New kid on the blockThere’s a new place to see and be seen in Kings Heath – Fletchers bar on York Road opens on 5 July.

Fletchers is a chic and stylish bar with a retro industrial look, complemented by gorgeous vintage fabrics and walls, and an imaginative use of lighting. You would not believe the transformation from the slightly scruffy, homely Cornerstones Café it used to be to the sexy, funky bar it has now become.

The bar offers a range of good wines and real ales and serves cocktails if that’s what you fancy. You can also get something to eat from their mouth-watering menu.

There is comfy sofa seating as well as high bar stools, and an intimate outside walled courtyard area for those balmy summer evenings (we should get one or two).

Before it even opened Fletchers was chosen to host the launch of the Kings Heath Walk of Fame at the end

of June with live bands performing throughout the afternoon.

You can expect to find regular live music, comedy and cabaret as well as quiz nights and wine tasting events at Fletchers. It is a great place for a quick after work drink, romantic night out, or a boozy evening with your friends.

This fabulous addition to the already buzzing nightlife on York Road has been launched by local businesswoman Tracy Fletcher who runs the Kitchen Garden Café in partnership with Brett Rehling.

Opening times

Fletchers is open evenings and weekends, Thursday-Saturday until 1pm, Sunday-Wednesday until 11pm.

The simple pleasures in a vegboxI have been receiving a weekly vegbox from Riverford Organics for several months now as an experiment and the experience has been most enjoyable.

Every week I check what’s in the box online and then arrange my other shopping around it. And what has surprised me is how creative it has made me in the kitchen. I have discovered new and delicious vegetables and learned new ways to cook.

I might be easy to please, but I do get a thrill when I open my front door and there is a lovely box of healthy shiny fruit and vegetables on the doorstep.

This week, for example I have cherries, bananas and satsumas for the fruit bowl, and broad beans in their shells, mushrooms, romano peppers, tomatoes, swiss chard and courgettes. Some weeks I get more ordinary vegetables like onions, potatoes and carrots but the contents of the box varies

completely from week to week.

Also within the box there is usually a recipe card which includes a few suggested recipes for this week’s veg.

Riverford has loads of different veg and fruit boxes to choose from, I have gone for the medium fruit and veg box which seems to be working out just fine. You can also add other things into your box – last week I bought some lovely organic ham, sheep’s cheese and home-made homity pies.

I like getting a vegbox because I feel immense satisfaction feeding my family healthy, nutritious food. And having it delivered to my door certainly beats dragging my children round the supermarket!

Kings Heath Library roof to be repairedHooray! Kings Heath Library roof is finally being repaired.

All the skylights will be replaced and the flat roof restored meaning the library will once again have natural light.

The library previously closed during the winter of 2010/11, when heavy snow threatened to collapse the skylights of the listed building onto the bookshelves beneath. It was closed without notice for safety reasons, leaving regular visitors to wonder when or if it might re-open.

Although it was reopened last March, visitors and staff have had to negotiate their way around scaffolding since

then. Now that the repairs are to go ahead, the library will need to close for around three weeks in June and July, starting on Monday 25 June.

Returning Books

During this period you can return your books to any Birmingham library or Kings Heath Community Centre on Heathfield Road. You can renew their books over the phone with any Birmingham library or online via www.birmingham.gov.uk – remember you will need your PIN to do this.

Tooth WhiteningIf you have ever wondered about tooth whitening then wonder no more, local dental surgeon Dr Ahmed Farooq explains all.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a process used to chemically alter the colour of teeth. This is achieved by removing stains and discolouration by adding a whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) to the tooth surface. This results in the tooth looking whiter and gives an overall more youthful appearance.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

The dazzling movie star teeth that you might see on TV are not a natural colour. Just because your teeth aren’t as white as those Hollywood smiles, do not assume that they are discoloured. There is a natural variation in the colour of teeth from person to person.

Age and lifestyle factors are the main reasons for tooth discolouration. As you get older, the teeth become darker

due to natural erosion and exposure of the inner surface of the teeth (dentine), which is darker. The gums also recede with age, showing more root surface, which again tends to be a darker colour. The foods and drinks we consume also play a part. Drinks like red wine, tea and coffee can cause staining. Tar and nicotine from cigarette smoke are also major contributors.

How white will my teeth become with chemical whitening?

The answer to this question is dependant on several factors. To start off with, as mentioned earlier, our age, lifestyle and natural tooth colour varies. For this reason, the effects of tooth whitening will vary. Most people, however, will respond very well to whitening treatments depending on what method is used. There are a small group of individuals who may only notice a small difference. The best person to advise you on your likely result

Page 17: MKH July 2012

17Please mention My Kings Heath when responding to adverts

will be your dentist. They will note your tooth colour before starting treatment, and they will try to estimate an outcome.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Tooth whitening is very safe when used under careful instructions from the dentist.

The agent used comes in a gel form, which should not come into contact with the gums, as this may cause discoloration or burns. Most people experience no adverse reactions, but some patients may develop some sensitivity around the time of treatment depending on the strength of agent and method used. This can be easily resolved by using some sensitive toothpaste to mask the effect and by avoiding hot or cold food for 48 hours.

What are the benefits of tooth whitening?

Whitening is now relatively cheap and easily accessible from your dentist. The main benefit is a healthier looking smile without removing any of the tooth structure. Whitening is a much more conservative approach to changing a smile compared to crowns and veneers, as these methods result in changing the shape of the tooth.

Do you love adventure and hanging out with friends? That’s the reason Bear Grylls gives for volunteering as Chief Scout. If you want more excitement in your life and would like to give something back to the next generation then read on.

Does the idea of fire-lighting, den building, water sports, orienteering and survival skills give you a bit of a buzz? Then this opportunity will be right up your street. Moseley Scout Group needs a handful of volunteers to help lighten the load for the existing team of 12 leaders and parent helpers.

Volunteering with the scouts is an immensely rewarding experience and completely flexible. So you can give as much or as little time as you can, when it is convenient for you. You will get free training – which takes up 2-3 days at the most and includes things like an introduction to scouting history and ethos, child protection and health and safety.

When qualified, you will typically help out at Beaver, Cub or Scout sections. And really, the icing on the cake is the chance to help out on camp events, night time wide games, and you can put your name forward for the international scouting jamboree which happens every 4 years and attracts thousands of scouts from all over the world.

Moseley 220th Scout Group meets at St Agnes Church Hall on the corner of Billesley Lane and Dyott Road.

For more information please call the Group Chairman on 07813 700 923. For more information about the Scout Association go to www.scouts.org.uk

Instead, over the last 10 years it has raised over £1million for each of its Three Local Charities – Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and Focus Birmingham. The charities jointly own TLC and the proceeds are split equally three ways.

Regularly spotted at local Supermarkets and Garden Centres, the small team at TLC have seen lottery membership grow steadily despite the current economic gloom.

It’s only £1 per weekly entry and you can win £1,000 every week or one of the other 162 cash prizes ranging from £5 to £100. You are also entered into the Rollover Jackpot which, if not won, increases by £250 per week up to a maximum prize of £10,000.

Win or lose, the Three Local Charities are always winners, receiving funds from TLC each month so the money can be put to good use without delay.

TLC made total charitable distributions of over £456,000 in 2011, so every £1 weekly entry really does count and make a difference to local people.

This covered all the catering costs across the three Acorns Children’s Hospices, paid for 4,500 hours of nursing care at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and funded the purchase & running costs of minibuses at Focus Birmingham.

Kings Heath Walk of FameWe may think York Road is pretty cool these days but it pales in comparison with the York Road of the 60s when the Ritz Ballroom was in its heyday.

An amazing list of top musicians and comedians were either born, lived in or performed in Kings Heath and the Ritz was at the centre of it all. People like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, The Kinks, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmy Cliff and Gene Vincent all performed there back in the 60s. And a local music enthusiast is determined this rich musical heritage will not be lost in the mists of time.

Ken Whitaker started his campaign with an article in the Birmingham Mail calling on people to send in their memories of the Ritz and he now has a wealth of stories and memories and has launched the Kings Heath Walk of Fame.

On 27 June the Lord Mayor unveiled the first commemorative Birmingham Civic Society Music Plate on York Road at Cash Converters which was formerly the Ritz Ballroom. This will complement the existing Performance Rights Society’s performance birthplace plaque for UB40.

On 16 July Toyah Willcox will be the first star to unveil her very own pavement plaque on York Road and will perform live at the Hare and Hounds that evening.

The plan is for 30 pavement plaques, all on York Road, to be unveiled over the next two years including the likes of UB40, Frank Skinner and Robert Plant.

Putting the pleasure back into food shoppingKings Heath Farmers’ Market moved to the stunning new village square late last year and what a difference it has made.

There is now room for more stalls – and since the move the stall numbers have been steadily increasing - there are now 25. And there is lots of open space which makes it an altogether more enjoyable place to be, especially on a pleasant summer’s day.

After a number of years struggling to keep the market going, particularly during the seven months when it was in

the temporary location of the car park behind the new All Saints Centre, the loyal core of 12-15 stallholders have been boosted by a further 10 stalls making it a lively vibrant market where you can buy everything you need for your weekly shop.

Local people flock to the market every first Saturday of the month to stock up on everything from bread to beer.

Page 27: MKH July 2012

If your shopping list looks something like this then you will be able to tick everything off at Kings Heath Farmers Market.

* Meat – something nice for Sunday lunch

* Poultry – a good weekday dinner

* Fish – whatever looks good* Cheese – cheddar and

something special* Goats cheese – for

a bit of a change* Eggs – need enough for

a cake and breakfasts* Bread and pastries – a

nice large granary* Fruit and vegetables –

good fruit bowl, salad, roasting and soup veg

* Plants – put some colour into the front garden

* Honey and beeswax – need a present for my sister

* Garlic and olives – nibbles for friends

* Game – for that dinner party coming up

* Beer and wine – something for tonight

* Handmade chocolates – a treat for the kids

* Ground coffee and loose teas – some nice coffee

And while you go around buying locally grown and sourced produce you can get a spot of lunch on the go – unless you are able to ignore the tempting smells and sights of delightful home made food including samosas and pakoras, home made Italian food and South East Asian food.

Not only is it good to buy food with a low carbon footprint and support local farmers – it is a leisurely, enjoyable day out where you may even bump into friends and have the time to catch up with their news. A far cry from the usual stressful supermarket dash.

Steve Bairstow, one of the market organisers said: “Kings Heath is a perfect location for a farmers’ market, being on the number 50 bus route, the busiest route in Europe, and also the number 11 bus route. And with the new village square location we have room for at least 40 stalls which is a target we are now working towards.

“Moving to the new location has put us at the very heart of the local community providing a valuable meeting place and bringing people together. We look forward to a bright future of growth and success.”

Kings Heath Farmers Market is on the first Saturday of the month from 9am until 3.30pm. It is run by Kings Heath Business Association a group of local businesses who aim to make a difference to the local community and to Kings Heath.
