To make matters more difficult, we had literally just exhausted ourselves with the Association of Anglican Musicians conference. In hindsight, I think the most revealing thing happened. Without pause we adjusted our repertoire and focused on one of the essential reasons for making music – supporting and shaping a caring and loving community. In this year that was supposed to be the “easy year” for so many reasons – new organ, no construction, new schedules etc. – we found the heart of our music program. We don’t come here to Christ Church to take the easy path. We come here to grow and make a difference. The word liturgy is loosely translated as “the work of the people” or “the work for the people.” Thank you for all of your hard work, the loving group of people you are, and of course, I hope we’ve had lots of fun along the way!

An Excerpt from Christopher Wells’ End of Year Address to the Choirs

As I’ve said many times, my work here is nothing without the choirs. It is not enough to play some organ music and hymns on Sundays. But rather, it is the collaborative effort of each of our choirs that makes music at Christ Church a meaningful part of our community. Episcopal Youth Community Thanks to EYC ParentsSpecial thanks to all of the EYC parents for providing Monday night food. Sharing meals is a meaningful part of our Monday night fellow-ship that wouldn’t be possible without you. Thanks to EYC Volunteer Leaders John Dias and Katherine Bryce Congratulations Class of 2011Along with the end of the program year comes an important transition for the seniors in the EYC. At the end of June they will be graduating from high school and moving on to the next important part of their lives. It has been wonderful seeing them grow up, practice their Christianity and become the people God calls for them to be. This year’s class is particularlyunique, inthatitisthefirstclassthathasbeenintheEYCfor all four years of high school. Five years ago the EYC didn’t exist! We wish all of the class of 2011 the best of luck as they become adults, and thank them for their years of service at CCB! Parish NewsGeorgetown honors Mary Taylor Behrens with Prestigious Award

We all know about the generosity of Mary Taylor Behrens and her family at Christ Church. Mary served the on the Vestry and as Warden for 5 years. She and her husband, Chris funded the renovation of the eponymous Taylor hall, to honor her parents Arthur and Carol. Mary was also a Co-Chair of the Sure Foundation Capital Campaign and Co-Head of the Search Committee that found Father Bird. Mary and Chris host many events for the parish at their lovely home. Her answer to most any plea for help is “yes, of course!”

Mary also answers in a similar fashion to her beloved alma mater, Georgetown University. Mary ran track on scholarship at Georgetown in the early 1980s. She graduated and built a successful career on Wall Street, and for a time was the most senior female at Merrill Lynch. Mary was an Investment Banker,

headed Human Resources, and ran Asset Management in the US. At the end of her career on Wall Street, she began her sevenyearsofserviceontheBoardofRegentsatGeorgetown.SherantheRegent’sAthleticCommitteeforfiveyears.Shewas also Co-Chair for Fundraising for her 25th Reunion.

The John Carroll Award was established by the Georgetown University Alumni Association in 1951 to honor alumni whose achievements exemplify the ideals and traditions of Georgetown University and its founder, Archbishop John Carroll.

Mary was joined at the awards ceremony by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Margaret Taylor Conaton. Christ Church is so proud to call Mary “one of our own.”

A Special Thank You from the Church of the Intercession

Outreach

CCB Malawi: The SequelThank you so much for your generosity in helping us work hand in hand with the Monthers’ Unions in the parish outstations in the villages of Chileka, Khambwe, Samama, and Thubulubu. Our goal was to raise $5000 to complete a 30 garden permaculture project. We were able to raise $10,000! These gardens will provide food for consumption and trade for the more than 2,500 people under the care of Father Barnabas Salaka and the Anglican Mothers’ Union. This past program year was a busy one for outreach, both domestically and internationally, as well as a year of change. From

fall 2010 to spring 2011, and especially on our annual Global Mission Sunday, members of our parish gave of themselvestobenefit:Breakfast & Midnight Runs, the Bronx River Conservancy, the Church of the Intercession, the United Interfaith Food Bank, Fessenden House, Thorpe House and the Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen. Our seasonal fundraising projects included two international projects and one local. This past Advent, CCB Global Mission expanded its involvement with the Buduburam Refugee School in Ghana through a fundraiser entitled “Lettuce Pray.” In the spring we turned our attention to the local Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen with our “Dine In” program. And at the end of the program year we’ve once again crossed the Atlantic to continue our relief efforts with “Malawi II: The Sequel.”The committee coordinating CCB’s aid projects also decided upon a name change, from the Outreach CommitteetotheGlobalMissionCommittee, betterreflectingtheincreasingscopeofourwork.Andcommunicationwithintheparishwasimprovedwithmonthlyfliersappearingalongsidechurchbulletins, explaining our outreach programs and informing parishioners of coming projects in which they might participate. As we look forward to 2011-2012 and how we might expand upon our service to others, Christ Church Bronxville would like to thank the following members of the Global Mission committee for their time, organizational skills and leadership this past year: Mary Anne Ecklond, Jim Sutton, Jody Maier, Krista Dias, Letizia Alvisi, Dr. Etta Eskridge, Michael Pollack, PG and Carol Costa, Shawn O’Neil, Barbara McKinnon, Barbara Potgieter, Camille Mordaunt, Debbie Cook, Sarah Kraemer and Ken Richardson. - Ken Richardson
