Fresh veg to your doorstepThere’s no beating local, organic, seasonal produce. It’s healthier, more affordable, and tastier too! A veg box scheme offers all this, and even better it’s delivered straight to your door.

Riverford is one of the UK’s largest veg box schemes, offering a wide range of organic produce, and maintaining a very local offering through a network of regional farms and local growers.

Riverford’s founder, Guy Watson, started delivering vegetables locally to 30 friends in Devon. The company now delivers around 40,000 boxes a week to homes around the UK.

Riverford customers value the freshness of their seasonal produce and the fantastic flavour of food grown without chemical fertilizers and preservatives.

The range of food you can get in your box includes fresh veg and fruit, dairy, preserves and free range meat.

Visit www.riverford.co.uk/sacrewell or call 01780 789700 to find out more.

Riverford's recipe of the month: Roasted Asparagus with Hazelnut Dressing [Serves 4]

Ingredients: 750g asparagus | 75g whole hazelnuts |3 tbsp olive oil | 2 tbsp hazelnut/walnut oil | 1 tbsp white wine or balsamic vinegar | salt + pepper

1. Preheat oven to 180˚C/gas mark 5. 2. Toast hazelnuts on a baking tray

in oven for about 10 mins. 3. Remove from oven. Increase

temp to 220˚C/gas mark 74. Place nuts in a clean tea towel, fold over and

rub to remove the skin. Coarsely chop. 5. For the dressing whisk the nut oil, half the

olive oil with salt, pepper and vinegar.6. Place asparagus spears on a baking tray and

toss with remaining oil, salt and pepper. 7. Roast in oven for about 12 mins, until

lightly browning and tender. 8. Serve asparagus with a drizzle of

dressing and a sprinkle of hazelnuts.

Catch a train from Kings HeathHow would you like to catch a train from Kings Heath in to the city centre? Right now your best bet is to hop over the fence behind Homebase and lasso a passing freight train.

So why not try it? Basically, because it’s a daft idea. Especially when there might be better way.

There used to be a station at Kings Heath exactly on that spot, but it was closed in 1941 due to the Second World War would you believe it. ‘Progress’ since then has turned the Alcester Road into a car park twice a day with limited public transport alternatives.

Aside from the impossibility of boarding a train that doesn’t stop at a non-existent platform, those freight trains head for a too-busy New Street on a very round-about route. This is actually more of a problem than building a station, which would be relatively cheap. To solve it what’s needed is a little short-cut of track called a ‘chord’, so trains could turn north, dropping you and I off at Moor Street station. The journey would take just 7 minutes. Simple.

Page 13: MKH May 2012

13

So don’t some engineers need to sit down with some planners and simply draw it all out? Of course, but they did all that so long ago they probably used actual pencils. Everyone who cares – politicians, Network Rail, Centro – know exactly where this chord has to go, as well as how much it would cost and how long it would take to build.

And when might this glorious vision of the future arrive? Somewhat predictably, it’s been delayed. Funding for the railways is divided into five-year blocks; the next one will be 2014-2019. Centro are apparently eager to get the line built and start making money, but Network Rail, responsible for any building, aren’t so keen. In fact, it’s looking likely that the project will get pushed back to the 2019-2024 period.

Joe Peacock, a campaigner at Birmingham Friends of the Earth, is no stranger to these problems. “This is an issue we’ve already run at least three major campaigns on and gained huge support for, so the building of the chords really should be underway now. When politicians, businesses, residents groups and environmental campaigners are all behind a scheme, we fail to see why it should be so hard to get it funded.”

The only way to get the building started is to keep the pressure up on everyone involved. If a candidate for May elections knocks on your door, why not raise the issue with them then? And there’s

a facebook campaign to keep updated on what’s happening in the meantime.

So, while lassoing speeding trains is definitely a daft idea, it’s only just slightly less crazy than the way decisions are made about the railways.

Kings Heath in 1897In honour of the Queen’s diamond jubilee The Kings Heath Local History Society is focusing on the celebrations in Kings Heath of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee in 1897.

The meeting is on 16 May and open for anyone to attend for the small fee of £2.

At the event the committee will be looking at how the residents of Kings Heath celebrated the diamond jubilee. They will also be looking at how the population of the area changed throughout the reign of Queen Victoria.

1897 was also a busy time in the life of the village of Kings Heath. It was a time when new buildings were being built and old buildings were being replaced. For example, the old Cross Guns Inn, dating from 1792, was no longer considered large enough or spectacular enough for the ever growing population of Kings Heath. In 1897 the old Inn, pear tree and all, was knocked down and a new pub was built in its place. This new pub still stands on Kings Heath High Street, on the same spot as the old Inn, but has changed its name to the Goose.

The biggest development of the time was the Grange Estate. The Grange was a large house that stood where Grange Road now runs. It was knocked down in 1896 and the estate including the new roads of Grange Road, Station Road, Westfield Road, Highbury Road, York Road, Waterloo Road and South Road were laid out and developed throughout 1896 and 1897. This attracted new many new residents to the small village of Kings Heath.

Kings Heath Local History Society meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Kings Heath Community Centre in Heathfield Road. The meetings run from 7.30pm - 9.00pm.

What a strange spring we've hadFirst we had record temperatures in March and drought warnings, and then we had snow, hail and heavy showers in April”, says Julia Watkins of Lupin Gardens.

“Many people will feel overwhelmed by the sudden growth and early flowering in their gardens. But now is the time to get on top of it all, before it really does become unmanageable.

“Mow and edge your lawns, cut down any herbaceous growth left over from last year, and weed, weed, weed. Perennial weeds, such as bindweed and couch grass need to be dug out – pulling the tops off them only propagates them further. And mulch. If the drought

continues, you may not be able to water in summer – water the area thoroughly, and use woodchips for woodland plants and compost or gravel for sun-lovers”.

And Julia should know. For ten years, she and her business partner, Susan Brown, have run Lupin Gardens – planning, designing, landscaping and maintaining over 150 Birmingham gardens. This horticulturally-trained pair have overseen the development and maintenance of many outdoor spaces – from the

Page 17: MKH May 2012

17

smallest urban courtyard, to large established private grounds.

Busier than ever, Susan feels the key to their success is two-fold. “Firstly, we offer a wide range of services – anything from a one-off tidy up or regular maintenance, to large design and planting work. We can come in and tidy or plant the smallest border, or we can redesign a whole garden.

The second reason for Lupin’s continued growth appears to be their business model. “We didn’t intend this to happen” says Susan, “but as we expanded, we took on more women. It seems that we filled a gap – not just for our workers, who we train to the highest standard, but for our clients as well. People trust us to let ourselves in, to keep hold of keys, to be responsible, hard-working and professional on site, and to leave the gardens looking immaculate.”

What more could you ask for?

Middle Earth Weekend 2012Celebrating 75 years of “The Hobbit” this year’s free Tolkien festival is on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May 11am-5pm at Sarehole Mill within The Shire Country Park.

This year sees the 75th anniversary since the publication of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. It seems fitting, therefore, to celebrate this event with all things Hobbity.

Second breakfasts will of course be available throughout the weekend!

The outdoor festival features archery, dragons, drama, re-enactments and medieval crafts, but festival planners also hope to introduce some interesting new activities to the weekend this year.

Last year saw the launch of a photographic competition based around ‘Trees and Leaves of Middle-Earth’.

This was a very successful contest with entries from all over the world. The many entries were examined and 12 finalists chosen. The calendar has now been created and this is available online at www.middleearthweekend.org.uk

You can support the festival by buying a copy of ‘Tales from Moseley Bog’ by Vivienne Wilkes, suitable for 7-10 year olds - all proceeds (less postage and packaging) will be going towards the weekend. Set within Moseley Bog and the surroundings of Sarehole Mill, the story relates the adventures of two young field voles and their desperate quest to find ‘the voles of

Page 21: MKH May 2012

21

old’. You can buy the book online at www.middleearthweekend.org.uk

Entry to the festival is free and it is also free to go into Sarehole Mill during the festival weekend. This is a fantastic family friendly local free event so make sure you put the date in your diary right now!

The event is held at Sarehole Mill Recreation Ground, Sarehole Mill, Cole Bank Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, B13 0BD.

If you don’t live close enough to walk you can park your car in the field opposite the mill for a small charge, or catch the number 11 bus which stops right outside the mill.

Dads Lane Allotments awarded £10,000 fundingDads Lane Allotments have received £10,000 from Big Lottery Fund for a composting toilet and pavilion.

After almost 90 years, Dads Lane Allotments is to have toilet facilities, and a pavilion for plot holders to use as a meeting place, where they can swap seeds and recipes over a cuppa. Work will commence in mid April and the official opening will be at the annual open day on 24th June. The area adjacent to the new facilities will become a communal garden and wildlife area.

89 year old Jack Stainton, the allotments’ oldest gardener who rarely misses a day on his plot is delighted at the award. He explained that whilst he lives very close to the allotment site he welcomed the news for the sake of the majority of plot-holders, particularly those with young families, who have

to limit their gardening time due to the current lack of toilet facilities.

Derry Harkin, who with his wife Jill and two young daughters have had a plot for around 5 years agreed wholeheartedly. “This will make a tremendous difference. We’d love to spend more time on our plot and the new facilities will enable us to do just that. The girls are really excited at the thought of being able to spend a full day on the allotment. We’ll really be able to keep on top of things now.”

The allotments have been in existence since the 1920s and there are currently 60 plot-holders growing fruit, vegetables and flowers.
