Summer FunThe long summer days are stretching out ahead of us and the burning question is what to do with the kids?

We are lucky to have the mac on our doorstep which not only is conveniently located in Cannon Hill Park but also has a summer programme absolutely stuffed with fun things to do for kids of all ages (and adults too). So come rain or shine there is something for everyone.

Age 2-5 years

If you are charged with entertaining pre-school children then fear not, mac has some lovely art play workshops which encourage the exploration of art and the outdoors. With them you can discover different visual art forms, textures and creativity and learn different techniques and imaginative ways to use 2D and 3D materials at home.

There is also a baby and toddler art group, family yoga and story making, where your child can explore their imagination through creativity laughter and play.

Age 6 - 11

There are also opportunities for family art and play with your primary school age children. With them you can explore pottery, drawing and painting, animation and making digital music.

There are a series of costume making workshops where you can learn about characters from history and make your own costume to take away.

Page 11: MKH Aug 2011

11Please mention My Kings Heath when responding to adverts

Themes include Knights and Princesses, Witches and Wizards, Superheroes and Space Rangers.

And you can try the calming influence of yoga or the raucous pirate role-play activities.

Age 12 – 16

Every Tuesday throughout August teenagers have the opportunity to try their hand at a range of activities including jewellery design and production, photography, film making or acting.

Or, how about a week of high energy dance workshops with Bboy’s Attic Summer School? Would your teenager like to unleash their inner Bboy or Bgirl with acclaimed teacher and choreographer Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere? If they already have some dance experience and want to learn about the culture of Breakin / Bboyin then this course is a must.

Or if music is more their thing then they can learn to MC with Feva. Develop freestyle and lyric writing and have the chance to meet and network with other aspiring rappers. And there is a hip hop DJ workshop for them to try out their beatmatching and backspinning skills using a mixture of US and UK tracks.

For the budding artists there is a Bboy Hip Hop inspired screen printing and inkwell print workshop led by Inkwell’s Dave Springer, a professional screen printer with a passion for hip hop.

For the full programme of activities contact mac on 0121 446 3232 or go to www.macarts.co.uk

My Kings Heath hits the world wide webOwned by Swan Publishing this delightful local community magazine has now found its way onto the internet.

So if you remember an article or advert from a previous issue and can’t lay your hands on it then just go to www.swanpublishing.org where you will find back copies dating back to its launch in May last year.

And if you run a business or work for an organisation that sees Kings Heath as a target audience then you can find out all you need to know about the incredibly low cost advertising packages available. You can also look at distribution maps which show exactly where the magazine is delivered each month.

My Kings Heath is now taking a new direction with a greater emphasis on community news, so if you belong to an

organisation and want to get your voice heard or have a story you feel would be of interest to the local community then please do get in touch. And if there is anything you would like to see in the magazine that is not already there then please let us know, we are always on the look out for new ways to improve the magazine.

Having run the Moseley Directory since its launch in February 2006, editor Amy Watson, a Moseley local, launched My Kings Heath in March 2009 and Edgbaston Directory in February 2010. These three magazines complement each other perfectly and provide a valuable means for businesses to promote themselves to their local area.

Build your own Greenhouse out of old windowsKaren Leach, a local Moseleyite has taken the concept ‘on a shoestring budget’ to its fullest extreme with her construction of a greenhouse out of ‘found’ objects. She explains all.

“Maybe it’s a Constant Gardener-esque attempt not to think too much about anything, or maybe it’s middle age – but I’ve been becoming increasingly obsessed with our garden of late, and so found myself hankering after a greenhouse in which to nurture tender seedlings and grow tomatoes out of the blight-carrying wind,” says Karen. “But the idea of buying one of those budget plastic ones that lasts a season was depressing, and so were the prices of proper wooden ones. My tomatoes seemed destined to remain hunched in a coldframe.”

“Inspiration struck when I cycled past a skip full of lovely old wooden windows in Moseley, and we now have a beautiful greenhouse built entirely out of windows that would otherwise have ended-up up the chimney of Tyseley incinerator. It took a few months to collect enough windows (we did ask!), including some with coloured glass and one huge, arched beauty from Chantry Rd which forms the roof.

“There’s a minimal foundation of a layer of bricks (a quarry tiled floor is the next project), and then the windows are attached to each other simply with long screws from one frame into the next – the roof attaches in the same way, strengthened with a broad supporting post.”

Karen stressed that even for a DIY novice like her it was relatively easy. The hardest part was making all the odd sized windows fit into a neat rectangular structure, but she found a puzzle-solving satisfaction about that too. Oh, and there was a certain amount of channel-cutting to ensure that rain can drain off the roof properly – but she advises that if you choose your roof windows more for practicality and less for aesthetics, that might be less of a problem.

Karen made shelving out of discarded pallets and has now had the satisfaction of seeing her first generation of seedlings grow up in the added warmth, as well as an excellent crop of tomato plants.

So if you are hankering after a greenhouse but can’t see when you’ll have the funds to afford it then this is definitely a very rewarding way of getting a beautiful and functional greenhouse almost for free.

Moseley Folk FestivalWhat a fabulous way to end the summer holidays – a festival in Moseley’s private park with a serious line up of live music. So if it’s not there already put this down on your calendar or in your diary for the weekend of 2, 3, 4 September.

This year will be the 6th Moseley Folk Festival in Moseley Park which continues to get better and better. The program includes a healthy mix of traditional, contemporary and downright experimental folk and acoustic music.

Showcasing unsigned acts right next to well established international artists makes for a really exciting bill. This is a very family friendly event with activities for all ages. And the festival is not confined to the leafy boundaries of the park. There will be sessions, dancing and an array of talented musicians in a choice selection of Moseley Village’s finest pubs.Badly Drawn Boy is the headline act on Friday. With a vast back catalogue

to choose from, his set will surely be a memorable start to the festival.

Saturday night headliners are Tinariwen, a group of former Touareg warriors from the southern Sahara. They fought in the early 1990s to win greater freedom for their people and their fight gave birth to a whole new style of desert music. Their roots rock rebellion of the soul is one of the most entrancing sounds to emerge from Africa in years.

Billy Bragg will bring the festival to a lively close on Sunday night. Over the past 30 years he has recorded hit singles, composed Top Ten albums and written political anthems whilst blending elements of folk and punk rock and singing honest songs from the heart.

The benefits of frequent advertisingThe economic slow-down, large scale redundancies and the knock on effect of belt tight-ening across the board is putting the squeeze on many small – and large – businesses.

And this is why now more than ever businesses need to make sure they are in the best position to survive the storm by keeping and growing their customer base.

And the best way to do this is to keep telling people about yourself. Keep telling them about your services and products. Because when they are ready to spend their money you want to be the first people they think of.

Low cost local advertising is worth its weight in gold. And that is why at Swan Publishing we have frozen our rates for the last two years and introduced the new eighth of a page size to make advertising accessible to everyone.

But just putting an advert in the media is not enough. It needs to be as regular as clockwork to really work for you. And here’s why:

1. Very few people have a need for any specific product or service on any given day. So frequent advertising reaches this ‘thin market’ when they are ready to buy, not just when you are ready to sell.

2. Frequent advertising reaches your customers regardless of reading habits. Frequency builds awareness. Awareness builds familiarity and familiarity builds trust. Just like dieting, advertising gets the best results over time. Each ad builds on prior brand recognition.

3. Frequency offers you the best rates. You can get significant discounts for booking your advertising over a longer period of time.

4. Today’s ad may influence – but tomorrows will close the deal. Like pushing a ball up a hill, it is better to push slowly than to push quickly and run out of energy half way up.

5. Frequent advertising helps you beat your competition. If you are not advertising as much as your competition does, who is more likely to reach the consumer who is ready to spend?

6. Advertising is one of your smallest business expenses. Yet not using it often enough can kill your business. If you give up on an advertising campaign before it has had the chance to work, all that investment is wasted.

7. People forget! What are the statistics about how fast people forget? It used to be that something like 80 percent forgot a message in 24 hours. But, I forget.

If you are interested in how low cost frequent advertising is in this magazine just have a look at our website which shows all advertising rates and discounts. www.swanpublishing.org or call Amy Watson on 0121 689 0432.

You are a carer if you, without being paid for the care you provide, look after a partner, friend, relative or neighbour who can’t manage without your help. This may be due to age, physical or mental illness, addiction or disability.

Looking for that elusive job? Then attending a Work Club at Kings Heath Library will help you.

Work Clubs are a free service to help unemployed people get back into work, and support those looking for their first job.

They are taking place at Kings Heath Library from 10.30-12.30 on Friday 12 August, 9 September, 14 October, 11 November and 16 December.

The two-hour sessions, often run in partnership with other agencies, provide self help resources that include CV writing, interview techniques, volunteering opportunities and online application forms, as well as providing computer access in order to search for vacancies and improve your basic IT skills.

They also give job hunters the chance to meet others looking for work, build new contacts and share experiences.

Library staff can help signpost customers to other services that cannot be supplied on site, including skills and job search courses.

You are always welcome to use free library resources to improve your work opportunities on a daily drop in basis.

Looking for free fun for your pre-schooler?Bring your little one along for story telling and art activities. The Under 5s storytime is every Monday from 2pm to 2.45pm. Staff read a few stories then it’s over to your under 5’s for some hands on craft. This is a free activity and there is no need to book.

Struggling with homework?Kings Heath Library runs a regular homework support club during term time every Monday from 3.45 to 4.45. This is aimed at secondary school children and is a free drop-in service.

Kings Heath Library is open 9am-5pm Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 12-7pm on Thursday (and closed on Wednesday and Sunday). Parking is free on the high street for up to an hour in between 8am and 1pm and unrestricted parking is allowed on the side roads.

The library is still a free service so go on, take advantage of it.

Supporting our local hospitalHarborne based Tyndallwoods Solicitors is helping to promote a campaign to raise money for the QE.

Solicitor Judy Dyke explained: “What a pleasure it was to visit the fabulous Accident & Emergency Department at our new Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Parking was easy, the entrance and reception desk welcoming and the care given was 5 star.

“I saw the need for the QE ‘Plus’ Appeal. The aim of the appeal is to raise money to pay for items ‘over and above’ those provided by the NHS including the children’s play area in A&E.

“The delightful Triage Nurse Claire reminded me of the work carried out by the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in the hospital supported by the charity Troop Aid,” she said.

The objective of Troop Aid is to supply ‘basic essentials’ in a Grab Bag when service casualties return from serving their country overseas without their personal effects or clothing.

Items in the Grab Bag include T-shirt and shorts, washing and shaving kit, towel, face flannel, tooth paste, tooth brush, shower mules, socks, underwear, pen and paper.

If you want to find out more about the work of these charities please visit their websites at www.qehb.org/qeplus or www.troopaid.info

How to Play

Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition!

That’s all there is to it.

You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up.

It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive!
