Dana Mecum has had an unabashed life-long love affair with the Pontiac brand. He grew up working in his father Ed Senior’s popular Pontiac dealership, graduating to new car sales during summer recess from high school. One of his first cars was a 1966 GTO convertible; “Cut me” says Mecum, “and I bleed Pontiac blood.”

That burning enthusiasm has grown into an encyclopedic knowledge of the marque and a deep familiarity with its fascinating history, with a special appreciation for the cars that launched both the historic musclecar era and the factory racers whose exploits spawned that period’s dragstrip and NASCAR horsepower wars. It is no surprise then to learn that Mecum has assembled one of the finest collections of rare and historically significant Pontiacs in the world, including the famous GeeTO Tiger contest car, a 1963 Catalina “Swiss Cheese” factory drag racer (one of just 14 built), twin examples of the world-beating 421 Super Duty Tempest and the 1965 Riverside Raceway GTO convertible Pace Car.

Mecum Auction is pleased to offer these historic Pontiac treasures at Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction - 23rd Year at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds May 19-23, 2010.

As the 1962 drag season was coming to a close, it was obvious that Pontiac’s position at the top of the Super Stock hierarchy was weakening. Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet were gaining on the Chiefs with bigger engines and an ever-increasing supply of special parts, including weight-saving aluminum components and body panels. Pontiac engineers realized they had to have a lighter, more powerful car for 1963, and it came in the form of a special Catalina bearing some serious

modifications. First the chassis was altered by cutting the top section away from the boxed rails, leaving a U-shaped section. Then approximately 120 holes were drilled in the sides of the frame rails, removing as much material as possible while maintaining a semblance of structural integrity, resulting in the “Swiss Cheese” moniker that remains today. Further mods involved deleting the front sway bar and substituting an aluminum bellhousing and third member for the original pieces.

It did not stop there: insulation and sound deadener was dropped, aluminum body panels were used wherever possible, including the hood, inner and outer front fenders, splash pan, radiator bulkhead, bumpers and brackets. Plexiglas windows were also available to further reduce the car’s 3,308lb shipping weight. Even the cast iron exhaust manifolds were replaced with special high-flow aluminum units with integral cutouts. These proved suitable only for short periods of use given their tendency to melt under prolonged operation.

The 421 engine used in the Swiss Cheese Catalina was treated to 13.0:1 Mickey Thompson pistons, a #10 McKellar camshaft, lightweight valves in reworked heads, heavy duty rotating assembly and a lightweight flywheel. Carburetion was by twin Carter AFBs atop a special aluminum manifold. Rated at 410 horsepower, the engine brought the car’s total weight to 3,308 pounds and propelled it to 12-second times at 120mph. The cars were originally equipped with the Borg Warner 3-Speeds with aluminum tail sections and aluminum-case 4.30:1 Positraction differentials; most were converted to close ratio BW 4-Speeds and either 4.56 or 4.88 rear gears.

The 1963 “Swiss Cheese” Catalina offered here is perhaps the most famous of the 14 built before GM’s racing ban. Sponsored by Packer Pontiac of Detroit, it was driven in 1963 by Packer employee Howard Maselles, who set the NHRA C/Stock class record with a 12.27 ET at 114.64 MPH, a record that stood for several years. The car was discovered in the late 70s by famed Pontiac collector and historian Randy Williams, and was the first of several famous Super Duty Pontiacs that formed his famous collection. After years of collecting a vast treasure trove of Pontiac NOS parts and pieces, Williams and his good friend Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialties in Portland, MI, began restoring the car, which project was completed by Tiemann and Williams in 2000.

Today the Packer Pontiac “Swiss Cheese” Catalina is regarded as the reference point for this rare group of Pontiac lightweight factory racers, a monument to Randy Williams’ dedication to preserving Pontiac history and to Scott Tiemann’s world class craftsmanship and expertise. It is extensively documented by the records and photographs compiled by Howard Maselles, including the original “For Sale” flyer created by Maselles to sell the car at the end of the 1963 season.

Highlights:

Without a doubt, the most unusual and exotic factory racecars to emerge from the Motor City in the early 1960s came in plain white wrappers - the legendary Super Duty Le Mans coupes and Tempest station wagons. Pontiac’s innovative engineering had paid off with domination in the Super Stock classes, and when racers such as Mickey Thompson and Jim Wangers began stuffing the 421 Super Duty V8 into the compact Tempest platform, factory engineers ran with the concept, adding special components such as aluminum body panels, Hurst shifters and tubular headers. Based on the knowledge and experience that could only come from working closely with Pontiac’s racing customers, these were true factory-built racecars. Only six such vehicles of each bodystyle were built before the General Motors racing ban, and this is the only wagon known to exist.

Like the coupes, Tempest wagons were built not only to overcome the competition but contemporary tire technology as well. Traction was very much at a premium at the time and any advance paid big dividends at the finish line. The production 1963 Tempest boasted a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution with its rear-mounted transaxle, and Pontiac engineers set out to capitalize on that feature with a stronger gearbox. The automatic transmissions combined existing GM internal components with specially-designed castings and employed a clutch to engage first gear.

Of course, the cars also received the best and latest equipment Pontiac had at the time, including the dual four-barrel 421 Super Duty engine, a complete aluminum front end, factory-supplied headers and slicks and bucket seats.

This is the famous Union Park Wagon raced out of Maryland. It features all the correct and incredibly rare factory racing equipment, including the dual-quad 421 SD engine and Powershift transaxle. Formerly a centerpiece of the famed Randy Williams Collection, it was the subject of one of the most arduous and well-chronicled restorations in recent memory, the result of two decades of research and parts-gathering by the late Randy Williams. It has recently been a part of the Dana Mecum Pontiac Collection.

Long known as the preferred brand of the senior set, Pontiac roared out of nowhere at the turn of the Sixties to claim multiple Super Stock championships. It kept the competition back on its heels with a flurry of new over-the-counter parts before finally introducing a radical new performance package that was more than the typical recipe of cubic inches, midsize body and deleted creature comforts.

Page 15: Dana Mecum Pontiacs

Pontiac engineers had decided not only to up the horsepower ante, but to address the major problem facing their drag-racing customers: traction. The new Super Duty Tempest/Le Mans Coupes, like the SD Tempest station wagons, used a rear-mounted transaxle for better weight distribution, improving the car’s launch. Heavy-duty internals were packed into new, stronger cases, creating the unique and durable “Powershift” four-speed transaxle. A robust mechanical clutch could be used to replace the torque converter, adding to starting-line response.

The factory took further steps to improve the car’s performance, punching its 389 V-8 out to 421 cubic inches. Its twin 4-barrel carbs and free-flowing aluminum exhaust headers pushed power up to a potential 500 horses, and lightweight aluminum front sheetmetal and bumpers shaved considerable weight.

The Wynn Engineering Tempest presented here is one of the original six 421 Super Duty Coupes built by Pontiac. Four were destroyed and a fifth was recently found minus almost all the distinguishing special factory equipment, making this car the only complete example in existence. Along with the Union Park SD station wagon, it has been a central piece of Dana Mecum’s collection of rare Pontiac factory racers.

Pontiac advertising executive Jim Wangers’ specialty was creating winning combinations. When he partnered with Royal Pontiac, George Hurst and Petersen Publishing in 1965 to further boost sales of performance parts and the hot-selling GTO, the result was a nationwide contest based on a song recorded by a band called “The Tigers” on the Colpix label. And that song was… “GeeTO Tiger.”

The contest Grand Prize was a specially-prepared 1965 Pontiac GTO. Equipped with over 28 factory options plus special gold Hurst mag wheels, a special Hurst Gold paint job and a gold-plated Hurst shifter, it was the ultimate GTO and the

ultimate promotional vehicle. Jim Wangers described it as “a total street machine, the nicest GTO you could put your hands on.”

Both Hurst and Pontiac advertised and promoted the car in automotive magazines for months in 1965 with full-page ads and wide editorial coverage. Pontiac offered the record in many of their ads, and in total, over 450,000 “GeeTO Tiger” albums were distributed. The winner was a last minute entrant, 19-year old Alex Lampone of West Allis, Wisconsin, who received the keys from George Hurst at the 1965 NHRA Indy Nationals.

Lampone treasured the car and drove it sparingly for a few years before selling it to Pete Yeko, who won regularly with it at Great Lakes Drag-a-way in Union Grove, Wisconsin. GTO collector Jim Urban bought the car and rebuilt the engine before selling it to Jerry Trevelan of Appleton, Wisconsin in 1975. The GeeTO’s true identity was obscured until a chance encounter with Jim Wangers, who told a surprised Trevelan of its historic status. Trevelan had the car repainted in 1982; otherwise it’s completely original and has traveled just 59,000 miles.

After nearly thirty years in Jerry Treleven’s care, Jerry sold the Hurst “GeeTO Tiger” to collector Colin Comer. The “GeeTO Tiger” has since been reunited with the 1965 Hurst/Motor Trend Magazine Riverside 500 GTO Pace Car in Dana Mecum’s magnificent collection of rare and historical Pontiacs.

The subject of a hit record and a wildly successful nationwide marketing campaign, the “GeeTO Tiger” is perhaps the most significant GTO of all time. Certainly no other car is so closely tied to the model’s history: It’s an original Royal Bobcat car, hand assembled by Pontiac Engineering and Hurst Performance Products, and with its young new owner was a hit at the 1965 NHRA Indy Nationals.

The car is discussed in Jim Wanger’s popular book Glory Days, The Big Little GTO Book, Classic Sixties, Musclecar Enthusiast and Car Collector magazines and Dennis Kirban’s Hurst Wheel and Memorabilia book. More recently it was the official 40th Anniversary GTO Nationals car and was reproduced in a limited edition model by Performance Years Enterprises. The car was the subject of a feature road test episode on Spike TV’s “Musclecar” show, and part of an exclusive interview with the “Godfather of the GTO” Jim Wangers, and noted GTO historian/author Paul Zazarine on “V-8 TV” in 2007.

Now forty-two years after exploding onto the blossoming American musclecar scene, the GeeTO Tiger is ready to fulfill another lucky owner’s dreams.

This famous GTO was purchased new by Motor Trend Magazine and George Hurst of Hurst Performance Products. The original “Protect-O-Plate” is made out to “MOTOR TREND”, and the 1964 California title application is for “Mr. George Hurst, Hurst & Campbell Company.”

The very first car to sport the now legendary Hurst Wheels, it was used to introduce that same product at the Ambassador Hotel Hurst Press Party on January 5th, 1965. Serial numbers stamped into the wheels prove that it still wears the original set installed in December of 1964.

George Hurst and Motor Trend similarly prepared another GTO, and the two were named official pace cars for the 1965 Motor Trend Riverside “500” race. The plan was to award one to the race winner, in this case none other than Dan Gurney, and the other to a ticket holder at the race. Dan’s car is thought to have been crushed many years ago, but this one went to a lucky winner who sold it to a collector three years later. Carefully stored until 1996, it has been a feature member of the Mecum Collection.

“Sister Car” to the 1965 Hurst “Gee-TO Tiger, this car is original and unrestored, with just 20,000 original miles. The car’s original lettering has been exactly replicated using period photographs. In addition to the Hurst provenance, it is also a documented factory Tri-Power 4-Speed car, loaded with options as George Hurst always ordered his cars. As significant as GTOs have become in their own right, this car has to be considered a priceless piece of Pontiac history.

The Hurst/Motor Trend Riverside 500 Pace Car was the cover car for the March 2006 Car Collector Magazine, with a full article by Paul Zazarine. It was also featured on “V-8 TV” in 2007 with Jim Wangers and Pontiac writer/historian Paul Zazarine.
