Mursi and Shafiq in Expatriates’ Votes

Vote counting continues in Egyptian embassies and consulates.

Shafiq won in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, while Mursi won in Chicago.

Shafiq won in Paris, Marseille, Tunisia, Lebanon and Holland.

On the other hand, Mursi won in Mauritania with 62% of votes for 38% for Shafiq. Mursi

also won in Dubai, London, Nigeria, Algeria, Yemen and Jordan.

Mursi alluded to some alleged intention to forge the Nation’s will, while Shafiq accused

the Muslim Brotherhood of attempting to spoil the elections.

In another context, a source from the Intelligence stated that the Intelligence Service

Apparatus refused to get involved in the conflicts of the presidential race.

Competition Heated

Candidate Muhammad Mursi launched a barrage of criticism against the former regime

and candidate Ahmad Shafiq.

Mursi accused Shafiq and the former regime behind him of rigging. Mursi claimed that a

million Pounds was paid to every village administrator to push villagers to vote for Shafiq. 500

Pounds were paid to every voter to vote for Shafiq, Mursi claimed.

Islamists intensified their campaign against Shafiq in Minia. Mursi threatened to tread

on people who vote for Shafiq.

The Ministry of Transport will provide services to facilitate the voting process. Trains

and busses will be free on the two voting days.

In Aswan, Copts, tribes, Sufis and Nubians support Shafiq.

Former candidate Abu al-Futouh’s campaign declared supporting Muhammad Mursi.

In a press conference Shafiq accused the Muslim Brotherhood of terrorizing people,

bribing voters. Shafiq said the Muslim Brotherhood was using mosques for illegal campaigning

and the Parliament to exclude him from the presidential race.

Al-Ahram reported Mursi’s lead in Dubai, Bahrain, Germany, London and Pakistan,

while Shafiq won in France, Holland, America, Tunisia and Australia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhmmad Amr declared that 310 expatriates voted in the

run-off round.

Shafiq’s deputy in Saudi Arabia’s al-Riyadh filed contestations against 3000 votes.

Former candidate Hamdeen Sabhi leads a campaign called “Sorry, I will annul my vote,’

calling to boycott the run-off round of the presidential elections.

New Campaign to Nullify Votes in Runoff

A group of political activists launched a campaign that aims to annul 10 million votes in the second round of the presidential elections, which will take place on June 16 and 17.

Speaking at a press conference Sunday, the campaign launchers said it would be the nucleus of opposition against the upcoming president.

Campaign coordinator Mohamed Ghoneim said the campaign does not aim to convince people to invalidate their votes but rather to collect the names of those who already decided to do so.

Before its launch, 200,000 people have joined it but the target figure is 10 million, Ghoneim said.

Campaign co-founder Ghada el-Shabandar said her group is trying to communicate with “Moqateoon” (boycotters) campaign.

The choice between Mohamed Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq in the runoff is a choice between bad and worse, she said.

Probe Panel Formed into MP Complaint against Shafiq

Counselor Osama el-Saaidi, who was delegated by the justice minister to probe claims filed by MP Essam Sultan against presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq, decided to form an investigation panel made up of experts from the Illicit Gains Authority, Public Funds Police and

Administrative Supervisory Authority.

Investigations into the case are likely to last for two weeks.

On May 13, the People's Assembly, the lower house of parliament, decided to refer to the prosecutor general for investigation a land sale contract forged between Shafiq and the sons

of the former president upon Sultan's complaint.

The contract is dated November 1993, under which a 40,238-square meter land, overlooking the Great Bitter Lake, was sold for a nugatory price of EGP 0.75 per meter, while its real value was EGP 8.

Shafiq was then the chairman of an association supervising the land.

The land is owned by the state and was allocated to an association for young Air Force soldiers. Immediately after becoming the chairman of the association, Shafiq's first decision was to sell the land, Sultan had said.

Indicators of Egyptian Expatriates Runoff Votes

Initial results of the vote of Egyptian expatriates in the second round of the presidential elections in 48 countries showed Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi leading the

race with 53.39%.

His rival, Ahmed Shafiq, got remaining 45.61%.

In Arab countries, Morsi was most voted-for candidate, although he lagged behind in

European countries.

Morsi Beats Shafiq in Expatriates Votes

Presidential candidate Mohamed Morsi has mostly dominated the votes of Egyptian expatriates abroad against his competitor ex-prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.

The results of 37 countries revealed that Morsi stunningly garnered 63% of the votes.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Amr Roshdi voter turnout was high as 310,000 turned out to cast their ballots. The figure is nearly the same to the number of those who voted in the first round of the presidential elections, Roshdi.

Shura Council Sets Main Features of New Constitution

The Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee at the Shura Council, the upper chamber of parliament, prepared a report of the main features of the new constitution.

The ruling regime will be a hybrid parliamentary-presidential system, under which the prime minister will be appointed by the president.

The president will head the supreme councils of the Armed Forces, the judiciary and police and will have the right to declare war, said committee member Yehia Akeal.

Mubarak Death is Just Rumors

Reports about the death of former president Hosni Mubarak were just rumors, security and medical sources confirmed.

His health condition, however, is critical and on the wane, the sources said.

Al-Gomhoria newspaper visited the Mubarak family graveyard and found that it was closed and no preparations have been taking place as alleged.

Mubarak has asked to be buried beside his grandson, who died two years ago and was said to be very close to him, the sources said.

MB Plan to Take Over Central Bank

Al-Dostour newspaper allocated page 7 to discuss the Muslim Brotherhood’s alleged

plan to take over the Central Bank of Egypt.

People’s Assembly Speaker Saad el-Katatni agreed to discuss the law governing the CBE

without referring it to the Parliament’s proposals committee.

Some of the articles included in this law support the independence of the CBE. The CBE

governor and his deputy cannot be dismissed from their positions.

Mubarak Deteriorating Health Conditions

The wife of the former president Suzanne Mubarak and his daughter-in-law Heidi

Rasekh went to visit him in Tora Prison Hospital.

The visit was considered a goodbye one due to Mubarak’s deteriorating health

conditions.

A source from Ministry of Interior denied that president Mubarak has died and said his

health conditions is getting worse.

MB Killed the Protestors in the so-Called Camel Battle

The Public Prosecutor submitted the reports filed by several lawyers against Muslim

Brotherhood (MB) to Minister of Justice.

In these reports MB were accused of killing the protestors on Camel Battle, by using

paid snipers from Hamas Movement.

On the “Friday of Anger” [Jan 28, 2012] the MB was accused of attacking the prisons ,

smuggling their imprisoned allies using heavy artillery, killing the police officers and setting

fire in the prisons’ premises.

The reports showed that there were videos that proved the above mentioned

information.

In the reports they demanded to hear the statements of the chief of current Intelligence

Service Apparatus, Major General Omar Soliman , Major General Al-Roweeny SCAF Member,

to prove the validity of this information.

Begato: Shafik Candidacy Papers are Valid

Secretary General of the Presidential Elections Commission Judge Hatem Begato said

The Commission would refer the insults between Shafik and Morsi to The Public Prosecution.

Shafik Holds a Press Conference

Presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik held a press conference yesterday. In this

conference he praised the first round of the elections.

He also said that Muslim Brotherhood (MB) were trying to use black publicity methods,

as what he said, by making fake videos of people trying to bribe the citizens to vote for Shafik.

Suzanne Visits Mubarak in Prison to Verify Death Rumors

After rumors spread during the past two days claiming that the ousted president died, Suzanne Mubarak rushed to the Torah Prison Hospital to verify the medical conditions of her husband.

Suzanne Mubarak headed to the Public Prosecutor’s office with a team of Mubarak’s

lawyers to issue exceptional permit to allow her to visit Mubarak in the prison hospital. The Public Prosecutor’s office confirmed to Suzanne Mubarak and the defense team that all the pieces of news referring to Mubarak’s death are mere rumors.

An official source at the Department of Forensic Medicine said they received a copy

from the request of Mubarak’s lawyers along with medical reports which confirm that Mubarak is seriously ill and his life might be compromised in the prison hospital because it is not properly equipped.

Shafiq: I Face the MB Alone

“The Muslim Brotherhood is only after power and they are afraid of ballot boxes,” said presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq in a harsh attack against the MB and their presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Morsi.

Shafiq accused the MB of attempting to disrupt presidential elections and manipulate

voters by using illegal means such as campaigning through mosques. He called on the Presidential Elections Commission and the Ministry of Endowment to interfere to prevent the MB from using houses of worship to achieve political interests. “Enough using religion and distorting houses of God to achieve your purposes,” Shafiq said addressing the MB.

“I am a presidential candidate standing alone in the face of Dr. Mohamed Morsi who is

backed by an ambiguous organization. I face the propaganda of hundreds of members of the MB who are spreading rumors and lies about me,” said Shafiq.

El-Baradei: Egypt’s Revolution is in Intensive Care

“Egypt’s revolution is now in the intensive care unit,” said Dr. Mohamed El-Baradei, former head of the IAEA and co-founder of the Constitution Party, during a talk show hosted by Lamis Al-Hadidi on Saturday.

El-Baradei stressed that Egypt is going through a critical phase, “and we must find ways

to deal with the current situation before violence erupts.” He said the revolution was poorly administered by both SCAF and political forces, which led many people to try to restore the old regime out of frustration.

El-Baradei proposed that the new president comes to office for only one interim year

until the constitution is drafted, then another parliamentary and presidential elections can be held. He also confirmed that the constitution should be considered the basis for any state that goes through a transitional phase. He said the Constituent Assembly should reflect all the segments of the Egyptian society, just like the Committee of 50 which drafted the 1954 Constitution.

New Crisis Faces the Constituent Assembly

SCAF asked for three seats in the Constituent Assembly for each of ten parties, most of

them emerged from the dissolved National Democratic Party.

Many political players did not accept the suggestion and the demand is expected to be

an obstacle that might hinder the formation of the Constituent Assembly.

A new round of negotiations in this response will be held between the different political

players at al-Wafd party headquarters.

Some of the civil political players withdrew from the negotiations as a protest against

the Islamists’ insistence on increasing the percentage of their presentation in the assembly.

Al-Shurouk’s Updates on Presidential Elections

Former candidate Abu al-Futouh declared supporting Mursi in the second round. The

heated competition between Shafiq and Abu al-Futouh continues. Mursi claimed that five

billion Pounds were paid to forge the elections in favor of Shafiq.

Conversely Shafiq accused the Muslim Brotherhood of using “dirty” means to reach

power. He also accused them of working to burn the country.

Al-Shurouk also reported that trains and busses would be free on the voting days.

In a related context, former potential presidential elections candidate Muhammad al-

Baradei set a road map to overcome the crisis.

The map includes a temporal president for one year, a national salvation government

and the draft of a democratic constitution.

Al-Baradei declared that he was going to boycott the second round. He believes that the

victory of Ahmad Shafiq would bring about the revolution and the victory of Mursi would

bring about a bad reality. He declared that both candidates had communicated with him

offering executive positions.

Many political powers welcomed al-Baradei’s initiative.

Muslim Scholars’ Union declared that supporting SHafiq was “haram” [prohibited in

Islam].

Meanwhile, Azhari Sheik al-Sayyid al-Zughbi said Shafiq was sent from God to save

Egypt.

Al-Zend: My Statements Respond to Parliament’s Attacks

Senior Judge Mahmoud Al-Sherif, official spokesman for the Judges Club, said there is no conflict between the judicial and legislative authorities and the Judges Club does not wish to clash with any political power.

Al-Sherif explained that the escalating situation between judges and the parliament has

not come to an end after judges were able to respond to the attack against them. “We do not wish to deepen the conflict and the issue is now taking a legal dimension as

angry judges filed complaints with the Public Prosecution to investigate statements questioning their credibility,” said Al-Sherif.

More Than 500 Apply for Constituent Assembly Membership

Political parties, trade unions, Al-Azhar, the church and public figures submitted nearly 500 names for the membership of the Constituent Assembly, the body assigned to write the nation’s new constitution, as the deadline for its membership application expired Sunday.

Al-Wafd Party leader el-Sayed el-Badawi was among those who refused to apply for the Constituent Assembly.

Al-Wasat Party nominated its leader Abul-Ela Madi and deputy leader Essam Sultan, while the Construction and Development Party, the political wing of the Islamic Group, nominated Mohamed Derbala and Mohamed Mahsoub.

People’s Assembly Speaker Saad el-Katatni promised to allow the representation of actors and artists under the public figures category.

Shafiq’s Power Owed to NDP Money

The unexpected appearance of Hosni Mubarak’s last prime minister in the runoff of Egypt’s first post-revolutionary presidential race owes much to support from business tycoons and other backers of the old regime.

The candidate, Ahmed Shafiq, 70, gained enormous popularity during the final stretch of the race by appealing to weary Egyptians’ desire for a return to the stability of the old Egypt,

The Washington Post reported.

But even some supporters acknowledge that he also drew on money and expertise from a vast network of Mubarak’s former supporters, whose National Democratic Party is now banned, the American daily said.

A former air force general, Shafiq finished second in the first round of balloting and faces the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi in a presidential runoff next weekend.

A victory by Shafiq would be seen as a defeat by many who took part in the wintertime revolution last year that ousted Mubarak.

Figures from the Mubarak era can be found throughout Shafiq’s campaign team.

Former aides and deputies who worked for him when he was the country’s minister of civil aviation, from 2002 to 2011, are running Shafiq’s campaign. His campaign manager is Ibrahim Manna, who succeeded Shafiq as minister of civil aviation under Mubarak. His campaign coordinator, Mohammed Qadri, was his deputy at the ministry and has remained

with him since.

Other support has come from wealthy businessmen whose companies had close ties to the Mubarak government. A production company owned by Mahmoud Baraka, which also produces shows for state television, donated its services to the campaign. An advertising firm run by Tarek Nour, which designed materials for Mubarak’s presidential campaign in 2005,

designed Shafiq’s billboards.

Shafiq did not declare his candidacy until April, much later than his rivals. The idea that he could become president was at first dismissed by the secular forces who took the lead in Egypt’s revolution as well as by Islamists, who assumed that anyone so closely tied to the regime could not fare well in the balloting.

Egyptian TV’s News Sector, headed by Ibrahim Al-Sayyad, has finalized preparations for a new form of televised elections confrontation to be held between Dr. Mohamed Morsi, candidate for the presidency in the run-off elections, and presidential candidate General Ahmed Shafiq. This is to be broadcast live on Tuesday, June 12.

Candidates refused a ‘traditional’ face-to-face debate. So, it is now scheduled for each candidate to be interviewed separately, with broadcasters selected from the Federation of Radio

and TV news sector. Those would ask the same questions, in the same context, at the same time, live.

TV presenters Sharif Fouad and Ahmed Bosayla are to interview Dr. Mohamed Morsi, with the live broadcast starting from 10PM on TV channels 1 and 2. Meanwhile, Atef Kamel and Amr Shenawi will interview General Ahmed Shafiq, live on satellite TV channels Almasriya and Nile News. Then, the two interviews are broadcast once again, switching channels, from 12 midnight.

Ahmed Anis, Minister of Information, had invited both candidates for a televised live debate, but they declined. It was then agreed that the face-off would substitute a direct debate, providing the same opportunities to both candidates, while committing to high standards of transparency on Egyptian television.

Presidential elections are only one stage. We should focus on what’s next, which will determine the

course of the revolution. How can we put pressure on the coming president no matter who comes to

office?

This is not the end of the revolution. The two final contenders, Shafiq and Morsi, are worse than

each other but we will continue our revolution until we achieve our dream.
