Winter gardening tipsIf you love your garden and want to get the most out of it then there are a few things to think about over the winter.

“There are several ways to improve the quality of your garden over the long winter months ahead” says Julia Watkins, of Lupin Garden Design. “The most obvious is to have a general tidy-up – clear away all the leaves from beds and borders, give your grass a final cut, and attend to your lawn and path edges, making them crisp and neat. If you can, add evergreen

interest – not just green leaved, but yellow, silver, red, lime and grey. Topiary box – conical, ball and bee-hive shapes - provides structure and architectural form as well. Planting bulbs and early flowering perennials, such as primroses and lungwort, shortens this quiet season, and offers a rich source of nectar for emerging insects.”And Julia should know. For ten years, she and her business partner, Susan Brown,

have run Lupin Garden Design – planning, designing, landscaping and maintaining over 150 Birmingham gardens. This horticulturally trained pair have overseen the development and maintenance of many outdoor spaces – from the smallest urban courtyard, to large established private grounds.

Busier than ever, Susan feels the key to their success is two-fold. “Firstly, we offer a wide range of services – anything from a one-off tidy up or regular maintenance, to large design and planting work. We can come in and tidy or plant the smallest border, or we can redesign a whole garden.

The second reason for Lupin’s continued growth appears to be their business model. “We didn’t intend this to happen” says Susan, “but as we expanded, we took on more women. It seems that we filled a gap – not just for our workers, who we train to the highest standard, but for our clients as well. People trust us to let ourselves in, to keep hold of keys, to be responsible, hard-working and professional on site, and to leave the gardens looking immaculate.”

New heart for Kings HeathKings Heath has a new heart after a £660,000 project to create a village square.

Accompanied by musicians, drummers and choirs, the new square in Kings Heath was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Coun Anita Ward, and the Bishop of Birmingham, the Rt Rev David Urquhart, on Saturday October 15.

The Village Square brings together three separate areas of ground into one beautiful oasis, a place for meeting and relaxing and where a regular programme of events and activities will take place.

A cafe will open soon in the adjacent Welcome space. So come and join in -

5th November - Farmers Market

19th November - Christmas lights switch on.

Major features in the square include:

• A ‘bubble pavement’ water feature which symbolises refreshment, new life and Christian Baptism

• A paved labyrinth, designed by Simon Watkins of RGA, the artwork inserts for which were designed by artist Alison Ogle in consultation with local young people and community groups and which includes mosaic inserts and quotations on the theme of ‘Cherish your Life and Community’

• A paved Threshold/Swirl feature, which will spiral outward from a restored Edwardian lamppost at the outer corner of the square toward the centre of the labyrinth and in which is cut a poem by local poet Rosie Miles who was a finalist for this year’s Birmingham Poet laureate.

• A re-sited and renovated War memorial with seating

• 28 new trees and a new Landscaping and planting plan: members of the community have taken part in planting some of the shrubs, trees and bulbs.

During the opening ceremony, which was attended by MPs, Councillors and representatives from other local associations, the Bishop switched on the water feature and blessed the venue. Music and song were performed by the Kings Heath Brass Quintet; the Eritrean church and the Sing Live! choir.

Landscape architect and labyrinth designer Simon Watkins of RGA, and site construction supervisor Peter Smith of Trendgrey completed the labyrinth by the ceremonial laying of the final piece, a centre steel inlay circle.

The project has been masterminded by the All Saints Community Development Company, in collaboration with All Saints Parochial Church Council. The group secured a £430,000 grant for the square from the Big Lottery’s Community Spaces Fund, managed by Groundwork UK, £210,000 from Birmingham City Council and £20,000 from Kings Heath Centre Partnership

Vivien Thickett of the All Saints Community Development Company said: “It’s been hard work putting together such a complicated project but the results make it all worth while. We now have a beautiful square for all members of the community to enjoy.”

Highbury Children’s Centre is moving on up!!Highbury Children’s Centre has spent the summer moving up from Windsor House at the bottom of the High Street to the heart of Kings Heath in the new All Saints Centre.

Since its launch in February 2009 it has become the place in Moseley and Kings Heath for families with young children to find out what’s on locally, or to get help with all those things that can make the difference between enjoying being a parent or struggling through. Ofsted recognised the good work that has been going on when, earlier in the year, it gave Highbury Children’s Centre a resounding ‘Good’ for every area of its work.

The Centre brings together a range of services for children under five and their families. Whether it’s finding a local stay-and-play group, nursery or child-minder, trying out a new activity, or getting help finding a job, Highbury Children’s Centre has helped hundreds of families. Others have got the support they needed when they were feeling low or needing help with their finances.Services include:

• advice during pregnancy and when your baby is born

• home visiting

• baby massage and baby sensory courses

• parenting support

• information about your child’s health needs

• training courses to improve your life skills or help you back to work

• help finding specialist groups and services.

Highbury Children’s Centre works closely with other partners, such as Poplar Road Health Centre, Kings Heath Library, Flying Start, and Queensbridge School. If there is something they can’t help you with, they’ll do their very best to make sure they help you find someone who can.

Highbury Children’s Centre manager, Dilys Garrod, said: ‘Moving to All Saints Centre means that it will be easier for people to find us, and we’re also delighted to be in the same building as key partners such as All Saints Youth Project and Parks 4 Play.’

So if you live in the Moseley and Kings Heath area and have a child under 5, drop in and see the Highbury Children’s Centre team at All Saints or give them a call to register with them. You’ll receive a free bag full of goodies as a thank you!

LIFE GOES ONA new and exciting exhibition of specially commissioned Art works and paintings in cel-ebration of the life of Ann Teutscher (1957 – 2011) will be showing at the Kitchen Garden café in King’s Heath from October through to December 2011.

Please tell your family and friends and come along to see the Life Goes On exhibition and enjoy the good food and the convivial atmosphere of the Kitchen Garden café.

Ann Teutscher was a friend of the artists concerned and they have collaborated together to put on this special exhibition.

A personal note from the artists:

“We first met ‘Anni’ at Birmingham City University on the Foundation Art course in September 2007 and became close friends. Anni was a highly creative and skilled artist particularly in textiles, sewing and knitting. She had recently begun a course concerning the design and manufacture of shoes in Leicester when illness overcame her.

She leaves a widower Ade, a daughter Holly, a grand-daughter Steph, a sister Jane and parents Kathleen and Barrie.

Anni touched our lives in many different ways - through friendship, humour and critical

analysis. She provided encouragement in our Art works and during the Foundation Art course we attended together. Anni gave a great deal of support to us all both within and outside our studies. She is sadly missed. We hope that by putting on this exhibition we can remember the good times we shared with Anni and acknowledge the friendship we shared and the support she provided.

Art works are on display mainly in the back room at the Kitchen Garden Café and some are in the main part of the café. They are priced at rock bottom rates as they need to be sold during the exhibition, as there is nowhere to store them.

En garde…Is the cry as you draw your sword and stand alongside Captain Jack Sparrow to defend the Black Pearl. But seriously, fencing needn’t remain the stuff of fantasy and make believe.

Birmingham Fencing Club has a long standing tradition of drawing swords to compete in national competitions as well as providing an exhilarating way to keep fit and a superb way to channel the energies of children in a constructive way. As well as being a truly enjoyable sport, fencing enhances co-ordination, concentration, balance and agility.

Since it was established over a century ago Birmingham Fencing Club has really moved with the times and rather than training people for active service the focus now is much more on fitness and enjoyment.

There is a class for any boy, girl, man or woman over the age of eight. Classes are held at the University of Birmingham in the Old Gym and in the sports hall at Hallfield School in Edgbaston.

Being a Clubmarked community fencing club means they adhere to the strict standards set out by British Fencing, the National Governing Body. It also means that everything they teach is to

national standard and all the equipment used meets strict criteria. Youngsters have a structured programme of activity which is both fun and appropriate to their age and ability level. Mike Whitehouse is the director of coaching and a national level tutor. He has trained the coaches and helpers currently active at the senior and junior level classes. All fencers are encouraged to try competitions at a level suited to their ability and they are fully supported at these events.

Whilst separated by gender in competitions a number of ‘fun’ mixed team events take place. Birmingham Fencing Club is very active in the region’s competitions and at County level with winners often from this club. They are immensely proud of their success in real terms of medals but most of all for their personal achievement.

To find out more you can contact the club on

Classical music for the next generationWho says classical music is not for the young? Tyndallwoods partner Judy Dyke has been getting involved in a project which aims to inspire Birmingham school children to sing and engage in contemporary classical music.

Judy joined Karen Daw of Town Hall Symphony Hall for the exciting “Sing for All: Creative Foundations Concert” brought together by the THSH Education & Community Department.

The project opened up the challenging world of contemporary classical music for schools and aimed to extend singing opportunities for young people of all ages and abilities. Over the past six months, teachers and music leaders attended workshops in Symphony Hall, discovering how to inspire confidence

when singing, and engage the next generation in contemporary classical music.

School children and professionals shared one stage under the baton of John Gibbons and sang in the presence of Karl Jenkins, the composer of Stabat Mater (from a 13th-century poem ‘The Sorrowful Mother was standing’). The piece incorporates both traditional Western music (orchestra and choir) with ethnic instruments and vocals. It was an unforgettable concert experience.

Home made home grownA new deli for Kings Heath is born. The Kitchen Garden Café has just launched a new deli range which features home grown produce from gardens in Kings Heath and Moseley as well as some home-made specialities baked with garden-grown ingredients.

Alongside black grapes and quinces you will also see many unusual apple varieties that you would never find in the supermarket – all grown in local gardens. And the cooked food features delicious apple cakes and quiches made from close to home ingredients too.

With its ethos of buying local produce where possible combined with talented chefs the Kitchen Garden has launched its deli counter to complement their already multi-faceted business.

“As a local independent business we try to buy local where possible and support other small businesses” said Kitchen Garden Café owner Tracy Fletcher.

“There is loads of fantastic food produced here in the Midlands and it is particularly exciting to offer our new range of local fruit harvested from gardens in Moseley and Kings Heath. If you have a surplus of fruit in your own garden then we’d love to hear from you.”

Food for LoveSit back and relax, having satisfied your appetite with a delicious dinner, to enjoy a series of theatrical vignettes performed in between your gastronomic delights.

Specifically adapted to be performed in the unique location of Highbury Hall, Kings Heath, Food for Love is made up of excerpts from three classics rarely seen today:

The Country Wife is a Restoration comedy written in 1675 by William Wycherley. A product of the tolerant early Restoration period, the play reflects an aristocratic and anti-Puritan ideology, and was controversial for its sexual explicitness even in its own time.

Love for Love, a Georgian masterpiece of satire, illustrating the ridiculous extremes society will go to be fashionable.

The Noble Spaniard is a brilliant concoction of being misunderstood, double-entrentre and vanity, all brilliantly stitched together by a master of Edwardian play writing, W Somerset-Maugham.

Bracegirdle & Co is a select group of performers breathing life into plays rarely seen today. Taking scenes from existing period works the players have created a series of self-contained vignettes, exquisitely costumed.

Bike recycling project moves up a gearBirmingham Bike Foundry has broken into the high street after a year operating out of a lock up in a music studio.

Birmingham Bike Foundry opened up shop at 1539 Pershore Road - Stirchley High Street. For just over a year Birmingham Bike Foundry have been working, with notable successes, towards building a stronger and more dynamic cycling community within the city. The Bike Foundry have built upon the normal services offered by a bike shop to offer a unique range of resources to Birmingham cyclists.

One of the principal activities of the business is bike recycling. Members of the public donate old and unwanted bikes to the Bike Foundry, whose mechanics expertly repair them, giving local people access to bikes that are both fairly priced and good quality. Their mechanical skills are also put to good use by those requiring bespoke builds, ranging from renovations of vintage bikes, to fixies and bike polo rides.

Birmingham Bike Foundry also offer training courses which empower people to become independent in their life as a cyclist. Maintenance training ranges from basic repairs and safety check s to highly technical jobs such as wheel building; the trainees’ ability to pick and choose modules means that everyone can develop exactly the skills they want. Sessions covering cycle skills are also available, enabling some of the Bike Foundry’s customers to reach aims such as navigating complex roads to find a safe commuter route, and some to simply ride a bike for the first time!

Over the past year the Bike Foundry’s experience and skills has also led to them working with large organizations in addition to individuals. For example, they are now working at several

Birmingham schools offering bike polo clubs, giving youngsters a great introduction to this fun new team sport.

The move to Stirchley represents the product of a years’ work from a very unique organization. With its co-operative structure Birmingham Bike Foundry enables its workers to have control over the direction of the business, enabling it to expand into the exciting areas of work it has taken on. This project will surely soon play an invaluable role in the local community, and the wider populace of Birmingham cyclists.
