No Negotiations... Strikes Continue

The government is continuing difficult negotiations to stop the wave of workers’ strikes. The Ministry of Manpower formed joint committees from the ministry and the parliament, in addition to representatives of firms and businesses, to negotiate the demands of the workers. However, all these attempts failed and the ministry had to rely on police forces to secure the exit of its employees from the building after hundreds of workers of Al-Makarem Textile Factory surrounded the ministry’s headquarters.

Also, workers in the Public Transport Authority began their strike in three garages to

demand end of service benefits. Workers protesters spread in more than eight factories in Suez to demand improvement

of their working conditions and financial benefits.

University Students Protest to Demand Student Unions Elections

A huge protest took place yesterday in front of the cabinet headquarters as more than 3000 students from over 12 universities around the country marched to demand setting a date for holding student unions elections. A delegation of three students representing the protesters will meet Minister of Higher Education Dr. Hassan Khaled to put forward their demands.

Students erected a stage in front of the cabinet building while security forces prevented

them from entering the street near the People’s Assembly. Students presented three major demands; first, opening the door for holding student

unions elections next week after the elections were postponed for a full academic term. Second, issuing a ministerial decree to establish Egypt’s Student Union comprising representative from each university. Third, presenting the set of regulations of the student unions to the parliament for approval.

Students protesting declared their refusal of the statement made by the Ministry of

Higher Education and they demanded an official decree that guarantees the fulfillment of their demands instead of a rhetorical statement.

Morsi: Changing the Government is a Must

Head of the Freedom and Justice Party Dr. Mohamed El-Morsi said that Egyptians are facing huge challenges to continue the revolution. He confirmed that the FJP is keen to reach a consensus with all political parties to achieve the goals of the revolution.

Morsi said that the People’s Assembly and the government should work together to

achieve the interests of the country. Since the parliament reflects the will of the people now, the interests of the country require replacing El-Ganzouri’s government with a new one, Al-Morsi said. He confirmed that a new government should be formed without any delays and it should reflect the aspirations of the people as well as achieve their demands. He said the coming prime minister should be from the Freedom and Justice Party and other ministers will be chosen from other political parties represented in the parliament.

Morsi also demanded SCAF to take immediate steps to change El-Ganzouri’s

government. He confirmed that Egypt is facing serious threats internally and externally and this requires appointing a new government. He said the FJP will continue efforts to withdraw confidence from El-Ganzouri’s government.

Disagreements among Political Forces on Deals with Ex-Regime’s Tora Inmates

Reactions varied to the proposals made to strike deals with former regime figures, who

are imprisoned in Torah, to return some of the country’s stolen funds in exchange of dropping some of the charges against them.

The Freedom and Justice Party, political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, confirmed

that these deals are unacceptable. Al-Nour Salafi Party refused any attempts of reconciliation with figures of the former regime that corrupted political life in the country for decades. On the other hand, Al-Wafd Party said that reconciliation is possible only in charges related to financial corruption because it will be in the benefit of the society.

Ali Fath Al-Bab, majority party leader in the Shoura Council, confirmed that negotiating

with former regime figures to return the stolen funds cannot be done because money will be recovered in any way when they receive sentences. “If we did this, then anyone will commit whatever crimes he wants, then pays some money to gain his freedom,” said Fath Al-Bab.
