Take all the preconceptions that you have about builders.

Now take a sledgehammer to them.

Nick Jones – the man behind 2nd Generation Building Services – is the new face of building.

From a family steeped deep in the foundations of construction, he has grown up in the trade.

He went to university to earn his Masters in Construction Project Management, educating himself in the new cutting edge techniques and design software that have emerged in the industry.

While the trend for most is to use these techniques exclusively in large scale construction, 2nd Generation Building Services, is proudly doing things differently.

Nick is applying this knowledge to help the domestic market.

Now you can have a builder that uses precise leading industry tools to provide you with an unparalleled service in the domestic building world.

Whatever building project you need – from a loft conversion, to simple renovation –

you will receive a full and transparent quote for what it will take to complete the job to WKHEHVWÀQLVKZLWKQRKLGGHQFRVWV

A professional, comprehensive management approach, coupled with a keen eye for design, rarely seen in the trade.

Nick even chooses the local suppliers and contractors that share his philosophy on professionalism and transparency.

Leaving you – the customer – to enjoy the piece of mind you need before embarking on your project.

After all, when it comes to trusting someone with your money, don’t you want the best job possible?

Volunteer It Yourself An ambitious new national programme aimed at giving young people

aged 14 upwards the chance to gain accredited construction skills while

refurbishing their local youth clubs is being rolled out across the city,

and was launched at All Saints Centre in King’s Heath in March.

VIY is backed by a dynamic partnership of both public and private organisations and aims to make real and lasting improvements to communities and the lives of young people.

The Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) scheme is run by young people’s charity London Youth, working with The Co-Sponsorship Agency, an organisation that specialises in pulling together cross-sector partnerships, and is backed by a £940,000 Big Lottery Fund grant.

It will see young people renovating 47 youth clubs across England and Wales, receiving mentoring from local Wickes trade customers and gaining TXDOLÀFDWLRQVIURP&LW\*XLOGV

The council have made access to the common much easier from the Haunch Lane entrance with the installation of a new path and a new bridge over the Haunch Brook.

To LetBeing a landlord or a tenant

are both fraught with potential

pitfalls and sometimes the only

thing to do is to turn to the

experts.

In this issue’s ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ feature we meet Julie Russell, Solicitor Partner who specialises in property litigation, dealing with all types of disputes that relate to land ownership or occupation.

Julie acts for a variety of clients, including commercial landlords and tenants; residential landlords and long leaseholders, and some social landlords. She therefore sees both sides of the story and says that this helps with the advice she can give. She stresses that as often as possible disputes are resolved using mediation or arbitration, rather than court proceedings. This helps to reduce the cost and stress, as well as speeding up the process. It is also particularly useful where the parties are in a continuing relationship, such as that of landlord and tenant.

As Julie sees it, the main issues faced by commercial tenants in today’s High Street include rental affordability and costly repair and maintenance of buildings. In some cases she has helped her clients to secure rental reductions and rent free periods as part of a lease renewal procedure. On the other hand, the concerns commercial landlords face in the current economy include rent not being paid and tenants going into administration. In both these situations speed and understanding your options is of the essence. The faster a landlord acts the less money that will be lost.

With regard to residential landlords, the law often seems on the side of the tenant, so landlords need to follow it to the letter and if they make even a tiny error it can set the case back by months; during which time they are unlikely to be receiving rental income. Seeking professional help at the very beginning often pays dividends in the long run.

Julie will always look at her clients’ problems on DQLQGLYLGXDOEDVLVDQGKHOSWKHPWRÀQGWKHPRVWpractical and economical way of sorting them out.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Julie on 0121 693 2222

Specsavers puts pupils in the frame

Specsavers in Kings Heath is encouraging parents to ensure that they get

their children’s eyesight tested.

The store, which prides itself in providing expert and value for money eye care, is run by director Peter Squire. He says: ‘Regular eye examinations are vital, as undetected problems with vision DIIHFWRQHLQÀYHVFKRROFKLOGUHQë7KLVFDQGDPDJHWKHLUFRQÀGHQFHDQGperformance in reading and sports that require hand-eye co-ordination.

Most infants and pre-school children have regular vision screening as part of their routine developmental checks. These early tests are invaluable, but are not as thorough as a full eye

H[DPLQDWLRQE\DTXDOLÀHGRSWRPHWULVWAt Specsavers the test is designed to be friendly and fun for kids of all ages.

Eye examinations for children are paid for by the NHS up to the age of 16, or 19 if they are in full-time education. If children need glasses, the NHS contributes towards the cost. At Specsavers in Kings Heath, this voucher entitles children to free glasses from a wide range of fashionable frames. The full range of children’s spectacles can be seen online at www.specsavers.co.uk

Free NHS eye examinations are also available for people over 40 years of age with a history of glaucoma in the family and individuals over the age of 60. For more information pop into the store at 132 High Street, Kings Heath, Birmingham or call 0121 4411322.

Supporting Acorn Children's Hospice

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides holistic, specialised care to children

and young people with life limiting and life threatening conditions (which

means they are not likely to reach adulthood). The charity also supports

the family at every stage of their child’s life and beyond into bereavement.

In 2012, TLC Lottery raised over £130,000 for Acorns, enough to fund a physiotherapist at each of its three West Midlands hospices, one of which is located in Selly Oak in Birmingham, for one year.

Physiotherapists provide vital care for children with a range of life limiting conditions. They use different techniques to assist with pain management and movement, and help with muscle, joint, bone, soft tissue or respiratory problems.

Physiotherapists also give the children therapy sessions in the hydrotherapy pool. Hydrotherapy is a relaxing and therapeutic experience for a child, and can improve both their mental and physical wellbeing. The warm water helps ease stiff muscles and joints, actively reduces pain and offers an otherwise impossible sense of freedom and movement.

Bees, bees, glorious bees. Love them or hate them, we can’t live without them. They’re vital to

the environment and our food.

Community Garden, Martineau Gardens in Edgbaston actively encourage bees to the Gardens to help with the pollination RI IUXLWYHJHWDEOHVDQGÁRZHULQJSODQWV

The Gardens have a cluster of traditional bee hives in the woodland area which you can observe. You may even meet the Gardens’ bee keeper John Gale tending the bees.

Pictured here, John inspects the bees after a month of harsh weather. The smoker device he is using encourages the bees to JRUJHRQKRQH\DÁLJKWUHVSRQVHWRVPRNHwhich makes them drowsy and easier for the bee keeper to lift out the combs.

By September, John will be extracting honey from the combs and preparing it for display the Birmingham & District Beekeepers Association annual Honey Show hosted here (14 & 15 September).
