Corvette from around the worldattended the Mecum Auction held in conjunction with theBloomington Gold Corvette Show.

There were around 350 desirable collector cars as well assome very fine daily drivers that went across the block June 27-28,2008 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, lllinois. Heldannually, this auction in particular attracts some of the mostsought-after Corvettes. Mecum Auction has consistently offered

was one of a set of three that did not sell. The set did bid to1.850.000.

This 1956 is SerialNumber E56S001001 and is the First Redesioned Corvette.; was the 1956 Motorama Coruette. The '56 model was an almost comoletelv newign sculpted in Chevrolet's design studio. Except for the grill, parking lights and out-I minor, this is the first re-design of America's first sports car 0 the 1953.

Interestingly, some of the panels are stil l hand-laid fiberglass rather than press-molded.Also, notice that the headlight rings are body color rather than chrome and the absence

fender scoops. Both are unique to this very first '56.While not confirmed, it's part of this car's lore that Zora Duntov mav have driven it

the Daytona Speed Trials and possible paced that year's Daytona 500. Althoughme clues exist, no documentation has Vet been found. The Serial #1 Corvettes were

Instead of giving an opinion on whether or not there is an eco-nomic slowdown in the car auction market l'lljust give you someinteresting facts. The results from this year's St. Charles, MecumAuction, 47% of the cars sold as opposed to last year 49% sold. That is only a 2% decline. The combined Corvette sales for lastyear were $8,255,306 where as this year it was up at $8,745,619.It would lead you to believe that collector car sales remain strongin spite of the economy.

The highest price sold Corvette was Lot #S107, a 1971Orange ZR-2 Convertible. This car was one of two (only 12 ZR2's

were built, of which only 2 wereconvertibles) and it commandeda price of $550,000.
