A Decisive Meeting about the Constituent Assembly

In its meeting with political parties and powers, SCAF decided to hold a final meeting tomorrow to lay down the final criteria of forming the Constituent Assembly that would draft the Constitution.

MP Mustafa Bakri who attended the meeting declared in a press conference that SCAF, headed by Tantawi, are keen on holding the run-off round of the elections on time.

The majority of the political players who attended the meeting refused the Advisory Council’s suggestion to amend 60 of the Constitutional Declaration.

Bakri also reported that the political powers also refused the suggestion to form a presidential council, referring to SCAF’s keenness on handing over the power on June 30.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the People’s Assembly Saad al-Katatni declared that the assembly would not be reluctant in preserving its legislative authorities, and would never allow anybody to takeover this authority.

Al-Katatni’s statements were commenting on inquiries about potential SCAF’s will to issue a complementary constitutional declaration about the formation of the Constituent Assembly and the president’s authorities.

Four parties did not participate in the meeting with SCAF; the Freedom and Justice Party, al-Adl [Justice] Party, al-Wasat Party, al-Amal Party and Free Egyptians Party.

MB Seeks to Get Back All Fired Members

The Muslim Brotherhood group had issued orders to its officials to hold meetings with the group’s members, who were suspended over their support for Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh’s presidential bid.

The group had fired Abul-Fotouh because he announced running in the presidential elections, while the group at the time had declared that none of its members will pursue the post. Many members followed Abul-Fotouh out.

Officials in the group have been holding one-on-one meetings with the suspended members to see whether it was possible to let them back in, well-informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Yom newspaper.

Shafiq’s Vows

Presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq condemned calls to implement the political isolation law now, he said in an interview to CBC TV channel.

“Who gave them the authority to implement the disenfranchisement law,” Shafiq said referring to ex-presidential candidates Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh, Hamdeen Sabahi and Khaled Ali. Only the Supreme Constitutional Court has the right to call for its implementation, he said.

Shafiq said what is happening now has nothing to do with the January 25 Revolution.

“We must accept the results of the elections and I am not afraid from my rivals,” he said.

About the guarantees that he could give, Shafiq said every citizen has the right to submit their suggestions but they do not have the right to set them as terms and conditions for the new president.

He added that he accepted one of the pledge documents that were submitted to him.

He said that he can restore the regularity of traffic and that he could not do this in the first month at the time he was Prime Minister, as the situation back then was extremely different.

Shafiq commented on Abul-Fotouh’s accusations, saying that it is not appropriate to say such things.

Shafiq also said that he will add verses from the Bible to the Arabic language school curriculums.

Shafiq added that the Muslim Brotherhood joined the revolution when it became sure the revolution will succeed.

Shafiq said the only document that the new president should vow to commit to is the constitution.

There are documents that prove that the MB was involved in the “Camel Battle", Shafiq said.

When Will SCAF’s Meetings with Political Parties End?

Head of SCAF Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Chief of Staff and Deputy

Head of SCAF Lieutenant General Sami Anan, and a number of members of SCAF held a meeting yesterday with heads and representatives of 18 political parties. The meeting lasted nearly 4 hours and the outcome was nothing new.

SCAF generals renewed their threats, which came out a month ago, to either issue a

complementary constitutional declaration unilaterally or restore the 1971 Constitution, if political forces failed to agree on the criteria of selecting members of the Constituent Assembly.

The Freedom and Justice Party, Al-Wasat Party and Ghad Al-Thawra Party boycotted

SCAF’s meeting. MP Mostafa Bakri said the participants agreed on holding a meeting next Thursday to

take a final decision on the Constituent Assembly’s criteria. If they failed to reach a final decision, SCAF will issue a Constitutional Declaration before the runoff, Bakri said.

Judicial Authority Angered by Criticism

“If it was up to me, I would order Mubarak’s execution right away but simply judges

need evidence to issue their verdicts,” said Senior Judge Ahmed Soliman, head of Al-Minya’s Judges Club.

The Supreme Judicial Council, headed by Senior Judge Hossam Al-Gheriani, held an

emergency meeting yesterday to discuss ways of responding to what they described as “insults directed at the judicial authority by the media and the parliament.”

Al-Gheriani declared that many media figures and Members of the Parliament were

quick to offend judges and the entire judiciary after the announcement of the verdicts in the Mubarak trial, before they had a chance to examine the details of the court’s verdicts.

84 Days for a Health Amnesty for Mubarak

Al-Shurouk reported that Suzan Mubarak’s visit to her husband was illegal; arguing that’s it was against the prisons laws to visit a prisoner in the first ten days.

Muhamamd Ilewa, head of the Department on Information and Relationships in the Prisons’ Directorate said the visit was legal in the frame of exceptional visits granted to prisoners in some cases.

Moreover, sources reported that Mubarak can make use of the prisons’ law that grants a prisoner the right to file a claim to the Attorneys General to be treated according to article 36 that gives a prisoner the right to be released in case the prison was a threat against their life.

MPs Accuse Media of Working against the Revolution

Speaker of the People’s Assembly Dr. Saad El-Katatni and a number of Members of the Parliament leveled strong criticism against the media, accusing newspapers and channels of spreading false information to tarnish the parliament’s image.

MPs criticized Minister of Information Ahmed Anis, who attended the parliament’s

session, and accused him of failing to monitor the integrity of the news published on the People’s Assembly and its members.

El-Katatni stressed that the parliament was under heavy attack by official and

independent media channels and newspapers, which is completely against the ideals of the revolution.

Commemorating Khaled Said’s Anniversary

Revolutionary and political forces prepare to commemorate the second anniversary of

Khaled Said’s murder, which is considered the spark of the January 25 revolution. “The Martyr of Emergency Law,” as many activists call him, is considered one of the

figures of the revolution. A number of political activists and public figures will organize a stand in front of his house in Alexandria, and they will hold pictures of Said and other martyrs of the revolution to honor their memory.

“Said was killed two years ago at the hands of MOI’s thugs. Many young people refused

to live under such oppression and tyranny, thus they took off to the streets to demand justice,” said activists organizing the event.

Statement Regarding Morsi’s Conference with Female Icons of Egyptian Society

Dr. Mohamed Morsi held a conference, earlier today, in a hotel in the Egyptian capital Cairo, with a number of female and societal icons to listen to their ideas and aspirations, and to tell them of his vision for a modern, democratic homeland.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Nadia Mostafa, professor of international relations and head of the Hadara Center; Dr. Bakinam Sharkawi, political science professor; Dr. Heba Qutb, sexual health physician; Amal Fawzi, managing editor of Nisf Aldonia (Half the world); Ithar Katatni, press writer, Laila Kabbani, member of the Hadara party; and the poet Mahboba Haroun.

The meeting discussed D. Morsi’s vision for women as citizens, equal with men before the law, and the roles performed by them, especially vital maternal and child-care roles.

Dr. Morsi focused on the concerns of marginalized women, such as farmer women, female-headed households and working women.

Moreover, Dr. Morsi pointed that of Egyptian society has its own cultural and legal specificity that helps protect it from some of the problems prevalent in other societies.

Dr. Morsi further affirmed that he has no intention to change any of the personal status laws, including the age of marriage, child custody and the law of banning circumcision.

Dr. Morsi also reiterated his earlier promise to appoint a woman as Vice President of the Republic to participate effectively and positively in decision-making.

Muslim Brotherhood Re-Affirms Joining Revolution Squares Protests

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt denounced the unprofessional discourse of some

journalists and the media in reporting inaccurate and fabricated fables aimed to taint and slander the Muslim Brotherhood, like circulating that the Brotherhood only participates in revolutionary street activities symbolically. In a statement, today, the Brotherhood said: "We participated positively and strongly in the activities expressing public reactions to the verdicts issued for the killers of demonstrators, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The Brotherhood called for today’s million-man protests with participation by all the political forces.

Page 29: News Coverage prepared for: The European Union delegation ...eeas.europa.eu/archives/delegations/egypt/documents/semc/20120606_en.pdf · 1 News Coverage prepared for: The European

"The Brotherhood set the demands of million-man protests as: a re-trial of the killers; prosecuting Ahmed Shafiq, Mahmoud Wagdi and the commanders of the intelligence and state security apparatus of the former regime for destroying evidence; and preventing the replication of the former regime." The statement stressed that the Muslim Brotherhood, as an integral part of the people of this homeland, will continue to partake in the people’s activities so as to achieve the most important demands of the revolution, and especially retribution for the blood of the martyrs of the revolution.
