AUCTION RESULTSCONFIRMING EVERYTHING ISBIGGER IN TEXAS

Mecum Auctions completed their second annual Dallas Auction, held September 5-8, 2012, packing over 1,200 vehicles into The Dallas Convention Center and experienced competitive bidding from start to finish throughout the 4-day event. Total sales for the Dallas auction

reached nearly $32 million. The Cars of Hallbrook were presented on opening day Wednesday with three cars from the collection making the list of top ten sales for the entire Dallas Auction. The ensuing three days of the sale saw huge crowds and intense bidding on a total of over 1,200 vehicles, 808 of which were hammered sold for an impressive sell-through rate of nearly 70%. The top sale price of the auction was garnered by Lot S86, a well-documented Triple Black 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 HP Convertible selling for $285,000. Coming a close second was Lot

S136.1, a certified real-deal 1969 Yenko Camaro changing hands for $240,000. The results showed that the Mecum Dallas Auction had doubled in size in just its second year, confirming that everything IS bigger in Texas! M

The Cars of Hallbrook were presented on Wednesday, opening day of the Dallas 2012 auction with the entire sale broadcast live on Discovery’s Velocity Network. An incredible group of 96 vehicles offered exclusively with reserves, The Cars of Hallbrook brought a fantastic collection of exceptional American automobiles worthy of a stand-alone sale together with the multi-day consignment auction. “We essentially had an auction within an auction,” said President and CEO Dana Mecum. “By offering the collection on its own day within a consignment

auction on our regular schedule, the cars were able to benefit from all the additional promotion, higher bidder attendance and live national TV exposure associated with our regularly scheduled event, and the results speak for themselves.” Total sales for The Cars of Hallbrook Collection surpassed $5.2 million, with 82 vehicles going to new homes thanks to an incredible 85% sell-through rate. When I think of a Yellow John Deere tractor, I think of Gold. Of the 300,000 John Deere B tractors produced, only 183 were BI models, so finding an example to feature at our first tractor auction in Iowa was like finding the pot of gold. After doing some research to get the gold I was in search of, I have learned that there is much more to this industrial tractor than simply its attention getting Highway Yellow paint scheme. Coming out of the lean years of the Great depression, John Deere tractor sales had gone from more than 30,000 units per year down to only 765 tractors in 1933. Deere was looking to ramp up sales by building tractors to fit industrial needs, and in early 1935 after several meetings between John Deere and Caterpillar, the story of Highway

Gold begins. Caterpillar saw the need for a wheel tractor designed for specialized use, but didn’t want to build one, and after a deal was made, John Deere built industrial tractors to be sold by both JD and Cat dealers. Perhaps the real unknown significance of these industrial tractors had nothing to do with the tractors themselves. In the deal, Cat sold John Deere its

complete inventory of combines at production cost along with all the tooling and patents. This put JD on the path to become the market leader they are today. The John Deere BI went into production in 1936 and only 183 were built before the end of production in 1941. The BI has many unique features such as heavier rear axle housing, drum brakes, heavy duty draw bar, a front axle that was moved back to make the tractor more maneuverable, and came with what was called Highway Yellow paint. Offering a 1937 BI is a rare opportunity, and when the call came in we knew right away that this tractor was going to be the main attraction at the next auction held at the Davenport Fair Center on November 3, 2012. The key to The Pizza Man’s success is under the fiberglass hood in the form of a modified 292 CI GMC inline-6 engine fed by triple sidedraft Weber 2-barrel carburetors and driving a Positraction third member through

Few racing Corvettes have had as big an impact on their branch of motorsports as this 1954 roadster famously known as “The Pizza Man.” Serial number 99 in the 1954 production run of 3,640, it tore up the drag strips across the Midwest and at national events from 1962 to 1971 at the hands of owner/driver Earl Britt, proprietor of Earl’s Pizza Palace in Sioux Falls,

South Dakota. Along the way it earned the title of “World’s Fastest Six Cylinder Corvette”, setting a phenomenal nine World Records in NHRA Modified Production and, it is believed, winning more NHRA World Championship Points in three consecutive years (1967-1969) than any other car in Street Eliminator history or any other Division, including E/MP at


a custom-built B&M Turbo Hydra-Matic 3-speed transmission. The combination consistently launched The Pizza Man to low 13- and then mid 12-second elapsed times, eventually taking it to an official best of 12.17 at 118 mph and an unofficial 11.97 in 1970. Today The Pizza Man is in excellent as-raced condition, even wearing the rare Firestone Drag

500 front tires on which it last raced and the rubber marbles kicked up onto its quarter panels by its 7-inch Goodyear racing slicks. Still finished in its original Polo White paint, it is fitted with a trademark Black fiberglass hard top and the original Red interior, and wears skillfully weathered recreations of the decals, signage and Gold leaf “Pizza Man” graphics it wore

throughout its record-setting career as a 9-time NHRA record holder and 3-time NHRA World Champion. The Pizza Man is scheduled to cross the auction block on Saturday afternoon, during the Mecum 2012 Fall Premier Auction October 25-27 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois. M

RED COVER GIRLSFROM THE MIKE GUARISE COLLECTION


They’re the “Red Cover Girls”: all classic GM muscle cars finished in GM code 75 Red, all magazine cover features and each one a gorgeous example of its breed. We have come to expect nothing less from collector Mike Guarise of Chicago, whose extensive collection includes the rarest and most historically significant machines of that great era. The “Red Cover Girls” collection comprises three absolute treasures from the 1970 model year. Lot S151 is a Cranberry Red Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 4-speed Coupe, originally sold from Brigance Chevrolet, the popular Southside Chicago performance

dealer whose offerings dominated the local street scene there; Lot S152, a Matador Red Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Sports Coupe, is an original Las Vegas car recognized by Guarise as one of just 142 4-speed post coupes built; Lot S153 is a Cardinal Red Pontiac GTO packing a 455 CI V-8 4-speed drivetrain using SD internals. Together they represent the high-water mark of the muscle car era, and as one would expect from Mike Guarise, they are in beautiful as-original condition and equipped with “all the right options and none of the wrong ones.” Two of these treasures have graced the cover of popular Muscle Car Review magazine, with the third appearing on the cover of Collectible Automobile.

the efforts of a family member working in law enforcement and experienced in tracking investigation subjects. Harrison then approached the owner, who was initially unwilling to part with the car turning down several offers before his father intervened and negotiated the sale to Harrison, who then purchased the original parts and began restoring the car in the mid-1990s. As part of the rotisserie restoration the car received new floorboards and numerous GM NOS parts including quarter panels, bumpers, gas tank, miscellaneous sheet metal and other parts. Although the DZ-code 302 CI engine block appears to be decked, obscuring the pad stamping, the car’s VIN is stamped on the oil filter mounting boss and appears to be factory original, strongly suggesting it is

Documented by the original and subsequent owners and accompanied by the original paperwork and Protect-O-Plate, this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is one of only 206 built with the ultra-rare JL8 4-wheel disc brake option. Originally sold to Mr. Robert Boyette of Oakhurst, NJ by Park Chevrolet of Asbury Park, it was finished in Fathom Green with White Sport stripes and a Dark Green interior, and of course equipped with the Z28-specific 302/290 HP DZ small block and 4-speed manual transmission. Mr. Boyette recently described the

car as being unlike anything he had driven before it, calling the performance of the 4-wheel disc brakes “magic.” Documents confirm that Mr. Boyette sold the car after five years to a buyer in Pennsylvania. Later a subsequent owner removed the significant components and stored them with the original Protect-O-Plate. These were later discovered by noted Camaro enthusiast and restorer Tom Harrison, who agreed to purchase the Protect-O-Plate and return for the parts if and when he could locate the original car. He was later able to do just that through


indeed the original block, although this has not yet been confirmed. In refinishing the car Harrison eschewed the original Fathom Green for a custom shade closely approximating the factory Rallye Green, added Black Sport stripes and replaced the original Green interior with an RPO Z23 Special Black interior. Over a dozen years later the resulting presentation remains exceptionally pleasing to the eye. In 1998 the car was sold to Chicago industrialist Dale Kengott. A passionate and experienced collector, Kengott babied the car until selling it through the Volo Auto Museum to professional wrestler John Cena, who later sold it to a Naples, FL dealer. Appropriately labelled by its present owner simply as the “Reunion Camaro”, this

extraordinary 1969 JL8-equipped Camaro Z28 is documented with the Park Chevrolet bill of sale, Protect-O-Plate and warranty book, period photographs from the original owner and copies of the Pennsylvania title confirming

the car’s sale from the original owner to a Pennsylvania resident in October 1974. It is scheduled to cross the block as Lot# S81 at the Mecum Fall Premier Auction in St. Charles on Saturday October 27, 2012. M

Chrysler Corporation began development of passenger car V-8 engines with hemispherical shaped combustion chambers in the late-1940’s, using technology gained from experimental and production military engines from WW II. The hemi configuration has advantages with improved airflow, but it requires complex valvetrain geometry and a large, wide, and heavy cylinder head. Hemi engines were introduced with the top-line Chrysler Fire Power with 331-cubic inches in 1951. The horsepower race had begun! By the late ‘50’s, the Hemi had been replaced by conventional wedge-headed and polyspheric corporate engines that were lighter and cheaper. But the best was yet to come! In the early 1960’s, Ford and Chrysler were openly competing in various forms of auto racing. The major Mopar salvo was the debut of the race-only 426-ci 2nd-generation

Hemi that dominated NASCAR in 1964, and NHRA drag racing in 1965. The street version was readied for production to legalize it for the 1966 race season. This street Hemi also displaces 426 cubes, and when equipped with dual 4-barrel carbs, was conservatively rated at 425-horsepower. Around 11,000 Hemi’s were built from 1966 to 1971 in a variety of

Plymouth and Dodge models, including some 4-door sedans! Tougher EPA emission rules, insurance surcharges, and rising fuel prices, plus lowering octane ratings, all conspired to end this wild era of performance. The original 426 Hemi spirit lives today as the foundation for current drag racing engines generating in excess of 8,000-hp. But history repeats itself as a 3rd-generation of Hemi power was born in 2003 as a 5.7L V-8 in Dodge Ram trucks. In 2005, the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger/Magnum cars were available with a

340-horsepower version of this modern Hemi. Today, the high-tech Hemi has grown to 6.4L, rated at 470-hp in various SRT models, such as the Challenger. While the hemispherical combustion chamber is not exclusively used by Chrysler, the storied Hemi name is; in fact, it’s trademarked by the Corporation. Long live the Hemi! M

Curing Kids’ Cancer is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cutting edge pediatric cancer research through fundraising efforts including their Coaches Curing Kids’ Cancer and Teachers Curing Kids’ Cancer programs. Curing Kids’ Cancer is associated with some of the best-known companies in the world. These corporate citizens have provided not only much needed research dollars, but also long-term partnerships.

Mecum is committed to its support of this amazing cause, and will continue the donation wars prior to each auction day for the remainder of the 2012 schedule. If you were to look at two photographs of the same car, taken at the same time, from the same location, taken with matching cameras, you’d think that the resulting photos would be identical. But if one of those cameras is on a tripod, and the other camera is hand-held, the odds are good that the hand held camera is going to give you a photo that is shakier than a politicians promise. Mounting a camera on a rigid support can make the difference between a tack-sharp image and an unusable one. In vehicle photography, steady is your friend. The most common tool used to give a camera a shudder-free platform is a tripod. The camera is mounted onto the top of the device, the lens is pointed towards the subject, and the shutter button is pushed. Provided the camera was properly focused, and the exposure is correct, the result should be a razor-sharp photo. Tripods can range in price from $25 to well over $1,000, but they all have one job; minimizing camera shake. Eliminating vibration is especially critical when using a “long” lens, like a 70-200mm. When using a lens like this at 200mm, something as subtle as your heart beating can move the camera enough to affect sharpness. Check out the

If you must handhold the camera, keep your elbows close to your body, and hold your breath as you gently press the shutter button. That might be all you need for that singular special shot.
