However, the Muslim Brotherhood rejected the conditions imposed by a number of political and revolution players to back Muhammad Mursi in the presidential elections. A number of political parties and activists visited yesterday the Muslim Brotherhood suggesting what they called “the initiative to save the revolution.” The initiative includes four points; one of them is a call for Muhammad Mursi to withdraw from the race in favor of Sabbahi.

Dozens of candidate Sabbahi demonstrated in Tahrir Square last night to protest the elections results.

The People’s Assembly Divided

MP Mustafa Bakri applied a demand to Speaker of the People’s Assembly Saad al-Katatni, calling him for an urgent discussion of the emergency law that is to be completely lifted on Thursday.

MP Bakri clarified that SCAF came to power, to manage the nation’s affairs, by the emergency law. A number of MPs called for keeping the emergency law effectuated for a longer time; until a president is elected.

Other MPs rejected the idea. MP Muhammad al-Umdah, deputy of the Legislative Committee at the People’s Assembly, said SCAF’s being in power was not linked to the emergency law but to the transitional period and the Constitutional Declaration according to which SCAF took the responsibilities of ruling the nation.

Illegal MB Deals With US

Al-Dostour newspaper allocated a full page to discuss the alleged illegitimate history of secret deals between the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and US, with the following main points:

The history of the US deals with MB backs to the era of late Egyptian president Gamal Abdel-Nasser, as the US used the MB to try to overthrow Abdel-Nasser, who was at the time an ally to the Soviet Union.

A political thinker said US President Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo in 2004 shows that Obama has a deal with the MB.

Head of Al-Tagammu Party believes that the MB has been receiving funding from the US since 1936.

Human Events Magazine said that after September 11 incidents, the F.B.I conducted calls and ties with anti-US Islamists.

Now the US does not fear an MB takeover of the presidency as the group vowed to honor the peace treaty with Israel and all the other international treaties.

50 Lawsuits Haunt Shafiq and Morsi before the Runoff

A flood of lawsuits demanding to exclude the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate Mohamed Morsi and former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq from the presidential race and suspend the runoff.

The Supreme Administrative Court received yesterday nearly 5 new lawsuits

demanding the court to suspend presidential elections, which adds up to another 50 lawsuits previously filed for the same purpose. They all demanded delaying the runoff stage until the court examines all the cases and issue its decision.

The lawsuits were filed against Head of the Presidential Elections Commission Farouk

Soltan and Head of SCAF Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi accusing them of violating the Political Isolation Law by allowing former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq to run in presidential elections. Lawyers confirmed that Shafiq was part of the former Mubarak regime and thus he should have been disqualified from the presidential race.

She confirmed that many countries around the world praised the first round of

presidential elections including former US President Jimmy Carter. “We will remain neutral to all the candidates during the process of elections. We have

suffered for a long time from the executive authority’s interference in the course of elections and this is why we insist on neutrality,” said Minister of Tourism Mounir Fakhry Abd Al-Nour.

Saleh: MB Will Not Provide Assurances to Political Forces

Various political forces and movements demanded the Muslim Brotherhood to provide assurances that they will not monopolize the country’s political sphere. They demanded the MB to include other political forces in the formation of the new government, if Mohamed Morsi came to power.

Deputy of the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee Sobhi Salah responded

to these demands by saying, “The Muslim Brotherhood is not forces of occupation to provide assurances to the people, and I personally refuse such calls.”

Saleh denied that the MB will take off to the streets in case Ahmed Shafik won the

presidential elections. “If Shafik won presidential elections, provided that it is held in a transparent and integral manner, we will respect the will of the people and we will not take off to the streets,” Saleh said.

No Decisions on Constitutionality of Political Isolation Law before Runoff

Senior judicial sources said the Supreme Constitutional Court cannot issue its decision on the constitutionality of the Political Isolation Law before the runoff. Source said that the court is now hearing the arguments of the two rivals, Dr. Shawki Al-Sayed and Ahmed Shafik’s lawyer, and this stage of the trial will be concluded on June 12. The next stage will include oral hearings on the constitutionality of the law before the State Commissioners Authority. One of the senior judges of the State Commissioners Authority will prepare a detailed report on the issue and present it to the Supreme Constitutional Court.

Sources confirmed that it is impossible for the court to take a decision on the

constitutionality of the law before the runoff phase of presidential elections on June 17. The State Commissioners Authority had issued a previous report confirming the

unconstitutionality of the Political Isolation Law.

Sabahy: No Deals with Former Regime Remnants or Religious Authoritarians

Presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy said he will not accept any official positions in case he was not qualified for the runoff. “It will be one of two scenarios; either I continue the presidential race and face one of the presidential candidates during the runoff, and I will be able to sweep the elections, or I will be excluded from the runoff and I will continue on the revolution’s track.”

Sabahy called on all political and revolutionary forces to unite and place the interests of

the country on top of all other ideological and partisan considerations. “The revolution will continue and will succeed. For those who claim the revolution has

come to an end, I tell them this will only happen in your dreams!” said Sabahy.

Amr Moussa, one of the presidential candidates who did not make it to the runoff, said he had not yet made up his mind on who to support in the runoff: the Mubarak-era prime minister Ahmed Shafiq or the Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi.

Speaking at a press conference Monday, Moussa said he did not contact any of the two and would not accept any political posts.

Moussa said he would mull some future options, like setting up a new political party or accepting the honorary leadership of an existing party that had supported his presidential bid.

He affirmed he would continue to be present in the political scene.

Morsi and Shafiq Officially in Runoff

The High Presidential Elections Commission (HPEC) announced the final results of the first round of the Egyptian presidential elections on Monday.

HPEC Chairman Counselor Farouq Sultan said the two candidates to face each other in the runoff will be former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq and Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi.

Morsi garnered in the first round 5,764,952 votes, while Shafiq got 5,505,327, Sultan said.

The voter turnout during the first round was 46.42%, meaning that 23,672,036 voters cast their ballots out of the eligible 50,996,746, he said.

As many as 400,720 votes were invalid, he noted.

Sultan also denied the inclusion of the names of 900,000 police and army officers in voter lists.

Tahrir Protesters Say No to Morsi and Shafiq

Hundreds of protesters flocked to Cairo’s iconic Tahrir Square on Monday night to call for enforcing the disenfranchisement law on presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister during the Mubarak era, and excluding him from the runoff.

The protesters held banners that read “the revolution continues and glory to the martyrs” and “Egypt is choosing between greed and murder.” By greed, they were referring to the other runoff candidate, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

They also chanted “No to the remnants of the former regime and no to the Muslim Brotherhood.” They also called for bringing down the rule of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

Traffic in the square was halted due to the large number of protesters.

The High Presidential Elections Commission has announced the final results of the first round of the presidential polls on Monday, declaring that Shafiq and Morsi will face neck-and-neck in the runoff, which will take place on June 16 and 17.

April 6 Has No Candidate for VP

The April 6 Youth Movement has no candidate in mind to hold the post of the vice president or any posts in the new government for that matter, said movement general coordinator Ahmed Maher.

Certain names should not be enforced upon the Freedom and Justice Party, whose candidate Mohamed Morsi will be competing in the runoff, as consensus among all revolutionary powers should be reached on the formation of the government, Maher said in an interview with Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr.

The Muslim Brotherhood should offer assurances to all revolutionary powers that it would not manipulate power should its candidate Morsi wins the presidential race, Maher said.

However, the prime minister should be a figure that does not belong to the Muslim Brotherhood, he said.

Civil defense forces managed to contain a fire that erupted in the HQ of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq in the Giza neighborhood of Dokki on Monday night.

The police arrested eight people in connection with the fire.

Thousands of protesters from several revolutionary powers and coalitions swarmed Cairo’s Tahrir Square to announce their rejection of the results of the polls.

Khaled Ali, who lost in the first round of the polls, took part in the protests.

Protests in Alexandria and Suez also erupted over the results.

Press Release No. 12 of Dr. Morsi Central Campaign

Presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Morsi’s campaign managers express their sincere thanks and deep appreciation and gratitude to the great Egyptian people who gave us their confidence and put our candidate in the first place among contenders in the presidential race. According to the announcement made by the Supreme Presidential Elections Committee (SPEC), the final overall vote count of our candidate, from all 27 provinces of Egypt, amounted to 5,764,952 votes (five million, seven hundred and sixty-four thousand, and fifty-two votes), although the electoral process was marred by some violations and irregularities. Thus, the official result revealed that Dr. Morsi will face a runoff against former regime hangovers. Further, some media outlets reported that protesters burned down the headquarters of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq’s campaign in Dokki. A number of these media outlets claim that the burning the headquarters was carried out by the electoral campaigns of presidential candidates Mohamed Morsi and Hamdeen Sabbahi. In fact, the campaign declares that it had nothing to do with what happened to Shafiq’s campaign headquarters in any way whatsoever. Dr. Mohamed Morsi will hold a press conference later today, Tuesday - May 29, 2012 at 12 noon at the Radisson Blu Hotel Masakin Sheraton. In this conference, Dr. Morsi will present his vision for the next stage and how honorable partners of the homeland – of all leanings and orientations – can take part in it.

Dr. Mohamed Morsi’s campaign calls on all citizens to avoid malicious rumors designed to undermine the revolution and vilify its symbols in order to frustrate the people and lead some into the heinous clutches of the counter-revolution, dragging the country back to the darkness, repression and despotism of the corrupt former regime. Finally, the campaign calls on media outlets to commit to values of accuracy when reporting or publishing anything about the campaign of Dr. Morsi. We ask them to please contact the campaign media and information center, instead of publishing or reporting any news from dubious or untrustworthy sources.

As usual we will keep arguing over who burnt down Shafiq’s campaign headquarters and whether it is right or wrong and forget the main issue.

Now is not the time for disagreements, we must unite to achieve the goals of the revolution.
