Martyrs’ Defense Team Demand Questioning Tantawi

The 13th session of the trial of former Egyptian president Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, his two sons Alaa and Gamal, former minister of interior Habib Al-Adli, and six of his security officials, has seen many surprises.

There were quarrels between civil-rights lawyers over the request to call Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Lieutenant General Sami Anan and a number of senior security officials, particularly Omar Suleiman, into questioning. “We do not want to hear their previous testimonies but we want to question them over their recent statements on the involvement of a third party,” one of the lawyers said. Also, one of the lawyers presented a CD describing it as the strongest exhibit as it contains scenes of deliberate killing of peaceful protesters by police forces.

The Police Academy, where the trial is being held, witnessed strict security measures. The former president was transferred from the International Medical Center to the Police Academy on a helicopter. The Torah prisoners arrived to the place in armored vehicles.

One of the photographers was able to take a picture for Al-Adli walking freely outside the trial hall without handcuffs.

Public Prosecution made a huge surprise when the prosecutor said that they are not directing any accusations against Mubarak and his cronies related to the killings that took place near police stations. They said this matter will be examined before other courts to investigate into each case individually.

Lawyers of all defendants, except General Ismail El-Sha’er and Habib Al-Adli, waived their right to question witnesses. Farid Al-Deib, Mubarak’s lawyer, said he is ready to present his defense whenever the court decides to hear it. He only requested a copy of the Public Funds Prosecution’s document over the allocation of state’s lands in Sinai.
