Ordinary House wife and Kings Heath resident.

I do hope the weather bucks up . People are saying its the worse ever but really you know it`s not been very good since 2006 .There are kids under seven who don’t know what a Summer is !

For me a very good local Summer activity that doesn’t cost much is the Open Gardens in Moseley . A chance for the likes of me to have a short hop on the no 50 bus and a good nosey into the back gardens ( and kitchens if you are lucky enough ) of the great and good of Moseley . It`s a case of rather you than me though as I think it must be a lot of hard work and I wouldn’t want the pressure* – but thanks very much to those that do it.

Not a lot of people know that there is an annual front garden competition in Kings Heath . A team of judges go up and down the streets and choose bronze, silver and gold winners . I asked if it has to be posh planting or have you got a chance with geraniums and lobelia and they said “Yes “ – so like you I am none the wiser .

All the very best

Barbara xx* I`ve heard a lot of couples who show their gardens have to go to relate after .

See Barbara Nice live in her Summer Special at mac Birmingham on 26 July.

Go to www.macarts.co.uk for tickets.

Hiya - Barbara Nice here – that's Barbara as in Streisand Nice as in the Biscuit !

Do you employ people?

Employment law can be a minefield, especially for small businesses run by busy owner managers.

And with recent and planned changes in the law, coupled with the poor economic climate, now more than ever employers need to ensure they comply with the relevant legislation. In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature we meet Kate Garrett, Solicitor who specialises in employment law acting on behalf of both employers and employees.

Kate often meets new clients when they have reached a crisis point, faced for example with the threat of a tribunal claim such as unfair dismissal.

Her advice to employers is to obtain legal advice prior to making any decisions which will affect employees. It may only take a couple of hours to obtain legal advice which, when compared to the time and cost involved in defending a tribunal claim, is time and money well spent.

Much of Kate’s advice is pure common sense but she is surprised by how often basic practices and procedures are ignored by employers for example, the requirement for employees to receive a Written Statement of the main terms and conditions of employment within two calendar months of starting work. And if a business is looking to reduce pay or hours there needs to be a formal two-way consultation process.

Finally Kate stresses that when faced with a disgruntled employee or ex-employee there is an alternative to going through a tribunal. In some cases a Compromise Agreement can be

used removing the need to attend the tribunal. A Compromise Agreement may sometimes be a difficult choice to make when emotions are running high – but they can potentially reduce the overall cost to the employer.

Kate will always look at her clients’ problems on an individual basis and help them find the most practical and economical way of sorting them out.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Kate on 0121 693 2222

If you are interested in employment law issues then you can read Kate’s blog by going to http://tyndallwoods.co.uk/category/blog/

Brum Yum Yum

Summer of 1960's Music Nostalgia Defiant organisers of the King’s Heath Walk of Fame are determined not to let the fire that destroyed the former Ritz Ballroom spoil their plans to celebrate King’s Heath’s amazing musical heritage this summer.

Birmingham’s First & Only Authentic Streetfood Market has chosen Kings Heath Village Square for its home!

Already huge in London, new wave streetfood is all about good food at decent prices.

Every month, a sizzling selection of the UK’s hottest streetchefs & the new crop of local streetfood heroes bring you dishes cooked to order right in front of you from the freshest local ingredients.

All served up from vintage vehicles & funky stands, garnished with interesting drinks, rare street music and a unique street market vibe!

A whole series of events are planned throughout the summer including:-

monthly Lazy Sunday Afternoon sessions at Fletchers Bar directly opposite the former Ritz Ballroom themed around artists who played at The Ritz

June 9 - Rock ‘n Revival commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Gene Vincent playing The Ritz

July 7 - All things Kinky commemorating The Kinks performance at The Ritz

Aug 4 - Girls Afternoon Out commemorating, Dusty Springfield,

Sandie Shaw, Helen Shapiro and Cilla Black who all played at the Ritz.

Kings Heath is geared up to be the 'Espirito' of summer.

An annual celebration of music and art is set to be the centre piece of a host of cultural activity in Kings Heath this summer.

Espirito Brum is hitting Birmingham for the third year running – and this year will make its home in Kings Heath.

The annual celebration will include live music, contemporary performance art, cinema screenings, free workshops, family activities, art installations and a charity art auction.

Kings Heath venues have come out in force to support the activities, with The Hare and Hounds, Loco Lounge, All Saint’s Church centre and Kings Heath Village Square all hosting events throughout the summer.

As well as becoming the home of Espirito Brum 2013, Kings Heath has a whole host of activities to look out for. We have Brumyumyum – a fantastic new street food market held in the village square every second Saturday of the month, the Community Cinema, the Farmers Market and the Vintage Flea Market and Kings Heath Walk of Fame events too.

For more information on the events that are taking place during Espirito Brum, please visit:

Local lottery supports local charityTLC Lottery has provided vital income for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in the past 12 months, funding much-needed care in the community.

Thanks to over £130,000 raised last year through TLC, the Hospice’s Community Palliative Care Team has been able to make 985 visits to patients in their own homes.

This is an amazing figure and enables the Selly Park-based charity to help people live better with their conditions, which range from cancer and multiple sclerosis to motor neurone disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The Team’s Clinical Nurse Specialists make a difference to people with terminal illnesses through

their extensive experience and knowledge of palliative care.

They work with and advise GPs and community nurses to make sure patients have effective symptom relief and provide psychological support to patients and families referred to them.

The Team also acts as a link between the community and the Hospice’s other services, so if and when a person’s condition does change more intensive services can be made available quickly.
