What is the Kings Heath BID?The Kings Heath Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined geographical area within Kings Heath centre where businesses have voted to invest collectively in local improvements to enhance their trading environment.

Following a successful postal ballot of eligible business ratepayers in 2007, a second ballot has just been held in 2012 with a 64.4% majority vote in favour, this then secured the necessary mandate for a second term of the BID, which officially begins on 1 April 2013 for a further 5 years.

There’s no doubt about it, Kings Heath just wouldn’t be the same place without Kings Heath BID. To begin with we wouldn’t have a new village square, but that’s not all, the BID is the driving force behind the floral displays around Kings Heath, the Christmas lights, graffiti reduction, street cleaning, and much more.

Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthCarrots and Feta (serves 4)

Ingredients:

• About 750g of carrots• Olive oil • 1 tablespoon of toasted cumin seeds • 100g feta • 2 tablespoons of chopped mint • Good olive oil to drizzle

Method

Scrub carrots and cut into halves or quarters depending on the size of the carrots. Toss in some olive oil and toast in the oven at 180oc for about 45mins (they need to be slightly browned).

When cool enough to handle, squash them in to small pieces with your hands (pick them up and squeeze!)

Now mix in the cumin seeds which you have toasted in a dry pan until they are just starting to colour. Then ground the seeds in a mortar and pestle.

Now spread them loosely on a plate/serving dish and scatter over the feta and mint, drizzle over the olive oil and you’re done!

Exciting changes at St Dunstan's SchoolA new and exciting £2m building project at St Dunstan’s School has been underway since February this year. The first phase will be completed for the children’s return in September.

At the end of the project some of the new facilities at St Dunstan’s will be five new classrooms, new withdrawal areas where staff can work in small groups with gifted and talented children or those who need extra support in small groups, three new Foundation classrooms with a dedicated outdoor play area and a Research Library for children to work in.

The whole school will become wireless, there will be new toilets, staffroom, admin offices and a new school entrance. This is a very exciting time for St Dunstan’s!

In October and November prospective Nursery and Reception parents can come along and see for yourselves the difference these changes have made to this well respected local primary school. There are going to be three open days so hopefully you’ll be able to make it to one of them.

Two of them are in the morning at 9.30 on Wednesday 17 October and Thursday 8 November and the third is in the evening from 7pm on Wednesday 14 November.

Are you after a brighter whiter smile?Local dental surgeon Dr Ahmed Farooq from All Saints Dental in Kings Heath takes us through the finer points of tooth whitening.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is a process used to chemically alter the colour of teeth. This is achieved by removing stains and discolouration by adding a whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) to the tooth surface. This results in the tooth looking whiter and gives an overall more youthful appearance.

How does whitening work?

Tooth colour may be lightened using hydrogen peroxide (bleach). This may be done via external whitening or internal whitening.

There are two methods of external tooth whitening.

Home whitening kits:

The dentist will prescribe a safe dose of whitening jelly to be used within close fitting gum shield trays. This is a lower dose than the

one you would be given if you opted for chair side whitening. The trays will prevent contact with gums in order to prevent burns. You will have to wear the trays for about one hour each night, until you achieve the desired effect. This will allow the agent the time it needs to take action. These home whitening kits help you maintain a longer lasting result compared to the initial treatment alone. You can also top the colour up every month if required.

Chair side / laser whitening:

With this method of tooth whitening, the dentist will use a much stronger whitening jelly then the one used at home. The dentist can whiten both the upper and lower dental arch at the same time. The process is much shorter then home whitening, leaving you with a brighter colour and healthier looking result. The gum margin is protected by the dentist by painting on a protective layer, which is activated by a blue light. Once the process is finished


the gel can be washed off. To maintain the colour, a home kit will need to be used. A combination of both products will result in immediate and long-term colour stability.

For those who have heavy staining and calculus, a pre-treatment scale and polish from the dental hygienist may be necessary to aid the whitening process.

Internal Whitening:

This is a more specialised method, reserved mainly for patients who have discolouration due to nerve root damage. Peroxide is placed within the tooth through a small syringe and a temporary dressing is applied over the tooth. This method usually takes longer than external whitening, with results being achieved within a few days. In some cases it may even take several weeks. The result is assessed by the dentist at regular intervals, and the process will be repeated if necessary.

What are the benefits of tooth whitening?

Whitening is now relatively cheap and easily accessible from your dentist. The main benefit is a healthier looking smile without removing any of the tooth structure. Whitening is a much more conservative approach to changing a smile compared to crowns and veneers, as these methods result in changing the shape of the tooth.

Local lottery supports local charitiesLast year TLC Lottery donated £126,000 to Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice - enough to fund around 4,500 hours of care.

That covers nursing care, physiotherapy, meals, dressings and medication which are delivered round-the-clock, 365 days a year, to people from across Birmingham and Sandwell.

Each year the charity supports around 1,000 patients and at any one time is providing care to 300 people. The Hospice delivers its services through a network of palliative care doctors, clinical nurse specialists and physiotherapists, who support patients at home, at the charity’s inpatient unit and the Day Hospice in Selly Park.

TLC Lottery’s funding helps the Hospice to support relatives during

bereavement through the work of its Family and Carer Support Team. These Staff and volunteers offer guidance and advice to those coping with loss.

All Eyes on Kings Heath Floral Trail

In July a judging panel from the Heart of England in Bloom competition toured the streets and parks of Kings Heath as the area looks to repeat the 2011 gold-winning success of the Floral Trail.

The judges’ tour also took in the gardens: at Fox Hollies School; Highbury Park, where a woodland wildflower meadow and community orchard are being created; Kings Heath Park, which boasts an edible garden and enhanced children’s play area; and the Village Square, which contains a stunning new Floral Feature and where members of the local community have plans to create a traditional herb and rose garden.

The Floral Trail has been highly successful in recent years, earning a silver medal in 2008, silver gilt in 2009-10, and most recently a gold last year. As a result of being awarded a gold medal, Kings Heath was put forward to the national final of the prestigious Britain in Bloom competition, and was judged again by the national panel on 7 August.

The results of the regional Heart of England in Bloom competition are due to be announced on 13 September, when Kings Heath’s All Saints Church will host the Annual Awards Ceremony for the first time - to be attended by over 250 delegates.

Kings Heath’s Floral Trail is supported annually by the Business Improvement District (BID), and organised and maintained by the Clean and Green committee, BID board members and hundreds of local volunteers. The Floral Trail can be joined at any point in Kings Heath, and takes 10,000 steps to complete – the recommended healthy amount of walking per day.

The Tables are turningA national organisation is experiencing a rapid growth in members – and there’s a branch right on the doorstep waiting for you.

Moseley Round Table, which recently celebrated its 60th year in the community, is actively recruiting like-minded people to discover the benefits of being a ‘Round Tabler’ - a feeling enjoyed by thousands across the UK and even more overseas.

The past year has seen numbers grow, largely due to the packed social calendar, mixed with a little bit of giving something back to society.

Moseley Round Table members, men aged 25-40, come from across most of south Birmingham, with Kings Heath and Moseley being the focus for fortnightly meets, offering a wide mix of experiences and activities to make you the envy of all your mates.

Have you ever run with the Bulls in Pamplona? Ever given away £10,000 in one night to good causes? Felt like Jenson Button on a giant scalextric track? The ‘Moseley Tablers’ have.

But as well as having fun, their focus is very much on raising money for local charities and they provide regular support to the likes of St Mary’s Hospice, the Girl Guides, Autism West Midlands, local schools and groups representing the homeless and disabled.

As for activities, coming up this year the ‘Tablers’ are going to be testing their culinary skills, putting their taste buds to the test with whisky and wine tasting nights, and their driving prowess will be examined in a Top Gear challenge – with a difference! They will also be organising the areas biggest fireworks display.
