risen, indeed!

    Amen.

Jeremiah gave me an easel for Christmas.I had never considered myself an artist andhad never voluntarily picked up a paintbrush.

That being said I have found so much pleasure sitting in frontof that easel. Painting at my easel has become therapeutic. I tis a time where I am able to slow down and process the daywhile the canvas slowly changes beneath the paintbrush. Ithas become a time to pray and be with God.

Most of the time when I start painting, my mind is filledwith worries, fears, and doubts but as the canvas changes my

thoughts begin to move towards God and the things I amthankful forfamily, friends, a warm house, the birds outsidethe window, the beginning of spring, and God's ever presenthand in our lives.

Even just a few minutes painting at my easel helps me tofeel centered, renewed, and refreshed.

Where in the World is Alan Nelson? If you have attended a morning worship service, even just once, you have, no doubt, seen AlanNelson! With camera(s) in hand or on a tripod, you have seen Alan mingling around not only thesanctuary, but also classrooms, the Gathering Hall or other parts of the Woodmont campus. Alanspends countless hours around the church capturing events from CWF meetings to Children'sChurch to 5-Star Dinners, Y outh Events, Small Group events and the list goes on and on. He doesnot limit his work only to events at 3601 Hillsboro Road. He ventures out to restaurants, coffeeshops, member's homes (with permission, of course) and other places where WCC small groupsmay be gathering. In fact, every Monday and every Thursday morning, the church office canexpect photos/videos from Sunday events and 5-Star activities. Often photos are supplied by Alanthroughout the week for other events. You will see much of his work in The Spire and on the WCCwebsite ( woodmontchristian.org ). Parents look forward to Alan's photos/videos of their children atworship, in VBS or other church events.

Alan is originally from the small town of Wytheville, Virginia but his travels in media communicationshave taken him all over the world. As a retired Senior Writer/Producer of Administrative Communicationswith Gaylord Entertainment Company he has traveled 26 countries producing USO celebrity tour specials. He is a Grammy nominee and a television film critic. He has met and interviewed countless big-namecelebrities and musicians. If you happen to be an "Alan Facebook friend," you have often seen hisreflections of some of those events, as well as, more of his work around Woodmont. In addition, he's a

master at capturing sunsets/sunrises, blooming croci and redbud, full moons and a"special spire" in Green Hills.

We are grateful for Alan and all of the time and effort he devotes to this church. Woodmont's history andheritage are so important. Alan has taken it upon himself to see that history and heritage is covered inphotography and videography. No one asks him to do ithe doesn't get paid a penny for ithe supplies allthe equipment needed to do itand he asks for nothing in return. What a gift!

Thank you Alan Nelsonyou are a real Woodmont hero...and we appreciate YOU!
