We are squarely in Lent, the liturgicalseason that culminates in the highest andholiest days of the Christian calendar. Oneof these days is Maundy Thursday. On the

original Maundy Thursday long ago, Christ gathered with his

disciples a final time before his execution and burial. He, theirleader and teacher, would soon be separated from them. Howdo you think he spent the precious little time that he had withthem?

The book of John gives us the invaluable perspective ofone who was sitting on the front row: "He laid aside his outergarments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then hepoured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feetand to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped aroundhim" (13:4-5). Washing feet was a menial task, reserved onlyfor lowly servants. It was not at all fitting for someone of

Christ's station! But in a stunning reversal, he, their master, became their servant. He, the first, became the last. He, thegreatest, became the least. The book of John gives a brief, butpowerful statement about this act: "Jesus showed them thefull extent of his love" (13:1).

This month, Woodmont Christian Church partnered withHabitat for Humanity to build a three-bedroom home for aman named Randall Lewis. Maybe you saw his story featuredon the local news! Not so long ago, an addiction to drugsand alcohol had him living on the streets of Nashville. But through agencies like Room In the Inn, Goodwill, andHabitat for Humanity, the grace of God touched his life. Now a changed man, Mr. Lewis will soon have a homeand the dignity that comes with it. From homelessness tohome-ownership! Hallelujah!

One day, I visited the worksite and saw all that the churchwas doing to serve this man. I was reminded yet again thatWoodmont Christian Church is a church full of servants, andI felt an overwhelming sense of pride. I felt proud of theexcellent work being done for someone who until recentlywas just a stranger. I felt proud to be associated with a churchthat does so much good in its community. I felt proud to beone of your pastors.

But service need not be a once-a-year thing! Why waituntil next year's Habitat for Humanity project to serve? Thechurch has several small groups whose sole purpose is toserve and who do so all year long - winter, spring, summer,or fall. The Super Somebodies, the Heavenly Helpers, andNashville Tools for Schools are but a few examples.

How often do we hear, "Why doesn't somebody?" WeSomebody does. On the first Friday of each month, tSuper Somebodies meet to complete work projects around tchurch campus. Led by a dynamo named Steve McHug

they do whatever it takes to keep the property in excellecondition, which saves money that can then be directed outreach ministries.

But what if there's a need unrelated to the church buildinSusan Batson, who leads the work of the Heavenly Helpesays, "We're committed to caring for both our churmembers and community members. The projects that we are many and varied and require a range of skills. We migpaint, build a handicap ramp, complete minor home repaor yard work, or drive someone to a doctor's appointmenAccording to Susan, the bottom line is this: "We'll

    anything for anyone."

Finally, I highly recommend picking up a hammer Nashville Tools for Schools. Founded by a church membnamed John Carpenter, this group serves the Metro NashviPublic School System. Like most public school systems, ouhas more need than material wealth, so John and his "baof merry men" complete construction projects for locschools - desks, shelves, lockers, and more. In everything, thgroup not only provides service with a smile, but also a gohearty laugh.

Friends, if Christ isn't above serving others, then how cwe be? If Christ isn't above dressing as a humble servant, thhow can we not trade our suits and ties for overalls and tobelts? If Christ isn't above washing feet, then how can wrefuse to get a little messy ourselves for the benefit of others

Consider this your personal invitation to one of these smgroups: the Super Somebodies, the Heavenly Helpers, aNashville Tools for Schools. He who washed the disciplfeet says, "If I, then, your Lord and Teacher, have washyour feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. Fohave given you an example, that you also should do just ahave done to you" (13:14-15). Say, "Yes, Lord, I will followand discover how blessed it is be a blessing to others!

    This is the day that the Lord has made;

let us rejoice and be glad in it.Psalm 118:24

I'm at Jekyll Island this week with my mom, my

grandmother and my daughter. We are four generations ofTallu in one place. My great-grandmother Tallu lived andworked on this island as a writer and historian until she diedin the 1960s. The books she wrote and published during hercareer chronicle the unique history of Jekyll. Her work topreserve the stories of this place has been curated and turnedinto a museum that is still open today. And there is a smallroad on the island - one of the main paths down to the beach -named in her memory. A dozen times over the years, mymom, my grandmother and I had our picture madebeneath the street sign at Tallu Fish Lane.

Lately I have been stressing myself out, privately notingall the ways I am failing to capture my seven-month olddaughter's milestones or to create traditions for her. I carryaround guilt for working full time outside of our home, forbeing away from her so much of the week, for taking workcalls at odd hours of the day. I tag things on PinterestI wantto make for her and make lists of experiences I want to sharewith her instead of just being present in the moment to sing asong or to babble sweet sounds back to her. Self-imposedpressures and feelings of worry and guilt are paired with thesense that life is moving fast, and that there is not enoughtime to slow down, or to be present with the people we love.

In his book about mindful parenting, Jon Kabat-Zinnwrites, "We often find ourselves, in spite of our bestintentions and our deep love for our children, running more orless on automatic pilot. To the extent that we are chronicallypreoccupied and invariably pressed for time, we may be outof touch with the richness, with what Thoreau called the'bloom' of the present moment."

Oh to be present in all things, especially in the growing of our children's lives. God longs for us to live our livpeacefully and present to the blessings he has given us. The Lord's Prayer, we ask God to Give us this day - give nothing more than thisday. But the world gives us a milli

and one opportunities each day to tune out the greatblessings of our lives before us, and too often, we do. Amthe only one who hurries through my prayers of thanks, wlongs for empty days and wishes for enough quiet time to justop, catch up, and sit down to jot everything down?

This morning I took my Lulah down to the beach. She win a carrier on my back and the tide was low. The wavuncovered sand dollars just beneath the surface of the sanThe sun was shining but not too hot. The seagulls weflirting with the wind and then the water. The breeze wblowing, my phone was back in my bedroom. We had

agenda, we had no destination, we had nowhere else wneeded to be. I tickled Lulah's feet and we laughed. I sangsong to her that my mom sang to me, one that her mosang to her. She eventually fell asleep and when we walkback to the house, I found my grandmother resting in beI laid Lulah down beside her, still sleeping. I held mgrandmother's soft, sun-wrinkled hand. She talked andlistened for almost two hours.

We all have a daily grind we have to get through. We have armfuls of worry and doubt and fear that we are failinThe cacophony of these things will drown out the sacredne

of what is before us. Tonight, I'm sitting out on the porchcan hear my mother's soft snoring in the next room aLulah's gentle breathing in her sleep through the bamonitor. Tomorrow we will drive to Tallu Fish Lane fanother photo, the first snapshot that will include Lulah, nickname shortened from Tallulah. We do not have to lofar for the blessings of our lives.

God's peace to each of you this week, tallu
