St Dunstan’s Open DaySt Dunstan’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery is a wonderful place for children aged 3 to 11.

St Dunstan’s is one of three parish schools in Kings Heath; St Dunstan’s, St Albans’s and Bishop Challoner Catholic College.

As St Dunstan’s School is on the same campus as Bishop Challoner Catholic College and St Dunstan’s Church children regularly take part in shared activities, masses and church celebrations.

St Dunstan’s School is a primary feeder school to Bishop Challoner Catholic College. Children benefit from a programme which provides specialist teaching in subject areas such as PE, Science and Maths.

Academic

All children thrive when they feel happy, safe and secure which is highly valued by all staff and Governors at St Dunstan’s School. Children have achieved brilliant results in the recent SATs examinations – 100% level 4 and above Maths 100% level 4 and above in Science96% level 4 and above in English.

Residential Visits

Children in Year 5 and Year 6 have the opportunity to take part in residential visits to education centres like Stansfeld and Bockleton Study Centre enabling them to experience many outdoor activities such as pond dipping, orienteering, visits to Christchurch in Oxford where Harry Potter was filmed, hill walking etc.

For the last two years a group of children have been taken skiing. Earlier this year a group Year 5 and Year 6 children went to France for a week skiing trip – next year it will be Switzerland!

PE and Sports

The school proudly holds the Activemark 2008 award for exceptional delivery of the National School Sport Strategy. Children also have regular opportunities to be taught by PE specialists and use the exceptional sports facilities of Bishop Challoner Catholic College.

Extra Curricular Clubs

St Dunstan’s has many different clubs and activities running throughout the year some including football, netball, cheerleading, multi skills, Gaelic football, dance and drama and radio club.

In June the school held a ‘ Clubs’ week where many community clubs came into school to carry out taster workshops with the children to introduce them to the many clubs and organisations within our community that they many be interested in joining. These included a street dance club, brownies, a karate club and Moseley Rugby Club as well as many others.

Music

Children are given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument – guitar, brass, accordion and woodwind. In the summer term the parents are invited to a recital to give the children the opportunity to celebrate their achievements. The school also has a flourishing school choir who join in with many celebrations.

End of Year Production

The end of year production this year was Cinderella Rockerfella

Before and After School Club

The Orchard Club @ St Dunstan’s is on site and cares for children from 4 years of age. The club is open during the summer holidays when the children enjoy a varied programme of activities and outings.

Parent Teacher Association

The school has a thriving PTA who organise many family events such as race nights, quiz nights and discos. The most recent event was the Summer Fun in July which included go-karts, a merry-go-round, bouncy castle, stalls and barbecue. This event raised over £1000.

The magic of autumnI love autumn. Walks in the countryside, crunching through leaves, crisp sunny days, and the perfect excuse for new clothes and boots.

And if like me you are on a budget then do the smart thing and use the cash in your wardrobe to refresh your wardrobe (and this goes for you blokes out there too).

Firstly, pull out those good quality designer and high street items you are really never going to wear again. Make sure they are clean and in perfect condition and take them along to Encore in Moseley village.Encore will review the items, price them and sell them in the shop. Then you get 50% of the sale price.

For you, it’s an opportunity to clear out the wardrobe and make some cash - at the same time as picking up something gorgeous for yourself.

Dolce & Gabbana, Karen Millen, Prada, Ghost, Ralph Lauren, Armani, Boss, Juicy Couture and Missoni are just some of the designer labels available, but you’ll also find high street labels. Prices start from as little as £10.00 for a Ralph Lauren jumper.

Half the thrill of shopping at Encore is finding beautiful clothes, but I really get my kicks out of finding a good bargain and can be found browsing the rails there at least twice a month to see what’s new.

Encore is on Alcester Rd close to the main crossroads in Moseley, next door to the Junction pub. There is ample parking in the car park just a little further along.

En garde…Is the cry as you draw your sword and stand alongside Captain Jack Sparrow to defend the Black Pearl. But seriously, fencing needn’t remain the stuff of fantasy and make believe.

Birmingham Fencing Club has a long standing tradition of drawing swords to compete in national competitions as well as providing an exhilarating way to keep fit and a superb way to channel the energies of children in a constructive way. As well as being a truly enjoyable sport, fencing enhances co-ordination, concentration, balance and agility.

Since it was established over a century ago Birmingham Fencing Club has really moved with the times and rather than training people for active service the focus now is much more on fitness and enjoyment.

There is a class for any boy, girl, man or woman over the age of eight. Classes are held at the University of Birmingham in the Old Gym and in the sports hall at Hallfield School in Edgbaston.

Being a Clubmarked community fencing club means they adhere to the strict standards set out by British Fencing, the National Governing Body. It also means that everything they teach is to

national standard and all the equipment used meets strict criteria. Youngsters have a structured programme of activity which is both fun and appropriate to their age and ability level. Mike Whitehouse is the director of coaching and a national level tutor. He has trained the coaches and helpers currently active at the senior and junior level classes. All fencers are encouraged to try competitions at a level suited to their ability and they are fully supported at these events.

Whilst separated by gender in competitions a number of ‘fun’ mixed team events take place. Birmingham Fencing Club is very active in the region’s competitions and at County level with winners often from this club. They are immensely proud of their success in real terms of medals but most of all for their personal achievement.

To find out more you can contact the club on

Do you remember the Women’s Movement Playgroup? It began in the early 1970s at Calthorpe Park playhut, then moved to Balsall Heath playhut on Ladypool Road and finally in 1975 to All Saints Church Hall on Vicarage Road in Kings Heath where it thrived until 2006.

All members over the past 30 years and their children and grown up children are invited to a re-union on Saturday 5 November at the new hall at All Saints Centre.

The Women’s Movement Playgroup was the only one in the country and over 30 years its members and their ‘children’ must have spread out far and wide. So help us spread the word. If you were a member and have kept in touch with any other members who have moved away please pass on this invitation.

The commemorative get together will take place from 2-4.30pm, there will be drinks provided, but if you can please bring some food to share. There will be speeches, lots of photos and more.

The Country Wife is a Restoration comedy written in 1675 by William Wycherley. A product of the tolerant early Restoration period, the play reflects an aristocratic and anti-Puritan ideology, and was controversial for its sexual explicitness even in its own time.

Love for Love, a Georgian masterpiece of satire, illustrating the ridiculous extremes society will go to be fashionable.

The Noble Spaniard is a brilliant concoction of being misunderstood, double-entrentre and vanity, all brilliantly stitched together by a master of Edwardian play writing, W Somerset-Maugham.

Bracegirdle & Co is a select group of performers breathing life into plays rarely seen today. Taking scenes from existing period works the players have created a series of self-contained vignettes, exquisitely costumed.

Highbury Children’s Centre is moving on up!!Highbury Children’s Centre has spent the summer moving up from Windsor House at the bottom of the High Street to the heart of Kings Heath in the new All Saints Centre.

Since its launch in February 2009 it has become the place in Moseley and Kings Heath for families with young children to find out what’s on locally, or to get help with all those things that can make the difference between enjoying being a parent or struggling through. Ofsted recognised the good work that has been going on when, earlier in the year, it gave Highbury Children’s Centre a resounding ‘Good’ for every area of its work.

The Centre brings together a range of services for children under five and their families. Whether it’s finding a local stay-and-play group, nursery or child-minder, trying out a new activity, or getting help finding a job, Highbury Children’s Centre has helped hundreds of families. Others have got the support they needed when they were feeling low or needing help with their finances.Services include:

• advice during pregnancy and when your baby is born

• home visiting

• baby massage and baby sensory courses

• parenting support

• information about your child’s health needs

• training courses to improve your life skills or help you back to work

• help finding specialist groups and services.

Highbury Children’s Centre works closely with other partners, such as Poplar Road Health Centre, Kings Heath Library, Flying Start, and Queensbridge School. If there is something they can’t help you with, they’ll do their very best to make sure they help you find someone who can.

Highbury Children’s Centre manager, Dilys Garrod, said: ‘Moving to All Saints Centre means that it will be easier for people to find us, and we’re also delighted to be in the same building as key partners such as All Saints Youth Project and Parks 4 Play.’

So if you live in the Moseley and Kings Heath area and have a child under 5, drop in and see the Highbury Children’s Centre team at All Saints or give them a call to register with them. You’ll receive a free bag full of goodies as a thank you!
